Be a Peacebuilder and Make the World a Better Place

Pope Leo XIV as he appeared first time as new Pope on 8th May 2025 from the Balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican, he greeted thecrowdsinSt.Peter’sSquareand allovertheworldwithwords“Peace betoallofyou”. That’showusually a Bishop greets the faithful at the beginning of Mass. That’s how the Risen Lord greeted the disciples every time he appeared to them: “Peacebewithyou”. Peace is such a wonderful gift that allofusdesireandneed.Jesussaid, “My peace I give to you, not as the world gives to you”. The peace which Christ gives us is a gift that onlypeopleofgoodwillcanreceive.

WhenJesusthePrinceofPeacewas born, his birth was announced to shepherds by the angel and a host ofangelssangatthattime:“Gloryto God in the highest heaven and peaceonearthtopeopleofgood will.” It is only people of good will; goodandproperdispositionreceive divinepeace.Othersnotonlydonot receive this peace but also try to destroy peace for others in the society, all because of their vested interestsandselfishgains.

That’s why there are conflicts, quarrels, terrorist activities, even wars in the world. People fight with theirownfamily members.Wehear from time to time a brother killing his own brother or sister. Not so seldom children kill their parents. Neighbours fighting with one another is quite common.

Sometime extremists or fundamentalists unleash violent

attacks on innocent people or on whom they consider as their enemies. There are also religious persecutions. We hear of riots and communal violence every now and then.Manycountrieshavecivilwars goingoninthem, whilesomeothers are engaged in prolonged war against their neighbouring countries (e.g. Russia – Ukraine, Israel-Palestine).IndiaandPakistan live in constant tension at the borders often engaging in cross borderfiringsorterroristattacks. Inotherwords, inanenvironmentof constant tension, unrest, quarrels, terroristactivitiesandwars, peaceis the need of the hour. There is no progresswithoutpeace. Andpeace is not possible without justice and goodwill.

War is no solution to any problem. Violence begets violence and hates begets hate. What is required is forgiveness, dialogue and negotiationtosettleanydisputesor problems.TheLordJesusChristhas taught us the path of non-violence and forgiveness. He has

commanded us to love our neighbour as we love ourselves. To love one another as he loves us. Mahatma Gandhi the Father of our Nation has also taught us the path ofnon-violence.

Let us live in peace and let others live in peace. We must be channels ofpeacewherethereisconflictand unrest. We must be bridge-builders and break walls of hatred and prejudices.Letusbuildacivilization ofloveandputanendtocultureof death. Jesus calls the peacemakers blessedfortheyshallbecalledsons ofGod.(cf.Mt.5:9)

Pope Francis of happy memory was atruechannelofpeace.Hetriedhis best to work for world peace. Apart from continuing to send annual messages for World Day of Peace (1st January), he took every opportunity to appeal for peace whenever there was any conflict anywhere in the world. He tried his best to stop wars between Russia and Ukraine, Israel and Palestine andmanyothercountriestornapart by civil wars. He even sent his

envoys to broker peace in different countries.Oneofthemosttouching scenes was when he knelt and kissed the feet of two South Sudan leaders to bring peace and reconciliation in that country some yearsago.

Recently, that is, on 9th May 2025 the Commission for Inter-Religious Dialogue of the Catholic Diocese of Lucknow and Dr. Ammar Rizvi, the President of the Organization for Nuclear Disarmament, World Peace & Environment (ONDWPE) jointly organized an Inter-religious Prayer

Meeting in the Cathedral Hall in Lucknow to pray for World Peace and Brotherhood. It was well attended by people of all Faiths. All Religious Leaders spoke on the need of peace in the world and in our own country and prayed for peace. Such meetings and gatherings will surely help to create good will among people of different faiths. We need to work together to build peace in the society and reduce communal disharmony, hatred and violence. We need to build peace and brotherhood and make the worldabetterplacetolive.

May Jesus the Prince of Peace inspire us and fill us with his peace.

May Mary the Queen of Peace pray forus.Maypeaceprevailsonearth.

CRIES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

It is ‘World Environment Day’ once again! Everywhere one witnesses a flurry of ‘activities.’ There is the usual jostle to plant saplings(trees), the plethora of long, boring speeches on the importance of the environment ‘ad nauseam’ and plenty of photo-ops with faces turned towards the cameras. The newspapers are full of advertisements about the environment;severalofthemareby Government agencies – the very ones who destroy the environment andourfragilebiodiversity!

Plenty of ‘tokenism’ and ‘cosmetic’ action – most of which, will be forgotten tomorrow. Trees are necessarybutistheresomeonewho willnurturethesaplingsandensure their growth? Public awareness on the importance of the environment is a prerequisite – but then words ringhollowwhentheoneswhowax eloquent are the very ones who are in nexus with the land mafia who

cover our waterbodies for their high-rise building and who cohort with the mining mafia to plunder ourpreciousnaturalresources.

Interestingly, the theme for World Environment Day 2025 is ‘Ending Global Plastic Pollution’. It focuses onthewidespreadimpactofplastic pollution, from visible waste to microplasticsinvariousecosystems, and calls for action to reduce and eliminateit.Butwhocares?Someof the big manufacturers will continue rolling out their reams of plastic withoutanyqualmsofconscience –after all, they will always have the protectionofthepowerful.Ourseas and rivers are polluted with plastic waste. There are practically no checks and balances, toensure that plastics below 120 microns are not used as carry-bags or for that matter there is strict segregation of garbage disposal, and nothing is dumped into our seas, rivers and otherwaterbodies,

On the 2024 Environmental

Performance Index (EPI), India is rankedatapatheticallylowposition of176outof180countries.Thelow ranking is due to poor air quality, high projected emissions and low biodiversity scores. The EPI uses 58 indicators to assess a country's environmental performance. Indicators, include biodiversity, air pollution, air and water quality, waste management, emission growth rates, projected emissions, etc., under the three main heads of ecosystem vitality, environmental health and climate change. To assess how well countries are safeguardingtheirnaturaltreasures, the EPI added a new category this year: biodiversity and habitat. This category revealed a worrying trend – many protected areas worldwide are being overtaken by buildings and agriculture. India's heavy reliance on coal is a key factor hindering its environmental performance across multiple indicators. Coal use not only fuels high greenhouse gas emissions but also contributes significantly to India'ssevereairpollutionproblem. This is reflected in India's rankings: 177 for air quality (above only Pakistan,Bangladesh, andNepal).

This grim reality, cries for EnvironmentalJustice!Itisthecryof the poor! The cry of the earth! ‘Environmental justice’ is today a global social movement that addresses injustice that occurs when poor or marginalized communities are harmed by hazardous waste, resource extraction, andotherlandusesfrom which they do not benefit. The movementhasgeneratedhundreds ofstudiesshowingthatexposureto environmental harm is inequitably distributed. Additionally, many marginalized communities, including the LGBTQIA+ community, are disproportionately impactedbynaturaldisasters.

The primary goal of the environmental justice movement is to achieve agency for poor and marginalized communities (particularly the excluded and exploited) in making environmental decisions that affect their lives. The global environmental justice movement arises from local environmental conflicts in which environmentaldefendersfrequently confront multi-national

corporations in resource extraction or other industries. Local outcomes of these conflicts are increasingly influenced by trans-national environmental justice networks. In India we experience today how mega-corporations, and the mining mafia are literally ruling the roost. What is happening in the tribal areas of Manipur and the Adivasi areas of Bastar, Chhattisgarh today are clear examples of how environmental justice is denied to thesesectionsofpeople!

In a few days from now, the 62nd sessions of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies (SB 62) will convene from June 16 to 26, at the World Conference Centre Bonn in Germany. The outcomes of SB 62 are expected to shape the agenda andinformdecisionsatCOP30later in the year. The 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC)thatisCOP30will takeplacefrom 10to21November inBelém,Brazil. Duringthisclimate summit, governments must take new steps to limit the climate crisis and achieve the target of a

maximum of 1.5 degrees of global warming.

In the context of the above two meetings, the Society of Jesus have launched globally ‘Jesuits for Climate Justice SB62 and COP30 campaign’ stating that, “theclimate crisiscannolongerbedenied. Its most severe effects are felt in countries where extreme weather devastatescommunities, risingsea levelsthreatencoastalregions, and ecosystem collapse jeopardizes livelihoods.TheIntergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reportwarnsof“arapidlyclosing windowofopportunitytosecurea liveableandsustainablefuturefor all.”Thiscrisisdemandsimmediate anddecisiveactions,andCOP30isa critical event for the global community in addressing the climateemergency.Inthespiritof theJubileeofHope, wecalluponall peopleofgoodwilltoadvocatefor ajustandsustainablefuture, urging delegates to COP30 and governmentsto: 1.Cancel the debt of underdeveloped countries and strengthentheLossandDamage Fund.Unjustandunpayabledebts

TheCOPprocessisimperativefor making international progress on the climate crisis. Pope Francis stated,“Itisamatterofestablishing globalandeffectiverulesthatcan permit ‘providing for’ this global safeguarding” (LD, 43). All are

invited to join in this important campaign.

Long years ago, Mahatma Gandhi reminded us that, “the world has enoughforeveryone'sneeds, but noteveryone'sgreed.”In his pathbreaking Encyclical ‘Laudato Si’, our beloved late Pope Francis echoes a similarsentiment“wehavetorealize that a true ecological approach alwaysbecomesasocialapproach; itmustintegratequestionsofjustice indebatesontheenvironment,so astohearboththecryoftheearth andthecryofthepoor.” These are genuine cries for environmental justice! But is the world listening? Are we listening? If so, radical and prompt action is demanded immediately – NOW!

Unforgettable Courageous Crusader.

The premier personality of Konkani Mangalore who is unforgettable, consistently remembered with or without an occasion or reason is "Eric Ozario". And for me, ever since he visited me years ago and presented me with his Biography 'The Indefatigable Crusader’ I find cause and reason to keep my admirationrenewedandmagnified. Time and again someone or the other recalls my review of this grand Biography and the sentiments and admiration are renewed. On this occasion I would like to point out to the esteemed VEEZ Weekly readers, courtesy Editor Dr. Austin Prabhu of Chicago USA, that ERIC Baab's Biography is worth reading and reflecting every bit - if you have not read it (In KonkaniorEnglish)donotwaitand do it as soon as you can for every

purpose and reason. Allow me to reflect superficially on the life and aims of ERIC OZARIO of Mangalore to give you all a glance into this great life and faith that to date continues to thrill and inspire each andeveryonewhohearsofhimand his Biography / Story

Eric Alexander Ozario has always been seen as 'crusader' in multicontexts and has created a positive revolution in various spheres; his tireless efforts are constant and consistent, for the promotion, preservation and development of the Konkani language and Konkani cultureandethosglobally, aswellas justice and truth for his brethren. Never compromising on his beliefs and giving human rights a place next to God. And all people of good will who have seen his

integrity at close quarters know his real worth and that the rough iron seenoutsidecoversplatinum

within, an uncut diamond; he holds his God above all else, the first among firsts.

Eric Ozario, Co- Founder of Mandd Sobhann and Kalaangann and a bornmusicianandsinger,self-made intellectual, has made his dreams come true through his hard work, devotion even in difficulties and above all self-confidence and love forKonkaniculture. .“Wherethereis a will there's a way” - Dreams Can become reality. However, it needs hard work, determination, selfconfidence and risk taking.

TheEnglishversionofGurkarEric's

Biography "The Indefatigable Crusader" takes the reader through inspiring historic paths/ journeys of struggles and battles that this genuine crusader fought under the very cross; Some holier than thou elementsmadeeveryefforttodeny him and isolate him. His fierce battle for justice, for the lesser privileged and the downtrodden touches the very core of human emotions and values. The biography, authored by Royston Fernandes, was released by former

president of Mangalore University chair for Christianity Rev John Fernandes a learned priest of Mangalore diocese who has won accolades for his services in Germany, and his autobiography 'Unbeaten Paths'. Like the Biblical passage says "A prophet is not recognized in his own home," that applies to both these great crusaders-hopetodoanexposeon Rev. John Fernandes soon.

Gurkar Eric's life, starting with the arrival of European Missionaries in

Mangalore, and the socio-cultural and economic impact of their religious conversion of a section of the aboriginal people of Mangalore. Eric’s life is an interesting mix of the social isolation that he has seen in his childhood, and the colourful larger thanlifepersonathathedaredtobe asheadvancedinyearsandevolved into a giant. His bitter experiences helpedhimanalysethetruecolours ofthissocietyanditsunjustmodels; his choice has uniformly been, alwayslookahead.Eric’scrusadesas a young man campaigning for the people of his ghetto - Jeppu, in South Central part Mangaluru, is electrifying,hair-raising,stimulating andwillthrill.Eventodaythisareais a cauldron on the boil, an eye sore too and still very motivating for justice. His conscientiousandmoral

battles, leading the Christian workers against their employers –the church; is inspiring to most and may even be scandalous to a good many who have blinkers. All his struggles particularly in Christian establishmentsblatantlyexposethe duplicity of an organised religion and the all-pervasive hypocrisy. But what may surprise many readers is thefactthatEric, despiteleadingthe agitations, is also a celebrated personality, composer and singer parexcellence, soughtandadmired bytheKonkanisocietyinandoutof the church. He is not only a distinguished artiste, but also is a creative innovator, an excellent organiser, an eminent educator, an admired leader and an illustrious, untiring Konkani activist who through his organisation 'Mandd Sobhann', has rejuvenated Konkani language and culture. Ozario’s messagesays,"One’strueidentityis in his/her language and Culture. If identity is lost, everything is lost. It is time that we wake-up to the dangers of the extinction of our language and Culture.” Eric’s life is a perfect blend of the brave tiger that fought for the people and the flamboyantpeacockthatperformed

before the world – a rare combination that only the rarest celebrated and accomplished personalities in the history of this world possess. His stimulating and saluted life will, without doubt, inspire and awaken to heights the humane and revolutionary spirit.

Early in his music mission he put together a band called “Sweet Serenade” and carried it on for

nearly 20 years. He also formed a band exclusively for Konkani music called“Dabazo”.Thismusicbasically catered to the needs of the community at large for weddings andotherprogrammes.Hisflagship has been ‘Mandd Sobhann’ – it is somethingdifferentwhichworksfor the cause of Konkani culture and uses Indian instruments and ragas. ‘Baila’–Konkanidancethatwaswell known among the Konkani people waninginpopularitywasrevivedby Mandd Sobhann with first show in Mangalore in 1988 at Padua High schoolgrounds.Thiswascontinued and ‘Baila Show’ was performed in various other countries along with SriLankanparticipantswhichisnow famous internationally.

EricOzariowastheChairmanofthe Cultural Committee of the First Konkani World Convention (1995). He was a special invitee at the First

North American Konkani Convention at New Jersey, USA (August 1996). He is also the CoConvener of the World Convention of the Canara Konkani Catholics to be held in Mangalore, in December 2004(Dec.26through29).Thelistis long, reading his biography will cover the vital need to know the details and his great reach.

In and around Mangaluru in the early part of 2018, in the church circles, the backdrop has been the injusticemetouttothehumblefolk ofJeppucompounds. Thechurchis

heroic in forgiving even the most heinous sins - but will not forgive the land tenants a matter of just rupees. Theclergyspendlavishlyin crores, the wealth donated by people for huge fancy churches, projects to showcase their concern, celebrations and luxury for the clergy and religious. But their valuables movable or immovable are not for giving away to God or devil. Anyonewhohashada direct experiencewiththereligiousoutfits will know and admit they are a wall ofmisshapedstonesthatcannot be penetrated easily - conscience, justice, social rights are just words to preach for them and not practice. The church of Mangalore has more land than even the Government. Andthegovernments so far are not just enough to regulate and correct the unjust

goings on. This book on Eric Ozario's life is an eye opener and reveals a lot of the reality of unjust waysofreligion-thebottomline is what is preached is not practiced andthehypocrisyofthecommunity leaders is unbelievable.

I took up this book to glance at, because my association with Mangaluru has been recent, I lived away from it for 50 years of my life. Yet,Ifeelapartandparcelofit all, as readers of my articles will know - this lovely book will inspire and give wings to the change 'all men of Good will' will like to see. This book is dedicated to the people of Jeppu, ever facing colossal hurdles and still facing the stigma of 'new Christians' Eric

Ozario continues his great mission without giving way to age related illness and limitations. "Asmitay" is a Konkani film that is the dream of ERIC BAAB. It was released in 2023 and is known for showcasing Konkani culture and heritage. The film has been screened extensively, with over 400 showings across various locations, including India, the UAE, Kuwait, and other countries. The film is a blend of a love story and a portrayal of Konkani culture. It explores the identityandheritageoftheKonkani people. "Osmitay" is considered an important piece of Konkani cinema, offering a glimpse into the community's culture and traditions.

Global Reach: The film has been shown internationally, reaching a diverse audience. Reception: Viewershavepraisedthefilmforits realisticportrayalofKonkaniculture and its cinematic quality.

Osmitay movie features Ashwin D'Costa and Wencita Dias in the lead roles. The movie is directed by Vilas Ratnakar Kshatriya and produced by Louis J Pinto under Mandd Sobhann Productions banner. The story of Osmitay is penned by Eric Ozario with Joel Pereiraas the screenplay writerand co-director. The music is composed by Eric Ozario, Allwyn Fernandes, Cajetan Dias and Joel Pereira. Editing is skilfully done by Joel Pereira, while the visuals have been beautifully captured by Balraj Gowda. Osmitay showcases the visualsplendourofKonkanirichfolk heritage along with a love story. It serves as an ideal study material

about the origin and identity of Konkani folks and offers a more realistic portrayal of thecommunity and its culture. The premiere show of Osmitay was held on September 10 at Big Cinemas, which saw an

overwhelming response from the audience. I recall a memorable evening may be in 2017, when Eric Ozario was planning the movie, he asked me to take him to the spots where the 1629 Portuguese tombstone was found and the original location of the very first settlement and the Portuguese fort along the Netravati River opposite the estuary (Alluve Bagilu) inBolar, hisinterestandattentionto detail was something I will never forget. Note Eric Baab with one of the two stones at Rosario Cathedral.

Conclusions:

'The Indefatigable Crusader' published by Notionpress.com, Chennai, is a unique one on the modern Mangaluru scene,ISBN;978-93-84049-55-3, a 298page thriller practically. Ph: 08242230489/2232239. Email : <manddsobhann@yahoo.com>.... Both books should be availableas indicated at 'Mandd Sobhann'.

Author Royston Fernandes, in his foreword 'My first encounter' captures the interest of the readers

narratinghisfamiliaritywith'thelife of my mentor and guru Eric Alexander Ozario', for a start that gives the trend ahead with hope that it is set to inspire. It may be difficult to skip any of the 32 Chapters in the book. Since, the space allotted for this review has limitations, it is not practical to touch on contents of chapters as suchwhichwouldbeaverythrilling experience here.

Eric Ozario, the crusader, said his biography may be scandalous in someaspects, especiallyforstraight jacketed religious-minded persons, asitrevealshisfightwiththechurch and some priests - in particular, regarding the Jeppu land matters, workers of Fr. Muller's, Jeppu Workshops, Stitching classes, and so on. Ozario was one of the few individuals to have achieved so much in different fields and can be a role model for the youth. "The man has worked his way up from poor conditions and achieved so much. The life of Eric is so interesting it can be converted into a drama, film, etc. in the times to come. I hope his life's story is not

restrictedtoa book,"said Goa MLA Vishnu Surya Wagh. The Konkani Book titled ‘Thokanatollo Zuzari’, published by Mandd Sobhann, was released by well-known Konkani researcher and activist, Dr Pratap Naik, Goa, at Kalaangan, here on June 14., 2015. Very prominent towering local personalities have made glowing observations which are lofty and unmatched recommendations in favour of the books. Just to name a few as space does not permit too many : Louis Pinto, Ronald Colaco, Roy Castelino, Ronald Mendonca, Dr. Pratap Naik SJ, Bernard F Sirur, Dr. Edward Nazareth, Msgr. Alexander D'Souza, Olinda Pereira, Sunney Tharappan, Sylvester D'Souza, Suzy Fontes, Dr. Valerian Rodrigues, Titus Noronha, Stany Alvares, Dr. Austin D'Souza Prabhu, Walter Nandalike, Vidya Dinker.......and many more, it will be a thrill for readers to know more, only readingthe books can get you there.

SORR -

A Typical Risk at Retirement

Even during the prevailing phase of market volatility, it bears repetition to state that equities are the most rewarding asset class in the long run. In September 2024, Sensex reached an all-time high of 85978. At this level, an investor who would have invested Rs 100 in 1980 in Sensex would have achieved a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of over 16% over about 45 years. A phenomenal growth rate indeed. But since then the markets have come down by over 6000 points.

This volatility in the market returns highlights a challenge that retirees face.ItiscalledSequenceofReturns Risk (SORR). This essentially refers to the risk of market falls occurring neartheendofone’scareeror early retirement. This can deplete the retirement corpus quickly, resulting in shortage of funds that can hurt theinvestorthroughoutretirement.

Consider a retiree Ms. Pooja. Let’s assume that she starts with a retirementcorpusofRs1crore.She plans to withdraw from the corpus Rs5lacseachyeartofundherpost retirementexpenses. Now, consider thefollowingtwopossibilities.

1. On retirement, she enjoys strongreturnsinthefirstthree years of 25%, 10% and 14%, butfaceslossesof15%and9% in the 4th and 5th year respectively.

2. On retirement she suffers losses of 15% and 9% in the firstandsecondyearsandsees gains of 14%, 10% and 25% in the3yearssucceed.

It may be noted that the annual returns are the same and only the sequence of their occurrence is different. But in each of the above two situations, the retirement corpuswillbesubstantiallydifferent attheendofthe5th year.Underthe first situation the corpus at the end

of the 5th year will be Rs 98.56 lacs whileinthesecondcaseitwouldbe Rs 88.15 lacs. This demonstrates how difference in sequence of returns can significantly impact the value of the corpus in a relatively short period after retirement, even when the average returns over that periodaresimilar.

One way to tackle the SORR problem is to devise a plan to fund post-retirement expenses early on in one’s career. For instance, say at age 30, a person’s monthly expenses are Rs 50000. Assuming an average annual inflation of 6%, 30 years from now the monthly expenses required to maintain the same standard of living will be Rs. 2.87lacsor,annualoutlayofRs.34.5 lacs. At 6% rate of return (to offset inflation) the required retirement corpus will be Rs 5.75 crores. This might appear to be a daunting number at age 30. But there are many Mutual Funds which have given long term (over 10 years) returns of over 15% CAGR. So even assuming a CAGR of 12%, say in a low-risk index fund, a monthly SIP

contribution of Rs 20000 would accumulate a corpus of approximatelyRs7croresatage60.

At age 60, the retiree could set up Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) with monthly cash flows so that annual drawdown is limited to 5 to 6%.SWPat6%wouldprovideRs42 lacs a year or about Rs 3.5 lacs a month. With the expected CAGR of 12% for the corpus, the corpus would still grow at 6% net of withdrawals which should help compensate for the erosion in purchasingpowerduetoinflation.

Oneotherdefensivestrategywould be set up a risk-free safety anchor bywayofanannuity(PensionPlan).

In the above example the required corpus is Rs 5.75 crores, while the monthly SIP of Rs 20000 over 30 yearshasdeliveredacorpusofRs.7 crores. The extra Rs 1.25 crores couldbeusedbuyanannuityat7% forlife, withreturnofpurchaseprice atdeathtothenominee.Thiswould provide a life-long guaranteed income of Rs 8.75 lacs a year. The retireecanthenreduce,ifhe/sheso wishes, the SWP rate to say 4%,

since along with annuity the annual availability of funds will be over Rs 36lacs.

So, for a secure and comfortable retired life, start investing early, invest regularly and over the long term.Securingone’sfinancialfuture doesn’t call for rocket science, but possibly something rarer: homework, patienceanddiscipline.

Breaking Out

Where convention rules, there's little room for authenticity

When society dictates your choice and sentiments

Stereotyped into a perfect frame, with little or no options

She dared not to step over, than the restricted limitations

Was this the purpose, was this the plan, for the feminine

To serve and obey and stay within the stipulation

Every man, colour no bar, across the globe, far and wide

All in unison contrived to suppress, muzzle the female gender

She was their mother, sister, wife, yet his fear ran deep Given limited faculties, man did well in subjugating her

Noting at the outset, she could well wield more authority He broke her spirit from the start, leaving her beholden

Was this the purpose, was this the ploy, for the feminine

Yet the Powers on High show a different side

All that's powerful and fearful, rules in a female form

Yet here on earth, she must cower from the earthly master

Today she's breaking out, against all odds, but not without a fight

They're losing control, and it's not comfortable Both must learn to unlearn, centuries of conditioning But the wheel of change is already set in motion, and it's unstoppable

both boys and girls, enjoy the festivalwithenthusiasm.

Suddenly, the mood shifts. Vehicles move in and out of the campus. Police sirens blare, and an ambulance rushes in. The joyous atmosphere turns tense as

Aspects of Ageing and Economic Consequences

Theeconomicconsequencesofan ageing population are well determined. A significant expenditureontheeconomyofan ageing population is due to the shrinking workforce and increasing healthcare costs. This can lead to slower economic growth, reduced productivity and challenges for public finance. Changeinagestructurecanaffect labour markets, saving and consumption and social security systems. The increase in

healthcare and pension costs, coupled with the lower savings rate and reduced investment could significantly impede GDP growth.

YettodaySiliconValleybillionaires pour fortunes into cutting edge longevitytreatments.Butarecent study published in Nature Medicine which draws on the UK biomedical database, seems to suggest that the real secrets to a longerlifeareneithermysticalnor high-tech.Thestudysuggeststhat

The study could notidentify factors to explaintheremainingvariabilityin mortality. Chart1belowidentifies environmentalandlifestylefactors with the strongest influence on mortality. While expectedly, smoking increases the risk of premature death, social connections were surprisingly powerful predictor of a long life. Physicalactivityreducedtheriskof mortality by roughly 25%. But guess what; living with a partner was roughly as beneficial as exercise. Loneliness, it was found also affects mental wellbeing –anotherfactorinlongevity. So, a workforce that is healthier for longer could be part of the solution in containing the adverse effectsofageingontheeconomy. This would make other mitigating strategies such as postponing retirement age, continuing skill enhancementevenforemployees who enter their 50s and 60s,

increased adoption of technology and encouraging innovation to enhancetheproductivityofsenior workforce,etc.,moreeffectively. But as the Economist observes, large parts of Asia are getting old before they get rich and it means that even poor countries must start planning for an ageing population.

Abulgeina country’s working-age population is a blessing. Lots of workers support relatively few children and retired people. So, if the labour market can absorb a surge of jobseekers, output per head will rise. That can boost savingsandinvestment, leadingto

higher economic growth, more productivity gains and developmental lift-off. Yet for countries that fail to seize this opportunity, the results can be grim—as many developing countriesmaysoondiscover.

Consider Thailand. It is rapidly greying.In2021theshareofThais aged 65 or over hit 14%, a threshold that is oftenused to define an aged society. Soon Thailand will, like Japan, South Korea and most Western countries, see a dwindling supply of workers and, without extraordinary measures, flagging productivity and growth. Yet unlike Japan and the rest, Thailand, withaGDPperpersonof just $7,000 in 2021, is not a developed country. It has got old beforeithasgotrich.WhenJapan had a similar portion of oldies, it was roughlyfivetimes richerthan Thailandistoday.

This is a big obstacle to Thailand’s futuredevelopment.Toprotectits ageingcitizens, manyofwhomare poor, Thailand’s government will havetospendmoreonhealthcare and pensions. This will make it

harder to invest in productivityboosting skills and infrastructure. And where Thailand goes, many developingcountrieswillfollow. In Asia, where the problem is most advanced, Indonesia and the Philippines are also likely to become aged societies at lower incomelevelsthanwasthecasein the rich world. Sri Lanka, where theaverageincomeisathirdlower than Thailand’s, will become aged by2028.

The above prognosis would suggest that countries with a working-age bulge need to wring more growth out of it. India may never have a better chance than the present. Under the prevailing stable, pro-business government,

there is a consensus on the measures, including privatisation and looser foreign-investment rules, that could raise its growth rate. Such reforms would help India take advantage of Western effortstoshiftsupplychainsoutof China. If India needs a cautionary tale to justify action, it need look no further than its own rapidly ageing southern states. In Kerala 17% of the population is 60 or older.

Another conclusion is that developingcountriesneedtostart planning for old age earlier. They should reform their pension systems, including by raising retirement ages. They should nurture financial markets, providing options for long-term saving and health insurance. They should create conditions for wellregulated private social care. And they shouldtryhardertoincrease female participation in the labour force;inIndiaitisawretched24%, half the global average. Getting more women into jobs would extend the demographic dividend and help deal with the fact that women live longer than men, but

tendtohavemoremeagresavings and pensions, and so are vulnerableinoldage. Finally, developing countries shouldlearnfromtheerrorsofrich onesbytakingapragmaticviewof immigration. Hard as this can be politically, it is often the easiest way to extend the transition. Building sites in Bangkok already throng with illegal Burmese immigrants. By formalising them, Thai politicians could usher them intomoreproductiveroles. Here, India provides a happier example of this. A continent-size country, its boom is fuelled by internal migration. Its last census, in 2011, counted 450m internal migrants. Many travels from the poor north to the more prosperous south and west, to seize new opportunities and, increasingly, to take up those being vacated by the south’s ageing workers. It is an inspiring illustration of what relatively unfettered labour markets can do—and a lesson for Japan, Thailand and governments everywhere.

From Slavery to Stardom: How One

Survivor Family Is Feeding Faith and

Freedom Across Continents:

“Youmaybebroken, butyouarenot defeated. A seed grows in darkness beforeitblossomsintolight.”

Dr. Lara Wilken, Board President, Eyes Open International and a long standing friend of Harold D’Souza.

In an extraordinary journey marked bypain, perseverance, andpurpose, onesurvivorfamilyhastransformed a history of labor trafficking and debt bondage in the United States of America into a powerful global

mission of service and hope. From enduringexploitationtobuildingan international movement,Dancyand Harold D’Souza, Founders of Eyes Open International (EOI), are living testaments that life after trauma is not only possible, but it can also be transformational.

RegisteredintheUnitedStates,Eyes Open International is now active in over a dozen countries, standing as a beacon of hope for the voiceless and vulnerable. What started as a fight for survival has become a movementofrestoration.

This year, EOI launched its most heartwarming project: the “Assisi Free Bread House” in Majevu Village, Tanzania, feeding 100 of God’s children daily, free, fully funded by Eyes Open International. It is a place where the hungry are nourished, not just with bread, but withdignityandlove.

A Tributeof FaithandFriendship

Bill Wilkinson God sent Messiah visits The D’Souza Family house to donate to EOI for Tanzania Food Drive. This life-giving project is lovingly dedicated in honor of Sr. Therese Del Gino, Board Director of Eyes Open International and a cherished member of the Sisters of Notre DamedeNamurinCincinnati,Ohio. With emotion in his voice, Harold D’Souza shares: “Sr. Therese Del Gino was, is, and always will be the Peace, Happiness, and Freedom behind Rohan, Bradly, Dancy, and me. During our darkest storms of slavery, Sr. Therese held our hands andwalkedusthroughtotheshores

A Community of Compassion in Action

ThestoryofEOIisnotjustaboutthe D’Souza family, it is also about a village of kind-hearted believers whofuelthefireofservice.

Bob Goodwin of Cincinnati, a steadfast supporter, expressed: “Harold D’Souza, thank you for everything you do to make the world a better place! It’s always a privilegetosupporttheimportant

Another unforgettable moment came when Bill Wilkinson, a Cincinnati community leader, walked unannounced into the D’Souzahome, nottoreceive, butto give.

“Bill entered our house as God to bless our happy home,” Harold recounted. “There was a time when we were made to believe we were untouchable, leprosy, andslaves.

Now, an American Bill entered our home with love, dignity, and generosity to donate to EOI Tanzania project. It was unbelievable.”

OneDollar,One Life

Supporters like Scott Faucheux beautifully capture the spirit of this mission: “Feeding destitute children isanoblecause.MyfriendHaroldis one of those rare people who sees suffering and does something aboutit. He is asking people to
