Animal

Older

The oldest known animal is the ocean quahog, a type of mollusc that lives for over 500 years. There are tortoises that have lived almost 180 years, and swans that have lived a century. (We wonder if they all get a letter from The Queen on their 100th birthday?)

Stronger

Large scarab beetles can lift 850 times their body weight. That’s equivalent to a human lifting 10 African elephants.

Bigger

The pygmy shrew eats twice its own body weight in insects every day. Despite that, it’s still the smallest mammal in North America!

Lazier

The biggest animal on the planet is the blue whale. Its heart alone is the size of a car! But did you know that it is also the loudest? A blue whale produces sounds louder than the engine of a jet, which can be heard 800 kilometres away. The biggest living animal on land is the African elephant.

Koalas can sleep up to 22 hours a day. On the other hand, some giraffes only sleep for two hours.

Smarter

Faster

Reaching speeds of over 100km/h, the cheetah is the fastest land animal. But did you know that the saltfish can go 5km/h faster in water, and the albatross reaches speeds of up to 127km/h in the air? Leaving all three in the dust though, is the peregrine falcon, which can dive at an incredible 270km/h.

The African grey parrot is apparently as smart as a 5-year-old human. It can recognise five shapes, count to six and distinguish seven colours. But the smartest known bird is in fact the crow, who will throw nuts on to the road so that passing cars crack them open.

Keeper

o camels have that no other animals have?

New Year’s resolution

A: Baby ca What are caterpillars afraid of?

What do you get when you cross a giraffe with a hedgehog?

A: Dog-erpillars. Why did the fish cross the ocean?

A: A six-foot toothbrush.

A: To get to the other tide! What cheese gets a bear out of a tree? A: Camembert (Bend your knees, slap both hands on your lap, and say “Come on, bear”!) Why do seagulls live by the sea? A: Because if they lived by the bay they’d be bagels.

Hungrier

For 2014, I’m creating my own vege garden, growing foods I love like carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, and also strawberries – to eat with my favourite ice cream! Having my own vege patch means I eat fresh, healthy and free. Plus, it’s good for the environment as I don’t have to drive my car to the supermarket as often or use plastic bags or other packaging that creates more waste. Join me and make your 2014 New Year’s resolution today!
