HEALTHY COMMUNITIES

COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS EXPAND ACCESS TO CARE Atrium Health Community-Based Virtual Care Atrium Health Community-Based Virtual Care is connecting residents in vulnerable neighborhoods to primary and pediatric care by partnering with community organizations like schools, YMCAs, camps, faith communities, and

Levine Cancer Institute Community Screenings Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute’s Disparities & Outreach program is eliminating barriers to care by bringing cancer screenings to rural and underserved populations across

other community meeting points across the Charlotte region. The innovative program, which utilizes special technology to link patients to a remotely located Atrium Health physician or advanced practice provider, received support from Kohl's Cares, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of

North Carolina, Corning Foundation, and the Ann P. Miller Charitable Trust.

the Carolinas. Through charitable support, Levine Cancer Institute conducts free screenings for some of the most common cancers, including breast, colorectal, head and neck, lung, prostate, and skin cancer. Screenings are critical to detecting cancer when it

is most treatable. In addition to providing free screenings for uninsured and underinsured members of the community, Levine Cancer Institute experts provide important health education and, if cancer is detected, navigation through treatment.

Levine Cancer Institute: Project PINK and Project PINK Plus are increasing access to life-saving mammograms for residents of Mecklenburg and surrounding counties. In partnership with Charlotte Radiology, the program’s state-of-the-art mobile breast center travels throughout the community offering free screenings, breast health education, and additional diagnostic care. Support from the community – including donations from the Charlotte Knights, Brasfield & Gorrie, North Carolina Adult Soccer Association, Coca-Cola Consolidated, and many others – funded 16 community screenings in 2021, providing breast cancer care for those in greatest need.

Levine Cancer Institute Lung B.A.S.E.S. (Bringing Awareness, Screening & Education to improve Survivorship) 4 Life links rural populations to free lung cancer screenings, education, and support resources. The program, the first of its kind in the nation, utilizes state-of-the-art mobile lung units equipped with CT scanners. To address the growing demand for screenings in highrisk and underserved communities, Lung B.A.S.E.S. 4 Life held its first event in South Carolina in 2021. Initial leading support from The Leon Levine Foundation and Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation helped launch the program in 2017. Now continued philanthropic commitments from organizations, including the Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina, will expand this vital program into communities across the Carolinas.

HEALTHCARE INNOVATIONS STRENGTHEN COVID-19 RESPONSE Atrium Health Hospital at Home A program created at the beginning of the pandemic, Atrium Health Hospital at Home provides care for patients with COVID-19 in the safety and comfort of

their homes. By using virtual, paramedicine, and telemedicine resources, healthcare workers have provided patient-centered care while reducing unnecessary inpatient admissions. As part of a $749,000 grant awarded by The Duke Endowment, Atrium Health is among the first in the nation to provide a roadmap for advancing Hospital at Home as a sustainable, value-focused standard of care for patient services.

Virtual Behavioral Health As the most comprehensive behavioral healthcare provider in the region, Atrium Health has remained committed to addressing patient health and well-being throughout the pandemic, including expanding teletherapy services and integrating virtual behavioral healthcare into primary care. With a $250,000 grant from The Duke Endowment, Atrium Health is reducing barriers to behavioral health services for children and adolescents. The program aims to improve healthcare navigation and strengthen the continuum of care for school-age children by providing virtual care and support between traditional visits with care providers.

PHILANTHROPIC COMMITMENTS LAUNCH NEW COMMUNITY PROGRAMS Mobile Primary Care With a $1.2 million gift from The Tepper Foundation, Atrium Health has established a new mobile primary care program to address barriers to care in underprivileged communities. It is the first transformational gift to the innovative program, with funds supporting staffing and infrastructure. The contribution arose in part from Atrium Health’s demonstrable success in launching the enterprise’s COVID-19 mobile testing and vaccination programs, which reached thousands

of underserved patients who formerly had limited access to care. Considering social and environmental factors that impact health outcomes, The Tepper Foundation’s gift will also advance Atrium Health’s efforts to address underlying needs of patients living in healthcare deserts. With this support, Atrium Health will extend social service resources to homes and communities where patients reside.

Drive to Thrive As Atrium Health continues to prioritize health equity in Charlotte and surrounding regions, leaders of Atrium Health Women’s Care aim to reach women in every corner of the community with affordable medical care and reproductive education. Established with a $500,000 gift from benefactors Todd and Barbara Kopczynski, the Drive to Thrive outreach program and mobile medical unit will soon begin serving West Charlotte, and surrounding communities, where residents have limited access to reproductive, maternal, and prenatal care. This image is a conceptual rendering and is proposed for illustrative purposes only.

OUTSTANDING EDUCATION

NEW MEDICAL SCHOOL: A BEACON OF HOPE FOR CHARLOTTE REGION

A

fter announcing the strategic combination of Atrium Health and Wake Forest Baptist Health in 2020, Atrium Health has embarked on a journey to redefine how care is delivered throughout North Carolina and beyond. In March 2021, the health system announced a 20-acre site in midtown Charlotte as the future home of the second campus of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. The two medical school campuses in Winston-Salem and Charlotte will create a new, preeminent regional corridor for health technology and innovation.

Brilliant minds are coming together to advance life-changing care, and community leaders have stepped forward to help usher in a new era of healthcare. In December 2021, Atrium Health Foundation announced a $25 million gift from the Howard R. Levine Foundation to name the signature academic building. The Howard R. Levine Center for Education will house the school of medicine, as well as Wake Forest University School of Business, Wake Forest School for Professional Studies, and Carolinas College of Health Sciences.

Howard R. Levine

The $25 million donation from the Howard R. Levine Foundation is the first major gift tied to the new school of medicine and its campus.

The two campuses of the Wake Forest School of Medicine will create a next-generation, academic learning health system featuring: • One of the most diverse learning bodies in the country – producing a generation of medical professionals representative of the communities we serve. • A new, preeminent regional corridor for health technology and innovation that will focus on improving health by bringing new medicines and treatments to patients and advancing economic equity. • Expanded research capabilities across a large, diverse market to drive discoveries that improve the health of our patients and communities.

ENDOWMENT HONORS COMMUNITY HERO As part of the Giving Hope campaign, Atrium Health established the Bishop George E. Battle Jr. Scholarship Endowment to honor Bishop Battle’s longstanding service to Charlotte and support the continuing education of those living in underserved communities. Through initial seeding from Atrium Health, the endowment will benefit those pursuing a degree in health sciences at an Atrium Healthaffiliated college or university, including Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Carolinas College of Health Sciences, and Cabarrus College of

Health Sciences. Atrium Health Foundation has engaged the community to match Atrium Health’s initial commitment to create a $10 million fund by the time the first students are seated at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine Charlotte campus in 2024. The endowment has since received overwhelming support from hundreds of donors and community leaders, including leading support from Margaret & Smoky Bissell and Andy & Mac Everett.

An emeritus member of the Atrium Health Board of Commissioners and the Atrium Health Foundation Board of Directors, Bishop Battle is a lifelong advocate for at-risk youth and those economically disadvantaged.

PREEMINENT RESEARCH CLINICAL TRIAL PROVIDES HOPE FOR PATIENTS WITH RARE CHILDHOOD CANCERS In December 2021, Atrium Health Levine Children’s enrolled its first patient in an innovative pediatric oncology clinical trial. The trial, intended for patients with rare childhood cancers – including diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) and recurrent neuroblastoma – tests an innovative combination of molecular-guided therapy and personalized immunotherapy. The treatments use the unique genetic information of an

individual child’s cancer to design the approach to care. The clinical trial has received leading support from Caroline’s PEACH Foundation and Beat Childhood Cancer Foundation. Additional funding has been provided by the Isabella Santos Foundation, Milan’s Miracle Fund, Brooke’s Blossoming Hope for Childhood Cancer Foundation, Alex Mandarino Foundation, and the Heineman-Robicsek Foundation.

Dr. Giselle Sholler

The clinical trial is headed by Dr. Giselle Saulnier Sholler, chair of the Beat Childhood Cancer Research Consortium and director of the Isabella Santos Foundation Rare & Solid Tumor Program at Atrium Health Levine Children’s; and Dr. Duane Mitchell, co-director of the Preston A. Wells Jr. Center for Brain Tumor Therapy at the University of Florida.

POTENTIAL TREATMENT FOR ONE FORM OF MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY DISCOVERED AT ATRIUM HEALTH In September 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave “fast track” designation to investigate a potential new treatment for limb-girdle muscular dystrophy type 2i (LGMD2i), that originated in Atrium Health’s McColl-Lockwood Laboratory for Muscular Dystrophy Research. The therapy, BBP-418, provides a novel approach that targets the rare disease at its source. Generally diagnosed in young people ages 5 to 20 years old,

LGMD2i produces a slowprogressing muscle weakness that leads to loss of mobility and, in some cases, cardiac and respiratory failure. Biotech companies and startups like BridgeBio and ML Bios Solutions – coupled with philanthropic support from the McColl and Lockwood families, Muscular Dystrophy Association, and other community supporters – are driving the success of the McColl-Lockwood Lab.

Dr. Qi Long Lu, director of the McColl-Lockwood Lab at Atrium Health and scientific co-founder of ML Bio Solutions, initially developed the potential treatment for limb-girdle muscular dystrophy. He presented his research at the prestigious Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Virtual Clinical & Scientific Conference in March 2021.

PROMISING THERAPY REVOLUTIONIZES CANCER TREATMENT Every day, physician leaders at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute are making lifechanging discoveries in the early detection and treatment of cancer. Notably, advances in CAR T-cell therapy are providing hope for patients diagnosed with cancers considered untreatable, particularly lymphoma. A type of immunotherapy that supercharges blood cells to fight cancer, CAR T-cell therapy has proven effective in patients who have not responded

favorably to traditional chemotherapy. Levine Cancer Institute is one of the first cancer care centers nationwide offering this treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma and other cancers. These developments in cancer treatment are made possible through philanthropy, including a $1 million gift from Jan and Ed Brown III. The transformational gift will help to shape the trajectory of cancer care at Levine Cancer Institute for years to come.

DISTINGUISHED CHAIR ESTABLISHED TO ADVANCE IMMUNO-ONCOLOGY PROGRAM A new era in personalized therapies for cancer is being launched with a $1 million gift from the Gayle J. and Charles C. Tallardy III Foundation to establish an endowment at Levine Cancer Institute. The endowment will provide funding to advance research at Levine Cancer Institute, including strategic investments in clinical trials and supportive oncology studies for immunotherapy, as well as studies of molecular prediction and prognostication. David M. Foureau, PhD, associate professor of medicine and research group director of LCI’s Immune Monitoring Core Laboratory, is the first recipient of the Gayle J. and Charles C. Tallardy III Foundation Distinguished Chair in Clinical Research.

Immunotherapy, a form of biological therapy that uses a person’s own immune system to fight cancer, allows researchers to create personalized therapies to better target the disease. < David M. Foureau, PhD

TRANSFORMATIONAL GIFT SETS PACE FOR CAROLINAS REHABILITATION’S NEW FLAGSHIP FACILITY

David Conlan

A

$30 million gift from Margaret & Smoky Bissell and Bissell Ballantyne & Annette Siverling will name the David L. Conlan Center at the new Atrium Health Carolinas Rehabilitation, slated to open in late 2022. The gift honors the late David Conlan – a longtime friend, colleague, and trusted advisor of Smoky Bissell – who passed away in August 2021. The David L. Conlan Center will anchor Carolinas Rehabilitation’s new flagship facility that will replace the current building constructed in the 1970s. Upon completion, the 150,000-square-foot specialized hospital will feature 70 private patient rooms, a 9,300-square-foot outpatient clinic, an outdoor therapy garden, an aquatic therapy program, and a center for independent living to help patients relearn activities for daily life. In addition to naming the David L. Conlan Center, the Bissell gift will be used to advance the reach, geography, and efficacy of rehabilitation services and programs offered by Carolinas Rehabilitation, which is nationally recognized by the American Hospital Association for its commitment to quality care.

LEVINE CHILDREN'S MEDICAL PLAZA WILL MARK NEW CHAPTER IN CHILDREN’S HEALTHCARE The Levine Children’s Medical Plaza is undergoing a complete renovation, projected for completion in 2025. The outpatient center will offer efficient, coordinated care and a support system for patient families. Several transformational gifts made in 2021 have supported the facility. A $1 million gift from Reneé and Dewey Jenkins will name the Reneé and Dewey Jenkins Conference Center, which will serve as an essential communications hub and gathering place for small and large groups of visitors, hospital staff, and patients. A $1 million gift from the Charlotte-based WARD’s Foundation will establish the Ward Winslett Center for Pediatric Rare Disease. The Center will provide patients with access to an array of services under one roof, ensuring that families spend less time traveling and in appointments, and more quality time with their children. Thanks to overwhelming community support received in 2021, along with the continued generosity of benefactors like Greg and Kara Olsen, Bevie Hemby, and many others, Levine Children’s will continue to transform pediatric specialty care in the Charlotte region.

KENILWORTH MEDICAL PLAZA OPENS, INCREASING ACCESS TO HEART CARE As part of its commitment to transform healthcare within the Charlotte region, Atrium Health opened Kenilworth Medical Plaza I and II in April 2021. The 400,000-square-foot plaza provides access to outpatient care across the medical spectrum, including Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, Atrium Health Neurosciences Institute, Atrium Health Pharmacy, Atrium Health Perspective Health & Wellness, gastroenterology, infectious disease, palliative care, pulmonology, and urology. Kenilworth Medical Plaza I now serves as the flagship location for Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, providing many of its outpatient services under one roof. The new facility offers comprehensive, patient-centered cardiovascular care,

for all. With the expansion of Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, patients have unprecedented access to clinical care and patient programs recognized by industry experts to be among the best of the best, including a state-of-the-art cardiac rehabilitation suite, advanced imaging technologies and clinical research, leading surgical techniques, and a vast range of sub-specialty cardiovascular services.

Several contributions in 2021 provided key support for the facility, helping to shape heart care in Charlotte: A $2.5 million gift from Margaret and Smoky Bissell established a new endowed chair at Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute. The contribution, made in honor of Sanger president Dr. Geoffrey A. Rose, will bolster research, educational opportunities, and special projects related to cardiovascular medicine. A $2 million gift from the William, Jeff and Jennifer Gross Family Foundation is supporting the Center for Cardiovascular Care Transformation, housed in the new Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute. The Center serves as the catalyst for innovation in education, research, and clinical care pathways necessary to support foundational change in the delivery of cardiovascular care. A $1 million gift from The Leon Levine Foundation has named the Sandra & Leon Levine Auditorium at Kenilworth. The 150-seat, state-of the-art auditorium will provide

enhanced opportunities for medical professionals to receive continuing cardiovascular education. A $500,000 gift from Charlie and Kathy Izard, coupled with a $1.5 million commitment through a planned gift, established the Izard Family Fund for Excellence in Women’s Cardiovascular Care and the Izard Family Distinguished Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine. Funding will support Sanger's recruitment of industry experts to address women’s cardiovascular health. A $500,000 gift from Sarah and Tim Belk, Jr. has named the Sarah & Tim Belk Community Kitchen. The demonstration kitchen features expansive cooking and instructional space, allowing for a hands-on approach to heart-healthy eating. Chefs will showcase culturally relevant and heart healthy recipes to help patients better manage their chronic disease.

Since first opening as an urgent care facility in 1987, Atrium Health Pineville has experienced exponential growth. The grand opening of the hospital’s Palmetto Bed Tower in December 2021 has increased the hospital’s capacity from 262 licensed beds to 307, improving access to care for patients in the South Charlotte region. Philanthropy continues to shape its growth and recognition as one of the top hospitals in the region.

Atrium Health Union West put the finishing touches on its flagship, 150,000-square-foot facility, which will expand care to the growing population in western Union County. The state-of-the-art campus includes an acute care hospital, emergency department, and specialty care center in one convenient location.
