001_EARLY_EXPLORATION | My first art project was a full suit of Sci-Fi Space Soldier armor I had constructed for Halloween in 7th grade.

exercises of my BArch degree explored how simple geometries and letters could be combined with fills, hatches, and line weights to create complex, visually unique works. These exercises laid the foundations for my education in Architecture.

| Layering techniques trick the eye into viewing two dimensional objects in a three dimensional space. For example, the solid black shapes appear closer and “above” the lines and hatches behind them.

| Layering, patterning, and opacity are used to create the illusion that these objects are in fact three dimensional. The denser, darker “tops” and “sides” create “solid” forms while the much lighter bottom layer has been offset to create the illusion of a shadow.

| These sculptural experiments were created through random trimming and boolean commands in the digital modeling software Rhinoceros 3D.

| These studies were used to produce various sets of instructions that display how to break down or even recreate the solids that were produced earlier.

_2021_CANDYMAN_COLLABORATION | Grater Things has participated in multiple community collaborations. One involved a candy and Syracuse University themed t-shirt design with locally famed Uber driver “The Candyman”. The other combined the famous Syracuse University School of Architecture pattern with the “Grater” logo on bucket hats which were given out during freshman orientation.

007_PRODUCT_MERECHANDISING | Throughout my experience at Coach I spent time creating floorsets through the lens of architecture. Various factors such as item stock, pricing, color, size, etc. created limits unique to each floorset. This parallels conditions such as climate, weather patterns, context, availability and properties of materials, budget, site restraints, etc. which architects must consider when designing a building.

008_TABLE_FIXTURE

| This table, designed to be placed in the center of a store, merges shelves of varying height with a clothing rack while using recycled materials such as wood planks, metal sheeting, and metal pipes.

| The recessed base creates the illusion as if the table is floating while providing an area for dust and debris to collect that is hidden from a customer’s view.

| These digital models play with the term “protoarchitecture.” This exercise produced creations that are not designed as buildings but take into consideration spacial implications, stereotomics, tectonics, structure, etc. as if they were.

| This multi functional pavilion (primarily used for voting) was designed using similar elements and tectonic themes found in John Hejduk’s Wall House 2 (Groningen, Netherlands). | The very playful nature of this design is a very unique approach to the generally solemn act of voting, giving this space a more exciting and lively atmosphere. | This pavilion borrows materials, colors, the “wall” itself, and shapes from the Wall House 2 but modifies them to be used in new ways. It also builds off of Hejduk’s “tube-like” method of circulation.

| The process of voting heavily influenced this pavilion’s program and overall design. This pavilion offers a covered stage area for candidates to hold public campaign speeches and for civilians to hold events. Three tubes also lead into a cozy, lower area for civilians to occupy.

| The circulation of this space is symbolic in the way that it forces all of the voters to “come together,” as in recent years voting has driven people apart.

011_THE_COMMONS | This assignment challenged students to design a common space which a community could use in a postCovid-19 world. The site needed to include a market space for local vendors to sell products, an enclosed community center, public restrooms, a bus stop, a bike rack, and an amphitheater. | After visiting this site in downtown Syracuse, NY and studying its current state, I chose to take into consideration the existing paths of travel from the original site while focusing on versatility in order to incorporate all of these programs into the oddly shaped plot. | The site is divided into three main programs. The top space consists of paths, benches, and desks for people to use. The center space incorporates public restrooms, an underground bike rack and the bus stop inside of the enclosed community center.

Connected to this is the market space.

Lastly, the lower portion serves as a parking lot, grass field, or event space. | Certain paths from the original site were preserved while others were created based on the shortcut paths formed by foot traffic passing through the existing space.

| Operability was a prominent driver of this space’s design. The desks are able to be rotated and placed together to either work alone or collaborate with others. The roofs of the market huts could be assembled into large tables or completely taken down. The space defined by the remaining concrete walls could be enclosed by a net to act as an ampitheater while part of the community center’s roof could be raised to create head space for a stage.

| The exterior walls of the community center could be removed to create a seamless transition from outdoors to indoors meanwhile the interior walls could be moved around to accommodate any purpose. The bus stop is integrated into this indoor space allowing for travelers to stay warm during the winter. Not to mention, the underground bike storage elevator is also safely located inside. Lastly, the transparent acrylic panels on the roof of the community center could be individually opened in order to create passive ventilation. The roof also sports a series of fabrics such as a thermal fabric could be easily pulled across the roof to keep heat in, a fabric that provides shade in the summer but still allows for ventilation, a blackout curtain, and other fabrics with blue and green colors which allow sunlight to shine through them to create an interesting interior effect. | The Southernmost space can be used as a grass playing field or a parking lot through the use of reinforced pavers underneath the grass which preserve it after functioning as a parking lot. | The entire project is based off of a grid system the defines where each element would be placed. These grids all meet one another at the community center. This even defines where poles can be placed in the Southermost area to create enclosed spaces for events.

| The Idea Factory explores the creative journey an idea takes from just a simple thought to something tangible. It takes that process and relates it to architectural space.

| Firstly, the building is divided into two main areas. The bottom space houses the lobby, gallery, and office spaces. These spaces are reflected in the facade as a clean, polished mass with flowing curves and straight lines. In addition, the gallery spaces are very plain in order to emphasize the art displayed in the space. Speaking of the art, minimal light is allowed to enter the gallery space in order to prevent damage to the art and minimize glare. On the contrary, the upper space houses the studio areas. These spaces are very multi-functional, have plenty of light, and are represented on the facade with a chaotic, messy, and almost unfinished program. The facade even represents (in a geometric way) the swirling lines of a brain, the birthplace of ideas.

| For each of the two main spaces, as you travel higher the privacy increases. The lobby is below

the public gallery and the public gallery is below the private gallery. The studio lobby is below the public studio, and the public studio is below the private studios.

| There are also many instances of “overflow,” first from the studio space over into the hallway of the private gallery and second from the catwalk looking down into the studio space. Not to mention, there is an oculus which is used as a spiral staircase functioning as the primary method of circulating throughout the space. Lastly, the building sports a cantilevered area that allows pedestrians to explore the space hidden between the context buildings.

| Another huge focus of architecture is how the building can cooperate with the climate of its location.

This project was optimized to control the amount of natural light that penetrates the facade and to regulate the building’s temperature December 21 (Winter)

| These diagrams above display the angle of the sun on the Summer and Winter equinoxes in Syracuse, NY. The rays of the sun in the summer are much more vertical because the sun has a greater altitude. On the contrary, the sun is much lower in the winter months. Lips around the windows in the gallery spaces prevent most of the hot, summer sun from entering the building while still allowing the winter sun to have plenty of access to the interior. This aids in passively heating the building in the winter which can cut down on active heating costs.

| This sun path diagram shows the altitude and azimuth of the path that the sun travels throughout the day on June 21st and December 21st.

| The very thick walls of the gallery spaces are useful in storing heat during the cold, winter months in Syracuse.

Additionally, the upper studio spaces have windows that can be opened to adjust the interior temperature to the occupants liking. Altogether, these features will cut down on active cooling and heating costs while also preserving the local environment from toxins these systems release.

| Wind and air circulation is another key factor that can optimize passive cooling and cut down on energy costs.

There needs to be some way for air to enter, circulate throughout the building in some way, then exit. In the Idea Factory, this circulation takes place when air enters from the South facade, flows through the building, and exits through the West facade or skylights on the top floor.

| The structural system of the upper studio spaces in the Idea Factory focus on skeleton construction. Three different networks of columns and beams with cascading thicknesses work in unison to support the floor slabs.

These allow the South and West facade to be completely made of glass and opaque panels. These columns and beams are made of steel which allows them to remain firm under stress. Not to mention, the supporting walls work in conjunction with the columns to support the concrete floor slabs.

| The structural system of the lower gallery spaces utilizes a more solid construction method. Firstly, the very thick walls are able to almost fully support the concrete floor slabs by distributing the weight into the ground; however, supporting walls (including the spiral staircase) are used as extra supports for the floor slabs. Also portrayed in this diagram is non-structural glass used in the structure bottom portion.

| This facade acts as a link between its neighboring buildings by drawing heavy influence from its context. Various elements in the windows are used to connect the horizontal lines from each of the adjacent buildings.

The arches and pillars are borrowed from the building to the right while the simplistic geometries and windows are borrowed from the building to the left.

| The facade of this building is also inspired by Casa Del Fascio in Como, Italy. The grid system used in Casa Del Fascio is adopted into this design, defining the entire program.

Lastly, the fake balconies of Casa Del Fascio are mimicked on the top floor of this facade.

014_NURSING_GROWTH

| The abandoned 416 West Onondaga St. building has become a crumbling wasteland but provides an opportunity for rebirth in the community. This proposed renovation of the building creates a fresh, inviting, and usable space for the community to enjoy while still preserving some elements of the structure and facade. | This is achieved through emphasizing the enduring, non decaying, and rooted nature of the brick wall on the Southwest facade. This is done by removing the floor plates around the brick wall to transform it into a freestanding mass and adding vines to create a moment inspired by a low tech fruit wall. The circulation of the building wraps around this brick wall forcing patrons to weave in and out of the wall as they ascend or descend onto other floors.

Lastly, a skylight was added to allow crucial sunlight to hit the foliage that will eventually conquer the wall.

| Nature inside of the building promotes interaction with its occupants by acting as a divider of space while nature on the outside of the building defines circulation paths. Lastly, the atrium space (inspired by the Palm House) in the front of the building allows the occupants to feel closer to nature and almost as if they never entered an enclosed space. This void condition is also present in the completely open second floor and the open “hallway” space inbetween the brick wall and the enclosed space. The circulation celebrates this open space by wrapping around it. | The three floors are split into 3 different programs: shared community space, adult space and childcare space.

The separation between the childcare and office (adult) space is emphasized through the floor hatches, but these spaces can in fact overlap on the second floor. This large, open space can be split or joined through the use of a curtain. This function of separating space with a curtain is present on the other two floors which allow the office and childcare space to be split up into separate rooms or joined to create a singular space.
