WELCOME

Young design, right now, is having a

moment with color. Whether it’s just a flirtation or a sign of things to come, we thought we’d dedicate an issue to those who have spun the color wheel with full abandon. The resulting interiors are exciting, energetic and certainly eye-catching. Whether or not color is your cup of tea, I think you’ll appreciate the inspiration from which the colorful spaces spawned. These inthe-now rooms are filled with echoes of the past: from Dorothy Draper in the early 20th century to David Hicks in the 1960s. There’s even a hint of the 1970s in the mix: flamestitch, anyone? But for those of you who prefer creams and taupes over chartreuse and tangerine, worry not—we already have an array of soft interiors lined up for next month. In the meantime, enjoy the issue, rest your eyes and we’ll see you in April. Clinton Smith Editorial Director twitter.com/clintonrsmith

Callan CASTLE A dedicated team restores the Atlanta landmark to its fomer glory BUILT AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY, THIS HOME OF COCA-COLA MAGNATE ASA CANDLER IS SITUATED IN ATLANTA’S FIRST SUBURB, INMAN PARK.

16

ATLANTAHOM ES MAG.COM

Coca-Cola’s brand has remained strong through the years, but soft drink magnate Asa Candler’s former Inman Park mansion gradually lost its fizz. Its roof, rotting columns and cracked tile on its two-story portico

were tarnishing the look of the historic home. A national search for materials and craftsman to replicate original molding and ornamental details, often by hand, were essential in the painstaking restoration of

LOCAL DESIGN/BUILD FIRM HANDCRAFTED HOMES, INC., SELECTED TO OVERSEE THE MANSION’S RESTORATION, CONDUCTED AN EXTENSIVE NATIONAL SEARCH FOR CRAFTSMEN. AFTER A YEAR-LONG PROCESS, THE PORTICO ONCE AGAINS SHINES IN ITS GREEK REVIVAL STYLE.

Callan Castle, which completed construction in 1904 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It took Candler two years to build the red brick home in Atlanta’s first suburb. “Inman Park was really a sign of the growth of Atlanta and prosperity,” says Judy Mozen, president of Roswell-based Handcrafted Homes, Inc., which completed a year-long restoration of the mansion in 2011. “When people would create a suburb and put lots of money in beautiful houses, it meant ‘We’re staying, we’re established and we believe in Atlanta.’”

18

ATLANTAHOM ES MAG.COM

But as Inman Park, like other intown neighborhoods, went through a decline in the following decades, even landmarks like Callan Castle began to deteriorate. The damage was overwhelming. Some of the 100-year-old ornamental cornices and corbels disintegrated in Mozen’s hands as she tried to remove them from the home in order to reproduce every original detail. The columns also were sinking, threatening the Greek Revival-style portico. Mysteries popped up during the restoration, notably with the roof. Mozen discovered it was metal, but since the original design was not available, she undertook an extensive search to find some-

one to make the tiles. Three brothers, using an old government press outside of Chicago, created 4,240 pieces of galvanized steel tiles. Some of the bricks were so soft and fragile that water leaked into the interior walls, requiring Handcrafted to repair the bricks with a special mortar mix and process. Layer after layer of moldings needed to be reproduced to curve around the veranda, while ornamental pieces in a motif similar to ribbons-and-bows were handmade out of rosin. The biggest disaster was the porch’s black-and-white tile, which was uneven and had been filled in with concrete, creating an un-

safe and unstable entryway. Mozen’s team first tried a slightly larger porcelain tile that horrified them because it looked like the floor of a fast-food restaurant, not a historic home. Taking a cue from an old Coke slogan, Mozen says she and the homeowner agreed: “We’ve got to find the real thing.” It took three months before they identified a small Arkansas company that could replicate the porcelain tile, snowflakes and Greek key border. “I loved the idea of restoring the home to its original look,” Mozen says. “It’s a centerpiece of Atlanta architecture.”

Relaxed European Opulence

Naomi von Habersham AROUND TOWN WITH

Many of you might assume that Atlantans have never embraced any color other than beige. (And frankly, I don’t consider beige to be a color.) It’s understandable because finding a local home that’s rife with vivid color is much like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. But it hasn’t always been this way. Long before our love affair with cream, taupe, straw, hay and all of the neutral shades in the Sherwin Williams fan deck, we were a colorful city. Really and truly, we were! We once decorated our homes in all kinds of exuberant, upbeat hues. In fact, if you want a taste of what many Atlanta interiors used to look like, visit the dining room at The Swan Coach House, a place that is still a bastion of Southern femininity. My mood is always lifted when I dine amongst the restaurant’s sunny colors and charming printed fabrics. (I admit that their frozen fruit salad perks me up, too.) And remember when our wardrobes were a veritable kaleidoscope of pinks, blues and greens, not to mention peppy reds? I remember the fun that I had shopping for colorful sportswear at The Snappy Turtle and Pappagallo, two popular Atlanta shops which, like color, fell by the wayside. I don’t really know what happened, but somewhere along the way we abandoned color for non-color. And while neutrals do play an important role in design, I think it’s high time that we start to embrace a little color in our lives. Just think, without color, we wouldn’t have those marvelous sayings like “Paint the town red, “In the pink and “Talk a blue streak. These expressions wouldn’t be nearly as colorful if you substituted, say, taupe or cream. The only thing that comes to my mind is a quip attributed to the great Billy Baldwin. He once said of his friend, tastemaker and neutral palette devotee Van Day Truex, “Someday Van is going to beige himself to death. If you ask me, I can’t think of a worse way to go!

LE T TER FROM THE P RES I D EN T & TOU R OF KI TCHEN S C H AIR Dear friends and patrons of the Tour of Kitchens, In 1997, the Junior League of Atlanta held its first Tour of Kitchens. For 15 years now, we’ve showcased Atlanta’s most beautiful kitchens and introduced you to innovative approaches from leading local designers. The Tour of Kitchens has raised more than $1 million to support the mission of the Junior League of Atlanta. With your support of the Junior League of Atlanta’s Tour of Kitchens, you are adding to that legacy and helping us fulfill our mission. The Junior League of Atlanta is the third largest League in the world, with approximately 3,600 members. The work our membership does in the community ranges from working in the NICU at Grady Hospital, to conducting our Journey to Literacy reading programs at Atlanta Public Libraries, to presenting Kids in the Kitchen programs that help fight childhood obesity—just to name a few. Each year, our members give more than 900,000 volunteer hours, estimated at a worth of $1.8 million. With these hours, we reach an estimated 650,000 women and children in the Atlanta area, fulfilling our mission of training our members to become effective, trained volunteers for women’s and children’s issues in Atlanta. We recognize the generous contribution of all of our sponsors, and especially thank Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, who provides exceptional resources to the Tour of Kitchens year after year, and the visionary leadership of Brad Hanner, Associate Publisher. We deeply appreciate the numerous volunteers and their tireless work and dedication over the past year to make this the most fabulous Tour yet. As the Junior League of Atlanta wraps up the celebration of its 95th year, we happily celebrate the 15th Annual Tour of Kitchens. Thank you for joining us and contributing to our impact in the Atlanta community. Warmly,

F EAT URE D C HE F DE M ONSTR ATIONS DAV I D L A M O N T In 2003, Atlanta native David LaMont took a job in a coffee shop while attending graduate school. The coffee held his interest more than his courses and nine years later, he’s still obsessing over the mysterious seed. He has overseen Counter Culture Coffee’s Training Center since it opened five years ago, working to inspire “coffee driven people” in and around Atlanta. He lives in Sugar Hill with his wife and two children and dreams of living in Japan again someday.

C HR IS HALL C H E F & MA N AG I N G PA R T N E R Chris is both chef and managing partner at Local Three, which is why he has the least hair of the three partners. A self-taught cook, Chris worked in kitchens from Philadelphia’s Le Bec Fin to Atlanta’s Canoe and 4th & Swift. He grew up nearby on Peachtree Battle Avenue and thus really is a local. Chris now lives in Smyrna with his wife Julie, who is in the restaurant frequently. An avid Georgia Tech fan, he considers home games to be religious ceremonies. You have been warned… In the winter of 2005, Todd Mussman and Ryan Turner opened Muss & Turner’s, a gourmet deli, food shop, and wine store, which is now an Atlanta staple. That fall, Mussman and Turner sat next to Chris, then chef at the Sundial Restaurant, during a meeting at the Atlanta Food Bank. The three became quick friends. Soon a regular at M&T’s, Chris, looking to start his own restaurant, began asking them for advice on how to get started. A few beers and cooked hogs later, a partnership formed and the idea for Local Three was born.

DA N L AT H A M C H E F & C U L I N A R Y D I R E C TO R Dan Latham is the chef and culinary director of Farm Burger Buckhead. Dan comes from farming families of Mississippi and the Ozarks and is known best around Atlanta for Moto Bene, his seasonally-sourced mobile pizza oven. He cut his culinary teeth working with Mario Batali in New York for many years with various operations including Po, The Food Network and Studio del Gusto of Italian Wine Merchants, out of which he produced Babbo’s charcuterie program. After New York, he opened his own spot in Oxford, Mississippi, L&M’s Kitchen & Salumeria as well as Pancetta Ranch, a small custom butcher shop to compliment, for which he earned a James Beard Nomination for Best Chef South. He most recently has been working as a consultant in sustainable meat sourcing and restaurant operations for clients such as Jim N Nick’s BBQ, the Eat Real Festival of Oakland and Los Angeles, and Burger Up of Nashville.

SCOT T SERPAS EXECUTIVE CHEF & OWNER South Louisiana native and executive chef Scott Serpas has a knack for carving out a style all his own, and his culinary charisma has culled attention from adoring diners and critics alike. From the prestigious James Beard Foundation to Gourmet, GQ and Food & Wine, Scott has been recognized for his honest approach to southern food with Louisiana flair. Serpas True Food is located in an old cotton storage facility in the heart of Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward. Serpas is known for its “true food” approach to cuisine with an edge. It has received local and national acclaim since its 2009 debut and was named one of the 10 “Best New Restaurants in America” by GQ magazine. In 2004, Scott served as executive chef at Atlanta’s popular TWO Urban Licks earning it numerous accolades from Food & Wine, Gourmet, The Oprah Magazine, Men’s Health, InStyle, Conde Nast Traveler, and Wine Spectator. In addition, he has been featured on Food Network’s $40 a Day with Rachael Ray, a New Orleans CBS segment titled, Life, Love and Lunch and on Fox’s Good Day Atlanta.

C HR ISTOPHER CONF ERO D ES I GN ER Christopher Confero approaches every design with new and fresh ideas. Deemed a “one man wonder,” his knowledge of floral design, lighting, graphics, space planning and décor allows him to offer full event development from concept to execution. With Christopher’s background in the arts, he creates full productions that go from the audition, to opening night, to closing curtain within a five-hour time span. His signature style, modern luxury, combines modern style with traditional elements, which he insists still have a meaning for today. Christopher has been published nationally, both in print and on the web. With a client base all along the east coast, this designer is a true trendsetter.

W I L L & L AU R I E M O O R E OWNERS In 1998, Will and Laurie Moore started growing specialty produce for Atlanta chefs. Their farm business has grown into an innovative marketing group delivering fresh local and organic food to Atlantans with their Moore Farms and Friends Online Market. Voted Best CSA in 2010 and 2011 by Creative Loafing magazine and Top 10 Online Markets in the US by babble.com.

BARBAR A O ’NEILL OWNER Barbara O’Neill worked for a New York law firm as the director of information systems until she and her husband moved to Atlanta in 1996. In order to spend time with her young son, she did not return to work but rather served as a full-time volunteer providing computer support to the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children. In this role, she was responsible for the rapid expansion of technology resources available at the shelter. The inspiration for her cookie business came in 2005 after reading a magazine article about three women who had left their careers and opened cookie businesses. She had the valuable baking skills from spending hours in the kitchen with her mom and she uses those skills today to create the wonderful cookies and treats produced daily at The Cookie Studio. Combining her passion for baking with her commitment to the shelter, she has built a business that produces award-winning treats while also providing ongoing financial support to the shelter.

FLAGLER AVENUE NE ATLANTA

Poggenpohl Atlanta kitchen designer, John Coulter, made a stunning and functional renovation to this kitchen with limited space. The real estate savvy homeowners needed a kitchen that was perfect for entertaining and cooking. From the home’s modest exterior, you would never expect to see such a spectacular contemporary styled interior. The kitchen is open to the living room and is complimented by a contemporary wall mounted fireplace. When standing at the kitchen’s peninsula, which houses the sink, dishwasher, oven, downdraft and induction cooktop, there is an amazing view of the pool and the beautifully landscaped A BO U T T H E backyard, featuring tropical palm trees. The glass doors in the center of the room expose this scenic backyard.

K ITC HE N

They used the existing kitchen space as a footprint for the new design. The original peninsula was on an angle and the homeowners wanted to keep it that way. The style they chose for their kitchen was Poggenpohl’s +Segmento in Teak Lava. This laminate cabinetry provides a textured-yet-water-resistant surface and an environmentally friendly alternative to endangered tropical teak. The +Segmento kitchen style combines wide vertical segments with horizontal channels and the sleek countertops by Caesarstone in pure white quartz complete the kitchen’s contemporary look. The refrigeration was concealed with the Poggenpohl teak lava paneling for an overall streamlined look. This kitchen maximizes storage with a row of top cabinets above the wall cabinets that are operated by a touch latch door opening system. The under cabinet puck lights, provide enough illumination for food preparation and everyday kitchen tasks. The wet bar on the side wall of the kitchen features a wine cooler, sink, and another cabinet for general storage.

LIT TLE JOHN TRAIL NE ATLANTA This stunning kitchen showcases the best of contemporary kitchen design. The homeowners purchased a home and planned to remodel, but it became apparent it would have to be torn down. They envisioned an Italian villa incorporating classic elements.

The kitchen is designed for entertaining. Two symmetrical islands were planned as work stations that double as seating and prep/clean-up areas—each with a sink and dishwasher. A Wolf rangetop ABO U T T H E is the focal point with a convenient pot filler faucet, freezer and separate refrigerator towers nearby. Note how the dual Miele ovens are treated—placed side-by-side with warming drawers beneath them, encased in oak frames and cantilevered beyond the surrounding cabinets. This feature is repeated with the coffee system and speed oven.

K ITC H E N

One of the most fascinating features is the interplay of lights and darks and surface textures. Four colors from Leicht were used—a warm, light cherry, a light high-gloss lacquer, oak in a dark anthracite finish for the oven surrounds, and stainless steel drawers under the rangetop. The dark wood of the floors, door and window trim is juxtaposed with the light cabinetry and wall color. The cabinetry and the zebrawood island bar tops play against the stainless steel of the island tops, rangetop drawers and appliances with accents of the chairs, bar legs and faucets. CSI Kitchen & Bath Studio designed the cabinetry for all the bathrooms, laundries, closets and outdoor kitchen.

EAST PARK LANE NE ATLANTA These homeowners opted to renovate their home rather than move or build. They loved the front portion of the home, but wanted to change the area they lived in the most being the kitchen and den. The space had an awkward ceiling that was too tall for the narrow space and other features that did not take advantage of the beautiful doors to their well-loved back yard.

ABO U T T H E

K ITC H E N

A warm-toned travertine was laid in a herringbone pattern to visually widen and ground the room. The ceiling was changed to a gentle barrel vault allowing the skylights to be perfectly centered. The French doors were changed to sliders and the travertine floor was carried to the patio.

Floor to ceiling cabinets extend out into the den with room for a coat closet, media equipment and china with upper cabinets accessed by a rolling ladder. The peninsula holds a sink, dishwasher, trash, refrigerator drawers, and two table lamps intended to make this room divider appear as a buffet. The strapped hood mimics the ceiling design and complements the tones of the book matched Calcatta marble slab backsplash. Crisp cabinets with inserts contrast with a hutch made from antique lumber. The plastered ceiling and polished nickel lanterns, hardware and faucets give the room its sparkle.

SHERWOOD ROAD NE ATLANTA Eight years ago, homeowners Amy and Tom began the process that has resulted in this wonderful light filled home which retains all the character of its original design, but has been updated to include all that’s needed to live in the twenty-first century. They found this unique 1927 Mediterranean style bungalow and it was love at first sight. Amy had spent part of her childhood on the island of Crete and felt an immediate connection to the home. It brought back visions of the white washed cave homes of the Cyclades Islands of Greece.

ABO U T T H E

Once in the house, Amy and Tom took some time to live in the space and plan how to incorporate the home’s original charm and features with today’s lifestyles. A complete kitchen remodel, a second bathroom and more storage were priorities. So with the help of their architect, contractor and the staff at Diversified Cabinet Distributors, Amy and Tom took on a complete home renovation.

K ITC H E N

The highlight is this totally new kitchen. Shaker style white painted cabinets, white marble countertops and back splash tile, and professional style stainless steel appliances were selected for their timeless appeal. The new, more efficient layout allows for a small seating area so friends can join them in the kitchen. And much to their delight, the homeowners found they could open up the ceiling and add cedar beams blending the kitchen seamlessly into the light, organic feel that brought them to this home originally.

EAST MORNINGSIDE DRIVE NE ATLANTA Located in the heart of Morningside, this year’s kitchen project was one of several projects we have completed for this couple and after living in the home for over 20 years, they were ready to completely renovate the kitchen.

Their goals were to open it up to the family room and the back of the house with a pool and full deck to enhance the flow for entertaining and to bring in more light. The existing footprint of the house remained the same although the interior space was reconfigured to enlarge the kitchen and make it flow ABO U T T H E for cooking and entertaining.

K ITC H E N

The inspiration began with their summer home in Martha’s Vineyard that they wished to mirror with colors and feel. Some favorite art pieces they collected over the years were sculpted by a charter fisherman, Scott McDowell, who only sculpts in the winter. Bringing home to Atlanta a copper blue fish piece, they decided to create the feel of their new kitchen around this piece. Sea colored hues of glass tile, leathered granite and a beautiful zebra wood countertop all pulled this feel together in subtle accents of warmth and coolness. GE Monogram appliances create a smooth integrated stainless suite of appliances. Greenfield knotty alder cabinets have a stained sunset finish on them. A dish rack at countertop level displays their colorful dishware making serving and clean up easy.

EAST ROCK SPRINGS ROAD NE ATLANTA “The very first time I met Teresa, I knew we would become fast friends,” recalls the homeowner of the cottage kitchen, “she was singing opera along with the CD that was playing in the showroom! I knew I would like working with someone who could make me laugh.”

“We need a new kitchen – but we don’t want it to look new – does that make sense?” So began the relationship of Rose Hall Kitchen Galleria designer Teresa Shields and the owners of this 1930s home.

ABO U T T H E

K ITC H E N

The design collaboration began first with the desire to stay true to the spirit and scale of the home with the selection of quaint cottage inspired details such as classic inset cabinetry in a rich emulsion finish that mimics years of paint layers in buttermilk and sage green. The layout was designed by keeping form and function in mind – with the inclusion of two islands housing an extra oven, warming and microwave drawers, ice machine and refrigerator. While the two-tiered island allows for a prep area and breakfast bar, the second island is spacious and perfect for baking or a buffet dinner. Open shelving on the islands maximizes storage space and adds to the relaxed atmosphere. Beaded trim echoes the original window and door casings found in the home. Period details were interwoven from the nickel hardware finishes and antique holophane lighting to the soapstone countertops and hand-crafted subway tile. Cabinetry panels hide the refrigerator and dishwasher while the farmhouse style soapstone sink accommodates large roasting pans. The Viking range’s good looks are balanced by the charming mantle hood.

SYCAMORE STREET DECATUR The owners of this charming home in historic downtown Decatur wanted an open, light-filled kitchen to replace the four small rooms that originally comprised the area. They brought in Michele Krahe—the architect—and Home Forge Remodeling to create a comfortable workspace and improve traffic flow by removing a butler’s pantry, breakfast room, and closet.

ABO U T T H E

Our first task in bringing the kitchen of this 90-year-old home into the 21st century was to restructure the ceilings of the original four rooms, giving the new space a consistent height. Removing the interior walls and opening a new entrance to the hallway brought the kitchen into the flow of the rest of the family’s living area. Michelle’s innovative design includes an island with prep space, and allows light to flow from the French doors and large bank of west-facing windows through the kitchen and into the formal dining room. Slate floors and custom cabinets bring warmth and functionality to the work areas while maintaining the house’s historic character. The Viking range and other stainless appliances, thoroughly modern and fully capable of meeting this busy family’s needs, are graceful in style and evoke the feeling of an era gone by. Granite workspaces on the counters and the island match with that of a bar custom-designed by the architect and owner to house his collection of fine wines.

K ITC H E N

Finally, and critically important to the family, the renovation only took five weeks—from the day the water was turned off to the day the owners were taking dinner out of their new oven.

This beautiful kitchen has become the heart of the Kelly family’s new home. Michael Bell of Inspirations Design Studio collaborated with Andrew and Amy Kelly of 1023 Construction to create this distinctive kitchen that provides professional functionality while also serving as the center for entertaining and family activities. The Kelly family needed a kitchen that would complement the beauty of their new home but withstand the daily rigors of young children. Large windows flood the kitchen with an abundance of natural light that continues through an oversized arched opening into the family room. This light is A BO U T T H E captured by the pearlized white finish on the flush-inset cabinetry and enhances the transitional design elements infused throughout the design. The mahogany island provides a modern twist to the design by framing the seating with unique deep dish ends that enhance the visual depth of the rich espresso finish.

An extra-wide stainless hood flanked by tall cabinets with art niches frames the marble backsplash to create an elegant backdrop for the kitchen. An elegant Carrera marble on the island is accompanied by durable quartz countertops along the perimeter. The final touches of this transitional design include distinctive lighting fixtures, beautiful faucets and polished nickel hardware.

FOXCROFT ROAD NW ATLANTA

The clients of this mid-century home needed a whole home update that included a full kitchen remodel. Focused on opening up the floor plan to enhance the flow of the home, Dovetail removed dividing walls to reduce the defined boundaries and enhance the natural light. Additionally, these clients had a particular affinity for the large island concept to provide both practical storage space and a gathering place for guests.

ABO U T T H E

The home’s architecture inspired the final design transitioning from an outdated area, to a space balancing function with comfort and client taste preferences. The palette, inspired by the stunning Calcutta Gold Select marble slabs, consists of crisp white cabinets enhanced with a soft pewter glaze and polished nickel hardware with warm gray brick style glass carefully selected to complement the marble veining. Much attention to detail was given when selecting the inset cabinets, paneled front appliances, applied molding and furniture style toe kicks to create a customized look and feel.

RIVERMEADE DRIVE NW ATLANTA

These past clients were buying another home and really loved the house and lot, but the kitchen needed updating. After buying the home, they called Jim Meloy, CKD, of Kitchen & Bath Concepts to redesign the 40 year-old space. The kitchen did not meet the homeowners’ life style, but did have the ingredients for an open concept plan: a view of the lake, ample square footage and walls that could be removed. A kitchen was designed using the client’s wish list while remaining true to the overall architecture. Included in the design’s many focal points are stacked cabinets with glass doors, a built-in banquette, custom millwork, cherry cabinets, a desk area, and hidden storage. Visual impact is created with a combination of all the design elements from the Golden Fantasy granite, the toast and ochre backsplash to the bronze finish on the hardware and plumbing.

ABO U T T H E

K ITC H E N

Eliminating a wall and pass through, allowed for a multifunctional center island which serves as a gathering area. The island includes a variety of storage solutions plus a cooktop, prep sink, ice maker, warming drawer and microwave. A key design element of this kitchen was incorporating the pantry, which was relocated to the old laundry room, and contains a second refrigerator, sink, dishwasher, and undercounter washer and dryer. The result is a kitchen that maximizes space, organization, cooking, and style.

BRANDY STATION COURT SE ATLANTA The homeowners had a vision of sophistication that could be achieved and turned to Distinctive Remodeling Solutions, Inc., architect Kenneth Lynch & Associates, and designers John Arnott and Shirley McFarlane to make that dream a reality.

The kitchen needed updating. Walls were removed and additional square footage added to create an open floor plan. Sleek cabinetry by Berloni is topped with counters in Silestone and Ice Stone. The expanse of the island anchors the space. The kitchen, bathed in warm neutrals, is ABO U T T H E accented by clean lines of pendant lights and cabinet pulls in metallic tones. The finishing touch, a backsplash of cracked glass, brilliantly ups the “wow” factor.

The foyer and stairway of the home felt narrow. Relocating the powder room allowed for expansion of the interior space and front porch. The roof above was reworked to blend with the entry. Pride of place goes to the stairway and balcony which boast a handrail system of stainless cable and solid glass panels. Moda Floors & Interiors achieved the composition of interior finishes and to ensure that an authentic continuity was maintained.

SWIMS VALLEY DRIVE NW ATLANTA This kitchen is one of many distinctive spaces in this large, intricate European house designed by architect Tim Adams of TS Adams Studio and built recently by McGarrity-Garcia Residential Ltd. It conveniently adjoins a number of other purposeful rooms: a large family room, a breakfast room, butler pantry, and a private office.

ABO U T T H E

TS Adams Studio typically designs the interiors of its houses using as much thought and care as the exteriors, with wood paneling and millwork elements often flowing from one room to another. Together with interior designer Susan Bozeman, Morgan Creek Cabinet Company sought to preserve the architecture while adding strong features and distinctive details to enhance the design.

K ITC H E N

The cabinet finish is a creamy-white painted finish on a pine wood base. Susan Bozeman selected four-pattern travertine stone floor tiles, clear-glass pendants for the island, and colorful slate mosaics to back up the range. Morgan Creek designed and built a work table of antique oak with twist turnings and a parquet wood top that adds an informal touch.

BEVERLY LANE NE ATLANTA

This house began as a 1950s ranch with a typical post-war, knotty-pine kitchen. The clients wanted a complete transformation that better reflected their personality and modern-day lifestyle. The house had to feel serene and dignified without being pretentious. It had to put all those who entered at ease. It had to be about family and togetherness and privacy and intimacy. To reflect the soul of our clients, it had to be beautiful in a subtle, down-to-earth and natural way.

ABO U T T H E

The public space was designed as a single large, central living room surrounded on all sides with alcoves. Each alcove holds a specific function and surrounds the central living space like a cloister surrounds its courtyard. The kitchen is the largest of these alcoves. The proximity to the central living area means that the kitchen is close to the action while staying out of the way enough to remain functional as a professional chef’s kitchen.

K ITC H E N

Hand-hewn beams reinforce the intimacy and coziness of the kitchen. The walls have been thickened with the cabinetry and the built-in bench as though a cozy blanket has been pulled around the space. The colors, textures and materials are serene and natural. The bar is accentuated by the gentle glow of natural sunlight coming through the stained glass window.

The vision for this home on the Chattahoochee River was to create an elegant lodge and spa feel for overnight guests and parties. Remodeler and designer Judy Mozen, CR removed walls to create an open, entertaining space with a fantastic view of the river. Her goal was to design a kitchen where the caterers and guests lived in harmony but also kept activities separate. The idea of two kitchens was born when Judy huddled with Shirley McFarlane, CKD to create the main kitchen and the caterer’s kitchen supporting the home’s functionality.

The main kitchen cabinets, from Premier, in antique butternut with a rustic honey finish added elegance and warmth to the lodge. The peninsula overhang adds seating as it curves into the vaulted space of the living room. The island with its show-stopping countertop, serves as an auxiliary workspace. The caterer’s kitchen meets the demand of additional storage and cooking with charcoal gray cabinets complimenting the main kitchen but designating a separate workspace. FOR THE DESIGN AND DECORATION OF THEIR NEW OUTDOOR OASIS, AN ATLANTA COUPLE CHANNELS THE LATE, GREAT DOROTHY DRAPER

Not wanting this freestanding structure to look like a typical porch, designer Craig Duncan created an interior that was more like a formal space but still comfortable. Everything—furniture and fabrics included—was chosen for its ability to withstand the elements.

83

T

he late designer Dorothy Draper once wrote, “you need… courage to disregard stereotyped ideas and try out your own.” That has never been truer than in the case of a Buckhead couple who took a novel approach to outdoor living. Rather than attaching a long-desired porch to their house, they built a freestanding screened-in porch near the swimming pool. And eschewing typical outdoor decor in favor of something more glamorous, the homeowners and their long-time designer, Craig Duncan, turned to In The Pink, a monograph of Draper herself for inspiration. To begin the project, the couple turned to architect Norman Askins, who had designed much of the main house for them many years ago. Askins took inspiration from the architecture of the main house for the “Summer House,” as they refer to it. The Chinese Chippendale railing that surrounds the porch, for example, echoes that used in the main home’s stairway. But it’s the interior that is quintessential Draper, from the Chinese Chippendale chairs right down to its black-andwhite marble floor. Even the mirror over the fireplace channels the great decorator, its pattern reminiscent of a Draper-designed bookcase. For the color scheme, Duncan took a cue from his clients’ extensive blue-and-white porcelain collection as well as the azure hue of the pool. Fabrics in crisp shades of blue, white and khaki— all treated for outdoor use—were used for the upholstery, while accents of Chinese red were chosen for “pop.” The effect is both livable and luxurious, which explains why the homeowners use the space almost year-round. Duncan credits his clients with being the driving force behind the project, noting that their taste and knowledge forced him to step up his game. “I’ve learned so much from them,” he says, “and they’ve been influential in my work.” It seems that Dorothy Draper was right: When a talented designer and courageous clients join forces, decorating is fun! Duncan matched the black-andwhite marble floors—a Dorothy Draper hallmark—to those in the foyer of the main residence. The dining chairs’ crisp white Sunbrella fabric is the perfect foil for the chairs’ red framing and the built-in bookshelves with redpainted recesses.

Captivated by Draper’s interiors after reading a copy of In the Pink, the owners decided that the porch should evoke the late designer’s work. Bringing in the blue tones of the nearby pool, a graphic Lee Jofa fabric was used for accent pillows while a Manuel Canovas khaki-andwhite material was chosen because of the clients’ love of stark white prints. Duncan fabricated the Draper-esque mirrored overmantel by applying painted bamboo picture frame molding to a sheet of mirror.

THE HOMEOWNERS AFFECTIONATELY REFER TO THEIR FREESTANDING PORCH AS THE “SUMMER HOUSE,” BUT THEY USE IT FOR RELAXING AND ENTERTAINING THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

Dorothy Draper, Trailblazer In the 1920s, Draper started what is considered to be the first professional design firm in the United States. Some of her bestknown work includes The Carlyle and Hampshire House in New York City, as well as wildly colorful The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulpher Springs, West Virginia. Draper’s protégé, Carleton Varney & Associates, is conducting the first-ever Dorothy Draper School of Decorating this spring and summer at The Greenbrier. Remaining course dates for this year are March 25-30; April 29-May 4; and June 10-15. For details, visit dorothydraper.com. Some of Draper’s furniture designs are still manufactured by Kindel, and her fabric designs are being produced by Carleton V fabrics, available to the trade through Grizzel & Mann.

IN A CREATIVE ENCLAVE ALONG A TONY STRETCH OF PEACHTREE ROAD, ONE DESIGN FIRM’S STUDIO MIXES THE BEST OF TRADITION WITH AN INVIGORATING, CONTEMPORARY PALETTE

WRITTEN BY JENNIFER BOLES PHOTOGRAPHED BY DAVID CHRISTENSEN

Designers Will Huff and Heather Dewberry specified comfortable upholstered furniture, as well as striking art and accessories, to create a reception area as stylish as any residential living room. The sofa was purchased years ago for the designers’ very first designer showhouse room. Dewberry credits much of the success of her 11year design partnership with Huff to the fact that “we started together so young and we’ve grown up together.” The two are so instep with each other that they often return from separate shopping trips with the same fabrics.

89

left to right So that clients can look at color chips and fabric samples without distraction, the designers chose a neutral beige wallpaper for the conference room. Between the windows is a bench that once stood in the foyer of the home of their mentor, Dan Carithers. The conference table doubles as a dining table. Here, the designers mixed old and new pieces, including a bamboo runner, ikat salad plates, traditional gold-

banded dinnerware and vintage Asian animals. opposite Huff notes that “brown woods have so much life” when placed against the hallway’s light aqua walls, while Dewberry appreciates the hue’s ability to bring colorful accents like their collection of yellow porcelain into sharp focus. A Chinoiserie cabinet, purchased from a local antiques store, houses trim samples.

H

istory has a funny way of repeating itself—oftentimes when we least expect it. That was the case four years ago when designers Will Huff and Heather Dewberry, of Huff-Dewberry, Inc., were searching for studio space. When they learned of a vacancy in a charming Peachtree Road enclave, they leaped at the chance to rent it. But it wasn’t solely the space’s high ceilings and abundant natural light that enticed them to sign on the dotted line. The office had once housed the studio of Dan Carithers, the revered designer for whom both Huff and Dewberry had previously worked. For Dewberry, moving into their old office “felt like coming home.” Decorating their studio became an experiment in color as well as “an opportunity to show clients something bolder,” says Huff. Inspired by Albert Hadley’s use of aqua in his Manhattan apartment, the designers selected Benjamin Moore’s Antiguan Sky for the reception area and hallway, a color that Huff believes “acts as a backdrop like the sky.” For their respective offices, Dewberry chose lavender—a color with which she had never before worked—while Huff went with one of his favorite grassy shades of green. They did not, however, abandon neutrals. Beige wallpaper was selected for the conference room, proof that the creative duo is comfortable working in a range of colors and styles. Comfort is also important to these designers, which is why the office feels more like a chic Upper East Side apartment rather than a typical workaday space. Antiques and vintage furniture, contemporary art and thoughtfully chosen accessories are mixed in with the designers’ favorite upholstered pieces, while drawings, fabric samples and trims are cleverly stored out of sight in cabinets, drawers and baskets. But it’s not all work and no play at HuffDewberry. Inveterate entertainers, the designers are known for hosting lively parties in their office, including seated dinners, cocktail parties and the occasional baby shower. With their flourishing design business, Huff and Dewberry have come a long way since their early days in this space. Who says you can’t go home again? SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK. 91

left to right Dewberry’s office, the same one she had when working for Carithers, is a snappy mix of color and pattern, including lavender walls, a red-lacquered Parsons desk, Chinoiseriepatterned curtains and a leopard-print chair. In the corridor, this particular shade of aqua “turned out to be much more neutral than we expected,” says Huff. Also neutral is the office’s carpet, which helps to unify the contrasting spaces. Although Huff considers his favorite shade of bright green to be “soothing,” he admits that the color “needs to be broken up.” He did so by adding white trim to his office walls, which gives the effect of a paneled room.

THROWING CAUTION TO THE WIND, CREATIVE COUPLE CINDA AND MARK BOOMERSHINE GIVE THEIR HISTORIC BUCKHEAD HOME A FRESH POINT OF VIEW

For creative superstars Mark and Cinda Boomershine— an artist and fashion accessories designer, respectively—moving into their dream Buckhead home involved a bit of serendipity. They had eyed the 1920s Italianate Revival residence for many years and eventually put a note in the mailbox, expressing their desire to own it should the house ever be sold. One day they got the call and the rest is, well, history. In addition to the requisite plumbing and electrical updates required on an 80-plus-year-old house, other extensive renovations included excavating a basement to create additional studio and storage space as well as leaving no wall untouched—literally. If a room isn’t enveloped in a chic wallpaper pattern by the likes of Fornasetti, Kelly Wearstler or Schumacher, it’s painted a shiny, rich color. The key to the home’s successful interiors is that, instead of letting the formal architecture dictate a similar type of interior decoration, the Boomer-

shines juxtaposed it with their fearless yet elegant sense of style. With the rooms’ backdrops complete, the couple incorporated a mélange of family heirlooms from Cinda’s grandmother, mixed with items as disparate as chairs bought on eBay to the Murano glass chandelier in the dining room from Venice, Italy. As for their bold tastes, the Boomershines’ love of color and pattern extends well beyond their home life. Cinda is the owner of Cinda B, a wildly popular collection of handbags, totes, travel bags and accessories that have been featured on the Today show and in countless fashion magazines. And Mark—who studied Business Management as well as Fine Arts at the University of Georgia—is an accomplished artist whose work is represented in galleries in Atlanta and New York. Last year, he was one of just five artists commissioned by Swarovski to work on an exclusive art project that was featured in Harper’s Bazaar. Fearlessness, it seems, has its rewards. BRIAN PATRICK FLYNN GIVES COLOR, TEXTURE AND PATTERN FREE REIGN IN HIS FRIEND’S VIRGINIA-HIGHLAND CONDOMINIUM

Meredith Repp enlisted the help of good friend Brian Patrick Flynn for the redecoration of her Virginia-Highland condodminium. In the living room, Flynn adds instant pizzazz with a terracotta backdrop on the walls, while FLOR tiles in beachy tones anchor the space. “Meredith knew she wanted somewhat of a coastal feel with transitional style, and we executed both in unexpected ways,” says the designer. opposite Framed wallpaper swatches are cleverly grouped as eye-catching art in the eclectic dining room.

A gold medallion mirror was one of the duo’s many flea market finds, while baskets under the bench house “clutterables.” opposite The condominium’s energetic color palette was inspired by the dining room’s flamestitch FLOR tiles.

H

ome design TV guru Brian Patrick Flynn—formerly of TBS Movie & A Makeover, and currently the design producer of HGTV Design Star—doesn’t just play a designer and producer on reality TV, he is one in real life. When his real-life friend, Meredith Repp, visited his corporate apartment in Manhattan, she admired it so much that she asked him to work the same magic on her 800-square-foot 1960s VirginiaHighland condominium. Since Repp was instantly drawn to the flamestitch FLOR tile in Flynn’s New York living room, it became the inspiration for her own space and provided the perfect palette to cure her condo of its beige-ness. “The entire place was beige,” explains Flynn. “Beige makes me want to stab myself in the face with a dull fork,” he adds, subtly. Repp used the same FLOR tiles in her dining room, echoing their teal and seafoam hues on the ceiling and walls. The terracotta tone from the same tiles was used for the living room’s walls and ceiling. Flynn’s bravery doesn’t end with color. Also fearless in the face of pattern and texture, he had the wall behind the sofa upholstered in quatrefoil fabric. The condominium is also full of polka dots, zig-zag stripes and paisley patterns that not only peacefully coexist, but also manage to complement each other. Natural woven textures are worked in through the sofa, woven pendant and custom sisal rug. Since space is at a premium in the small abode, Repp parted with all unessential furnishings. She and Flynn found a small console at a favorite local flea market-style shop, Scarlett Loves Rhettro, and painted it turquoise. The console’s interior is used as storage for “clutterables” (remotes, DVDs, books and magazines), while the exterior is now a flat-panel TV stand. At Repp’s monthly cocktail parties, she simply moves a weathered wooden bench in the living room to the table for extra seating. In the dining room, Flynn—always resourceful and budget conscious—found a table on Craigslist and applied a coral lacquer finish to it. He and Repp bought the dining room chairs at Kudzu Antiques and painted them metallic gold. His background in TV production and set design has trained Flynn to keep things graphic and uncluttered. “I think of residential spaces as livable sets,” Flynn says. “My real-life spaces are much more warm and forgiving than the sets, though. That’s a big thing for me, warmth.” And it shows. There is, undeniably, a big warmth in this small space. SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK.

AN ENERGETIC APPROACH TO DECORATING TRANSFORMS THIS QUAINT CONDO FROM BLAND TO BOLD WITH FLYNN’S SIGNATURE MIX OF ECLECTIC COLORS AND TOUCHABLE TEXTURES.

Mid-Century touches, such as the swivel chairs, a lounger recovered in aged leather and a dovetaildetail walnut coffee table, add yet another layer to the unique space. 109

LIFE

WRITTEN BY

MARCIA SHERRILL

Ready, Set ... SPRING You know that I never met a fine antiques store or Mid-Century boutique that I didn’t like, but I recently had a spring awakening of sorts. After winter’s lingering doldrums and hibernating at home all winter, I needed color! Since my dogs are set on auto-pilot to destroy anything of beauty and value, and my teenage daughter and her pals have never seen a room they couldn’t wreck, I decided to arm myself with a smidgen of cash and hit the discount stores for a quick, pick-me-up decorating fix. I scooped up a beautiful new throw and a

112

half-dozen pillows at Target—all in shades of orange and yellow, the colors of spring. I was incredulous that these cool accessories were there for the grabbing. They were groovy. They were even on clearance. After quick strolls through Urban Outfitters, T.J. Maxx and Home Goods, I had mosaic vases, new picture frames and a fresh shower curtain. A trip to Ballard’s Backroom in Roswell turned up a beaded chandelier. My daughter, Anabelle, quickly claimed that she needed to completely redo her bedroom, so we kept going. She had

originally painted her walls brown so we stopped off at Benjamin Moore for purple and pink paint chips. Seems as though she had been bitten by the same decorating bug. We did opt for new linen bedding at the Restoration Hardware outlet in Dawsonville. And on the way back to town, we grabbed plants that were already in bloom from Home Depot, setting our sights on a garden effect. I am tracing a trellis on her ceiling and may paint some flowers on it, as well. Anabelle is an excellent photographer so she took

pictures of flowering blooms, which we blew up and had framed at Sam Flax. Soon her room looked like a bower. I may have gone from 2,000thread-count sheets and 18th-century Aubusson pillows to some with a dollop of polyester but, alas, my house feels like spring.
