obvious when only two bar seats were available so close together that knees would be touching, and as I stammered through ordering in (very broken) French, a friendly elderly man sat down next to me. Now in most cases, facing a major language barrier makes my heart race, though with my new friend Jean-Claude, what was supposed to be an expedited lunch turned into two hours of leisurely connection—of course, with help from Google Translate.

This encounter reminded me how fast we operate in life—especially in the city—and how easily I could’ve missed a now-cherished memory. Though a visit to Paris certainly isn’t required for this life reminder, it is encouragement to slow down and embrace first-hand experiences again—sans cellphone, preferably.

DESIGNER AND HUFF HARRINGTON co-founder Ann Huff has been in a yearslong love affair. And while her 36-year marriage with husband Bill stands strong, it’s a city—one with vibrant art and culture, a romantic spirit, and sophisticated soul—that’s stolen her heart.

Since 2010, Ann has visited Paris countless times to purchase art and antiques for her beloved Atlanta-based showroom, and also to work on design projects for foreigners purchasing Parisian apartments. It wasn’t until the pandemic prevented her from returning that she realized the market potential for Huff Harrington in France, so in 2021, the Huffs permanently moved across the pond to launch the European arm of the business.

Having lived in an array of apartments throughout the last decade offered full retrospect of what the couple’s needs were for a long-term home, and after a trial run in a different apartment fell through, a swift, aggressive search for a new place to live led the Huffs to an unexpected jewel. “I distinctly remember saying to my husband as we visited the apartment, ‘We have to like this one, it’s our only choice,’” says Ann. “And to our surprise, we actually did.”

Bemelmans’ Madeline brought to life. Birds chirp in the morning, the streets are quiet, the neighbors are friendly. Soon after moving in, the Huffs discovered the apartment above them—one with endless streams of sunlight, a wraparound balcony, and front-row views of the Eiffel Tower—was coming up for sale, and after placing a note under the door sharing their interest, Ann soon found herself becoming her own client.

At around 1,000 square feet, the apartment’s charm was undeniable, though poor insulation and an awkward layout required a full-gut renovation to bring it up to more livable standards. The removal of a large entry hallway allowed cramped bathrooms to be expanded, and the separate kitchen moved to the main living area, where sumptuous furniture and story-filled antiques invite guests to linger.

Hidden doors matching the new molding or built into kitchen cabinetry reveal the home’s private spaces, including Ann’s office— her favorite room in the entire apartment. With an arched niche that surrounds her desk and a dramatic 1820s painting depicting a Swedish sailboat on the Italian coast, creativity flows freely in the quaint space.

Arches, most prominently housing the kitchen’s range and backsplash, call to the curves in the base of the Eiffel Tower (seen from six different windows in the apartment) as well as in surrounding buildings that dot the neighborhood. And as a passionate Francophile, Ann displays rare antiques, flea market finds, and rotating art in a museum-like, albeit inviting, way. “Mixing modern art with traditional 18th- or 19th-century art is my idea of happiness,” says Huff. “It gives a room soul, it gives it energy, it makes it interesting.”

Nearby, the modest bedroom boasts an original fireplace with marble mantel and a built-in wall of closets. “I’ve always felt you don’t need a big bedroom, just plenty of storage, nice lighting, a side table, and a really great, comfortable bed,” says Ann. “We mirrored 13

Special design finds are tastefully placed throughout the home, including a rare Pauly Murano glass chandelier over a Biedermeierstyle burled walnut dining table sourced from Prague, antique Louis Philippe door hardware with beading that calls to the main living area’s oversize mirror, and dazzling crystal light fixtures in Ann’s office and the bedroom.

And as the Huffs sit in their home each evening sipping a nightcap and enjoying the sparkling Eiffel Tower, the pair feel as though they’ve found their missing puzzle piece in this home. Says Ann, “I’ve lived in many other apartments—some that were much bigger or that may be considered more luxurious—but this apartment just feels so good that I never want to leave. 30A If school’s out, Atlantans are swarming 30A. For those not familiar, 30A refers to Scenic Highway 30A, a lovely stretch of road along the Emerald Coast in the Florida Panhandle, running for about 24 miles through 16 picturesque coastal towns in South Walton County between Destin and Panama City Beach. Seaside is arguably the most famous on 30A— the master-planned community was built in the 1980s, was the setting for The Truman Show in the late ’90s, and inspired the founding of future regional communities including Alys Beach, WaterColor, and Rosemary Beach.

While all the beach towns have their own architectural style and vibe, the common threads are the sugar-white sand beaches, emerald green waters, and new urbanist elements including walking and bike paths and intentional planning to foster a sense of community. Clocking just under six hours to make the drive, the area has long been a favored destination for Atlanta families, and Atlantans have historically made up a large percentage of the secondary homeowners in 30A. The region’s real estate market has experienced significant changes in recent years, with continued appreciation of property values and a strong demand for vacation rentals. “Healthy market” is perhaps an understatement.

30A was mostly sleepy until the 1980s—even during Florida’s tourism boom in the ’50s and ’60s—with all the action localized to Destin and Panama City Beach. But the literal and figurative groundbreaking event for the region was Andres Duany’s charette in 1980: Robert and Daryl Davis inherited 80 acres of beachfront land from Robert’s grandfather, and while they wanted to develop it, they didn’t want a typical suburb, but something more like Key West or Charleston, South Carolina. So they hired famed DPZ firm and the legendary Duany to come up from Miami and create a plan. The charette defined the vision for Seaside, which became a model for New Urbanism and influenced city planning worldwide, proving that traditional town planning could work in a modern context, and showed that good urban design can shape social interactions and quality of life.

Naomi Von Habersham OWNING A SECOND home used to be uncommon.

Owning a nicely furnished one was even rarer. It’s hard to believe now, but once upon a time, spending anything more than a pittance on a second home’s decor was considered profligate. Instead, most people furnished their vacation homes with castoffs from their primary houses or hand-me-downs from family, because the good stuff was almost always reserved for one’s main residence. This was especially true for beach houses, which often ended up with the dregs of home furnishings. Back in the 1970s and ’80s, you would have been hard-pressed to find luxurious linens in beach houses, even those on tiny Sea Island. Most of the time, it was a hodgepodge of threadbare towels in random colors and polyester-blend sheets from a discount store. Vacation-home kitchens were similarly wanting.

There was no copper cookware or Le Creuset. If you were lucky, you had old Revere Ware. I think I speak for most of us when I say, thank goodness that’s all in the past. Beach house interiors are no longer the afterthought they once were. Today, they are rightfully treated as opportunities to indulge in a whole host of coastal-inspired decorations that enhance one’s relaxation, like rattan and wicker furniture, easy, breezy cotton fabrics, and lively colors that spark joy. Meanwhile, up in the North Georgia and North Carolina mountains, getaway homes there are being equally well-cared-for, usually with comfortable furnishings that reflect the area’s woodsy landscape. Think woolen fabrics in the winter, cotton and linen for summer, country antiques, and a year-round natural color palette of greens, browns, and creams. And unlike the mishmash decor of yesteryear, the typical vacation house now has cohesive-looking interiors with furnishings that were actually selected to go together. Spending time at our lake, mountain, or beach houses no longer means roughing it with meager design or, heaven forbid, inferior towels and bedding. People now see second homes for what they should have been in the first place: a home away from home that deserves getting the good stuff too.

Ponce City Market’s new tapas concept brings heat to Midtown, providing an authentic Spanish experience.

No stranger to the Atlanta area with multiple local eateries to line his resume, including El Super Pan which resides across from La Metro in the main atrium of Ponce City Market, chef proprietor Hector Santiago knew what Atlanta was missing and filled an untapped market. “I really want to stay true to Spanish tapas bars and that kind of communal hanging out,” says Santiago, inspired by his many trips abroad.

Named after a landmark building and community hub in Madrid, the restaurant evokes a similar feeling. “My favorite building, the Metropolis, has a lot of character, strength, and finesse,” says Santiago. “And being in Ponce City Market is like being in the middle of town at the Metropolis.” Although Atlanta is a newer city 30

in comparison, Ponce City Market holds a long history and is a historic preservation success story, as is true of many Spanish buildings.

“It shows Spain—it doesn’t show us,” says Santiago of the interiors. “That’s the goal with everything and how we wanted the place to look.” Colored glass windows and tile transport guests to the vibrant streets of Spain. The bar seating evokes a metropolitan feeling where strangers do not exist and community is found at bustling tapas bars. Nearby gallery walls are composed of dancers, matadors, and the balance of Spanish culture where both softness and strength, something light and something bold coexist.

These opposing forces are evident in the menu where quick counter-service bites shine as bright as the 500-day-aged ham.

“I tried to keep it all very authentic,” says Santiago. A Spanish staple, the Shrimp al

Shrimp al Ajillo is cooked in olive oil, giving it a sweetness, while chilies add spice. Santiago notes that Puerto Rico has their own version of this dish—shrimp and garlic—which was a favorite of his when growing up there.

Authentic eats continue with an array of tasty tapas including the Patatas Bravas. Fresh from the fryer, crispy potatoes are paired with Spanish hot sauce, and aioli balances the flavors. “It’s delicious and different from every other hot sauce you know with just enough spice to have you craving more,” says Santiago.

Despite the speedy service, dishes are never rushed. The aging process for the goat’s milk in the Caña de Cabra is over three months long.

Add a little sweetness with decadent dessert selections. Guests can opt for an authentic offering like the Crema Catalana Espuma, Spanish custard foam with burnt sugar, or stay tried-and-true with the ever-popular churros and chocolate. Just as indulgent, the drink menu is dotted with cava, vermouth, beer, and Spanish wines, as well as creative cocktails— like the Golden Martini with gin and vermouth.

“Every time I have it, it tastes like a sunny day in Madrid,” says Santiago. Also on the can’tmiss list, the Adonis cocktail with vermouth, amontillado sherry, and orange bitters is full of flavor.

New Heights

The gateway to the outdoors, the grand salon is the perfect space to showcase the home’s arched detailings and wooden beams.

FRONTING THE MARSH of Georgia’s famed coastal destination Sea Island, a newly built Mediterranean-style home is a case study in artful architecture and high-style design—and is now a covetable retreat for an Atlanta couple and their extended family. Architect Josh Youngner, who worked off a schematic design by original architect Thomas Thaddeus Truett, and interior designer Courtney Decker created a home that highlights the incredible marsh views and grand architectural gestures in nearly every room. “They wanted a relaxed, comfortable space where they could entertain friends and their large, extended family,” says Decker, who established abundant entertaining spaces, dashed communal rooms with performance fabrics, and sprinkled guest bedrooms with fun patterns and coastal hues.

While newly constructed by builder Van Waters, the character-rich, brick home with a two-piece barrel roof feels as if it’s always been there. “The vision from the beginning was to paint the brick, and we gave it just the right opaque sheen to make it look older,” says Youngner, adding that they used a heavy mud set barrel tile on the roof for an authentic look and even boosted tiles to mimic past repairs.

The entryway gallery begs a long pause: Crisp plastered walls point attention to a groin vault ceiling with arches on repeat, and light-washed patterned terracotta floors defy the traditional orange palette. “We wanted a clean and open 63

feeling, so when you walk in, you notice the vault ceiling and the spectacular views of the marsh,” says Decker.

Youngner fashioned the striking iron-rail staircase, which he says took numerous mock-ups to accomplish the curved corner that vanishes into a straight edge.

But it’s the staircase’s patterned tile risers that deliver a foretaste of the home’s biggest design stars: “It’s the tile work, that’s where much of the design started,” reveals Decker. “The patterned tiles throughout the home add unexpected punches, yet they’re elegant.” Standouts include a colorful star-dotted tile that wraps the formal powder room and a Deco-style tile—located in the arched bar niche—that further enhances the space’s architectural intrigue.

living space, which Decker fitted with a large dining table suitable for 10 and plenty of conversation seating for guests to socialize while gazing at the marsh. Though, it’s tempting to stare at details such as stained wooden beams and black iron chandeliers that offer interesting contrast to the white, smoothly plastered fireplace.

Decker dotes on the blended kitchen, breakfast room, and family room, where a stunning matte black French range and an off-black kitchen island add sophistication and stark contrast to the light cabinetry.

The high-design scullery serves as an overflow kitchen and makes entertaining a breeze.

And with expansive outdoor areas, including a porch and pool set against a scenic marsh backdrop, the gracious home reminds why Sea Island remains a prized place to live and play.

TWO DECADES AGO, designer Carolyn Kendall of Alcott Interiors and architect Van Pond Jr. of Van Pond Architect joined forces to create their clients’ Nashville home. It made sense, then, for the pair to come together 20 years later to create the family’s ultimate country retreat. This time around, the style directive was different: Eschew any formal leanings and create a fresh take on a camp.

The goal, says Pond, was “for the house to feel like it had been a cottage and added on to over the years.” So, Pond and Charles Richardson of Treetop Builders created a rambling Arts and Crafts-inspired home—or as Pond calls it, “a generational farmhouse”—centered around the kitchen, dining, and living room. Tennessee limestone and Douglas fir set the rustic tone, but that doesn’t mean dark and gloomy. “We went lighter with the wood’s color,” notes Kendall. “It’s more sophisticated.”

Kendall’s philosophy is that every space in a home can be unique, but there has to be a common thread. In this case, it was all about the surroundings. “Large windows create a brightness,” she says. “Views of nature are everywhere.”

Shades of green are found on the dining chairs and the living room’s swivel chairs, while the kitchen is a showcase of forest green set against shiplap, quartzite, and a stained-wood hood that plays to the ceiling beams. The hue continues into

the keeping room, yet in a sea green. In other spaces—such as the primary bathroom, a guest suite, bunkroom, and massive screened-in porch—beige and blues speak to the sky. Pops of cinnamon throughout “punch it up,” says Kendall.

Ensuring room for the entire family—including future spouses and grandkids—was pertinent. “The idea behind the home was a place for their kids to visit,” explains Pond. “Part of that meant giving them their own space.” The bunkroom was designed to accommodate those of all ages, with queen-size beds on the lower bunks. This room and one of the guest suites

are separated from the rest of the home via the dogtrot porch, which provides a cushioned swing ideal for napping. The owner’s sanctuary includes a cozy den—the perfect spot for them to curl up to watch a movie or read a book on a rainy day.

But the real point of the home is the opportunity to come together, and that’s exactly what both the great room and screened-in porch—with its areas for dining, lounging, and playing games—provide. “It is very much about rest, relaxation, entertaining, and being together,” muses Kendall. “They see it as a true gathering space.” See Resources, Back of Book.

When designing the kitchen, Dana Lynch had a head start—her firm’s developer services division (Bspōk Precision Homes) curated the interior design program for the community. This included three distinct styles—the clean, European-inspired Belgian, the sleek Aspen, and the more traditional Vernacular. While the showhouse falls into the latter, Lynch knew she wanted to break from the mold, picturing a cool, young couple updating an inherited family home. Working closely with McKinney Builders, she chose an earthy green for the under cabinets and upgraded the vent hood and backsplash with luxe marble. To infuse personality, Lynch sourced pieces from her private collection, like colorful Murano glass decanters, a large midcentury oak lamp, and a slab of teak. A kismet discovery of vintage wood stools from a Burton home—along with an oversize photograph hung over the glass windows—complete the vision.

“It’s the juxtaposition between different design styles that activates space and grabs attention,” says Lynch, who ultimately gifted the stools to the home’s new owners “knowing they needed to stay with the house.”

Establishing a welcoming entrance for the showhouse, Nancy Felton envisioned a front porch for unwinding and communing with the wilderness. And while the result is serene, the process proved challenging, given the porch’s long and narrow layout. To maximize functionality and comfort, Felton created two distinct areas—a petite breakfast nook and a second, more relaxed seating area. “In the mornings, it serves as a peaceful spot to enjoy a cup of coffee while taking in the stunning views of Lake Burton. In the

evenings, it becomes a cozy haven to relax, breathe in the fresh air, and appreciate the tranquility of the surroundings.” Focusing on simplicity and intentional design, she kept circulation clear and the main door unobstructed. Rather than filling the space with unnecessary elements, Felton carefully selected the right pieces to maximize both usability and aesthetic appeal. Planters filled with faux greenery offer a low-maintenance solution for homeowners splitting time between residences.

Taking risks is Buffy Ferguson’s favorite part about designing a showhouse. “We are known for combining classic timeless design with a modern touch, and we wanted to push the boundaries of that here,” she says of her atypical approach to cabin decor. “The interiors called for a modern sensibility, so we leaned into clean lines and layered in timeless art and oddities to give the room a warm, collected feeling.” Above the console, work by artist Mary Catherine Lowery intertwines the realms of traditional landscapes and contemporary abstractions—a perspective that “perfectly resonates with what we were hoping to capture,” says Ferguson.

The mountain wildlife and lush vegetation surrounding Lake Burton guided Michele Gratch when selecting the wallpapers and artwork that flow through the mudroom, powder room, and adjacent pantry.

“Of course, my first thought was to bring the outside in,” says Gratch. Considering the compact spaces had little natural light, Gratch balanced the dark green trim with brighter green hues in the wallpaper. Likewise, the pantry’s green shelves and the light rugs helped keep the warm chocolate ground from feeling too heavy.

Gratch challenged herself to mix pretty pieces, like heirloom copper pots and ceramics, with practical provisions so the space looks and feels like a real, functioning pantry. “The wallpaper was a little out of my comfort zone as it is not often that I use such floral paper—I like to call it ‘granny chic’—but it paired so beautifully with the paper that I used in the mudroom, I just couldn’t resist,” she says. Gratch continued her thoughtful curation and earth tones into the wet bar that faces the kitchen and living room.

With sweeping views overlooking the crystal clear waters of Lake Burton, the main-level bedroom suite is a destination unto itself. For this cozy retreat, Maggie Griffin embraced the home’s scenic mountain locale to create a “transformative escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.” Avoiding bold, primary colors, she focused on delicate patterns and neutral hues like soft taupes and subtle greiges. “In this beautifully crafted setting, the owners can unwind, breathe deeply, and savor the simple joys of life by the lake, making it a perfect haven for rejuvenation and cherished family moments,” says Griffin. Accents of burnt orange, pheasant feathers, and floral drapery panels form the effect of a chic hunting lodge, while quaint gingham wallpaper and fowl prints in the laundry closet are reminiscent of a cozy English cottage.

The tone continues in the primary bathroom with a lush wallcovering and floral artwork.

A spirited sense of adventure carries into the upstairs bedroom, where Beverly Baribault and her lead designer, Stacey Pelfrey, imagined a female college student might reside during summer breaks. Giving this fictional character a name (Beatrice), persona, and even photo memories drove the design direction in a way that was both artsy and connected to nature. A twin bed maximizes the square footage in the compact space, packing a punch with layered bold prints and textures. “We pull inspiration from our collection of fabrics and finishes until something clicks,” says Baribault. The biggest and most fun challenge was the custom, oversize headboard, which anchors the bed and side tables. “We focus on crafting designs that are not only visually stunning but also practical and livable,” adds Pelfrey. Connected via a hallway, the bathroom echoes the bedroom’s color palette and stationary roman shade. Clean lines on the mirror and fixtures supply an edge.

In the bedroom, a stunning sepia mural wallpaper, a Persian rug, and an 18th-century Italian hutch deliver just that. For the bunkroom, Duffy and Scott Spearman recalled their own kids’ excitement to have a secret space that is not only for sleeping but also for reading and daydreaming. Instead of a headboard, a playful bolster pillow sits at the ready for epic pillow fights. With a graphic twist, the braided wool rug nods to traditional cabin decor. As for the grown-ups’ secret space, a hallway speakeasy beckons, with grasscloth wallcovering and an art gallery giving a “perfectly imperfect” quality. Beyond, a chaise lounge surrounded by found treasures incites curiosity.

Bucking Tradition After spending many summers at Lake Burton, Stephanie Weaver Shurling intimately understands the slow and gentle rhythms of life at the lake. “It is so peaceful in the mornings, and you will see the deer and their babies feeding, rabbits hopping around, and occasionally a fox sprint across the road,” she says. Naturally, the woodland animals were at the top of her mind when she started planning the nursery. “I felt that this room, which is small

For the second outdoor living space, a green area rug planted the seed of inspiration for the rooftop porch. Then, Kristy Holcomb and Paula May built from the bottom up, bringing in all-weather and waterproof accessories such as antlers, owls, leaf-print pillows, and pots of greenery. To create a peaceful respite for the outdoor lover, the finishing touch was a black concrete fountain, enhancing the water sounds of the lake. “The porch is as close to the beautiful nature surrounding the home as you can get without walking out the front door,” they said. Given the gorgeous view and their experiences as full-time lake residents, the pair felt inclined to deliver a design as beautiful and majestic as the mountains.

With many pieces sourced from favorite local shops in the town of Madison, Georgia, they staged the ideal spot for morning coffee, happy hour cocktails, or stargazing after sunset.

For the latter, a custom billiard table (stained black on white oak) and lighting serve as sculptural and atmospheric centerpieces—a choice that “reflects the growing trend of integrating functional art into interiors,” says designer Jordan Victoria. “Game tables and entertainment-driven furnishings are becoming more design-forward, blending luxury with leisure.” Bold moves don’t stop there: A vibrant, statement art piece anchors one wall and makes a lasting impression. Imagining the basement as a moody, speakeasy-style lounge, Victoria thoughtfully mixed sensory materials like bouclé, leather, and velvet, bringing a big-city ambience to the rural mountain retreat.

Perched above Lake Burton with sweeping vistas of the North Georgia mountains and the Chattahoochee National Forest, the inaugural Burton Showhouse—aka the “Crow’s Nest”—sits at the highest point in the new 82-acre Burton development from visionary Bill Lynch of Pace Lynch Corporation in collaboration with town planner and designer Lew Oliver and McKinney Builders. MINUTES AFTER LANDING in Panama City, Panama, we’re whizzing past downtown’s glimmering skyscrapers for Casco Viejo, a historic quarter that’s a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site dating back to 1673. The city’s modern skyline soon gives way to the old district’s brick-paved streets, colorful buildings with flowers tumbling over balconies, and a sprinkling of crumbling ruins and centuries-old churches.

We’re staying at the Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo, a waterfront hotel with French Colonial good looks that vaunts its own storied past—once a 1900s social club that hosted Albert Einstein and Queen Elizabeth II. Those glory days still prevail thanks to a chic staff donning Panama hats, butlers who’ll unpack guests’ luggage and draw warm bubble baths, and design accents that call to the country’s heritage and gems like the Panama Canal.

While planted in the humming historic quarter, the Sofitel feels like a secluded resort, with a lush terrace and an infinity pool that hovers above the Pacific Ocean. It’s the perfect prelude to dinner at Caleta, where local ingredients and fresh seafood, like croaker cooked in clay and kampachi marinated in passion fruit, are stars of the menu. Late-night, we hunted down the hotel’s hidden speakeasy, Arcano, to sip rum-tinged cocktails.

Coffee is king in Panama, and while coffee shops like Sisu Coffee Studio dot the district, the coffee ritual at Vera Café offers the chance to indulge in the prized Geisha coffee paired with exquisite bites.

A MAUI MOMENT

AFTER A 10-HOUR flight from Atlanta to Maui, I felt weary. But when a lei slipped around my neck at the Fairmont Kea Lani, my mood lifted—I was ready to embrace what Maui had in store.

The second-largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, Maui comprises diverse terrains, luxurious resorts, and bright tropical flavors. It’s also a good time to visit: Tourism hasn’t fully recovered since the 2023 wildfires, and local businesses need the support.

The Fairmont’s open-air lobby leaves quite an impression: Circular recesses in the ceiling form a striking geometric pattern, while lush greenery and a glimpse of the Pacific Ocean set a tropical tone. Beyond the lobby, two pools (one just for adults) and the beach invite lounging. A renovation in 2024 refreshed the guest rooms, spa (including oceanfront cabanas), and lobby. In the new Hale Kukuna cultural center, guests learn about Hawaiian traditions, from lei-making to local history. Our ocean-view suite made an excellent landing pad—airy, coastal-hued, plush yet unfussy with ample room—after splashing in the pool or exploring the island.

State Park, known for its black sand beach. Another outing took us to the 10,000-foot-tall Haleakala volcano, its arid, red landscape reminiscent of Mars. My favorite moment? A sunrise snorkel with boat tour company Kai Kanani with stops at Molokini Crater and Maluaka where sea turtles grazed.

There was plenty of relaxation too. I booked an Aloha Glow facial at the hotel’s spa that combined Hawaiian botanicals, gua sha, and red light therapy. A stop at the spa’s Hawaiian clay bar ensured that I left feeling rejuvenated and refreshed.

When it comes to food on Maui, even the most unassuming spots delight. In nearby

Kihei, Blue Door Bread & Pizza Company turns out wood-fired pizzas within a plant nursery. At a shack in Paia, the last town before the Road to Hana, Tobi’s Poke & Shave Ice excels in the Hawaiian classics.

A QUICK HOUR-and-a-half drive from Atlanta means vacation mode can set in earlier than usual.

Which is exactly what is needed when I pull into Barnsley Resort, greeted by rolling golf greens, a tree-lined path, and friendly gate attendant.

Situated on the site of a historic 1840s estate, Barnsley Resort is one of the South’s most desired destinations—especially for nearby Atlantans.

The 3,000-acre property brims with gorgeous gathering spots, farm-to-table dining options, an array of activities, and 39 recently renovated free-standing cottages, inclusive of 85 guest rooms and suites. The only challenge you’ll encounter is choosing what to fill your day with.

At Barnsley, everything is in close proximity.

A quick jaunt from the inn after checking in, the Outpost is the go-to destination for snacks,

shopping, and picking up supplies for planned activities. The property is dotted with firepits, and s’mores ingredients are set out every evening at six. I make sure to make a mental note of this because, like many, my vacations revolve around culinary delights—which, fortunately, there is no shortage of at Barnsley.

Executed by Charlotte Lucas Design, the property’s recent $6.2 million remodel is immediately evident. Like stepping into a storybook, my little white cottage features whimsical English detail and thoughtful millwork.

Inside, clear character shines through with bold patterns and mixed materials inspired by the surrounding natural environment. The plaid headboard and bedskirt are my personal favorites, and perhaps aid in my good night’s sleep.

Roughly 60 miles outside of Atlanta, Barnsley Resort features 140 guest rooms, a world-class Jim Fazio-designed golf course, boutique spa, pool, and six newly added pickleball courts, among many more resort upgrades.

Breakfast at Woodlands is a must.

Endless coffee and garden-fresh avocado toast fuel me for my action-packed day that kicks off at the updated Beretta Shooting Grounds. After choosing the lake trail, I’m whisked away by golf cart with my instructor whose spot-on advice ensures I hit at least one clay per station—not too bad for a novice.

Afterwards, lunch at the recently debuted and open-air Biergarten does not disappoint; I indulge in all the German classics: pretzels, beer, and bratwurst.

A leisurely game of pickleball and a walk to the historic ruins follows.

What remains of the original manor built by Godfrey Barnsley for his wife, Julia, overlooks the planned garden and is a can’t-miss. By day, catch sight of the beautiful blooms, and at night, see how the ruins glow with hundreds of twinkling lights. Just beyond, The Farm is home to horses, ponies, and goats, and the best way to experience Barnsley is on the trails by horseback.
