Washington, D.C. The National Mall is usually the center of every visitor’s trip to Washington DC. This tree-lined area of parkland stretches two and a half miles from the Potomac River to the United States Capitol on Capitol Hill and is adjoined by the White House. At one end of the National Mall, known as West Potomac Park, the Lincoln Memorial faces the Reflecting Pool with a good view of Arlington Memorial Bridge, Constitution Gardens, the Tidal Basin and the Washington Monument. Further towards Capitol Hill are a number of museums and galleries, among which are many of the Smithsonian Institution’s museums, including the National Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of the American Indian, and the Smithsonian Institution building.

American University Situated within the northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., American University’s traditional-style campus has much to offer students in the way of comfort, modern conveniences, and quick, easy access to city life. Our 84-acre, tree-lined campus, which was designated as a National Arboretum, is located at the top of Embassy Row in one of the most attractive, safe, and residential areas of our nation’s capital. The center of campus, also referred to as “the quad,” is a focal point of student life not only because our academic buildings line its grassy borders, but also because it’s a place to meet-andgreet with friends and student groups, catch an impromptu game of ultimate frisbee or take part in an after-class debrief with professors. Another favorite spot on campus is the beach volleyball pit located between the athletics fields. The adjacent grassy hillside is also a well known hangout for students on game days.

Reeves Field Reeves Field is one of the premier soccer facilities in the Washington, D.C., area. In 2002 the field earned College Soccer Field of the Year. In 2005, Reeves underwent a $300,000 renovation to construct a new foundation, replace the drainage system and install a new playing surface. Beside being home to the AU men’s and women’s soccer programs, Reeves has also played host to professional and national teams. Throughout 2008, the U.S. National Team will use Reeves Field to train for World Cup 2010 Qualifying. In 2004, Barcelona, Blackburn, the U.S. National Team and the Women’s World Cup team used Reeves as a training facility. In the summer of 2000, AU served as the practice site for Newcastle United. Major League Soccer’s D.C. United, Miami Fusion and San Jose Earthquakes have also practiced at AU. National teams from the USA, Bolivia and Portugal trained at Reeves in 1996 in preparation for Summer Olympic games.

America’s Soccer Capital The soccer atmosphere in Washington, D.C., is among the most passionate in the United States. The nation’s capital had the unique privilege of hosting the 1999 Women’s World Cup, the 1994 World Cup and the 1996 Olympic Soccer games. Both the men’s and women’s U.S. National Teams have become especially enamored with the Washington area, and more specifically, RFK Stadium. The men’s team has hosted the U.S. Cup three times, in 1993, 1995 and 1996, winning all but one match. The women’s team also competed in the 1995 U.S. Cup at RFK. Both sides play numerous “friendlies” against other nations and chose Washington as one of their home sites for qualifying matches for the 1998 World Cup. As a charter member of MLS, D.C. United first stepped onto the pitch in 1996, and the team from the Nation’s Capital would quickly set the standard for excellence in the league on the field and in the stands. In its short, eight-year history, D.C. United has earned more domestic and international honors than any other American side, done battle against some of the world’s most famous clubs and built a fiercely loyal and dedicated fan base that understands and appreciates world-class soccer.

Academic Support The academic support program for student-athletes, a collaboration between the Academic Support Center and the Department of Athletics, assists studentathletes in successfully attaining academic goals and creating a balance between academics and athletics. The program serves to promote responsibility and initiative while encouraging studentathletes to take advantage of the rich resources offered at American University. Academic counselors work with student-athletes on skills needed for success in the classroom, and provide information about educational options, university and NCAA requirements, as well as policies and procedures. The program focuses on the development of the total person through individual meetings, study hall and tutoring, and life skills workshops. AU’s academic support program coordinates with faculty, advisors, and coaches to support each studentathlete.

Jimenez was a two-time captain and four-year starter at AU (2000-04) and previously spent time as an assistant coach at George Mason University. “There is no doubt in mind that Anabel is a great addition to our staff and we welcome her back to our AU family,” said Head Coach David Bucciero at the time of her hiring on April 28, 2008. “She is a fantastic player that will be a great role model for our current players. In addition, she gained a lot of experience as an assistant at George Mason and I look forward to continuing to help her grow as a coach.” Jimenez began serving as a volunteer assistant at George Mason in January 2007, and assisted in practice and game day preparation, official visit planning and monitoring and coordinated team travel. She was also responsible for all community service projects. Jimenez also served as the Assistant Director for Drake Soccer Camps. At American, she was a four-year starter and two-year captain. In 2002 and 2003, she was named All-Patriot League and she was selected team MVP both seasons. In 2002, she was selected as the Patriot League Tournament MVP after leading the American to its only PL Championship.

Rauenzahn graduated from Maryland in December 2003 with a degree in English, but continued to work with the team as an assistant coach through 2003-04 school year. She worked closely with the student-athletes on practice preparation and fitness work. Additionally, she assisted with official visits, game day operations, summer camp coaching, community work and game organization.

After graduating from AU, Jimenez played professionally for the VFL-Wolfsburg in Germany. Additionally, she competed for the Northern Virginia Majestics, Washington Freedom, and is currently a member of the Maryland Pride. She is also the head coach for the Classic MSI Renegades U19, MSC Moxie U15, and Bethesda Rush U14 girls teams. Jimenez holds an NSCAA National Coaching Diploma.

A local product, Rauenzahn attended Good Counsel High School in Wheaton, Md., where she led her team to a No. 1 ranking with 45 goals and 18 assists in her senior year. In her career, she scored 85 goals and had 42 assists. She was named to The Washington Post All-Met First Team three times, including being honored as the Player of the Year in 1998.

Jimenez is a native of the Washington D.C. area. She played four years of high school soccer at Bullis High School in Potomac, Md., and was named All-Met. Jimenez played club soccer for the Bethesda Scorpions, winning seven state titles. She also played two years for the Freestate United. She was a member of the Olympic Development Program for seven years and was selected to Regional Camp each year. Her team was finished second at Nationals in 1998.

Rauenzahn and her husband, Derrick, currently reside in Germantown, Md.

American University Women’s Soccer

2009 Season Outlook The American University women’s soccer team begins its 20th season with a solid veteran nucleus that will be augmented by a deep and talented freshman class. The Eagles bring back 18 letterwinners from its 2008 squad, including eight starters and six of the team’s top seven point scorers. David Bucciero, entering his second year as head coach, will lead an experienced group that has the potential to compete for a Patriot League Championship. The Forwards: The Eagles will look to senior Kelsey Brasher to continue her dominance in the attacking third. Brasher has led the team the last two years in both points and goals. Senior Mary Riegler, junior Marissa Crollett, junior Brooke Sheppard and sophomore Patricia Bailey will team with Brasher up top. Riegler ranked third on the team a year ago with ten shots on goal and Crollett finished fourth on the team in points. Senior Alexandra Kitrilakis, as well as freshmen Kristin Piorun, Carleigh Morba, Samantha Trotta and Jasmine Mohandesi, should also compete for time at the forward position for the Eagles in 2009. The Midfield: The Eagles will have a solid blend of experience and youth in the midfield in 2009. The unit is led by senior captain Erin Stebbins, who played in all 19 games for the Eagles in the center of the pitch for AU. Teaming with Stebbins will be junior Brooke Sheppard and sophomores Mikaila Weaver, Allison Slattery and Gabrielle Barbato. Sheppard started all 19 games for the Eagles last year and scored two goals, while Weaver, Slattery and Barbato look to build on excellent spring seasons. Freshman Michelle Montilio and Trotta will also play impact roles for the Eagles. The Defense: In 2009, with all four starters returning from a year ago, the back unit will be a strength for the Eagles. The defense will be anchored by senior captain Olivia Heditsian and junior Friederike Engel, both of whom were 2008 All-Patriot League selections. Teaming with Heditsian and Engel in the back are senior captain Erin Koch and senior Kelly McLaughlin. Both student-athletes are three-year starters. Sophomore Jenna Stasiewicz played in 12 games for AU last year at outside back, while sophomore Kimberly Kroll, as well as freshmen Stephanie Glover, Kendra Jones and Erika Robbins, should also see time in the back for the Eagles. The Goalkeepers: The Eagles have two experienced goalkeepers and two incoming freshman to compete for the void left by Kelsey Wiggins, the 2007 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year. Sophomore Arianna Efstathiou started four games during her freshman year and recorded nine saves on the season. Competing with Efstathiou will be junior Lindsey Farthing, who has seen action in each of her first two seasons, and incoming freshmen Mary Theresa Callahan and Klare Lazor.
