It is happening with frightening regularity: The bashing of Christians, primarily in States run by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Ameticulousandwell-orchestrated campaign to denigrate and demonise the Christians. Their designisdevious:aclearmethodin their ‘madness’! The divisive agenda is to polarise sections of
themajoritycommunityagainstthe Christians. The bogey of so-called ‘conversions’ is always raised creating unfounded ‘fears’ that the population of Christians is increasing in the country, whereas the official Government statistics unequivocally prove that over the years, there is a decline in the Christian population of India! Christians are consistently targeted: intimated and harassed; they are arrested on false and fabricated charges; their institutions are attacked. Christian literature is burnt, undemocratic demands are made on the Christians,anti-Conversionlawsare weaponised, dead Christians, in some places, are denied even the
right to a decent burial. Reports of these attacks (all unjustified), come in daily: and they don’t seem to stop! Above all, those who are responsible for these heinous crimesdoso withimpunityandare apparentlyguaranteedimpunityby the bosses and their ilk!
The long-term strategy of the ‘hindutva-vadis’is clear: they bash up Christians (as they have done with the Muslims) and, in several cases, notch up electoral gains! Hate speech against the Christians and other minorities have now become the rule rather than a rarity! On 17 June, BJP legislator Gopichand Padalkar in Kupwad, Sangli, Maharashtra, allegedly said, “whoeverbeatsthefirstpriestwill getfivelakhs, thesecondfourlakhs, andthethirdthreelakhs.”There is plenty of well-documented evidence to prove all this. Besides with all these bogeys and myths –the way is gradually being paved for a national anti-Conversion law! Ultimately (Godforbiditwillever happen!), they would like to usher in a nation-state based on the ‘hindutva’ideology!
The latest, is the arrest of the two Religious Sisters in Durg,
Chhattisgarh.Sr.PreetiMaryandSr. Vandana Francis belonging to the CongregationoftheAssisiSistersof Mary Immaculate (ASMI) (also known as the ‘Green Gardens Sisters’) \were arrested along with another young man (Sukhman Mandavi, aresidentofNarayanpur), at Durg Railway Station, on 26 July. They were accompanying three young women (around 18 to 19 years old) to work in a hospital attached to an Agra convent. The three were charged for offences under Section 143(human trafficking) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)2023 and under Section 4 (unlawful religious conversion) under the Chhattisgarh Religious Freedom Act, 1968. They are currently in judicial custody; their bail application was rejected by a lower court on 29 July. Significantly, in an earlier order, the Chhattisgarh High Court has taken cognisance of previous cases where Bajrang Dal activists were accused of misusing anti-conversion laws, raising further questions about the legalbasisofsucharrests.
The unfortunate incident began after a railway ticket examiner questioned the girls and the man
accompanying them from their village, regarding their tickets. The group said that the nuns who were already on the platform had the tickets with them. In a matter of minutes, thelocalBajrangDaloutfit was informed, and they arrived in large numbers. The Railway police then detained the nuns, the man, and the three women. Bajrang Dal members protested at the police station, pressing officers to register a First InformationReport (FIR). The three girls were later moved to a governmentrunshelterhome, while the nuns and the man were remandedtojudicialcustody. A long video has since been going viral on social media. In it, one sees JyothiSharma,aBajrangDalactivist, threatening, abusing and even assaulting the detained group inside a police station and in full view of the policemen. Sharma is heard yelling at the man, “Doyou understand? Will you speak? Or shouldIhityou?”She then turns to thenunsandthreatens,“Ifyoudon't wanttospeak,Iwillsmashyour face,I’mwarningyou.”She accuses the nuns of being part of a human trafficking and religious conversion racket, claiming that their bag
contained “a Bible, a photo, a passbook,anATMcard,andadiary withpastors’numbers.”Shetellsthe crowdwhohadgatheredinsupport of the nuns, “Thesenumbersprove thisisaracket.Iftheydon’thavea racket,whywouldsomanypeople gatherfortwonunswhoarenot from here? I am from a Hindu organisation.Ihavecometosave mydaughter.Whohavetheycome tosave?”
She questions those detained in a harshand intimidatingmanner. She pulls their bags from their hands andbeginstoinspecttheircontents and documents in them as though she was above law and order. Referring to the documents in their possession, Sharma questions them insuchahorribleway–whichwould put even a hard- core Nazi to shame! Interestingly, she does all this in front of the police and the police sit in silence completely acquiescing to her blatant crimes. The video which shows Sharma in pathetic light, has drawn widespread condemnation from every section of society. Not perhaps with her political bosses who might soon felicitate her and even give her a seat in Parliament!
Speaking later to a news outlet she says, “Idon’thiteveryone.Ijusthit peoplewhoconvertHindugirlsto Christianity.Iamsurethatthose womenareHindu, theyhaveHindu names. It’s the duty of Hindu organisationsaswellasthepolice toprotectthem”. Why is she not booked?
Adding fuel to the fire, the Chief MinisterofChhattisgarhVishnuDeo Sai, wrote, on his handle X “Three daughters from Narayanpur were promisednursingtrainingandjob placements.Theywerehandedover totwonunsatDurgstation, who weretakingthemtoAgra.Through inducement, anattemptwasbeing made at human trafficking and conversion.Thisisaseriousmatter related to women’s safety. The investigationisongoing, andthe matterisunderjudicialreview. The lawwilltakeitscourse.Chhattisgarh isapeacefulstatewherepeopleof allcommunitiesliveinharmony. It’s unfortunatetopoliticisethisissue.”
The arrest of the nuns has naturally sparked national outrage. The Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI), which has normally
been very reticent, cautious and even afraid of taking on the Modi regime, finally held a Press ConferenceinNewDelhion28July. The Press Release issued by the CBCI highlights some facts but is rather mild in tone. The Church in Kerala which has been toeing the BJP line so far, has through its official mouthpiece ‘Deepika’ , denounced the arrests in unequivocaltermswhiletheCSIand Orthodox Churches have also registered their protest. Archbishop Andrews Thazhath, the MetropolitanArchbishopofThrissur who is also the President of the CBCI, criticised the arrests and condemned the actions of Bajrang Dal members. He said, “This has happened in a country where freedomofreligionisallowed. The nunswereattackedbytheBajrang Dalactivists, andnoneshouldforget thatnunsalwaysstandandworkfor theupliftofthedowntrodden,”He also thanked Members of Parliament (MPs) from Kerala for raising the matter in Parliament, though a motion to debate it was disallowed. Meanwhile, Opposition
Parliamentarians, from all parties have strongly condemned these arrests and some Parliamentarians have also visited the three who are incarcerated in Durg. Members of civil society, including academics, intellectuals and human rights defenders have strongly condemned these attacks on Christians and of course, on other minorities of the country. Meanwhile, in a powerful indication of the rabid state of the BJP, their Union Minister of State forMinority Affairs, George Kurian asserted that thearrestoftwonunsfromKeralain Chhattisgarh is part of a conspiracy to create divisions between ChristianandHinducommunitiesin Kerala. He also suggested that the media should direct their inquiries to Jesus. The sanity of the Union Ministerisnowbeingquestionedby all.
The BJP is systematically destroying the country; they have eroded the secular fabric of the Constitution and the democratic ethos of the country. They have polarised the country into majority versus
minority- through false, fabricated, divisive propaganda and hate speeches. India today is a laughingstock on the world stage. ThePrimeMinisterroamstheworld, at the tax-payers expense, for his self- glorification. The country on everyglobalindex/indicatorisinthe doldrums. Whilst the crony capitalist friends of the ruling regimehaveaball, itisthepoorand themarginalisedofthecountrythat must bear the brunt. They have sabotagedtheelectoralprocessand used Constitutional bodies according to their whims and fancies. They have curtailed Freedom of Religion and Freedom of Speech and Expression and Dissent.Theyhavetriedtoinstilfear intoeverysectionofsociety.
What the nation needs at this moment is that people must be awake to the realities around, be aware of the manipulations of the ruling regime, and arise as one nation to act now. Rabindranath Tagore puts the reality of today stronglywhenhewrites,

Elder's Crisis & A Demographic Iceberg
Compiled:Ivan Saldanha-Shet.
One can note that many of our elders whom we have looked up to anddependeduponarefastgetting to be 70, 75, 80 years and more......take a look of the situation that prevails and consider the future. The current sad plight of Elders in India is indeed a rapidly
growing crisis, seen now as just the tip of the iceberg, and the demographic 'Titanic' is bound to crash on this iceberg sooner than later. The Growth at an unprecedented rate, now more than 10% of the total population. Thisisseentodoubleto nearly20% or35crore people by 2050. This surgeisseenagainstthe grave backdrop of economic insecurity, eroding family support systems, and glaring healthcare gaps. These findings come from a report jointly prepared by UNFPA India and the International Institute for Population Sciences, along with research from NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. Two vitaldisciplinescoveringthisareaof regulation are "Gerontology" and
"Geriatrics" are both practically ignored so far in India. Further, State Govts have placed the "Welfare Affairs of the Aged" as a sub-head of vague departments who don't allocate proper full-time officials for this aim which defeats all needed actions. All state Govts must have in place a proper fullfledged department or ministry for the "Welfare of aged/senior citizens" there should be no compromise on this. A proper working regulatory body in every districtisessentialduetotheselfish andnarrowdoingsthatareactivein mostplacesandbadadministration
in institutions. In prisons better systems to recognise and set right faults is viable and law comes to rescue. Most important responsibility of an administration inoldageHomesistobeconstantly aware and formulate routine day to day problems of inmates and set right matters earliest. Their role primarily is not decorating, celebrating and showcasing supeficials at the cost of the inmates, ignoringhumanwelfare.
Eventhemostfortunateoftheaged are justified to feelnegative in different ways and degrees. The cause is well known to those who experience ageor encounter it closely, practicallyfolksabove 70 yearsarejustified. Thereareinfinite reasons and complaints and causes to feel bad and getnegative - most are true to reality, as the body ages and gives way to weakness, illness, inexplicable handicaps and challenges that can be experienced only at 'thatage' and not before. Untiland unless apersonreaches the 60s, 70s, 80s orrare90sitisimpossibleforthose yet to catch up to simulate or imagine the vagaries of ageand
illness. Under no circumstances, even well-educated and motivated, younger people can grasp the full extent of suffering. The financial aspects of the problems are not taken up here but need careful and fullattentionbytheauthorities. For example, the fixed deposits in institutions after the demise of the individual are very difficult to legallyretrieve which in due turn causes lethargy in the case of survivingfolks.Only 29% of elderly people receive pensions, the vast majority is financially at sea. Family carestructures, particularlyinurban settings, are weak, leaving ageing
adults to fend for themselves with limited income and inconsistent access to healthcare. The organised aged care institutions, particularly religious kind, ignore those with poor incomes as is true across the board. Gerontology systems seem unqualified and untrained and dedicated.
The healthcare system is being updated to meet the needs of our rapidly ageing population. Nearly half of India’s elderly suffer from hypertension, 43% from diabetes, and over one-third from arthritis. Despite the chronic conditions, India has only 270 trained geriatricians to serve over 14 crore older adults. Palliative care remains either unavailable or prohibitively expensive, public insurance schemes reach just few wellequippedelders.
Resolving the ignominy of ageand illness - best is to make a firm resolve and effort in advance to accept and adjust like a superhuman, yet impossible it seems.Old age is a blind walk where nothing is defined, clear, expected or predicted. Alternating between positive and negative
outlook/mindset wide fluctuations are certain. Presently the agedare being rapidly transportedfrom wellness to illnessas it provides all aroundprofitcommercially.
Assuming the roles of caregivers and supervisors are only by accident, unqualifiedand untrained and unmotivated, the monetary potential for those who can expect to earn a pittance is the only bait. This bait is laid by agencies and
institutions which make a fast buck and if looked closely is just a big scam which is not regulated by any authorityandallauthoritiesinIndia, especially the larger cities, just turn ablindeye.
Women, who are generally longer lasting, face compounded problems, but are better looked upon as most workers in these homesarewomen, andtheplightof men is pathetic. At least 71% of elder abuse victims reported it. Social isolation is another concern, aged in India are unwanted by one and all and looked upon as trash. Digitalexclusionis59%,asaccessto digital devices and very small numbersare digitally literate, limiting their access to information. Infrastructureforelder care remains minimal, and that too is very defective and overlooked. India has just 1,000 old-age homes mainlyinurbanareas, with many offerings substandard care and high costs. Private sectorluxury retirement homes and high-end assistive institutions serve the wealthiest 1%. Institutions and operatives for the aged are often known to actively cause aged sick people to lose the will to live. Many
instances of unnatural deaths coveredupasnatural.
The negative aspect is dull life allotted to elders after they have slogged and contributed a lot to their families and the nation, isa matter of regret. Religious books lay bare thisagescenario in a multitude of passages and examples. One I recall from the bible, " Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, youwillstretchoutyourhands, and anotherwilldressyouandcarryyou where you do not want to go." .... John 21:18. In the Indian Constitution certain fundamental rights are guaranteed to citizens, but de factoif you are off your feet or sick and helpless no one cares if you get your fundamental rights or not. Justice is a word only in
dictionaries, and they who have no basic sense of justice demand it whentheyfeelthepinch.
A few Realities: Sustaining the wellbeing, independence and capabilities ofolderpeople as they advance inage and become solely dependent. The surrounding environmentsinwhichtheyliveplay a vital role in maintaining their activenessand independence. The top question to ask those involved and responsiblefor the welfare ofolderpeopleis "Are you willing toensurethehumanrightsandcivil liberties of theolderpeople?" In critical stages the choice of treatment and allchoices are taken away from theagedpersonand all decisions are made by kith and kin orothers.
The life of the agedis lived in a series of ’prisons’, like destitute homes, orphanages, halfway home, addiction centers, hospitals, Homes
foraged, rehabilitation centers and many such care institutions and homes which are unnecessarily sad places. Loneliness is an epidemic disease faced by many and rapidly increasing and a chain reaction.Regardingoldageandold agehomes, much is seen but not absorbed. Society is obsessedwiththe 'throw away culture' andagedsickpeopleare the first casualty. There are manyold-agehomes of different typesandtypesbeingopenedthese days, indicating the big profits and returnsfortheownerswhomaintain a tight grip with the neglected residents. Homes claiming to take care of theaged seem to take care of very sick cases that should be in hospitals, and those wells are only pushedtobecomesick, andthewell placesaresoonill.Itisacceptedthat theirownfamily/folkwanttheseout of the way and put away in homes where no care or concern is there.
Folkspay for their upkeep and call them sometimes and ever ready to supply gifts and baksheesh to the caregivers and managements of such homesbut never want to ask relevant questions. There is little or no interest in theagedandoldand the little visible is just shame and surface drama. There are no assessmentsof the treatment or feedback and regulating mechanisms are completelyabsent.
.
Thereisunlimitedhollowdecorative hype about theagedand sick, thosewithgeneralage-related handicapsandconditions, dementia andthemedicalaspectsofgeriatrics treatment and gerontology schemes and so on and on. Now, the science of Gerontology and research coupledwithapplied management subjects to care for and support theagedis cropping up, plenty of modern terminologyand rhetoric is displayed, but what is needed is a
serious practical delivery protocol, regulated, streamlinedfunction and basic benefits to all concerned without discrimination and/or harassment. There is every reason and cause for the Central and State Govt.tohavededicatedfull-fledged departments for "Affairs of theAged" or better a 'Ministry' as the potentialto regulate and develop can only then be better met.
ThemanyCommunity/Government organisations and departments, elders’ helplines, geriatric medical facilities, trusts and so on and so forth must be motivated to work closelywithvery high motivation and regulation. Modern Mobile phones in unrestricted use in hospitals and such care institutions (especiallyold ageinstitutions)
need competent regulation to accordpropercareandattentionto sick andagedas often rampant use seriously interferes withcare and concern. Do & not do guides, Proper time allocation, Suitable regular interaction/feedback system, Balanced Food quality and variety (suited toagedfolks) and monitoring, medical attention arrangements, Care and attention assurance, Adequatecommunication and information, needed equipment for comfort,Physicalactivity,Safetyand security,Infrastructure, Mental & SpiritualSupportareessentialswith openness.
The dietary requirements of senior citizens are different from others. Hence, a diet plan that alignswiththeir health needs must be in place. Here, they must note that body and metabolism slow
downwithadvancingage, bringing changes in the digestive system, food preferences, dental position and appetite. The main critical needs of theagedand sick are mainly health, food, clothing, housing, and mobility. oral / mouth care. To make thepersoncomfortable Nutrition. ...Hygiene. ...Pain relief. ...Bowel and bladder care, ...Positioning for comfort and to allow the personto be active. Basically, “breathe normally”, “eat and drink”, “eliminate body wastes” “movement”, “sleep and rest”, “dress and undress”, “temperature”, "hygiene/skin”, “safety” “transparency” must be available to the inmates accordingto what they pay, and they should not be deprived.
Younger people see older people through the years, and they think that those older people are years away and that they have a lot of time ahead, then it hits like lightning!! Friends retire and get grey, they move slower. Some are in better and worse shape, surely greatchangeisvisible.Theyarenot liketheonesthatwerememberwho wereyoungandvibrant.Theirageis beginningto show, andweare now those older folks that we used to haveseenafewyearsagoandnever thoughtwe'dbesosoon. Everyone needsbetterawareness, acceptance plans and outcomes with all uncertainties, only adjustments, hope, faith and positivity will bring theBestthatGODcanprovide.
