IMPACT OF YOUR GIVING

in support of the Sandra Levine Young Women’s Breast Cancer Program

presented with gratitude to The Leon Levine Foundation

The Sandra Levine Young Women’s Breast Cancer Program (YWBP)

A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming at any age. However, young women often face unique medical and emotional challenges that differ from those experienced by older patients. They may be navigating concerns such as fertility, educational plans, early career development, interpersonal relationships, intimacy, parenting responsibilities, and body image.

To address the specific needs of this population, the Sandra Levine Young Women's Breast Cancer Fund was established at Atrium Health Foundation in 2017, thanks to a generous gift from The Leon Levine Foundation.

The Sandra Levine Young Women’s Breast Cancer Program began enrolling patients in January 2018. Currently, only a limited number of breast cancer programs nationwide are dedicated exclusively to young women.

We believe in the power of shared experience and informed decision-making. Through personalized support and education, we empower patients and their care partners to better understand the diagnosis, explore treatment options, and manage the physical and emotional effects of care.

Clinical Trials Enrolling Patients

1. Self-Reported Pain and Nadir White Blood Cell/Absolute Neutrophil Count in Women under 45 Compared to Older Women Receiving Pegfilgrastim (or biosimilar substitution) While Undergoing Chemotherapy for NonMetastatic Breast Cancer (Investigator Initiated Research (IIR) – Julie Fisher, MD)

• Objective: to investigate whether younger patients report pegfilgrastim-induced pain with greater frequency than older patients.

• Protocol development began March 2018; First patient enrolled January 2020.

2. High Dose Vitamin D to Improve Bone Health in Young Women with Localized Breast Cancer (Investigator Initiated Research (IIR) – Arielle Heeke, MD)

• Objective: to compare the effect of high dose Vitamin D to the current standard Vitamin D treatment on bone health in young women with non-metastatic breast cancer.

• Protocol development May 2018.

3. Young Women with Breast Cancer: Treatment Quality and Metrics, YWBP Survey Project (Lejla HadzikadicGusic, MD, MSc, FACS, FSSO)

• Survey project through REDCap; IRB approved.

• Hypothesis: We propose that the creation of a dedicated young women’s program in breast cancer will help to ensure that patients are offered the most advanced multidisciplinary approach to the standard of care treatment options and will help to provide them social support networks dedicated to women in their age group.

• Submitted abstract to American College of Surgeons NC/SC Chapter, early2025, pending acceptance.

Clinical Trials Enrolling Patients

4. An Investigation of Demographics and Trends in Breast Cancer Patients Aged 45 and Under at AHLCI, YWBP Database

• Project (Lejla Hadzikadic-Gusic, MD, MSc, FACS, FSSO)

• Objectives: To summarize clinical characteristics of breast cancer patients 40 and under and to identify differences between young breast cancer patients and the general breast cancer patient population.

• IRB approval: February 2018.

• 105 data points collected per patient.

• The YWBP database contains approximately 1,500 cases from 2010 to April 2025.

• The program maintains a YWBP research database to support ongoing analysis, including preparation for evaluating five-year recurrence and overall survival outcomes.

Ongoing and Future Program Development

The Sandra Levine Young Women's Breast Cancer Program is continually evolving to meet the needs of the 18-45 patient population served by Atrium Health. Current initiatives—spanning local, regional, and national levels—focus on expanding access to specialized resources, enhancing survivorship care, and advancing research that addresses the unique challenges faced by young women with breast cancer. These efforts reflect a commitment to innovation, collaboration, and equity in care delivery.

Local Initiatives

• Dr. Hadzikadic-Gusic and Dr. Fisher serve as representatives on the Atrium Health Levine Cancer Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Oncology Steering Committee in Charlotte. This multidisciplinary committee guides the development and implementation of the AYA Program, which supports cancer patients aged 15 to 39 at Atrium Health locations throughout the Southeast.

• In collaboration with the AYA Program and the Department of Supportive Oncology, the Young Women’s Breast Cancer Program is working to enhance the quality of care and expand access to comprehensive services. These efforts aim to ensure that all adolescent and young adult patients benefit from a coordinated, patient-centered approach to cancer treatment and survivorship.

Hold

Regional Initiatives: Southeast and Midwest

• In 2024, the Young Women’s Breast Cancer Program expanded to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center (AH WFB CCC) through a referral process (with hopes to incorporate into the patient's chart in EPIC). This ongoing expansion is ongoing and continues to build regional capacity for specialized resources.

• In 2025, discussions are underway to extend the program to the Advocate Health Midwest Region, based in Chicago, Illinois. This initiative represents a strategic effort to broaden the program’s reach and impact across Advocate Health’s regional footprint.

National Initiatives

To advance the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of breast cancer in young women, the program has proposed the establishment of a National Consortium of Young Women with Breast Cancer at Atrium Health Levine Cancer.

This visionary initiative aims to:

• Establish a collaborative network of clinicians, researchers, and institutions dedicated to improving outcomes for young women with breast cancer.

• Advocate for and enable the meaningful inclusion of young women in breast cancer research.

• Host a centralized national database to support data sharing and large-scale analysis.

• Conduct multi-institutional clinical studies focused on the unique biology and psychosocial needs of young patients.

• Develop evidence-based guidelines and best practices for care delivery.

The proposal is currently in development in partnership with the research team, clinical trials office, and legal department.
