Yu-Chen Lee is a Taiwanese artist who works with photography. Her work explores the delicate connections between humans, animals, and the natural world. With a focus on themes such as animal welfare, marine debris, and the emotional bonds that tie us together, her photographs are a reflection of the beauty, fragility, and complexity of life.

After graduating from the National ChengChi University in Chinese Literature and Diplomacy, she moved to the UK to specialise in Photography where she obtained an MA Degree at the University of Brighton.

Since 2019 her photos have been displayed in several exhibitions all around the world: Group ExhibitionPerspectivas at Artly Mix, Brazil (2023); MA Summer Show - Disclosive at the University of Brighton, UK (2023); Book Exhibition - 23.313, 121.457 at Taipei Art Book Fair, Taiwan (2022); Group Exhibition - Retell the Blank at Onfoto Studio, Taiwan (2020); Exhibition - Story of Myanmar at Bopiliao Historic Block, Taiwan (2019).

Yu-Chen Lee è un’artista taiwanese che lavora con la fotografia. Il suo lavoro esplora le delicate connessioni tra esseri umani, animali e il mondo naturale con particolare attenzione a temi come il benessere degli animali, i detriti marini e i legami emotivi che ci uniscono, le sue fotografie riflettono la bellezza, la fragilità e la complessità della vita.

Dopo essersi laureata in Letteratura Cinese e Diplomazia presso l'Università Nazionale di ChengChi, si è trasferita nel Regno Unito per specializzarsi in Fotografia dove ha conseguito la Laurea Magistrale presso l'Università di Brighton.

Dal 2019 le sue foto sono state esposte in diverse mostre in tutto il mondo: mostra collettiva - Perspectivas presso Artly Mix, Brasile (2023); MA Summer Show - Disclosive presso l'Università di Brighton, UK (2023); Mostra del libro - 23.313, 121.457 alla Taipei Art Book Fair, Taiwan (2022); Mostra collettiva - Retell the Blank presso Onfoto Studio, Taiwan (2020); Mostra - Story of Myanmar al Bopiliao Historic Block, Taiwan (2019).

FRAGMENTS OF THE SEA | DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE ISLANDS

In Taiwan, along the coast, one can find various types of rubbish; some of it originates from distant lands, while the rest is discarded by the locals. The debris reappears shortly after beach cleanup activities.

Upon arriving in the UK, the photographer Yu-Chen Lee observed the same situation repeating itself, in the other part of the world. She began to realise that when we believed we were gazing at the sea, we were watching a garbage soup. Even though the beaches in Sardinia are considered clean, this beautiful island with its abundant marine resources is being invaded by human-made rubbish.

From East to West, images of marine debris are a daily and continuous presence in the media, and this should have already made us all more aware and attentive to the issue. However, the amount of rubbish continues to increase. The inconsistency lies in the fact that people love the sea; we enjoy taking moonlit walks on the beach, swimming in the crystal-clear ocean, or diving into the water. We feel a deep connection to the sea, but we seem to be desensitised to the problem of rubbish.

This awareness is the narrative thread of Fragments of the sea. Dialogue between the islands.

The photographs you are about to see tell the coasts of three islands, different in landscape, geography and history but connected by the presence of the debris. Behind each photograph, there is a contradiction, a subject that we would like not to see, an alien in the natural marine environment.

With this new exhibition, we offer a different way to gaze at Taiwan, Great Britain and Sardinia seas. Using the contradiction, Yu-Chen Lee disguised marine debris into fragments of the sea to catch our attention. We may initially believe we are looking at the sea or a part of marine life, only to realise that we are in front of images of rubbish. Observing the photographs you can go beyond the surface, feeling the impact we all have on our world.

FRAMMENTI DI MARE | DIALOGO TRA LE ISOLE

A Taiwan, lungo la costa, si possono trovare diversi tipi di rifiuti; parte di essi proviene da terre lontane, mentre il resto è il risultato dell’azione delle comunità del posto. Nonostante le attività di pulizia delle spiagge, i detriti ricompaiono poco dopo.

Al suo arrivo nel Regno Unito, la fotografa Yu-Chen Lee ha osservato che la stessa situazione si ripeteva nel versante opposto del mondo. Comincia quindi a rendersi conto che quando crediamo di guardare il mare, spesso stiamo guardando a soup of garbage, letteralmente una zuppa di spazzatura. Anche se le spiagge della Sardegna sono considerate pulite, questa bellissima isola e le sue abbondanti risorse marine vengono invase da rifiuti prodotti dall’essere umano.

Dall’Oriente all’Occidente, immagini di detriti marini sono una presenza quotidiana e continua nei media, e questo dovrebbe averci già reso tutti più coscienti e attenti al problema. Tuttavia, la quantità di rifiuti continua ad aumentare. Un’importante incongruenza sta nel fatto che le persone amano il mare, passeggiare sulla spiaggia al chiaro di luna, nuotare o tuffarsi in acque cristalline. Sentiamo un profondo legame con il mare, ma sembriamo essere desensibilizzati al problema della spazzatura.

Questa consapevolezza è il filo conduttore di Fragments of the sea. Dialogue between the islands - Frammenti di mare. Dialogo tra le isole. Le foto che stai per vedere raccontano le coste di tre isole, diverse per paesaggio, geografia e storia, ma collegate dalla presenza dei rifiuti. Dietro ogni foto c'è una contraddizione, un soggetto che non vorremmo vedere, un alieno nell'ambiente naturale marino.

Con questa nuova mostra proponiamo un modo diverso di guardare i mari di Taiwan, della Gran Bretagna e della Sardegna. Usando la contraddizione, Yu-Chen Lee ha mascherato i rifiuti marini in frammenti del mare per attirare la nostra attenzione. Inizialmente potremmo credere di guardare il mare o una parte della vita marina, per poi renderci conto che siamo davanti a immagini di spazzatura. Osservando le foto puoi andare oltre la superficie, sentendo l'impatto che tutti noi abbiamo sul nostro mondo.
