WELCOME It’s the summer!! Welcome to our all new summer edition of !Audacious City Church Magazine. We’ve gone for a new design format and hope you enjoy all the new features within it. 2010 is moving along at high speed and we are fast approaching !Audacious conference in August. It is going to be the biggest and best conference we have

Amos 3:3 says “Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?”. God is doing amazing things in !Audacious City Church at this time as we choose to live as a people in agreement with one another. David writes in Psalms that the “Lord bestows His blessing, even life evermore” when we as a people live in agreement. As we look to the future it is with passionate agreement that we say our best days are ahead of us, God is building a

phenomenal foundation upon which he will build his Church and we have the amazing honour of being a part of it. Thanks for joining us on the journey and agreeing with us as we become all God has called us to be. Lots of love

a place to call home

We made !ACC our home because we loved their heart for the city and the way they are seeking to bring God's light to the community. They are living out the gospel rather than just talking about it. We wanted to be part of a Church that was making a real difference in the community we love, but did not lose sight of the poorest in the world through its partnership with Compassion. We were also specifically looking for a Church that valued kids and taught them about God's love for them and the world. Kids Rock is fantastic and it’s great to know our son is receiving great teaching week-in weekout. The more we find out about the Church the more we feel we share the same heart. Parenting Hi my name is Jen and I’m married to a great guy called Ian and have 2 daughters, Hope aged 6 and Ella aged 3. We are the regional leaders for the East Region and made this church our home about 2 and a half years ago. I can honestly say that being a parent is one the most wonderful and challenging things I’ve done with my life and being a parent of young children in church can add to these feelings.

I’m standing where they can see the trying to consciously talk about stage and have room to dance things completely unrelated to and have fun is a great start. My my girls as a way of reminding kids know me very well, warts me that I am a person in my own and all. Over time I have come right and God is doing things in to realise the power in them my life as well as in my family’s. knowing that if I’m having a bad week, I can still raise my hands and dance with them because worship is not about me, it’s about God and His goodness.

Please don’t get me wrong, my kids are great at distracting me when I’m wanting to focus and at times it is just tough. They always need the toilet just as the service is starting. They always want things to eat half way through the worship slot. I remember that I’ve not got any change for the Kid’s Rock offering and have to scramble around in my bag in the dark trying to find something. My back is aching because Ella is refusing to dance in worship without being carried (saves on gym membership though). I completely understand the demands and limitations that children of all ages, but especially young children can put on parents. It is easy to let these things control the service and before you know it, it’s home time. I really want to encourage you to try and not get bogged down with these practicalities and keep focused and enthusiastic. I can honestly say that trying to do these things has helped me to have a new sense of personal freedom on a Sunday and passion about growing and serving together as a family.

I believe it’s so important for children to feel that they are part of the church family and need to know other children and adults in the congregation for this to happen. Each service we have a time where everyone is encouraged to walk about and say hello to people. This can be a difficult time for young children, especially if they are shy or can’t speak much yet. We have found that you can’t go wrong with a good high-5. Children don’t

Shopping No doubt you will end up spending a large quantity of your student loan on looking and feeling good. Once again Manchester will not fail you, with a massive out of town shopping centre - The Trafford Centre - having everything you could ever ask for - honestly, take your mum, she’ll love it. In town The Arndale Centre is high street heaven, leading to King Street which none of you will be able to afford but it’s always nice to look at a Louis Vuitton bag though the window. The independent and quirky Northern Quarter offers a huge number of eclectic boutiques, including Afflecks Palace which could be described as The Camden Market of the North. Trust us, if you can’t find it in Manchester, you’ll struggle to find it anywhere.

Indian, Pakistani and Turkish restaurants and takeaways per sqm than anywhere in the world. A lot of these places also allow you to bring your own drinks, which is an added bonus. For kebab houses we recommend Abduls, you will find a few of them around the city. A kebab is not just a kebab!

Health & Fitness Strangely enough, you will find yourself feeling fitter at University because you’ll be walking everywhere. University also offers a whole host of Clubs and Societies to join and enjoy anything from football to formula one.

The Sugden centre off Oxford road and the Armitage centre in Fallowfield offer great student discounts on gym memberships and classes. Also, don’t forget the Aquatics centre, an Olympic swimming pool right on Oxford road, again Lots and lots and lots of places offering discounts. to eat in Manchester, from very nice restaurants to pokey little Keeping healthy is up to kebab houses. ED:

Being relatively new to the city and having relocated from London, the mega metropolis that is our fair capital in the deep south, I was a little nervous that Manchester wouldn’t have the creative edge and cultural richness and most importantly good food I’d become used to! Fortunately, my concerns were pretty short lived thanks in large part to the awesome people here at !ACC. I was soon introduced to some of the hidden (and not so hidden) gems in this great northern city. From bars to pizzerias, from libraries to cinemas and from cakes to clothes there’s a whole lot going on right under our very noses!

I was soon introduced to some of the hidden (and not so hidden) gems in this great northern city. architectural wow!

under one roof!

snack me!

The John Rylands library has to be one of the most gorgeous buildings I’ve been in in a long while. It knocks spots off the library in Elm Park where I got my ‘good readers club’ certificate! If you get a chance why not have a wander round this amazing place and enjoy the oldest known piece of the New Testament, the St John Fragment! Just try not to gasp too loud!

No not the Trafford Centre… Gosh! I’m talking about the cornerhouse. I went along to see the banksy film only to find out they do an amazing meal & movie ticket deal. And then on the way out I discovered their book shop, which had a wicked good magazine selection. Add to this their gallery space and you’ve pretty much got all the culture you can handle in one place!

Ok I could have just said go to the northern quarter cos’ the next few suggestions are all pretty much next door to each other! Let’s start with the Teacup Café. If you’re an indecisive person the food counter could have you stumped as it all looks so darn good! To help you out just order the dropped apple & cinnamon cake and a cup of tea and get a mini revelation of heaven!

!warning! do not go here unless you’ve just had a raise or a bonus! But if you want to look good the Thomas St Post Office has the nicest selection of streetwear this side of NYC. There’s some seriously lovely stuff for both guys and girls here, but if it’s all a little overwhelming you can just keep it simple and grab yourself a nice new pair of Vans.

So when I get to heaven and Jesus hands me the keys to my mansion, the smell I will be greeted with as I open my front door will be the smell of freshly baked pizza! But between now and then I’ll just have to keep up my regular visits to Dough, simply gorgeous food in a fantastic setting. and prices are pretty decent too. There’s even a Dinky Dough menu for kids! Too cute!

So there’s my little list of favourite fun finds and discoveries so far. This list might not be new to you, in fact you probably have a few haunts of your own. Well come on then… share with the group!

Welcome to Your Extraordinary!

-John Bevere

Have you often thought, “there must be more”? You’re not alone. I believe a fresh revelation of truth will unlock the God-potential within you. You probably know that by God’s grace you’re forgiven and saved, but do you know that His grace empowers us here and now in this life? “And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.” (John 1:16). Here’s the point so many miss: with grace we can receive the fullness of God’s nature! Grace is the gift that not only saved us but also imparts to us the completeness of Jesus. We are in Christ, He is in us, and we have the fullness of His nature. Without this insight, we cut ourselves off from that flow of grace. Most believe God’s grace has forgiven their sin and saved them from hell, but there is so much more! We have been given a new nature and we are empowered to walk in holiness with authority to bring Heaven’s will to earth. My life changed dramatically once I discovered grace not only includes God’s amazing forgiveness and promise of heaven, but also His empowerment in this life. Before this, I struggled trying to be good in my own strength. I found many of God’s instructions too difficult to fulfill, I battled inferiority and poor self-image as I wondered why there was so little eternal fruit in my life. However, once the realization came that I possessed the fullness of God’s nature, my life stabilized, blessings flowed and my impact for the kingdom greatly increased.

Many believe they are merely struggling sinners who’ve been forgiven – and someday, in heaven, they will be like Jesus. This fallacy keeps people in bondage and nullifies God’s power in their lives. The Bible tells us we are His children: “Beloved, now we are children of God” (1 John 3:2). If we are now His children, we now have access to fully operate in the character of Jesus. We have the ability to live as He intended us to live from the beginning—extraordinarily! We can live in His image, His likeness, possessing His ability – all through grace! You are a son or daughter of God. You possess His nature. You were meant for anything but ordinary!

ered life are not driven by personal gain or greed. They live to bring light, love, truth and resource to those they influence. In reaching beyond themselves they touch hurting humankind, and naturally flourish. Extraordinary living has been God’s plan for you from the beginning – nothing less.

Grace not only instructs us, it also empowers us to live above our human potential. We’re born again; brand-new people free to live an extraordinary life! The same power that raised Jesus from the dead abides in us. This is why the Enemy has strived to reduce grace down to merely a ticket into heaven. If you find out who you are, you will rise up and be a great threat to his work. You’ll be extraordinary and change your world!

To discover more about this life extraordinaire visit www.ExtraordinaryOnline.org and check out John’s newest book & curriculum, Extraordinary: The Life You’re Meant to Live.

But, you must truly believe this to begin enjoying a godly life, advancing in all areas of society. You were designed with the potential to be the most creative, innovative and wisest on earth! You were created to heal the sick and free captives! A revelation of who you are and what you are called to do awaits you… ask, seek, knock – and believe!

“All who receive God’s abundant grace and are freely put right with Him will rule in life through Christ” (Romans 5:17, TEV). This scripture shows we are to rise above the norm. We are influencers and leaders. If you’re a teacher, you can come up with the most innovative ways of communicating knowledge and wisdom. If you’re a designer, your creative ideas can be cutting edge. As a businessperson, you can have inventive ideas and keen marketing strategies that are ahead of the curve. You’ll know when to buy and when to sell. If you’re a stay-at-home mom, you can be the most imaginative mom in your neighborhood. As rulers in life, we will meet other’s needs by the exceedingly great power that’s in us. Those who find this grace-empow!ACC

My Story... I was prepping for a ballet show; it had been a busy few days of 14-hour rehearsals and we were finally getting the last few things sorted before the show started in two hours. I knew that one of the girls had been having trouble with her pointe shoes in final rehearsals but then I had forgotten about it and never gave it another thought. It was then I overheard a conversation and it became clear that the girl wouldn’t be able to dance in her shoes and her parents were going to be unable to do anything about it as her mum couldn’t afford new ones, and her dad was refusing to pay. It was then I knew that I had to do something, as I knew how hard this girl had worked towards the show.

ilovemygen ilovemygen isn’t a night, it’s not something you go to, it’s who you are! ilovemygen is a culture. It is about physically creating culture on this planet. It’s doing secret acts of kindness purely to show a city that someone cares and to inspire them to do the same. ilovemygen is also about making public demonstrations of this new culture to a city through acts that make a statement. Check out ilovemygen.com for inspirational real life stories of people loving their generation. Follow us on Twitter: @ilovemygen

Part of me was worried about the money, the reason I was working over my Easter holidays was to pay for my next semester at uni and pointe shoes aren’t cheap. Time was also an issue because I had so much to do before the show and I knew the dance shop would be closing soon, I realistically did not have enough time to get to find out the girls size and get to the shop and they often don’t stock every size. There was so much against me but I knew I had to do something, my heart was beating so fast and it broke my heart to think the girl couldn’t perform after all her hard work. That’s when I did it, I found someone else to chaperone my dressing room and I ran to the dance shop, arriving 5 minutes before closing time. I wanted to get her the nicest shoes possible and they had the perfect pair, perfect size. I got them to wrap them up and in the box I popped an ilovemygen card. I went back to the theatre and left the box at reception. Over the next hour a whisper rippled through the theatre, where were the shoes from? What did the card say? I stood back and smiled. Even the girl’s mum contacted the dance school to see where the shoes were from and to send them a card of thanks. I am so glad that the opportunity arose, that I was in the right place at the right time and as a result the girl got to perform knowing she was loved by someone. That was the best feeling ever! Keep sending your stories in to mystory@ilovemygen.com. !ACC

Glyn Barrett on the

of agreement

World Cup Final Sunday 11th July 7pm • Live at !ACC

In Genesis 1 v 26, on the sixth day, God spoke Adam into existence. God says “Let us make man in our image.” All of creation was in agreement with God. This is the first example of agreement in the Bible and today we are in agreement with everything around us, whether spiritual or secular. The power of agreement could be which football team to support, what to have for dinner, which car to buy, or something far more important like coming to church or accepting Jesus. It would seem that the power of agreement is in the very minor and major aspects of our lives and in the same way that God is incredibly detailed, so is this power. Agreement is a choice that has consequences, which can affect your future in a massive way. The opposite of agreement is disagreement and this can be seen as wrong or an injustice.

BOSS

to create and destroy people’s lives – imagine the difference we could make in our worlds if we agreed to always speak positive at home or at work!

>> Never agree with people that envy or do not like you. Not everyone will like you. >> Never agree with things that pull you down. You don’t have to. It’s not what the Bible says.

Act positive. God cannot be fooled by our motives. We need to serve and bless others, >> Never agree with not act in an irresponsible intimidation, fear or smallness. selfish way. David didn’t when he 2. Agreement unites hearts. faced Goliath.

Amos 3:3 says: ‘Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?’

Here are a few thoughts on the power of agreement. 1. Agreement is the key that unlocks the door. What you agree to will determine what doors will open in your life. The way you agree to think will determine the life that you will live. Proverbs 23:7 says: ‘As a man thinks in his heart, so he is’ Think positive. If your thinking is negative then it will only lead you to a negative place. If you think faith-filled optimism then you will reap faithfilled optimism. Speak positive. Hebrews 11 v 3 talks about the world being created by words. Words have the equal power

For two people to become married, they need to agree. Where there is agreement, there is oneness. What you agree to actually defines you, because you become one with that. 8 things we should never agree with: >> Never agree with those who are worse off than you. Not financially but spiritually. Psalm 1:1 says: ‘Blessed is that man who doesn’t sit in the seat of mockers.’ Don’t agree with people who aren’t where you are spiritually. >> Never agree with people who have nothing invested in what you do. Don’t listen to people who knock you for going to church and making the right choices

>> Never agree with mediocrity. Don’t settle for good, when great is possible. Jesus didn’t die so we could live routine boring lives. >> Never agree with your lot. Your God owns the cattle on a thousand hills! Marriage is an agreement that separates us from everyone else to one person so that two can become one. Agreement separates us from our past and joins us to God. It draws a line in the sand between all that has happened to us and all that God has for us. Choose to agree with positivity and everything God has for you. As we separate to him choose not to allow people (even those you know and love) to hold you back. This article is an extract from a series called “The Power of Agreement” by Glyn Barrett. For more on this visit the resource area and purchase the two-part CD.

>> Never agree with people who contradict the word of God. Only the Bible has final authority on the matters of faith. !ACC

SOUND ADVICE Malcolm Hill is a husband, father and pioneer of the live music industry. Since the early 70’s, his innovation, technical skill and risk-taking have made him into an influential expert, worldwide. We caught up with him to ask about the early days of his business and how God played a part in all of it. How did you first start out in the business world? My life until 15 had been a disaster. I was a horrible kid and a complete loser. I was branded ‘a waste of space’ and I agreed. But when I became a Christian, I was overwhelmed by a desire for freedom, and an audacious conviction that my future held something special that I could aim for. So I left school at 16, and turned my hobby (electronics) into a business. I called it Electronic Research and Construction. My other hobby was music, so pretty soon I was building amplification for the exploding Rock ‘n Roll music scene. So how did you go from being “that kid”, to being where you are today? I would say favour. Favour of man, and Favour of God. Ludicrous, insane favour. How else could a 16 year old ‘drop-out’, with no money, experience, training or contacts, build a business, that in less than 15 years would be a global leader, selling in 80 countries? For example, one day I offered to play bass for a Christian band; as we were packing up after our first rehearsal, we met another band coming in; their tech guy saw my amplifier, and took my number. The next day he rang and set up a meeting with Rupert Neve, THE inventor of Studio

mixing consoles. As the Neve consoles weighed 2 tons and cost 2 oil wells, the tech guy then commissioned me to design and build (probably) the world’s first portable mixing console for touring bands. One of the first consoles was for the first Greenbelt Festival, and by the 1990’s we had built tens of thousands. If you could go back in time and change anything, or do anything differently, would you? I wish I had read the Bible more and understood more about God’s plans for our prosperity. In actual fact, I ended up making the business my ‘God’. So, eventually, I had to give the business away, to get myself back to my true God. But now I know that God wanted me to have both.

What have been your greatest successes so far? Pioneering the sound equipment business and helping mould it into a pretty solid industry. Holding many world ‘firsts’ in product design. A unique record for the design, manufacture and supply of complete sound systems. Business-wise, it was the manufacturing company that made the money, and the property company that kept the money secure.

‘impossibles’: “MoR 1984” Three festivals in three days - in different countries - with the same system!!! Status Quo 1989 - 4 shows in ONE day!! And, of course, Live Aid. 23 bands in six hours. Global TV to Satellite time schedules! Great successes, but they didn’t make any money! More recently, starting up Rock-tech from scratch, has been very fulfilling.

Helping a whole new generation of talented All the other businesses were people, with a totally new really just for fun: client base, achieve great things in lighting and video, The huge Monsters of Rock sound systems, The massive as well as sound. US touring systems for Of course, I am also the best bands like AC/DC, A-HA, Dad in the world ever, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, but everybody already Gary Numan... knows that.................... A whole list of so-called

!AUDACIOUS ACADEMY

The !Audacious Academy is a 1 or 2 year leadership training programme that runs right here in our very own church. We thought we’d give you an insight into the life of one of our students; Hayley Charlton. Hayley is about to finish her second year here in Manchester after moving from the North-East. Here’s what she has to say...

46 •

!ACC

Hayley: Although I had been a Christian for a couple of years I rarely spent any time reading the Bible, and when I did it I only ever read the New Testament because the Old Testament appeared to be irrelevant to my everyday life. However I knew I wanted to do some form of in-depth Bible study when I took Philosophy and Ethics for my A levels. I remember being in class wanting to explain why I was a Christian and why I believed what I did and the reason I chose to live life differently to the rest of my class mates. Discussions would often end with me claiming something was in the Bible and then having no knowledge of where it was and what exactly it said. After finishing my A Levels, I decided to take a gap year that would involve expanding and developing my Biblical knowledge; a course that would give me a solid foundation. Initially I only wanted to do one year, however as soon as lectures began I was captivated. I soon realised that the Bible was neither boring nor irrelevant and is in fact vital for my development (both the New and the Old Testament) I eagerly soaked up everything that was presented to me and what excited me the most about the Bible is that no matter how much I learnt, there was always more to be revealed.

!AUDACIOUS ACADEMY

where to start in sharing some of the most memorable experiences, there really has been so, so many! Hayley: Before I came to Manchester I had never really heard of !Audacious so I had spent a lot of time looking into different Bible Colleges and organisations. I was looking for a course that was both academic and practical, but couldn’t find one that I felt was right for me. After a friend’s suggestion, I looked on the !Audacious website and as soon as I read the ‘welcome to the !Audacious Academy’ I knew that this was something I wanted to be a part of. ‘If you are looking for average, the !Audacious Academy is not for you! If you are looking for the ultimate, then why not send off your application today.’ This quote really stood out to me. Although I was nervous about applying to something I wasn’t familiar with, the statement ‘you can never cross chasms with small safe steps, only the leap will get you there,’ reassured me that this was something I needed to do. I chose to do the !Audacious Academy because everything it offered, I wanted; and even though I had looked into many different options nothing else seemed to even come close.

Hayley: I don’t even know

Being on Academy has exposed me to so many incredible things. Lectures with some of the world’s most influential and anointed leaders, touring around the county on the Reggie Dabbs tour, including eating pizza with him and having the opportunity to ask anything we wanted! The massive conferences, oneto-one discipleship, mission and being part of a church launch, I could go on and on. It’s been a crazy two years, beyond anything I could ever have imagined, and what has made the memorable experiences is the amazing friendships that have developed. The other Academy students literally have become like family!

away barriers I had put up against God and people, and also just allowing His truth to envelope my life so I could become the woman I was created to be. I have also learnt to lead myself and others, especially in this second year. I have been challenged to step up and take responsibility and ownership and to have the confidence to live a life worthy of my calling.

Hayley: Next year I will be continuing volunteering at !Audacious City Church, alongside doing a degree in counselling at the University of Salford.

Hayley: Whilst on the Academy I have faced many challenges but I know they have all been part of my journey and I have grown and learnt so much from each one. Identity was a massive challenge for me in the first year and it was a process of really finding out who God was rather than just who I thought He was. It enabled me to find out who I am and also what it really means to be in a relationship with God It involved a lot of stripping
