WELCOME

T

wo of this month’s featured homes show how the marriage of classic and contemporary vocabularies can work together with ease and elegance. In Buckhead, architect D. Stanley Dixon and designer Liz Williams artfully transformed a home full of classical architectural references, while creating interiors that reflect how we live today. There is no doubt the end result is one that the home’s original architect, James Means, would approve of most highly. In Decatur, a home by architect William Carpenter and his team at Lightroom blends the best of old and new by putting its best facade forward. A traditional exterior, respectful of the neighborhood, gives way to a series of contemporary spaces. Even one of the home’s most modern elements—a glass-enclosed gallery—pays tribute to the most traditional: the humble dogtrot. The sensitivity given to these homes by their owners and design professionals proves that living with classic and contemporary design doesn’t have to be an either/or proposition. After all, why not have the best of both worlds?

Cancer Treatment Centers of America

®

Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA®) is a national network of five cancer hospitals that focus on treating patients who are fighting complex or advancedstage cancer.

Nearly 70 percent of patients who treat at CTCA make the decision to travel from out of state for their care. The fully-accredited hospitals located in metropolitan Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Tulsa provide them with convenient access to treatment options they often can’t find at home.

with the active participation of the patient. Each plan is customized to address the patient’s unique health needs. The Patient Empowered Care team visits the patient in a single block of appointments, all in one room, allowing patients to interact with each team member in one convenient appointment. The team passes information from one clinician to another following each appointment to ensure that critical updates are communicated to the other members of the team in a timely and accurate manner. This approach provides patients with more complete information about their care. Cancer Treatment Centers of America has a 95% satisfaction rate. And over 90% of patients who participate in the federal government’s quarterly Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey would “definitely recommend” CTCA to other patients. For nearly three decades, CTCA has been committed to finding and providing the cancer care treatment options that are right for each patient, delivered in a welcoming, compassionate environment that enables patients to concentrate on their healing.

CTCA hospitals provide advanced technology and conventional treatment options combined with complementary therapies that include nutritional counseling, mind-body therapies, naturopathic medicine, chiropractic care, acupuncture and spiritual support. CTCA offers a different approach to cancer care. Each patient is assigned a dedicated team that provides Patient Empowered Care®. This approach brings medical experts in advanced cancer treatment together with providers of supportive therapies to create an integrated team focused on the individual needs of each patient. This unified team designs and implements a personalized treatment plan

“My care team developed a personalized treatment plan just for me.” When Audrey was diagnosed with breast cancer, she was devastated. Like many newly diagnosed people, she went online, exploring every breast cancer treatment solution. But she couldn’t find exactly what she wanted. She had heard about Cancer Treatment Centers of America® and our unique treatment model. With over three decades of experience in treating complex and advanced-stage cancer, we were the cancer hospital Audrey was looking for. Within a few days Audrey and her care team developed a personalized treatment plan combining leading-edge conventional treatments with scientifically-based supportive therapies. Audrey opted for Brachytherapy, a more advanced form of radiation. And with the help of her dietician and naturopathic doctor, she was able to reduce side effects and stay strong during her treatment. Eight years later, Audrey is confident she made the right decision in going to Cancer Treatment Centers of America. Her husband, children and grandchildren are, too. Read more about Audrey’s treatment and life after breast cancer at cancercenter.com/audrey.

Modern Approach Some of the hottest home furnishing trends emerge at the annual Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, Italy, one of the world’s top design fairs. In April, half a dozen students and professors from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) furniture design program represented the university in person at the event’s SaloneSatellite, an exhibition that features the best designers under 35. The “Colchone Group” of stools by John McMahon (MFA, furniture design, 2012) was just one of the pieces on view. Other SCAD work on display included fine handcrafted pieces ranging from lamps and benches to stools, plus four large, highly detailed digital images. “The design aesthetic and craftsmanship found in these pieces is admirable,” says SCAD furniture design professor Sheila Edwards, who served as a mentor to many of the designers. “And while they are beautiful, they also open up a dialogue on what luxury means in today’s marketplace. This ‘new luxe’ seeks to strike a balance between artistry and a better way of living.” scad.edu

Design to Inspire

Modern Atlanta (MA) and its Design Is Human Week 2013 are back for the sixth year. A celebration of design excellence, the event includes guest speakers and panel discussions with noted design experts, as well as unique art exhibits, new product launches, a pop-up shop and film series. There’s even a studio crawl, which provides entrée into the work spaces of some of the city’s top architects. This year’s MA Home Tour (June 8-9) features contemporary homes from all across Atlanta, including this pool house in Buckhead by Philip Babb Architect. June 3-9; modern-atlanta.org

A retrospective of the work of renowned Finnish architect Eero Saarinen—best-known for his designs of the St. Louis Gateway Arch, the TWA Terminal at New York’s JFK Airport and Knoll’s Tulip and Womb chairs—continues at the Museum of Design Atlanta through June 30. “EERO SAARINEN: A REPUTATION FOR INNOVATION” reviews Saarinen’s short, brilliant career (he died in 1961 at the young age of 51), and the design principles he followed. museumofdesign.org

WESTSIDE STORY

Andrea and Jason Moattar are best known as the stylish brother-sister duo at the helm of Moattar, Ltd., a top purveyor of new and antique rugs for the design cognoscenti. But it’s almost serendipitous that the pair would launch a candle fragrance, which recently debuted at Woo Cosmetics and DRTC Studio. After all, “Moattar” means fragrant and aromatic in Farsi, the native language of Iran. “The scent is a gorgeous blend of ebony wood, patchouli and bergamot, but is quite subtle,” says Jason. “We didn’t want an intrusive candle; we wanted something that would add ambiance to any room without overpowering it.” The hand-poured, soy-based candles are all natural, made in America and have a 50-hour burn time. And the packaging is as unique as the scent: an old Moorish tile pattern served as their inspiration. moattar.com

General Excellence

Brooklyn meets Paris at this unique deli that’s as pleasing to the eye as it is the palate “WE’VE ALWAYS LOVED THE SIMPLE DESIGN AND CASUAL AMBIENCE OF CLASSIC DELIS, so we jumped at the chance to help create that type of place in Atlanta,” says designer Vivian Bencich of Square Feet Studio, the architecture and design fi rm that recently completed The General Muir, a new restaurant near Emory that is no ordinary delicatessen. In fact, it offers an all-day dining experience, which, thanks to a northeast-facing exposure, is light and bright in the morning for diners grabbing a Batdorf & Bronson coffee, but inti-

mate and ambient in the evenings, when brass detailing and dark wood paneling transform the space into a more elegant backdrop for menu items like skillet-crisped trout or roasted duck. Think Brooklyn meets Paris. Collaborating with owners Ben and Jennifer Johnson (also owners of West Egg Cafe) and Chef Todd Ginsberg (formerly of Bocado), Square Feet Studio architects John Bencich and Ashley McClure (also the project manager), found inspiration in disparate places, including New York subways and spaces they’d seen in Europe.

“We were going for a timeless look,” says Vivian. “It all started with a couple of vintage light fi xtures the owners found.” From there, the industrial-inspired design scheme continued: the main dining room is wrapped in a glossy, biscuit-colored subway tile, while brasserie-style ceiling pendants hover above the main dining area. Table lamps in the bar area cast a soft, ambient glow. Steeland-glass windows afford a glimpse into the kitchen, while a graphic plaid tile floor pattern in black, white and gray anchors the space. “We’re very material-oriented,” says Bencich of the fi rm’s design philosophy, which is on full display at The General Muir. “We had a shared vision with the clients, and we love working with extraordinary crafts people.” And it’s the little details that lend the place an air of authenticity: small paintings presiding over booth seating are based on portraits of the owners’ family members. (The restaurant is named after the ship that brought Jennifer’s mother and grandparents to America after surviving the Holocaust.) A found piece was repurposed as the hostess stand. A waist-high band of custom-colored green tile on the walls provides a sliver of unexpected color, which repeats itself in full technicolor in the restroom, as well as on the ceiling trusses above. These one-of-a-kind touches are also reflective of Chef Ginsberg’s personal but experimental menu, which features classics like chopped chicken liver, but also surprises, such as dinosaur kale salad. It’s the perfect marriage of dining and design. thegeneralmuir.com; squarefeetstudio.com

AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi von Habersham Although I consider myself a traditionalist at heart, I do have a soft spot for contemporary design and architecture. After all, it was Atlanta’s modernist buildings that made my early years in this city so memorable. I’ll tell you, it was exciting stuff for a country girl from Montezuma, Georgia. The fi rst modern building that made an impression on me was that round bank building Henri Jova designed for Trust Company of Georgia in the early 1960s. (You know, the building on Monroe Drive that was revamped as the restaurant Pie Bar?) The building’s Space Age concrete roof—one that looks poised for take-off—utterly captivated me when I fi rst saw it back in 1965. And I was so anxious to use those drive-through teller pods that I opened an account at the bank just to do so. Do you remember the excitement when the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel opened in 1976? This was the building that really made a star of architect John Portman. I vividly remember riding in the glass observation elevator up to the top of the 73-story cylindrical building in order to visit the revolving Sundial Restaurant. Now that was revolutionary for Atlanta! I was so giddy over the whole experience that I had to drink two Harvey Wallbangers just to calm myself. And what about Richard Meier’s enameled steel-clad building for the High Museum of Art? That certainly cemented Atlanta’s place on the architectural map. Although the building’s design seems redolent of early 1980s contemporary architecture, it still manages to exhilarate me. But I also feel a sense of nostalgia when I look at the building because it reminds me of an era when Atlanta was just on the cusp of becoming a major metropolitan city. Those were heady days for our city. But, things change. Atlanta is no longer the sleepy Southern city that it once was, so the construction of a new building, no matter how cutting-edge it is, no longer elicits the same excitement. Forty years ago, a modern building was cause for a family outing. And my, what fun outings they were!

WHERE TO GO

NOW OPEN! New foodie destinations around Atlanta

» CHAI PANI brings the addictive street eats and vibrant energy of India to downtown Decatur, including a mouthwatering menu of snacks like okra fries, samosas with a spicy chickpea stew, authentic thalis and Indian-inspired wraps. The sun-soaked space (formerly Watershed) is adorned with pop art-like street murals and large-scale photography, and even cocktails are treated to a spicy spin; the Mumbai Mojito with tamarind powder is a house favorite. 406 West Ponce de Leon Ave., Decatur 30030. (404) 378-4030; chaipanidecatur.com

Since its opening in early spring, Kevin Rathbun’s latest culinary concept, KR STEAKBAR has satiated the appetites of Peachtree Hills’s showroom owners and shoppers alike with spirited cocktails and small plates of prime steak and Italian fare. Now that warmer temps are upon us, the intimate neighborhood restaurant welcomes patrons to dine on its outdoor garden patio designed by The Johnson Studio. 349 Peachtree Hills Ave., Atlanta 30305. (404) 841-8820; krsteakbar.com

» Kevin Gillespie’s recently opened solo venture, GUNSHOW, is shaking up the traditional fine dining scene by forgoing servers and menus and letting guests choose their fare by selecting from seasonally rooted, locally focused dishes delivered to the dining room personally by the chef and his cooks. Gillespie collaborated with Atlanta design talent ai3 to create a quintessentially Southern experience—but one that challenges fine dining tenets with a unique service approach and flow. 924 Garrett St., Atlanta 30316. (404) 380-1886; gunshowatl.com » The Brookwood building welcomes another dining establishment, SALTYARD, to its posh locale. The restaurant’s name alludes to the ancient cultural tradition of sharing salt—a once-rare commodity—with guests as a sign of hospitality and friendship. To that end, the menu focuses on sharable small plates while the cozy setting, designed by Square Feet Studio, features an open kitchen and communal tables. 1820 Peachtree Rd., Atlanta 30309. Local taste connoisseurs dish on their favorite creations that highlight this juicy summertime fruit

“Summer is the perfect season for peaches in the South, and in Georgia especially, there’s no better fruit to use in a cocktail. At the restaurant, I serve a drink called “Summer in the South.” I muddle half a peach and a thyme sprig in a shaker with lemon, honey syrup, all spice dram, Cocchi Americano and Elijah Craig 12-year bourbon. I shake that, strain over ice and garnish with a thyme sprig.” –Eduardo Guzman, JCT. Kitchen & Bar, The Optimist

“I like to juice fresh peaches and save the juice as well as the leftover pulp. I vacuum seal the reserved pulp with Champagne vinegar and leave it to infuse. Then I strain the pulp from the vinegar and combine it with the fresh peach juice, saffron, thyme, butter, honey and a dash of salt to glaze freshly sliced peaches. Tastes delicious with pork, game or cheese.” –Tyler Williams, Woodfire Grill

“I love grilling peaches in the summertime. I start by slicing peaches about a quarter-inch thick, brush them with olive oil and cook them on a cast iron grill pan. The high heat caramelizes the natural sugars in the peaches and the char flavor provides a nice balance to the sweetness. These peaches go great with fresh basil and mozzarella for a light salad or diced up into a salsa with red onion, mint and cilantro to accompany blackened fish tacos.” –Suzanne Vizethann, Buttermilk Kitchen

On par with its plethora of luxe amenities, ST. REGIS ATLANTA is now offering a gourmet picnic basket service. Before heading for an afternoon at Piedmont Park or departing for the voyage back home, hotel guests can place a personalized basket order, choosing from options such as a pickled okra salad or a fluffernutter sandwich with homemade marshmallow crème, almond butter and banana. A special children’s menu, plus fine wine, cheese and charcuterie are also among the savory choices. 88 West Paces Ferry Rd., Atlanta 30305. (404) 563-7900; stregisatlanta.com

Get away completely. Surround Yourself!

Discover Georgia’s Blue Ridge Experience.

Exploring Antiquing Biking

Surround yourself with beauty, relaxation and natural fun in Georgia’s Blue Ridge, only 90 miles north of Atlanta but a million miles away from the traffic, stress and anxiety of the city. With 106,000 acres of national forest, Blue Ridge is the antidote for what ails you. Rent a cozy cabin or a luxury mountain home overlooking peaceful ridges and valleys, or beside a rushing stream or the crystal clear Toccoa River. You may never want to leave the cabin, but you should take the time to explore the authentic mountain towns of Blue Ridge and McCaysville and shop in surprisingly upscale specialty shops and galleries that line Blue Ridge’s Main Street. Treat yourself to a massage at a local day spa or in your cabin. At the end of the day, chill out by the fireplace or enjoy a fabulous dinner at one of our wonderful restaurants; the choices of dining spots are simply amazing. Your experience in Georgia’s Blue Ridge will bring you back again and again and some day (like us) you might just decide to stay.

“Happiness is not a state to arrive at, but a manner of traveling.” - MARGARET LEE RUNBECK

L

aunching a new magazine has been, by far, my most rewarding professional experience, and I am thrilled to share with you the second issue of Healthy Travel. The staff and I are grateful and humbled by the buzz for our new magazine; I sincerely appreciate all of the handwritten notes and emails from new fans and readers. Getting to live my passions—travel, health, fitness and wellness—and call it “work” is the ultimate gift. In this summer issue, we’ve compiled a few amazing warm-weather getaways, including Chicago, Scrub Island, Sonoma and our favorite off-season ski resorts in Canada. Each destination offers health-focused travel at its best. If you need a little romance, make plans to visit Dos Brisas, a luxury ranch in Texas, where you’ll indulge in spa treatments and haute cuisine. We’ve also showcased top farmers markets, summer glam style and beauty must-haves for the beach bag.

Summer truly is my favorite time of year, and I’m fortunate that my three children are a little older (16, 14 and 12), so our travel experiences are becoming more adventurous (and easier!). Family vacations have evolved, and resorts now are filled with creative outdoor healthminded activities for all ages; we’re confident you’ll find the right trip for your family in this issue—a vacation that will provide a lifetime of memories and laughter. Please continue to send us your thoughts, comments and questions via social media (Twitter: @alisonlewis and Facebook: facebook. com/healthytravmag), email and snail mail, and send along your favorite healthy travel finds, too. Thank you for reading, and cheers to an adventurous summer!

Why A Destination Race? “Training and running in and around the same places can get old,” says runner Sean McCrary of Dallas, Tx., “Planning a destination marathon allows you the opportunity to experience a new place and new people who all share something in common.” For Anna Belyaev of Western Springs, Ill., it's more about the magic of the run. “You are instantly transformed from tourist to a runner who is part of the local and universal pack. And, you don’t miss anything,” shares Belyaev, “the taste of the air, the way the light transforms the view, the sounds of the city winding up or down.” Sunni Thompson of Atlanta, Ga., adds, “It’s also a great reason to visit every amazing local restaurant without feeling guilty about what you’re eating."

VISITING Scrub Island is

like going back in time. Located on a previously uninhabited swath of land in the British Virgin Islands, it’s the ultimate privateisland retreat. The island is so remote and pristine, in fact, you’ll never so much as feel the compulsion to whip out your phone, tablet, or lap top between sips of rum punch and Caribbean sunsets. Though the island may feel like a world away, getting there is as hassle-free as the resort itself; hop on a flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico, catch a short connection to Tortola, then board the resort’s private yacht for the 10-minute sail to Scrub Island. Just three years old, Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina boasts fifty-two guest rooms and a handful of villas, not to mention world-class dining and spa services. Still need convincing? Here are our top reasons to disconnect on Scrub Island.

BREATHTAKING BEAUTY. Prepare to be stunned by the postcard vistas of Scrub Island. Icy blue water laps at the soft sand beaches as you gaze at the horizon, where the sea meets green-top mountains that seem to sprout from the ocean floor. Lush tropical foliage forms a frame for the photos you’ll be snapping between naps in a palm-shaded hammock or private nook at the beach.

views during your treatments at Ixora Spa. For the daring or young at heart, Pavilion Beach features a water trampoline. Poolside at Scrub Island’s Marina and Pavilion Beach. More breathtaking views of Pavilion Beach.

SWEET SUITES. Generous-sized rooms and villas, filled with warm, rich woods and bold Caribbean color, will encourage lazy mornings. Spacious outdoor terraces, King-size beds, Egyptian combed cotton sheets and down bedding, and L’Occitane bath products are but a few of the lavish amenities found here. You may be tempted to stay inside all day if not for the views outside your window.

BEAUTIFUL BEACHES. There are three private ones at Scrub Island, each offering something different. Beach-hop until you find a favorite, but North Beach, which features 1,000 feet of shoreline, chaise lounges, a sparkling pool and the One Show Beach Bar, is often the first stop for guests. Beside the marina is Pavilion Beach, perfect for relaxing near the multilevel main pool, Jacuzzi and restaurants. Water activities and snorkeling are plentiful here, or simply drag your lounge chair into the water to stay cool while you daydream. Before kayaking over to the couples-friendly Honeymoon Beach for a superprivate afternoon, pick up a picnic lunch from the on-property gourmet market.

INCREDIBLE SPA TREATMENTS. Lots of places promise relaxation, but Scrub Island is the zenith of chilled-out bliss. The Ixora Spa, set on a hill that looks over the clear Caribbean Sea, features a full-service menu of treatments, an infinity pool and a relaxation deck. The Eterno Massage is a must-book, incorporating deep-tissue pressure with heat and lavender oil. Full- and half-day packages are available, too. Ahhhmazing.

IMPECCABLE SERVICE. From the moment you step off the ferry on to Scrub Island, the gracious and friendly staff will cater to your every whim, providing complimentary rum punch upon arrival, a private launch to Trellis Bay and concierge service. Whatever your needs, the people at Scrub Island will take care of it.

A stunning evening view of Scrub Island. The kid's pool provides entertainment for the young. Beachside activities like yoga help adults reach a state of zen. Explore the underworld with Dive BVI. Gourmet beachside appetizers at One Shoe Bar.

FINE WINING AND DINING. With more than 20 years of experience as a chef and restaurateur, Italy-raised Davide Pugliese now serves his fresh, inventive recipes to lucky resort guests. Some favorite offerings: homemade muesli, watermelon carpaccio with fresh beets, and grilled salmon with a guava glaze and sweet potato mash. The main restaurant, Caravela, serves traditional dishes made with fresh island ingredients. Tierra! Tierra! cooks up appetizers, salads and sandwiches with American and Caribbean flair. Try the Jamaican jerk salad with homemade avocado dressing or a mango-papaya salad with grilled shrimp and drizzled with tropical vinaigrette. Order drinks to enjoy poolside; we’re fans of the ting (a Jamaican carbonated grapefruit beverage) and dark rum. On a night when you really want to indulge, opt for a private dinner for two served anywhere at the resort.

AWESOME WATER SPORTS. Check out Dive BVI, located in Marina Village, to find an adventure that suits you. Exotic marine life is plentiful here, so don a mask and snorkel the surrounding bays, coves and reefs to spot yellow frogfish or experience the best scuba around. Also available: sailing lessons for kids and island-hopping excursions. Charter a boat for a deep-sea fishing trip, or board a catamaran for a Champagne sunset cruise. If you want to stay closer inland, try the beachside water trampoline, kayak the shallow beach waters or paddle board for an afternoon.

THERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. As perfect for a romantic vacation for two as it is forfor a fun-filled family getaway, Scrub Island offers the best of both worlds, whether you choose to plug out or plug in, adventure or relaxation, multicourse dinners or beachside burgers. And despite being located in the middle of an isolated slice of paradise, its calendar of events includes music festivals, regattas, winepairing dinners and steel-drum music dance parties. The only question we have is, why aren’t you packed yet?

CANADA is known for winter sports, but during the off-season, ski resorts remain a hub for outdoor adventures and spectacular scenery. Summertime is when the snowy white faces of mountains turn green; the back bowls become mountain biking and hiking trails; and gondolas transport hikers instead of skiers. Bonus: you can leave behind your parka. Whether you're zip-lining, hitting scenic paved trails or taking advantage of an extra-long ski season, Canada’s off-season offerings are as fantastic as they are fun. And they’re all easy trips from major cities (also worth a visit in their own right).

Whistler Blackcomb WHISTLER BLACKCOMB , near Vancouver, British

Columbia, is perfect for adventure-seekers, offering everything from low-key golfing to mountain biking, zip-lining and glacier skiing. It’s also home to some of the finest restaurants and spas in North America. “Whistler Blackcomb's terrain is just as awe-inspiring in the summer as it is in the winter,” says Michelle Leroux, the resort's public

Whistler boasts about 25 miles of paved scenic trails, as well as MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK , the No. 1 lift-accessed downhill bike park in the world, featuring nearly 5,000 vertical feet of trails and a wide range of wilderness trails. HAVING INCREASED THEIR BROOD AND OUTGROWN THEIR FORMER HOME IN ANSLEY PARK, a young couple set their sights on a larger, architecturally significant residence in Buckhead. They had grand plans for the property, including removing the roof and adding a second story, but called architect D. Stanley Dixon straightaway before they purchased it. “As I drove up to the house, I immediately realized it was the work of James Means,” Dixon explains, referring to Atlanta’s 20th-century master of colonial American architecture. Knowing this, Dixon insisted they update the house in other ways—such as adding a lime wash instead of white paint to the exterior. His artisans applied this most generously under the eaves, creating the effect of ages of rain erosion. Taking cues from Virginia’s

Architect D. Stanley Dixon imbued new life to a 1970s colonial revival home originally designed by architect James Means. Dixon added a lime wash to the brick facade, as well as a slate roof, Georgian-influenced portico and new dormer windows.

The antique Italian olive wood secretary is from William Word Antiques. The draperies, brought from the family’s previous home, were lengthened with new fabric panels to fi t the new space. The wallpaper is a design by David Goldberg, available through Jerry Pair. opposite In the foyer, an antique Khotan rug from Sullivan Fine Rugs boasts the perfect balance of pinks and blues, and melds beautifully with Williams’s color scheme. A slight blue tone also appears in the faceted sea glass chandelier by Ironies, available through Ainsworth-Noah. Framed botanicals from Edgar-Reeves hang above an Italian settee from Parc Monceau. The painted sconces are Italian.

historic Gunston Hall, he also added an octagonal portico, plus symmetrical wings on the back of the home, dormers to light upper hallways and two new staircases to connect the downstairs living spaces with private quarters above. Taking a page from Means’ playbook, Dixon incorporated reclaimed materials—from antique bricks to crown glass windows— at every turn, creating a seamless marriage of old and new. Historically sensitive detailing—which included intricate trimwork, a slate roof, egg-and-dart moulding, unlacquered brass hardware,

restoration glass and Chippendale railings—was so immaculate that Dixon’s fi rm received a Shutze Award for the project from the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art in 2011. Gracious landscaping was achieved at the hands of the equally esteemed John Howard of Howard Design Studio. For the interiors, the homeowners returned to Liz Williams, who had outfitted their previous home when they were fi rst married. She brought in softness with a breezy, blue-green scheme, tempered by subtle touches of pink. Incorporating a few key furnishings

from the couple’s former abode, she reupholstered several pieces and added luxurious wall coverings for depth and interest. Allowing the architectural design process to evolve over time was perhaps one of the project’s biggest boons, as not rushing the interior design allowed it to unfold in a beautiful way. “Often, we don’t have the luxury of waiting 18 weeks for orders, but in this case, we were able to hold out for some great pieces, such as those from Holland & Company and Niermann Weeks,” Williams notes. In fact, it was a unique hall table from MacRae that set the decorating plan in motion. “We didn’t want a table that would be too formal on the brick floor, but because it’s the fi rst thing you see from the front door, it had to be special,” she says. It was those types of touches that fostered the marriage of historic precedent with current-day elegance. “By layering architectural interest, we referenced history even stronger than before, but we also made a house that lives like people do today,” says Dixon. The owners got the comfortable family house they desired, where no rooms are off limits. And as this young family— and their home—has grown, they’ve found room to enjoy it all. Furnishings with a certain nod to menswear— including a Ligne Roset sofa in gray flannel and an iconic Eames chair decked out in brown leather—give this condominium at The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Atlanta, Buckhead high-fashion status. The armchairs are by Roche Bobois. Meanwhile, see-through pieces like a whimsical glass chair by Spectrum, opposite, appear barely there, but still function in a big way.

clockwise, from left Brown leather dining chairs from Holly Hunt are embossed with an alligator print. The table suits the owner’s every need; it can extend to accommodate friends and family, and serves as a desk surface, too. The chandelier is by artist Christopher Moulder. In the walnut-clad entry, “the client asked us to frame his black-and-white photography so he could switch out the photos,” says Brown. “In a big glass high-rise, you don’t have a lot of wall space, so this is a great way to rotate your art.” The console table is by Baker. Like the rest of this residence, a guest room is elegantly understated, with the gray flannel channel-quilted bed accented with pops of purple. A Baker lamp sits atop a chest by Hickory Chair. opposite A mix of low-profile and see-through pieces keeps the focus on the breathtaking view. Inspired by a gray flannel suit “with a great brown leather belt and brown shoes,” Brown opted for a custom leather chaise and a pull-up chair totally upholstered in gray flannel, matching the draperies. The glass-and-steel shelves are from Smith Grubbs & Associates.

THIS HIGH-RISE CONDOMINIUM couldn’t be more “fitting” of its owner—it’s well tailored down to the last detail, as impeccably dressed as the man who calls it home. “My client is so chic and sophisticated that, when I pitched the whole idea of designing around an Armani suit, he was on board immediately,” recalls designer Robert Brown, himself a former fashion executive. “He just lit up; it was perfect for him.” In fact, an aura of suave sophistication is evident from the moment you walk in the door. Walnut veneer wraps the foyer walls, creating “kind of a quiet moment before you go into a living space that is light and bright and open to the world,” says the designer. “We actually paneled the walls in a modern way; not at all like a typical room with raised paneling. The sheets of walnut veneer attached to the walls really warm it up.” In the main living area, though, it’s breathtaking vistas that take center stage. Furnishings with a certain nod to menswear— from the gray flannel sofa and alligator-embossed brown leather dining chairs to the gray tweed rug—in no way compete with the 93

The master bedroom is completely wrapped in gray flannel, from the upholstered walls to the draperies. “When the draperies are closed—they’re motorized—the room is totally blacked out, which is nice because the owner travels internationally, and he can sleep no matter what time zone he’s in,” Brown says. “I love the acoustical quality of the upholstered walls; it’s so quiet.” Bedside tables from Baker and lamps from Holly Hunt flank a custom bed. French drawings from T. Botero Galleries hang above it. The carpet is Missoni, available through Stark.

views beyond; instead, they’re quietly complementary. “It’s all about not blocking the view,” Brown says. “We kept the sofa low and didn’t place a lot of lamps around the sofa.” Instead, he used lighting with slim silhouettes—a sculptural bronze twig floor lamp in one corner, and a pharmacy lamp in another. Meanwhile, see-through pieces appear barely there, but still function in a big way. A whimsical glass chair by Spectrum, for instance, floats in the space “so the room doesn’t feel stuffy,” Brown explains. “You see right through it but, when you really study it, it’s incredibly interesting.” Likewise, a pair of glass-andsteel bookshelves flanks a column in one corner, providing plenty of room for coffee table books as well as wine storage below. It was important to the designer that everything flowed in this small space. Thus, the same gray fl annel found in the living room is also prevalent in the master bedroom; not only are draperies made of the same fabric, but also the walls are upholstered in it. And, yes, brown leather fi nds a home here, too. “The room is very straightforward,” Brown says. “There’s a simple platform bed with a headboard that stretches the length of the wall, even behind the two Baker side tables by Barbara Barry. But the Missoni carpet really is the focal point. The gradation from gray to white almost makes you feel like you’re stepping into ripples. It’s very interesting from an optical point of view.” In fact, it’s that straightforward approach that gives this high-rise its glamour. “It’s all about editing with something this understated,” Brown says. “When you think you have completely edited it, you come back the next day and take out a few more things. You want it as simple as possible without being cold.” SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK. 95

HISTORY Written by Kate Abney

For a new residence in Decatur, architect William Carpenter and his ďŹ rm Lightroom infuse contemporary style into a traditional neighborhood. Hidden in plain sight, the home seamlessly blends the best of old and new.

Ben Park and Allison Loudermilk’s 4,000-square-foot Decatur home was built from scratch using simple materials with minimalist applications. The couple’s desire was to create a facade that melded with the character of the neighborhood, satisfying their penchant for something modern. The residential design that architect William Carpenter and his firm Lightroom delivered features a traditional front facade and rear modern structure—a harmonious compromise between the two. 97

above The open-format, eat-in kitchen contains sleek wood and glossy SCIC laminate cabinetry. The clerestory windows were a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired touch. “From the kitchen, you can see straight up to the sky,” Carpenter intimates. below left The home’s enclosed courtyard is a reference to the layouts of Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous Usonian structures. Wright was one of Carpenter’s greatest inspirations for this project, as were idols like Norman Jaffe and Leila Ross Wilburn—whose design actually resided on this site many decades ago. “Wilburn’s approach emphasized universal space, sense of openness, natural light, use of sustainable local materials, detail and capturing the views on a site,” he says. below right In the family room at the front of the home, a sliding door creates privacy when guests are visiting. The stairwell tread turns up vertically to become the railing, evocative of sculptural Southern staircases.

Interior design decisions were made with the help of Katherine Hojnacki, but Loudermilk added her own decoration, such as a single sweet Americana chair often pulled up to the dining table. Knoll Rissom chairs, a George Nelson Saucer pendant and Eames molded-plastic Eiffel chairs serve as modern grace notes. Carpenter engineered the house to have a south-facing passive solar side and overhanging eaves to shade the home from summer heat. In the winter, the sun’s warmth is captured in the energy-efficient home.

W

ILLIAM CARPENTER may have numerous accomplishments to his name, but it’s the Decatur architect’s 4,000-square-foot “Leila House”—an affectionate nod to Georgia’s fi rst major female architect, Leila Ross Wilburn—that he considers his fi rm’s most pivotal project to date. Built for young couple Ben Park and Allison Loudermilk at a modest $120 per square foot, Leila House boasts high-efficiency geothermal heating, numerous custom furnishings and modern-classic accents ranging from George Nelson light fi xtures to Eames Eiffel chairs. The forward-thinking Loudermilk is an Atlanta native and graduate of Barnard College who works as an editor for How Stuff Works; Park is a scientist with the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention whose work takes him around the globe. Both wanted Carpenter to push the envelope with their abode. 99

above The master bathroom is a clean-lined combination of warm-toned walnut and Georgia marble, much like the materials Wilburn used during her own era, among them pine, oak, cypress, granite and marble. “To me, she was so far ahead of her time,” Carpenter says of the early 20th-century architect. A bathroom door leads to a jaunty outdoor shower. right The family’s bedrooms are located right off the main corridor. In the master, a custom-designed platform bed provides a seamless solution for storage.

“Ben was more interested in the modern part of the house, while Allie was more interested in a modern view of history,” Carpenter explains. “What you see here is a marriage between their two views.” Leila House, which appeared on the Modern Atlanta (MA) home tour in 2012, is the fi rst modern residence in Decatur’s historic MAK district, but you wouldn’t know it from the street. Its charming facade recalls a Wilburn house that resided on this site decades ago. Carpenter maintained the rhythm of traditional homes in the neighborhood by combining the classical, Ecole des Beaux-Arts spirit of Philip Shutze in the front with high-concept Bauhaus ideals in the back. Wilburn, Carpenter explains, was notable for straddling these two disciplines. “But as with any precedent, you have to transform it,” he adds. Clapboards are set back at the corners by steel angles, and rafter tails are capped with sleek metal casings. Evoking a classic Southern dogtrot, the floor plan touts a strong central shotgun axis that flows from the front to the back. Hardwood planks run this same linear path, with bedrooms situated just off the main corridor. An open-format kitchen spills into the living room and courtyard on one end, while the front section of the home often serves as guest quarters—easily closed off in the event of company with a sliding wood door—while also housing Park’s home office and a family room for watching TV. Embracing minimalism at every turn, Lightroom delivered exactly what the homeowners desired—complete with clean lines, white walls and lots of built-in storage—all while keeping the project right at their desired budget. “The clients really trusted me with their house,” Carpenter notes. “They let me handle everything.” Perhaps the greatest mark of that trust has been their continued familiarity after Leila House’s completion. They still call on him to house sit when they’re out of town. In fact, he’s become just as good friends with the family dog, Lucy. SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK.

ARCHITECT WILLIAM CARPENTER is highly influenced by the historic vernacular of the American South. The award-winning Decatur architect, who trained under such greats as Norman Jaffe and Samuel Mockbee, is a 20-year professor at Southern Polytechnic University, author of Dwell magazine’s Modern Sustainable Residential Design and the lead architect of projects ranging from the acclaimed Dominey Pavilion to a modern restaurant in Sao Luis, Brazil. But it’s the historically rooted “Leila House” in Decatur’s MAK district of which he’s most proud.

LIFE QUINTESSENTIALLY ATLANTA

DECORATIVE PLATES

What makes an Atlanta house a HOME? In the sixth installment of our year-long series examining the things that are essential to every Atlanta residence, MARCIA SHERRILL dishes on the beauty of hanging plates

DESIGNERS WILL HUFF AND HEATHER DEWBERRY CREATED AN ARTFUL ARRANGEMENT OF PLATES IN THE FOYER OF A BUCKHEAD HOME. 104

tlantans have long enjoyed fl inging plates upon their walls. Why buy art when a platter or collection of butter dishes will do? The look, while not always appearing uncontrived, more often than not comes across with an air of easy elegance. Trying to track down the origins of this phenomenon in the annals of decorating history, there’s really very little information on why people started hanging their plates hither and zither, but it seems as though it’s in our Southern DNA. After all, when two red-hot designers like Kelly Wearstler and Charlotte Moss—who could not be any less alike in their approaches—both use hanging plates in their decorating projects, you know that it’s because they’re both exSoutherners (the former from South Carolina, the latter from Virginia). It’s in our blood. I’ve seen plates hung every way imaginable: Entire stairwells covered from base to crown with blue delft porcelain; kitchens made cozier with Wedgwood drabware or huge pewter platters placed above range hoods; even sunrooms that seemingly sprout to life in the coldest of winters with a smattering of botanicalinspired Flora Danica saucers and plates. When displayed with aplomb, the wall arrange-

ments can be a thing of staggering beauty. And while porcelain graces the rooms of more classic homes, fun prints and patterns and unique materials make them accessible to the most contemporary at heart, and even the skeptics out there. Melamine plates in kids’ rooms are fun; John Derian’s popular vintage-inspired decoupage plates are whimsical and happy to look it. The best part is that they can be displayed with restraint or wild abandon. I can’t remember a time when my grandmother (the rich one, and a belle to boot), my Mother and I didn’t decorate with plates. They gave the expression “Blue Plate Special” a whole new meaning. But their regular use of them wasn’t always about looks; plates have always been the perfect solution for tight spaces or weird hallways where a larger work of art just wouldn’t suffice. However your family decides to decorate with plates—and you will, remember, because it’s in our DNA—just make sure it’s done judiciously. After all, you don’t need the kids asking, “What are we going to eat on?”
