As we welcome the promise of a new year, I am reminded of the incredible journey 2020 has been. While enduring the grueling hardships and unforeseen challenges, our industry continued to provide the reliable and robust connectivity that Iowans needed most. For decades, our organizations have worked hard to demonstrate the importance of our networks to our communities – and that significance has been illustrated as thousands of Iowans continue to work from home.

This year has given us the opportunity to both celebrate successes and evaluate weaknesses – progressing us onward in our ardent commitment to deliver an excellent Client experience. Despite evolving customer needs and regulatory changes, we remained steadfast to delivering the critical connectivity, services, and infrastructure that allowed Iowans to not only sustain, but to grow.

Together, Iowa telecoms met the challenges head-on and showed our communities that we are dedicated to connecting students to teachers, patients to doctors, businesses to Clients, and families to one another. And that is something to be proud of. Through our partnership, our organizations provided a platform for grandparents to watch high school graduations, family members to safely receive virtual health care, and young Iowans to connect with classmates from the safety of their own homes. These are a few of the accomplishments that bring me joy this season. And I share that joy with all our valued Employees, Clients, Partners, and Shareholders.

So, as we tie a bow on the final days of this year, I encourage you to reflect on the achievements that were cultivated from this year’s adversity. Those achievements will fuel us as we move toward a post-pandemic world – stronger and more connected than ever.

Alpine Communications When it comes to serving families and businesses in Northeast Iowa, Alpine Communications’ vision is clear: Connected communities become thriving communities.

With their main office located in Elkader, Alpine’s 17-person team is guided by the organization’s mission which allows for growth, improvement, and impact. In addition to positively impacting the families and businesses they serve, Alpine supports their communities by giving over $15,000 in annual charitable contributions. Some of this support stems from Alpine’s active participation in the Aureon Charity Grant Program, including being the sponsor of four Q3 charity grants in 2020, showcasing that their impact goes far beyond connectivity.

Since 1997, Alpine Communications has improved the landscape of their service area by identifying opportunities to leverage services, expertise, and resources. By providing WiFi at community events or county fairs, serving on economic development boards, volunteering at churches and schools – Alpine consistently impacts the communities they serve.

In 2019, Alpine Communications hosted the Connected Communities Summit and brought leaders and community stakeholders together to learn how broadband can grow in their region. This engaging event helped stakeholders learn to leverage fiber broadband to grow their communities.

How long have you been with Alpine Communications and what was your journey to this role?

I began my role as General Manager/COO of Alpine Communications in February 2004. Prior to that, I spent a few years in public accounting auditing grain cooperatives, ethanol plants, etc., as CFO at a Grain Cooperative in Hanska, Minnesota and as CFO at New Ulm Telecom.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering a career in telecom?

Be prepared for change – every day brings new opportunities; be curious – we are afforded the luxury of working in an industry that is constantly evolving and we must embrace the opportunity to learn and evolve with it.

What trends are you and your colleagues seeing in the telecom industry today?

Several factors including customers, a variety of new products, and bundled solutions or customized solutions are making an impact on the industry. Lines between telecom companies and vendors are blurring and bringing a more complex blend of operational support services like service configuration, order fulfillment, customer care, and billing. The cost of handling these operations requires resources and different skillsets, which increase the financial overhead while customers seek more affordable services.

What excites you about your role with Alpine Communications?

I have the opportunity to work with people that truly care about the communities we serve with the primary objective of enabling rural Iowa to thrive in these challenging times.

What challenges do you see for Alpine Communications and/or telecoms in the future?

We need to upgrade our IT and connectivity infrastructure and focus on providing data and voice services that are high quality, reliable, and affordable. Security of the networks has become a major priority, while we are facing challenges with the emergence of new threats that are powered by new technologies and providers. So, several operational and technical innovations are needed to meet customer expectations of security, 100 percent reliability and access at lower prices from end to end (network to the device level in the home).

Do you have any final thoughts to share with our readers?

Be curious, tenacious, and courageous. It is difficult to determine which of those three is most important, but during these times I would focus on courage – do the right thing – for the employee, customer, owners and the industry.

Products & Solutions Tim Schieffer, Director – Products & Solutions, joined Aureon in November 2019 to develop the Product Management team and assist them in implementing a strong Product Management structure. With an entire year under his belt at Aureon, Tim has been doing just that along with collaborating with his team to launch new solutions that will provide high quality services to our Clients.

Get to know Tim Schieffer as he discusses his role at Aureon and the important work of his department.

On a day-to-day level, who are the key stakeholders that you interact with and what solutions does your team deploy?

I work alongside multiple departments to ensure Aureon offers a suite of products that meet the needs of our Clients and help their businesses grow.

What do you love most about Aureon?

Being able to design and develop products that meet the needs of our Clients and delivering those products alongside the great people who work at Aureon. The team members who work at Aureon are so caring about our company and Clients. This level of passion and ownership is not common among workplaces and when you find that many people who care that much about a company – you are going to get great work.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Product Management is something that I am passionate about because it touches all sides of the organization and is influenced by all of us. That influence means that we need to be aware of the competition, the current customer base, the different impacts on Aureon and so many other things. Once we evaluate all those factors, we can recommend options to the organization and implement the approved activity to better serve our Clients and our Shareholders.

What excites you about coming to work each day?

Getting to work with passionate people and work on activities that are truly going to impact the strategic direction of the organization.

About the Product Management and Solution Architecture Teams: Describe the impact of your department’s work: The Product Management team provides the right products to the right Clients and prospects at the right time. To create that impact, Product Management needs to make sure the right amount of information is available on all our products to the different departments within Aureon. It also means that Aureon is properly informing our existing Clients and prospects of the products and services that we provide today or are currently working on to expand our product offerings. Solution Architects provide reliable support for internal teams, resulting in higher quality quotes for the right Aureon solutions, leading to happier internal and external Clients.

What are some goals that your department is focusing on?

Product Management goals include developing more reporting around our existing products to ensure that we are monitoring total product performance around customer counts, opportunity pipeline, product profitability and more. In addition, Product Management is planning key enhancements to improve our overall value to existing Clients and deliver new value to prospective Clients. Solution Architecture’s focus is to improve the efficiency of solution design and quote support.

Ripple Effect Social Spotlight Showcasing the celebrations, wins, updates, and great news of our partners!

The Ripple Effect program positively impacts Iowans by supporting initiatives that make our communities stronger.

By partnering with local telecommunications providers, Ripple Effect provides financial and technical assistance to businesses, industries, and communities throughout Iowa.

Farmers Cooperative Telephone Company (Dysart, Iowa) Farmers Cooperative Telephone Company received a Ripple Effect planning grant for a feasibility study regarding the potential $1.3 million local capital campaign to build a new daycare in Dysart, Iowa. Little Knights Learning Center currently employs 13 staff including 10 classroom teachers. The Little Knights Learning Center Board expects the building project to be completed by July 2021.

Aureon Scholarship Program is Now Accepting Applications Aureon is pleased to announce that the Aureon Scholarship Program launched on November 9 in celebration of National STEM Day, which took place on Sunday, November 8. This scholarship program makes funds available to students who plan to pursue a STEM-related course of study (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics) after graduation. The Aureon Scholarship Program awards a total of $10,000 in funds to students residing in a home with service from an ITC: one $3,000 scholarship, two $2,000 scholarships and three $1,000 scholarships.

High school students who wish to apply for the Aureon Scholarship must apply by the deadline, March 1, 2021.

Winners will be announced in early May 2021. A marketing toolkit containing promotional materials, social media plans, and sample communication is available to your organization. Click here for your marketing toolkit!

2019 Aureon Scholarship Recipient Feature Ellie Diersen | Odebolt, Iowa

Growing up in a rural community near Odebolt, Iowa meant that Ellie Dierson did not have many opportunities when it came to STEM education. In fact, there weren’t many female students at Ellie’s high school even interested in STEM fields. It wasn’t until an experience at Iowa State University that she decided that math and science were interesting to her. “My interest in the STEM fields were the reason why I decided to attend Iowa State University,” Dierson said.

“The Aureon Scholarship Program helped me get into the world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, which has given me a sense of belonging.”

“As far as my major goes, I decided on Aerospace Engineering because I have always been interested in planes and how they work. As I am getting into higher level engineering classes, I am enjoying being challenged and showing people that I can be successful in STEM, no matter what anyone else has told me,” she said. “The Aureon Scholarship Program helped me get into the world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, which has given me a sense of belonging.”

Ellie stays busy at Iowa State by participating in the Engineering Honors Program and the Tau Beta Pi Scholars Program. Thanks to the Aureon Scholarship she received in 2019, Ellie was able to pay off her tuition and focus more on her studies. “Through the Honors Program I was able to gain research experience with a professor on campus during my freshman year. These research opportunities align with what I want to do after graduation,” she said.

Upon graduation from Iowa State, Ellie plans to work with a company that researches automated flight and how to make it safer and more reliable. According to Ellie, this career is important to her because the world is becoming more reliant on technology, and she wants to help humanity the best way she can.

“I have learned that it is important for women to get involved in STEM fields because the more diverse the group of people are that you’re working with – the more success you will have. I have had the opportunity to pursue a STEM career through the support of the Aureon Scholarship Program.”

Network Updates PoP Site Upgrades and Additions In November, Aureon completed the relocation of our Omaha PoP site to a new floor within the 1623 Farnam building. After careful planning and execution, all services and equipment were successfully migrated.

Aureon’s teams have also implemented hardware additions or upgrades to several PoP locations.

This work has been done to ensure the best possible experience for our Clients, as well as meet the demand in growth and retire old hardware as needed. Aureon has also begun the process of adding new sites along our network, as needed, to continue to deliver direct services to more of our ITC partners.

Outside Plant (OSP) Fiber Projects Approximately 80 miles of fiber has been placed which will add resiliency to the fiber network.

Aureon’s Network Engineering team is nearing the completion of four fiber installations that will allow Aureon to continue to create additional transport rings and pass along more business customer opportunities.

Aureon’s DDoS Mitigation Webinar Listen to Scott Johnson, Director of Network Engineering and Will Hughes, Network Architect discuss plans to upgrade Aureon’s Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) mitigation equipment.

Aureon has selected Netscout (Arbor Networks) to replace the previous version of the Arbor Networks platform that was installed many years ago. This webinar reviews the benefits of this upgrade including overall increased network protection and the deployment timeline.

Service Level Assurance Aureon selected OcularIP to replace legacy SLA monitoring and reporting software. This software implementation began in Q3 of 2020 and is currently operational. Migration of all wireless towers is underway and will be mostly completed by mid-January of 2021. Aureon will be utilizing this software in conjunction with strategically placed hardware across our networks to measure and report service availability for all our Clients.

Legislative & Regulatory Updates 5G Fund for Rural America Established by FCC The FCC adopted rules creating the 5G Fund for Rural America, which will distribute up to $9 billion over the next decade to bring 5G wireless broadband connectivity to rural America. According to the FCC, 5G represents the latest advance in mobile wireless technology which promises increased speeds, reduced latency, and better security than 4G LTE networks. OCIO Releases New Iowa Broadband Map On October 28, the OCIO released the new and updated Version 3 of the TSA map showing broadband availability in Iowa. View the updated Iowa Broadband map here.

NG911 and Database Migration Comtech has resumed PSAP conversions and advises providers to continue dual provisions with the 3rd party 911 address verifier you use until all PSAPs are migrated to NG911. Dual provisioning will continue until migration is county specific. Learn more about NG911 and database migration.

Successful RDOF Auction To Expand Broadband To Over 10 Million Rural Americans The FCC announced winners of the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF) Auction on December 7. Congratulations to our Partners across Iowa who were awarded funding to further deploy their networks to rural communities.

Aureon to Begin Beta Testing for Caller ID Authentication (CIDA) The 2019 Traced Act set forth a framework for reducing unlawful robocalling using SIP-based secure token caller identity verification, referred to as STIR/ SHAKEN. This act also set forth a requirement that any telecommunications company not implementing Secure Telephone Identity Revisited (STIR) and Signature-based Handling of Asserted Information Using toKENs (SHAKEN) would need to take “reasonable measures” to reduce the effects of unlawful robocalling.

The FCC recently announced they will allow small voice providers (less than 100,000 subscribers) to file for an extension on STIR/SHAKEN compliance.

However, telecommunication companies must have alternative antirobocalling services implemented by June 2021 to reduce the effects of unlawful robocalling.

Beta testing has begun for Aureon’s Caller ID Authentication (CIDA) services with a group of ITCs and should conclude in January. Aureon’s STIR/SHAKEN and Caller ID Authentication services are scheduled for launch on February 1, 2021. These services will provide anti-robocalling measures that are Traced Act compliant and will enable ITCs to reach their goals for reducing the effects of unlawful robocalling activity.

Completion of NCS Router Software Changes Update Over the course of the past three months, Aureon’s Network Operations team strategically performed software changes to Cisco NCS routers throughout our network, as recommended by our vendor. This series of maintenances was performed to ensure network resiliency and create a more stable debug capability to aid in future analysis of NCS platform routers. The completion of this work ensures a strong and updated network experience for your organization with improved consistency, reliability, and resiliency.
