Turning the tables Joe Adams interviewing The Founder/Editor in Chief of The Movement REMIXED, Audrey Egypt-Young. Never wanting to talk about herself, always rather brag on other people. This is the beginning of what God has in store for her and she is being very obedient. Getting her TinaTurner on at the same time. ! Log onto www.TheMovementMagazine.net

The Movement Magazine Editor Egypt Young after our interview with the Operations Manager Skip Dillard (google Him) he is a very big deal at 107.5WBLS FM during this interview Skip will be dropping a lot of drinks. Very informative information will be highlighted for anyone interested in the entertainment industry and more.

Tray: I gotta shout out WBLS! It’s so interesting what radio is doing today. Can you tell us what a Program Director does so they can be clear?!

!

Skip: Basically a quality control person, responsible for music, hiring DJ’s, identifying people that may be future talent for the station, definitely 1st and foremost our job are the ratings, to make sure we’re satisfying the needs of our

listeners. So we not only keep the listeners we have but we get more of those that are available to the station. ! The way radio is going and how prevalent the Internet is, what keeps a radio station intact as opposed to being shut out like 98.7 Kiss FM?!

!

Well Kiss was a different situation in that it was a financial move in order to help the company that owns us now be able to weather a tough storm.

Skip: In 2008 of course until about 2012 with the market downturn with banks and housing radio was impacted because companies just simply stopped advertising. So we found ourselves sometimes 5 and 10 million dollars down year to year. Basically the company we were owned by (Inner City Broadcasting) they’ve been around 40 years went bankrupt. We were put into a holding company and was partially owned by Magic Johnson for a while and Emmis was able to pick us up and bring us into the family with Hot97 because they had been able to weather the storm part of it was releasing Kiss FM to ESPN. What keeps us relevant or any radio station that’s successfully relevant is connecting it to the lifestyle. For us we have a niche in that we serve African-Americans, if you look at TV today you have may have 400 cable channels, how many cater African Americans? I think today maybe 8, if you include the French Networks, one's like Bounce TV you also networks like WE TV. And Bravo that features some black shows But most of those are reality shows and not dramas or documentaries things that impact the African American community or positive impact I should say. !

!

The beautiful thing about black radio is that were part of the community we are part of the lifestyle and we can continue to be relevant. We're also perfect partners for the digital platforms and technologies that are out there. We have over half a million on Facebook alone in terms of followers , We have tens of thousands on all of our other social networks like Instagram and Twitter and so we able to create content for these platforms and that makes us very important. Radio as a whole is the fact that it is still free It's still portable very easy to take with you. You can hear it in every city and if it's done right you kinda get a local feel for the city you’re in When you turn on the radio station . There's is a lazy way to do it In which one size fits all and you have the same

DJs Basically laying down voices in other cities and so That makes radio less relevant because you get the same thing everywhere and there’s nothing is special about it. But you know our goal is to keep it special keep it local. Local is one of radio's greatest selling points always has been. When 9-11 happened in New York or the events that transpired during 911 the directly you saw the men separated from the boys and the women from the girls. Because you couldn't play 10 in a row anymore and you had to take the music off give people information, calm people down there was a lot of misinformation going on ,there were a lot of issues that were getting out there that were rumors that could have affected more people and possibly put them in danger.

where radio can really do its best and remain as relevant as any other media .!

!

So back in the day and this is probably a question that a lot of people have that listen to the radio and new artist who are trying to break in radio on stations such as 107.5 WBLS. DJ's use to break records so that's changed a little bit , well it’s changed a lot, it’s shifted. So what makes a program director for radio station pick a new artist and / or new song? !

A good communicator good communicator has to know how to stop the music, talk to people, people down damage control reach out to some leaders, community leaders. I was working in Buffalo New York at the time City Hall had just been cleared There were a lot of copycats after the World Trade Center, The Pentagon And Pennsylvania all of a sudden everybody started calling in Bomb threats and other stupid things. Buffalo City Hall was cleared, people were in the streets and I had to go on air for 4 hours And basically give people the best information that I could come up with. I called our city council got a person to come in to talk about what the city was doing to protect Buffalo New York given the fact that we are in the same state As New York City And all the devastation that was taking place there. People couldn't call up their loved ones And it was chaos. Being able to cut through all of that Was probably the most challenging day of my entire career. But that's

Number one, 1st and foremost it’s the story. Artists have to have a story. Maybe You're like Stacey Barnes a new artist that I really love John Legend's artist. With John Legend behind you what else do you need? You know for a rapper having a mentor per-se’ or mentee is something that is valuable in the hip hop genre. Or maybe you can open for some really big artists Like if Chaka Khan came to town and you’ve been selected as an opening act. Let’s say that you're doing all the festivals and received a standing ovation during Afropunk in Brooklyn and no one had ever seen you before. Perhaps a major record Executive like a Clive Davis anointed to be the next big thing that helps. It can be a story as little as selling out of the trunk of your car selling 10,000 records that you funded yourself Can you quit your job and you been making money just off sold out shows in places like at SOB’s, that you've been selling enough music through iTunes and CDs from place to place so that you don't have to work anymore. That immediately grabs our attention and it's something we look at.

I do love to meet with artists when I have time time is always a factor but I enjoy hearing their stories. First and foremost when I look at a record or I'm looking to put a record in the rotation I usually try to play something that's the heaviest the hottest on our playlist right after. Your record really has to be able to stand up with what else is there. You'd be surprised this is New York, but I get records all the time that are not mastered properly, the vocals are too loud, the music is distorted, you know it sounds like they did it in their garage. The quality is everything. It has to number one it has to be able to stand out and stand up against the Alicia Keys and those that were already playing. If you can do that then you have a shot. The one thing that I tried to tell artists is that we're not a record company I can't make your career I can't market you, airplay is marketing in itself but you gotta take that airplay and run with it. Can't talk to me and tell me you want to shoot a video 6 months later from now I don't care about the video. I care about the quality of your record And your ability to get out and market it yourself. Nobody watches videos in that way anymore. We still see them occasionally. But I'll tell you I see for every artist we play I see maybe one video out of 20 or 25 current records at one time That we are playing. People are just using videos in that way anymore.!

!

When choosing an artist for radio play, How relevant are their numbers on social media? !

!

There is some importance. But numbers can be fudged. I think more important is how you are utilizing It. The response that you have to the people that Tweet you & re-Tweet you, are you responding to their questions. Someone that I know slightly has a huge huge following on social media, (Please check the name of the Artist he mentions @ 9:34) she’s a Jamaican / Asian artist they tweet me and I’m like whoa you guys gotta stop this is crazy. It’s cool. But they got my attention. If you can do that you’re doing good. Social media is a big part of it but it's also how you utilize it. Not just putting pictures I like some female artist, not to pick on female artists but I

really don't need to see you in a thong and all that. That means nothing when it comes down to looking at your record. Put your clothes on and let's hear some music. That's all I care about. !

!

What do you think about the state of R&B right now?!

!

Here's the challenge that we have. There's some great stuff out here Tyrese's in the building now doing some projects 4 Film Festival tour as we record this. And I think you have artists that are really really pushing the envelope. Alicia Keys I've heard some of the upcoming project she hasn't sent out yet. Incredible. She's back to the old Alicia. And many others that are again, doing amazing things out there. It's good to see D'Angelo comeback and make a statement and strong. Maxwell who knows when he'll drop again but I hear it'll be phenomenal what he has, what's in the can. I think he has about two albums ready to drop. He just has to get them out there. But on the flip side. You don't have music in the public schools and that's where most of the artist come from. They don't come from high end private schools or school of the arts. Most of these young people are coming up in public school and we don't have arts and music programs. When I was coming up creative writing and poetry were part of the curriculum. It's not anymore. So when we complain that there’s some song that's out there now, some rap song (emulating a s illy rap song) how are you going to know anything more than that as a student if you're not taught more than that. Cussing & calling women out of their name. So again, you needs Arts programs back in the schools as part of the curriculum. You can't hope to have another Stevie Wonder if you don't have that. Kids won't even make it to the School of the Arts if they don't have music in the elementary schools and even preschool education. That's something that I think has stalled us a bit. But there's always hope. I mean I mentioned Stacy Barthe earlier. And I can think of half a dozen others artist that have us excited right now. And feeling like there are some good things happening out there. But we need more.

I have never endorsed a product until now. I have used many brands of make-up and all left me feeling as if I had a weight on my face. Today these incredible products were applied to my face by none other than the owner herself The Glamazon - Kim Baker and my face doesn’t even feel like I am wearing anything at all. This product is so lightweight and flawless, I truly recommend you try it for yourself and be amazed as I was.

Chris tell us what you do here at WBLS.!

!

Technically I'm creative Services director I'm head of production for all three stations WBLS Hot 97 & WLIB !

!

Do they keeping you busy?!

!

I practically live here !

!

Color for little bit about what your job consist of on a daily basis !

!

I Create copy. I write Scripts. I send them out to a voice guy for our campaigns. The audio comes back and I create promos and the promos and designed to get you very excited to want to come to our events. On top of that I oversee commercial production and that's what keeps the lights on and making sure my team is doing what they're supposed to be doing.!

!

When you say “that's what keeps the lights on” talk a little bit more about that for me!

!

Sure. Commercials are the blood of a radio station. !

!

See people need to hear this. Because we often think, like me. See I don't know about radio on the inside and I wonder, how do they keep running? Where does the money come from? ! ! Right. Well it's knowing that we have, say for the New York cluster, we have over five million listeners. So our sales team go to our clients and says”hey you went in?” “Your message can be heard by this many people. Specifically who you want. And they sell that for certain rate amount and that's how we make money. So even though people go awww commercials commercials!

Without the commercials, no one's paying the bills. So we have to have them and I have to oversee that.!

!

On broadcast radio as opposed to Internet radio what is the difference when it comes to advertisement and things of that sort? Do you put the two together? Do you work with internet radio also or is that something outside of your realm?!

!

We do have a digital component to the radio station that has its own stream of money and rates and everything else. Because our brands are so strong we go international. So we have account executives that focus just on that part of it. The digital side and it's a whole other revenue stream. !

!

Let me ask you. In your job day to day what's the hardest thing about your job for a student or person who's trying to get into radio? Who would want to be in your seat. What's the hardest thing about your job?!

!

Balancing creativity with administration. So making sure forms are filled out. Clients are happy. And saying OK how do I make something so exciting that everybody goes” I need to be there.” There are two ways of thinking. You know. When you’re filling out forms and paperwork and going “Ok let me get into my mind's eye & create something brand new. It’s the balance.!

!

So when you do events how do people become a part of your events if they would like to become a part of your events?!

!

From the client side?!

!

Yes.!

we are. He would be great to have. So we can pretty much reach anybody. !

!

How long have you been here?!

!

Totally in the business 26 years. At this particular location a little bit over 19 years. !

!

So what was it that intrigued you? If I could say that. Or what was it that made you want to be in radio behind the scenes? Because you know everybody wants to be the personality. What made it click for you ’I want to be behind the scenes’? !

!

Like most people in the business you start as a musician or whatever. I started as a DJ at 14.! Well if they have their own event that they're doing that's one thing. But if they want to be a part of our event for example like the Circle Of Sisters Expo We have over fifty thousand listeners that come to the Jacob Javits Center every single year. We advertise on air and say “ hey if you’re a vendor or you want to be a vendor, come on out and sell your product. We have rates for that and we have booths and you get to see all those people.” And we put it on the radio like crazy. !

!

And how do you guys pick the panelists? The talent? How does that allwork?!

!

As part of programming which is the department that's the parent of mine which is production, our Program Director & Assistant Program Director strategize with our General Manager to say ‘Okay who does our audience love the most? What names click and what's their credibility to this particular subject. And what panels would affect our audiences the most.” And after that, it's start making the calls. We can get to anybody. And I say that with confidence when you can get anybody you need to get to. I mean, you know if we could have the President there, he knows who

Automatically the ears were like hmmmmm what makes people dance? As a DJ you’re pretty much a Program. Director. You’re programming your set. And I loved being the guy getting everybody to go ho! And I said this is pretty cool. And I liked doing that. Every now and then I might grab the mic and say something but I don't liked being the one in the dark keeping everybody moving. And I could walk down the street and not get ‘Hey!” And still be happy with that. But over time I started to learn how to play guitar and I said you know what I like the engineering side. You know how sound affect people and vice versa. And I stuck with that more than wanting to be in front of everything. Which is fine too, but I like being behind the scenes.

“TWO GUYS KNOW LIES” Usman Sharif “On a JOURNEY to the TOP...enjoying every moment along the way!” To say that Usman Sharif is one of the entertainment industry’s, and in fact the world's rising talents would be an understatement. With numerous high-profiled feature film dramas and comedies and guest starring sitcom appearances credited to his name and a list of successful businesses he personally owns and in some cases operate, the cliché, “the sky is the limit” truthfully applies to this extraordinary, yet humble man. Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, Usman has two sisters and three brothers. Although his parents divorced when he was eight, Usman remained close with his Father whom he credits his strong faith and entrepreneurial spirit. This lead Usman to eventually major in business administration at Essex County College, graduating in 1994. Tia Jannah - The Bone Artist In Tia’s words My current series “Rhythm” sculptures is inspired by Hurricane Katrina of August 2005, its profound and soul-wrenching impact on New Orleans and its people. Many died - some physically, others emotionally, and mentally. The "Rhythm" series represents the hope of new life to those who were affected. I have also created pieces that represent the establishment of mankind and the Egyptian culture.

As I work with bones, I am exploring the idea that there is a period between death and rebirth. Not only do my bones have new life, I have the sense of new life - of creating new life. Like the discovery of a Divine gift, I experience joy, energy, and self accomplishment. I try to convey all of this in my work.

Three dimensional art has always caught my eye - art with texture and a distinctive quality. I first started designing using bones just because I wanted to use a recycled material that was unique. I have come to realize, that my bones have a deeper message beyond the artistic. In my work I give bones new purpose and meaning. Bones traditionally represent the physical, emotional, and finality of death. My bone sculptures represent life, energy, breath, and survival.

I begin each piece by trying to visualize the mental enigma of an object or symbol and the strong meaning behind it. I then find the bones that fit the puzzle best. The colors I choose to use most often are bronze and copper. I feel that these colors give my work a rich, strong earthy quality while preserving a sense of “age” in honor of a life lived. I know a piece is done, when it is at a state of being “alive”.

I am ultimately interested in the reactions of visitors to my exhibit, hoping that people feel the “chill” of the resurrection and enjoy the rebirth of dead bones.

Tia loved art as a child. Her mother & step-mother are artists and both inspired her to pursue her interest in art. In high school, Tia knew that no matter what road she took in life, that she would want to do something in the field of art. She attended Gibbs College and received her Associates Degree in Visual Communications and Applied Science. Post graduation she took on various odd-end jobs, until she was hired by the United States Postal Service in 2003, where she currently works. She has never stopped dreaming that one day she would do something with art.

Continue Tia Jannah She tried teaching herself web-design, dreamed of one day opening up her own art school for children, and wanted to experiment with pottery, metal and glass, none of which intrigued her long enough. She then started thinking about creating sculptures out of recycled items, because she thought that it would be a great way to reuse something and give it new life and meaning in a creative way. A coworker of Tia’s from the U.S. Postal Service, mentioned an artist by the name of Chakaia Booker. Chakaia is an artist that creates amazing sculptures out of recycled tires. The uniqueness of his sculptures, inspired Tia to come up with the idea of using recycled bones as an interesting art medium. Tia decided to do some research on bone art and discovered that no one had done the type of bone art that she envisioned.

knowledge of entrepreneurship, by enrolling in an accelerated class on the subject entitled, "Rising Tide Capital". The class not only helped fuel the skills that Tia needed to focus on selling her art, but also helped start her "Senior Therapeutic Art" service. Her art classes are not your typical senior arts and crafts classes. She offers "Art Basics", a curriculum on teaching the elements of design and color theory, and "Crafts with a purpose" a curriculum of crafts that the seniors would want to keep, sell or give away as gifts.

October 2013, Tia and her best friend Amira, an editorial hair stylist, came up with the idea of collaborating and becoming trail blazers in their own right, in order to help propel their individual career goals. Together, they formed "Bizarre World". They kicked off their first art and hair exhibit on March 15, 2014 in Montclair, New Jersey. "Bizarre World" is not your typical art exhibit, it is an experience. Tia's dream is to travel the world and share the "Bizarre World" experience with other cultures.

Tia wanted to create something unique, something that you would want to purchase as a decorative piece for your home, or office. She then started collecting, cleaning, & drying bones from left over meals. She was not sure exactly how she was going to use them, but she found the concept not only interesting, but challenging as well. She knew that she wanted to use bones as the main medium in her art work. As a result of that thought process, she created three small wall sculptures and hung them on her kitchen wall. Curious as to what the reaction would be from her friends and family, she was quite surprised to get positive feed-back about the pieces. That positive feed-back inspired Tia to create her "Rhythm" series, which is a wall series of musical instruments created with bones.

Tia wanted to use her creativity to positively impact her community, so she volunteered at a local Senior Day Care, which she found to be a very heartfelt and rewarding experience. Tia then decided to expand her

In 2014, Tia decided to create a platform in order to give local or underground artists an opportunity to showcase their talents, so she created "Art Has No Rules". She kicked off her first art mixer on February 21, 2015. The art mixers feature an interesting variety of artists that showcase all genres of art, from visual to vocal. She currently hosts her art mixers in New Jersey/NewYork area and plans to expand to the Philadelphia.

As the Founder/Editor in Chief of The Movement REMIXED, I am extremely honored to be presented with this award from The Girls; Live, Love, Laugh, Inc. Continue to have upward mobility in all of your MOVEMENTS - Audrey Egypt Young

Allison James-Frison and she IS Girls; Live, Love, Laugh, Inc.!

!

Giving back to the community for which she was born and raised has always been important to Allison James-Frison. Allison is one of eight children born to the late Mr. Spencer L. James Sr. and Mrs. Zanna E. Hadley-James. Allison grew up in the Stella Wright Housing Projects of Newark, NJ. She was educated in the Newark Public School system and graduated from Central High School in 1987."

!

When Allison was 17 years of age, she lost her father due to a violent stabbing. The death of her father left Allison’s mother a widow and responsible for raising her eight children on her own. When Allison was 26 years old, her mother lost a longtime battle with diabetes. Not having parents forced Allison and her siblings to rely on one another for strength and direction."

!

Allison had faced personal struggles and obstacles as a teen and young adult. After her back then fiancée was shot and killed, she was determined to make a better life for herself. Allison worked to develop skills that would enable her to change her circumstances. Allison uses the adversities that she has overcome in her life as a catalyst of inspiration to young girls within her community. Fueled with the burning desire to make a difference in the lives of the “Allisons” of the world, came the emergence of Girls; Live, Love, Laugh, Inc. Allison believes that a little love, a helping hand, and guidance from someone who can relate to their real-life struggles, will make all the difference in a young girl’s life. Allison enlisted the assistance of other dynamic women from within her community who have had their own tragedy to triumph stories and yearned to make a difference. Girls; Live, Love, Laugh, Inc. was founded on a philosophy that with the proper tools, resources, leadership, and love, girls living in the inner city of Newark can beat the odds. The organization seeks to give all girls a chance to live, love, and laugh."

!

Presently, Allison is happily married to Andre Frison. While working as an Intermodal Service Specialist, Allison is pursuing her degree in Human and Social Services from Essex County College. She is also a Court Appointed Special Advocate for Children in Essex County. Allison holds certificates of completion in Parenting and Leadership and a Mentor 201: Communication Training Course."

!

In 2013, Allison spear-headed another community outreach initiative called Bags of Hope. During the winter months, she alone, distributes bags to Newark residents with the intentions of spreading hope into the crime infested, poverty stricken city streets. Allison is also an active member of Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Rakeem S. Thomas Sr. Allison sits on the Board of Directors as Secretary for Stella Wright Reunion Organization. She is also the Board Secretary for the Central High School Alumni Association. Allison has been featured on NewarkPatch.com in an article entitled: Allison James Raises Confidence, Positive Energy for Newark’s Girls; she has also been featured in the Movement Magazine Volume 1 article entitled: 10 Power Moves by Women of Color: - Allison James “Makes a difference in young girls’ lives.” Allison was the Honoree of the 2013 Central High School Alumni Associates Award of Merit for Mentorship and Community Service. She has recently been honored as one of Newark's 2015 Honorees for the "Women on Fire" Award
