WELCOME

You have no idea how ready I am for spring. I feel as though I’ve seen enough snow and ice this winter to last a lifetime, although I’m not entirely certain we’re clear of winter’s lingering shadow just yet. In 2009, we had two inches of snow fall the second week of March. In any case, this month’s cover image has me pining for warmer days, green gardens and extended hours of daylight—all of which are just around the corner. I love this time of year, if for nothing but weekly trips to the farmer’s market, hikes up Stone Mountain or walking along the new Beltline trails. Of course, none of these things are exclusive to warm weather, but it sure is a lot more fun to do them when the sun’s kissing Clinton Smith your skin. Here’s to spring! I Editorial Director twitter.com/clintonrsmith hope you enjoy it.

ON ICE Square, crescent-shaped, shaved—all ice is not created equal. Theron Gunter, Executive Director of Guy T. Gunter & Associates, a local purveyor of appliances since 1952, shares his thoughts on five ice makers created especially for residential use and the cubes they produce. U-Line “U-Line machines make cubes—1½ inches square—that feature a dimple in the tops.” u-line.com Scotsman “This produces cubes about the size of a small American shot glass. This ice is best for mixed and liquor drinks; because of its size, it melts more slowly than other cubes.” scotsman-ice.com Whirlpool “This is more of a chip ice; its cubes run approximately ¼ x 1 inch. It’s best for those who like to chew on ice or used for water and soft drinks. This ice is also found in KitchenAid and Jenn-Air ice makers.” whirlpool.com Sub-Zero “These cubes are similar to those of the Scotsman, but have a hexagonal shape. Again, they’re perfect for mixed and liquor drinks.” subzero.com Manitowoc “This company has come out with a flaker ice maker for the home that creates ice similar to the shaved ice found in snow cones.” manitowocice.com Guy T. Bar Basics—and Beyond “The perfect at-home bar should be inviting and attractive,” says Tony Conway, the CEO and owner of A Legendary Event, one of the city’s premier special events companies. “Besides wine and spirits, make sure you have a martini shaker, cocktails glasses, Champagne flutes, wine glasses

20

ATLANTAHOM ES MAG.COM

and martini glasses (I keep a couple in the freezer at all times). And I always suggest that you keep a supply of cocktail napkins on hand—linen are best! Conway’s Essentials: Vodka • Gin • Light rum • Scotch • Bourbon • Canadian whiskey • Dry vermouth • Campari • White wine •

Red wine • Champagne • Club soda • Tonic • Coca-Cola • Sprite or ginger ale • Lemons, limes and large cocktail olives. Conway suggests keeping an extra bottle of vodka in the freezer and advises against keeping Champagne in the refrigerator, as it will cause it to lose some of its body. “It only takes 20

minutes to chill Champagne with an ice bath,” he says. “Finally, it is always great to have little munchies for those late-night cocktails or that occasional friend who drops by.” Conway’s suggestions: Hard and soft salami and sausages • Carr’s crackers • Artichoke dip or any spread from Bella Cucina • Hard

cheeses • Shelled pistachios and cashews. And never one to forget the smallest of details, Conway offers up this final tidbit. “I love to keep bottles of beautiful Champagne or wine on hand with non-descript wine bags to have as departing gifts for my guests!” alegendaryevent.com

Naomi von Habersham from the desk of

There was a time when yours truly thought the height of sophistication was serving Riunite on ice. (Well, it was more sophisticated than the hooch consumed during my youth in Montezuma, Georgia!) Thankfully, Mr. von Habersham cured me of the habit by introducing me to that Rothschild wine. You know, Chateau Lafite? I don’t think there’ll be any of that at this month’s High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction, but I do know that some of Atlanta’s most fabulous oenophiles and tipplers will be there sampling the vino and raising those paddles at the live auction. Talk about a guilt-free hangover—the auction benefits the High Museum of Art. And speaking of the Wine Auction, I hear that a handful of generous patrons will be hosting Winemaker Dinners in their very own homes. These aren’t just any old houses, mind you. We’re talking manses decorated by the “Who’s Who” of Atlanta design. I thought about offering up my place, but it’s temporarily out of order thanks to an endless redo by a certain hot Buckhead designer. (You know who you are!) Although it’s late January as I write this dispatch from Aspen, I know where I’ll be on February 24. That’s the day Carolyne Roehm will grace the Ainsworth-Noah showroom at ADAC to discuss her new book, A Passion for Interiors. I better be careful, though. The last time I visited Hal and Winton’s showroom, my designer and I bought enough furniture, fabric and antiques to fill two containers bound for my Argentinian estancia. Fortunately, my tall, dark and handsome polo-playing paramour didn’t seem to mind. He just loved what I did in the bedroom with all of that Nancy Corzine fabric. (Wouldn’t you like to know!) I guess you could say that this past winter was good to me. Too good. I’ve gained ten pounds, and none of my fabulous Phoebe Philo pants from Céline fit anymore. I’ve just got to stop dropping by Eataly every time I’m in New York. Damn that Mario Batali! And the Bill Blass meatloaf that I served my guests up in Highlands earlier this month didn’t help my waistline either. Perhaps I should take up ballet á la Black Swan. Then again, maybe I’ll stick to Gyrotonics at Core. The social season is here—and I say bring it on! The spring clothes, that is. I saw some of you Atlanta gals at Paris Fashion Week, which means that I better get my wardrobe whipped into shape. I’m thinking of wearing Oscar or Carolina to next month’s Swan House Ball—always safe choices. Or maybe that black embellished Lanvin gown that looks so soigné on me. I mean, if those darlings Lovette Russell and Jack Sawyer are chairing the thing, you can’t just show up in any ol’ frock! (Editors’ note: Ms. von Habersham’s writings will appear from time to time when she has something to say, which we think will be often. Look for her future communiques in the magazine and on our website, atlantahomesmag.com.

STYLE ( on the rocks ) Fresh & French For her eponymous Westside Provisions District shop, Perrine Prieur “had everything in mind, right down to the concrete countertops and the burlap at the windows, and White Provision helped me build it out,” says the former sommelier at JOËL Brasserie. Indeed, the new boutique shop reflects Prieur’s lifelong vision to share her French Provincial-inspired concept with all. In addition to some 350 wines, the shop carries all manner of artisanal cheeses and meats, oils, chocolates and coffees, perfect for pairing with her expertly selected wines. What’s more, she offers weekly wine tastings and educational classes, all of which take place at the shop’s centrally located focal point—a 14-foot communal table. 5 THE RUSTIC-CHIC DIGS OF POUR WINE MARKET IN BROOKHAVEN BEGUILES BUYERS WITH DIVERSE AND WELLPRICED BOTTLES OF VINO (PLUS CRAFT BEERS) THAT THEY CAN SAMPLE BEFORE THEY PURCHASE.

Taster’s Pace The philosophy at Pour Wine Market and Tasting Room is simple, really. Co-owners Johnny McCall and Parke Lammerts want customers to “try before they buy.” That’s why this Brookhaven spot features an Old World-style

market on one side and a sitdown tasting room on the other. Pour specializes in affordable wines, predominantly priced within the $12 to $25 range, but also stocks craft beers. And if the affordable aspect weren’t enough to keep customers coming back, the atmosphere is just as appealing; Lauren Davenport of Davenport Designs Ltd. worked with the owners to create a rustic chic ambience, with recycled barnboard siding setting the tone. 1418 Dresden Dr., Atlanta 30319. Whether it’s real estate, fashion or fine dining, Buckhead has always been synonymous with luxury. But the community has recently experienced a resurgence as an interior design destination—and not just for the trade. In November, interior designer Kelly Anthony launched the shop-ashome lifestyle boutique Anthony | Wolf on East Andrews, the perfect complement to newcomers Scout, Vintage and BEE as well as longtime veterans Pieces, Boxwoods and Lush Life. Laid out like an airy loft—complete with bedroom, closet, bar, living and dining areas—a walk through Anthony | Wolf feels like stepping into one of your most stylish friend’s houses—except everything is for sale, including a line of swoon-worthy Leigh & Luca scarves, a rack of sculptural dresses by cult favorite Poleci and exquisite jewelry by Avindy. Anthony, also owner of the 15-year-old Wolf Design Group, believes the boutique will appeal to the “non-traditional but traditional-type people.” The designer’s own twists on tradition include a floating drum chandelier with hand-beaded crystals piercing its center; oneof-a-kind dog beds with linen upholstery and nailhead trim; and a pair of vintage, glam-inspired dome chairs. But more than the designer’s custom creations, it’s an incredible array of earthy-but-elegant accessories and the juxtaposition of traditional with the unexpected that speak volumes about her well-edited eyes. And a word about the artwork: Though the contemporary masterpiece “Hummingbird,” painted by her mother, Patricia Wolf, is for sale, don’t ask about “Donkey,” above the register. It’s one of Anthony’s personal favorites—and the only in-store item not for sale. 56 East Andrews Dr., Atlanta 30305. (404) 261-7778; anthonywolfcollection.com

KELLY ANTHONY A SNAPSHOT The designer and shop owner shares a few of her favorite things + My favorite places to shop are…Saks Fifth Avenue, K-La Boutique, Gucci and small, individually owned boutiques around the world. And always Bergdorf Goodman when I’m in New York. + When I go out in Atlanta, you’ll find me at…10° South, the restaurant my husband and I own. + My biggest splurges are…always on purses, shoes, travel and wonderful dinners with family and friends. + The best thing I’ve recently discovered is…kukees.com! They’re homemade cookies I found in Los Angeles that taste like cookie dough, only baked. They're free of preservatives and hydrogenated oils and have three grams of fiber, so I don't feel too guilty eating them! + I like to collect…purses, shoes and one of-a-kind friends.

+ The luxuries I’d never give up are…my moisturizer (seriously!) and my personal time—it’s sacred. + My heroes are...My husband, Justin, and Matthew Quinn of Design Galleria. They are both super-human! My parents: my mom, for being such a strong and talented woman; my father, who always called me a diamond in the rough. That [phrase] always reminds me that I can become something better and more beautiful, which is why I’m always aspiring. + What's your zodiac and do you think the traits of your sign affect how you approach design? Aries. And, yes, definitely! I’m adventurous and inventive, and my designs convey that. I juxtapose elements in unexpected ways, and I like the statement that high-contrast design makes. I’m also very energetic and enthusiastic, which is key to seeing marathon design projects through to fruition. Aries are risk takers. Opening a store in this economy was a huge risk, but I wouldn’t change a thing about what we’ve done! 27

Serpas True Food is located in an old cotton storage facility in the heart of Atlanta’s culturally rich Old Fourth Ward. Serpas is known for its “true food” approach to cuisine with an edge. Serpas has received local and national acclaim since its January 2009 debut and was named one of the 10 “Best New Restaurants in America” in 2009 by GQ magazine. ABOUT THE KITCHEN

Cruickshank Remodeling 1079 Alco Street N.E. Atlanta 30324

Located in the historic Candler Park area, this charming turn-ofthe-century home was saved from deterioration by the homeowner who fell in love with everything from the high ceilings to the original heart pine oors and brick replaces. Unfortunately, after numerous remodels and additions over the last 100+ years, the home’s original oor plan was lost, so the homeowner contracted with Cruickshank Remodeling to restore the home’s original structure and glory. After the basic restoration was complete, we focused on creating a kitchen that was traditional, yet had a little 1920s glam. We wanted clean, classic styling with a touch of sparkle--just like the homeowner! The new kitchen has modern appliances and user-friendly cabinetry features situated amongst beautiful traditional inset cabinetry. Because there was no breakfast room, we designed a multi-functional island which includes the main cooking element with downdraft, storage and comfortable seating. We also recon gured the existing oversized powder bath to create a wet bar and bulk storage, which added a highlyfunctioning space centrally located between the kitchen and formal dining room. Maximizing every inch, we created a classy little wet bar with a wine cooler and bar sink, a wall-to-wall storage pantry, and a new, beautiful powder bath with custom marble lavatory.

ABOUT THE KITCHEN

Home Rebuilders 1629 Monroe Dr. Atlanta 30324

Located in the heart of Ansley Park, this year’s kitchen project was completed several years ago. Its timeless design with craftsman yet modern details tips its hat to the architect and homeowner who came to Home Rebuilders with his design plans. It included a larger addition to the back of the house that added not only a spacious new kitchen but new family room as well. The whole house was renovated to bring it up to today’s modern needs. The plan on the main oor included a new mudroom and pantry where coats, groceries and school bags and books could be dropped. The mudroom/ pantry area exits to the driveway and makes unloading kids and groceries easy. Warm wood accents compliment the modern details of stainless appliances, sleek hardware and contemporary hand blown pendants. A stained oak island as centerpiece has furniture like legs, stainless banding and granite top. The design is open and generous for cooks and entertaining and at the same time opens up the kitchen to the back yard allowing plenty of light to ood the space. Don’t miss a few fun details like the full wall chalk board by the back door, as well as the river stone laid like tile to form a doormat at the back door entrance. And don’t miss the beautiful family room with many wonderful details.

ABOUT THE KITCHEN

Diversi ed Cabinet Distributors (DCD) 5250 Brook Hollow Parkway, Norcross, Ga. 30071

This kitchen is literally the heart of this gracious new home in Sherwood Forest. Its central location, opposite the casual dining area, and adjacent to the cozy keeping room and wide open family living space, allows it to shine as the focal point for this young, active family. The homeowners turned to Gary Dresser of Dresser Homes to build this traditional brick two story. Gary brought in Jeff Reed and DCD to provide cabinetry. The kitchen, naturally, was the main design element. After reviewing the home’s architectural plans, a classic raised panel door style from Shiloh Cabinetry’s inset collection was selected. The nish for the main kitchen is a warm soft white paint with subtle slate highlighting. The focus is the matching cabinetry hood with arched valance, corbels and display shelf. The island, meant to give the appearance of ne furniture, is in a rich espresso stain with black glaze. Here the kitchen’s ability to function really shines, as the island includes a pull out trash bin, roll out shelves, vertical tray storage, cookbook shelves and a place to hide special occasion items tucked away in the knee space. Attention to detail is apparent throughout the design with varied depths, stacked moldings, and elegant legs for the island. Stainless appliances, bold granite countertops, and satin nickel xtures and hardware complete the polished look. Now that they’ve moved in and the dust has settled, this family is nally getting to enjoy their beautiful custom home with a marvelous kitchen at its heart.

ABOUT THE KITCHEN

Design Galleria 351 Peachtree Hills Ave. NE Ste. 234 Atlanta 30305

The original cherry kitchen was state of the art in its day; but 25 years later, it needed an update. The new kitchen is roomier and boasts Wm Ohs Cabinetry in both a paint nish and a custom stain on walnut. Typhoon Bordeaux Crème granite, a La Cornue Chateau 150 range, and a Custom antique brass awning hood are complex and beautiful features that weave into the textural landscape. Hand laid brick walls, a rough sawn hemlock ceiling and reclaimed wide plank oak oors give this kitchen a timeless feel and very rich visual texture. The artistcommissioned antique brass plaque behind the range is a Southern Live Oak tree, which has special meaning to the homeowner.

S UP P LIERS Cabinets – WM OHS Countertops – Bordeaux Creem - Marmi Natural Stone Backsplash – Brick

More notable features are a beautiful custom apron sink made from the same granite as the countertops, a striking twist on an old favorite. There is also an automated TV lift hidden in the countertop; under counter refrigerator drawers; miracle corner hardware; and glass front cabinetry with beveled glass and custom mullions. A charming corner breakfast nook with a custom bench and underneath storage house raised dog feeders in a matching nish, with granite tops and rolling/locking casters.

Tile – Laundry room from Renaissance Tile

To provide a more useable space for entertaining, we moved the lateral hallway to the back of the house. The pantry and laundry area moved behind a charming kitchen alcove that houses an extra wide breakfast bar, a SZ refrigerator and a hidden doorway entrance to the utility areas. The anking display cabinets are lit to highlight the homeowner’s prettier glassware. The new kitchen feels very warm and inviting with large work areas and a comfortable mix of both new and old materials with current state of the art equipment.

Dovetail Homes www.dovetailhomes.com

This home is designed with Southern Charm in mind. When designing the spaces and colors we sought warmth and lots of storage. Whether getting kids out the door to school or catching up with old friends at the center island, the goal to ensure both form and function won. The cabinets themselves are based on custom built inset cabinets with all the special hardware features you come to expect in a modern kitchen. The nish is painted with touches of glazing for a bit of used charm. Similarly, the added island depth allows for a mix of both granite and hardwood counter tops With plenty of height, we use every inch of wall space to bring the cabinets to the ceilings and allow for glassed front upper cabinet for decorative appeal and extra storage. On the storage front, extra spaces are provided in the island’s side for deep drawer access and under the sitting bar for those infrequent seasonal needs. The kitchen is the centerpiece of the home and the balance of the home takes its queues on color and design from it.

ABOUT THE KITCHEN

CSI 6527 Jimmy Carter Blvd. Ste. C2 Norcross 30071

When our homeowners purchased this home, they inherited a white on white on white kitchen with peeling cabinets. They wanted to remodel the kitchen immediately to bring it up-to-date with new appliances, improved functionality, and a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. The kitchen space was adequate but underutilized. We a put 5-burner gas cooktop with a 42” hood on a long angled wall with added cabinet storage and counterspace, putting the cooktop closer to the sink for convenience. Lots of storage features were incorporated, including a pullout trashcan near the sink, drawers for pots and pans under the cooktop, and rollout shelves inside base cabinets. The refrigerator and microwave/oven cabinet were placed together on the back wall where they would not interfere visually with the openness of the space. We modi ed the pantry opening and replaced the door with matching cabinet doors to disguise it. Outside the pantry, a small buffet with glass-fronted wall cabinets acts as a server for the adjacent dining room. A striking feature that the homeowners really love is the new table extension for everyday family meals. This table lls wasted space, connects with the family room, and completes the kitchen. A wine storage unit is tucked neatly beneath it. We used rich cherry cabinets in a dark chocolate nish by Schrock in a Craftsman style for a simple, yet elegant look and topped them with Santa Cecilia granite. Lighter oors in oak and travertine tile on the walls are a nice contrast with the dark cabinets. The homeowners now have a stunning new kitchen that welcomes friends and family.

ABOUT THE KITCHEN

Home Forge Remodeling 111 New Street, Suite A, Decatur, 30030

This newly designed kitchen opened up two areas to create a wonderful space for family dinners as well as parties. It unites the side entrance and stairway with the existing kitchen space to bring in more light and useable space to the heart of the home. The rst challenge was removing the wall separating the kitchen from the side entrance, mudroom and stairway. The new open design allowed better ow while expanding the kitchen. Relocating the cooking range from the island to the wall improved the functionality of the workspace — the expanded island gives the kids a great place to focus on homework while sharing time during meal preparation. With the old wall removed, the kitchen looks out over the breakfast room and the wonderful windows beyond to the back yard. New windows improved the view and the energy ef ciency of the room. The classic custom cabinets with inset doors are packed with new features and create a warm kitchen feeling. The oversized appliance garage accommodates all of the countertop small appliances in one place. In addition to new core appliances, we included a separate freezer drawer and an ice maker to accommodate any party. The 48-inch range is ready for the largest menu. The new microwave oven drawer is a great feature for snacks or meals. A farmhouse sink brings charm to this inviting space. The nishing touch is the striking Electron granite which draws together the cabinets and backsplash. A classic subway tile backsplash gets a splash of color with the inset steel tile behind the range bordered in bright red. This kitchen is the perfect marriage of timeless styling and updated features. Finally, and extraordinarily important to our busy homeowners, the entire renovation only took four weeks to complete, from the day the water was turned off in the old kitchen to the day the owners were cooking dinner in their new space.

ABOUT THE KITCHEN

Morgan Creek Cabinet Co. www.morgancreekcabinets.net

In uenced by travel, the homeowners razed their 1950s Ranch and built their vision of a Mediterranean home. With designer Samantha Minutelli, architect, Norris Broyles & Associates, builder, The Macallan Group, cabinet makers, Morgan Creek Cabinet Company, the homeowners began to turn their Mediterranean vision into a reality. The homeowners envisioned a large, European-style kitchen open to the home’s living room and gallery. Minutelli’s challenge was to marry a European, pieced-together-over-centuries, aesthetic with a traditional, American lifestyle. Minutelli worked with Sean McNeish of Morgan Creek Cabinet Company to create cabinetry that combined the form and charm of a rustic, European country house with the function and elegance of a modern, American kitchen. The three walls of cabinetry were designed as separate “pieces” that together create the desired “whole.” The cabinetry that frames the kitchen’s large window was designed to resemble an antique European cupboard. It also functions as the main sink area and conceals the dishwasher and trash pull-out. The seeded glass and exposed hardware complement the antique-in uenced design. The homeowner’s devotion to the European ideal was such that they designed a “Service Kitchen” and a “Butler’s Pantry” to house the more utilitarian but necessary appliances. They are great entertainers, so the separate spaces and additional cabinetry for silver, china and serving platters were a must. They also wanted a special room for their dogs complete with built-in crates and retractable gates between the dogs’ room and the kitchen that can be hidden away in a specially designed chase behind the kitchen cabinets.

ABOUT THE KITCHEN

HammerSmith 807 Church St. Decatur 30030

Choreographing this kitchen was about composing and relating spaces, layers and materials. The goal was to enrich the daily routine of the clients. We explored movement: visual, spiritual, emotional as well as physical. We wanted to create more than a typical kitchen, family room, bar and dining room. We wanted to create magic and excitement. We wanted to thrill and surprise. We wanted our client to live brilliantly. We invite you to enter this space and experience graceful curves and linear axes; looming ceilings and lofty vistas; rich, vibrant color and muted tones. One is drawn in by intricate details and distant spaces partly obscured by evaporating walls. The ceiling, at once low and dark, opens to reveal soaring light; blind corners give way to surprising sights with ever changing light. Black metal, stainless steel, stone and glass contrast on every scale -- from large vertical and horizontal slabs to tiny mosaics of stainless, stone and mirror tiles. Muted walls and washed driftwood cabinets wrapped in marble and granite create a masterful contrast that keeps this kitchen grounded while pushing the limits of serious design. Come, linger, meet the HammerSmith team, and experience this magical kitchen.

Insidesign Perimeter Place, 1231 Ashford Crossing, Atlanta, 30346

From the very beginning of the project, challenges were readily apparent. The client had recently purchased a spec home that was aging and had a very disjointed layout. They came to Insidesign wanting to modernize the look of the interior, and also reshape the oor plan to allow for more ease of use and access. Architect Steve Kemp of Kemp Hall Studio was brought in to totally rede ne every aspect of the home. Steve created a home rich in the “new traditionalism” style that has its roots in classical design elements yet brings forth a new and fresh edge to them. The designers at Insidesign carried that design theory into the creation of their new kitchen. First, the layout had to be simpli ed so friends and family could interact within the space while not interfering with the homeowner’s preparations of special meals. Next, walls were moved and opened up exposing a grand view through the dining room and out into the newly landscaped exterior. This gave the illusion of the kitchen being a much larger space than it actually is. Finally, a functional pantry was built into what was once an awkward corner of a room. Clean and simple elements like lightly stained cherry cabinetry, white granite and glass tile were chosen for a warm and fresh, yet casual look. The color palate was kept simple and carefully extended out into the rest of the home to give everything a cohesive feel. New interior doors of matching cherry wood were incorporated throughout the home and white walls are pronounced to highlight the homeowner’s art collection. The end result is a classic, yet clean look that will provide years of enjoyment and interest.

ABOUT THE KITCHEN

Inspirations Kitchen & Bath 1250 Alpha Dr., Alpharetta, Ga. 30004

This elegant new kitchen is the heart of the Whitlock family home located in Sandy Springs. Kitchen designer Michael Bell and Interior Designer Kenneth Knight collaborated to create this inviting kitchen that provides professional functionality while also serving as the center for entertaining and family activities. Having worked with the Whitlocks for two years, Kenneth had an intimate knowledge of their style and function preferences, which were incorporated into the design. This modern family had outgrown their existing kitchen. The new kitchen was expanded by relocating it into the space that was previously the breakfast room and screened porch. New large windows ood the kitchen with an abundance of natural light and a beautiful lake view. The new breakfast room (the previous kitchen space) now includes a beautiful desk and grand hutch that serves as the pantry. The transitional style of the kitchen utilizes the clean lines of ush-inset cabinetry nished in a luxurious white with a light pewter glaze. The custom mantle hood over a 48” range with glass mosaic backsplash creates a strong focal point for the kitchen. Each of the windows is anked by cabinets with glass side panels that allow natural light to ow into the cabinetry. The generous walnut island with a rich nish and scalloped ends enhances the elegance of the kitchen and provides abundant seating for informal entertaining. The kitchen was out tted with professional appliances integrated into the cabinetry, and numerous storage solutions can be found throughout. Marble countertops along the perimeter are accompanied by a unique granite on the island. The nal touches of this transitional design include distinctive lighting xtures, a crackled ceramic subway tile backsplash, and polished nickel faucets and hardware.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER Inspirations Kitchen & Bath is a complete home resource center and design studio with a team of designers that create kitchens and baths of high quality, beautiful design, and value for households of all cultures and taste. Rose Hall 1062-D Johnson Ferry Rd, Marietta 30068

“I love Country French” is what this homeowner expressed to Anne Cicconi, Designer at Rose Hall Kitchen Galleria. “Oh, and I love to cook!” The plan evolved with those two priorities in mind. The challenge was to take a small, non-functioning kitchen/laundry space and transform it into one conducive for hanging out with the family or entertaining clients with room to spare! A wall was removed uniting the kitchen and laundry into one large space. The long rectangle was then divided into zones where prepping, cooking, storage, seating and even laundry duty can be performed easily. Once the function was established, the attention went to aesthetics to establish the authentic French feel. A color scheme of French vanilla, nutmeg and apricot translated into the furniture grade cabinetry, richly textured brick wall, and large scaled paisley draperies. Bold touches of black were added in the custom designed hood, hand-forged French drapery rods and hardware. The attention to detail didn’t stop there - window seats were added, the back door was replaced with a rustic wood and iron charmer, the windows were painted to mimic antique iron window grates, the island lighting is provided by forged iron French lanterns illuminating ladder-back barstools - even the laundry area has a whimsical touch to it.

MOSAIC Group

2358 Perimeter Park Drive, Ste 300, Atlanta Ga. 30341

Recipe for a dramatic kitchen – Take 1 part rolling Northwest Atlanta environs, 2 parts replica 18th Century home, and blend with a 21st Century family of ve, MOSAIC Group, TrueSource Cabinets, and a lot of Southern-style devotion! The kitchen solution entailed (after altar offerings to the history gods) opening the space up to one “great” kitchen – the laundry was relocated to another space and the vestibule was drafted into service. The result – a spacious, light-drenched 20 x 26 kitchen that even incorporates the family dining table in addition to the large rectangular island anchoring the space. Out came the oak strip ooring and in went gorgeous antique heart pine wide plank ooring. Au revoir to the tired cabinetry and design, and bienvenue to nely crafted custom Omega inset cabinetry from TrueSource Cabinets. TrueSource and MOSAIC Group’s design team honored the client’s wishes and the elegant simplicity of the original architecture. The inset cabinet style, the antique ooring, the matched windows and millwork, and Brazilian Green soapstone countertops all contribute to a certain homage paid to another era, while allowing the new space to accommodate today’s lifestyle needs. At the end of the day, having a stunning Wolf range and a Sub-Zero beverage and wine center tucked into this “vintage” kitchen is really the best of both worlds!

These homeowners loved the home they purchased 10 years earlier. But with the happy news of a rst baby on the way, they knew it was time to do a major update to accommodate their growing family. They did their research, including attending the Junior League Tour of Kitchens, where they toured a recently updated kitchen by Distinctive Remodeling Solutions. They liked what they saw and found that their philosophy for their renovation matched that of Mark Buelow, President of Distinctive Remodeling Solutions and his team.

S UP P LIERS Cabinets – MasterBrand/Kemper Flooring – Moda Floors & Interiors

The original design of the house con ned many of the areas to tight spaces, so the whole house renovation required some creative design solutions. Both the Kitchen and Master Bathroom were completely reworked to create more ef cient spaces. The kitchen is the heart of the home with an adjoining den area that creates one continuous space. The cabinet and storage capacity, as well as the counter top space were all greatly expanded. A kitchen that once had a small table area, now uses the entire expanded space for an island with a sink and a full height oven tower. Cherry cabinetry in a cinnamon nish is complemented by granite countertops and a backsplash of 6x6 tiles in a warm neutral. The elegant new island in cream, is given architectural interest with raised paneling and corbels that support the granite counter top in a deep hue. All new appliances in Stainless Steel accent with a nod to the contemporary.

Catalysts for Community Change rom founding some of the mainstays of the community – like the Atlanta Speech School and the Atlanta Children’s Shelter – to supporting already established organizations like the American Red Cross and Grady Hospital, the Junior League of Atlanta has had a monumental impact on the community for 95 years. This year alone, either by raising money to support JLA efforts or working directly with community organizations, active members will collectively give more than 120,000 volunteer hours to improve the lives of women and children in metropolitan Atlanta.

Kattia Easterly has been a proud member of the JLA since 2001. She joined after fellow member Alicia McCabe introduced her to some members who shared the wonderful things the League was doing. She credits Alicia with being a great sponsor and mentor in the League. Because of that early relationship and mentoring, Kattia has forged her own influential path both in community positions in-League positions. Like many members of JLA, Sarah Ann Corbin decided to join shortly after relocating to Atlanta as a way to make new friends. From her first role as a provisional advisor to her current one as director of fund development, Sarah Ann says she has gained so much both personally and professionally from the League. She looks forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones at meetings, and learning from an amazing group of women. To her, the sky’s the limit for what you can learn in the JLA if you choose to.

Nineteen years ago we started our party with a handful of winemakers from Napa Valley and two from the Central Coast. As some of you may remember, it was a blast and such a happy experience for those who had never attended a charity wine auction that they called it “Atlanta’s Best Party” and have been coming back ever since. And thanks to lots of friends like Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, our event has just gotten bigger and better. Our notables the first year were winemakers from California. Since then the California winemakers have been even more numerous and notable, and they’ve been joined by some of the great names in winemaking from Oregon, Washington State, France, Italy, Germany, Chile and even Australia. And Atlanta’s fabulous chefs have been joined by great chefs from all over the Southeastern U.S., as well as from California, France and Italy. It’s not just winemakers and cooks who make our scene. Last year you could have bumped into or hobnobbed with Jennifer Nettles of country music fame; Morten Andersen, all-time leading NFL scorer; Monica Pearson, longtime WSB news anchor (and High board member); Mike Luckovich, AJC award-winning political cartoonist; and even one of the world’s great museum directors, our own Michael Shapiro, wandering around looking for advice on what wine goes with Dali—for an answer, ask the man in the straw hat. It’ll be the same but different this year under the leadership of two beautiful ladies, co-chairs Louise Sams and Michelle Sullivan, with their special guests. We have tweaked the format a bit, as usual—for one thing returning to the tents in Atlantic Station for our Auction Eve festivities. But you’ll find that the main ingredients of our party will be the same—great food, great wine and all accompanied by foodies and wine-bibbers having a great time, which after all, is what it’s about. Thanks again to all who make this blast possible—the wine industry folk, chefs, corporate sponsors, benefactors, all-star guests and all you party-goers having a grand old time. Cheers, Dick Denny

Our Special Friend-in-Wine Joy Sterling Iron Horse Vineyards Joy—our Joy! Always a joy and always ready with a “YES!” whenever we ask. Thank you Joy for being our joy throughout the years. For those of you who don’t know, Joy represents the second generation of her family’s Iron Horse. Growing up in Paris (might have had something to do with her LOVE of bubbly), Joy received an extraordinary education in the appreciation of food and wine, and a love of quality wherever it is found in the world. Après Yale University, where she studied history and economics, Joy turned to journalism and then became Deputy Bureau Chief for ABC in LA. After success there, the home fires struck and she returned to the family’s business—in the Green Valley appellation of Sonoma County. She assimilated into the role of sales guru, spokesperson, and general Bubble Diva! In November 1985, the White House selected Iron Horse Sparkling Wine for the President’s toast to peace at the first summit meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev in Geneva. Ever since, Joy and her Iron Horse have never looked back. Quietly taking up the reins in 2006, having spent 20 years traveling on behalf of the winery, Joy is now the face of Iron Horse. And we are mighty glad for that joyful face. Welcome Joy! We thank you. Again and again!

Our Special Guest of Honor Michael Browne Kosta Browne Winery At the very first taste, almost everyone falls in love with Kosta Browne Pinot Noir. It’s magic. It’s expressive. It’s multi-dimensional. And, we’ve heard that it can dance! Michael Browne moved to Sonoma County in 1987 from Washington State with the goal of becoming an architect. Little did he know that working at local fine dining establishments (to pay bills) would lead to a very successful, world renowned career in winemaking and viticulture. Much later, in summer of 1997, Michael teamed up with Dan Kosta to make the dream of winemaking a reality. A couple years after their first vintage, Michael and Dan’s proven passion and vision for the future of Kosta Browne lead them to Chris Costello, who, with savvy business experience and connections, aided in acquiring the monetary resources necessary to grow the business. Together these three owners, along with the most recent addition to the team, Sam Lando (who brings a contagious “joie de vivre” and enthusiasm to Kosta Browne’s sales and marketing), continue to nurture relationships with the best growers and it shows as they consistently show some of the best New World Wines being poured today. “The Boys of Kosta Browne”, as we lovingly call them, have been tried and true to the High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction for years. So, for their commitment, support and their ultimate, world-class Pinots, we raise our glasses high!

Although many homeowners dream of purchasing a second home on premium waterfront property, this client was an exception, says Atlanta architect Keith Summerour. “The setting is so beautiful, it’s like we created a second home that’s actually a main house,” he says. And thanks to a sweeping front lawn with magnificent views of Long Island Sound, a five-and-a-half acre landscape that was restructured to save ancient fruit trees, and an indoor pool with sliding-door walls that open to the outside, this French Normandy-style beauty is indeed a “first” house that would blow any ordinary vacation home out of the water. Built for a young family relocating to Greenwich, Connecticut, from Atlanta, it was the homeowners’ connections to the Atlanta design community that solidified their decision to use some of the city’s finest talents that included Summerour as well as interior designer Beth Webb and Jeremy Smearman of Planters, Inc. Because Summerour had worked with the couple on a renovation of their Buckhead home in the past, they were eager to employ the architect’s expertise again when it came time to build their dream home from scratch. As for Webb, despite the fact that the husband—a constantly on-the-move businessman—is an avid arts and antiques collector, he and the interior designer were in constant contact as he purchased items that struck his fancy during his travels in London and Holland. Webb’s main objective? To create a home that wouldn’t be too hands-off (or paws-off ) for the couple’s three children, dogs or guests. To that end, she was not only charged with creating elegance in an unpretentious way, but also with striking a fine balance between the clients’ tastes and needs. It was no small task, considering some of the owners’ preexisting items included works by Picasso and Matisse, as well as pre-Columbian antiques. But just because their tastes tip toward the elegant doesn’t mean the clients were looking for an overly accessorized, formal house. “[The homeowners] are not a

more-is-more couple; they’re not about a lot of stuff,” says Webb. “This is a very curated space because that’s how they like to live.” You won’t find a formal dining room in this house, for instance; instead, the couple opted for a combination sun room-family dining area, complete with a built-in banquette, farmhouse table and hearth. The room was designed by Summerour to act as a balcony of sorts. One of the architect’s favorite design elements, because of its connection between family and entertainment, is this room’s arched interior window; overlooking the indoor pool below, it can be open or shut. And unlike many homeowners looking for a master on the main, this couple wanted to be on the same floor as their young children. To suit this active family’s needs, though, Summerour designed the entrance of the master as a massive walk-through his-and-hers closet. Equipped with large islands, built-ins and window seats—and designed much like a kitchen in terms of functionality and aesthetics—the inverse layout “is the most practical way of laying out a master suite,” Summerour says. “When you think about coming and going, the last place you go from is your closet.” When it came to choosing a color palette, the homeowners were equally as practical, opting for a neutral backdrop to soften the footprint of their family and constant stream of guests. And although this is a house built for the needs of a growing family, it’s also a house in which every square inch of space is used, Webb says, whether it’s in the library—where the well-traveled kids (and dog) relax among antiques including a desk owned by Gianni Versace—or the high-traffic family room, where a custom-designed rug by Eve, Inc. is surrounded by kidfriendly furniture from Bernhardt. “The house is very livable and humane,” Webb says. “It’s well-edited but also happens to be tactile, soft and user- and kid-friendly—and will stand the test of time.” SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK. On the stairway landing, a Paul Ferrante chandelier is the perfect complement to stalwart steel window frames by Crittall. Lamps by Linda Horsley Antiques. Tables from Robuck & Co. Curtain fabric, Rose Cumming. The homeowner found this hundreds-of-years-old

One of Summerour’s favorite design elements in the house was the combination sun room-dining area, which boasts an arched window overlooking the indoor pool below.

Vivre ONE OF ATLANTA’S LANDMARK HIGH-RISE RESIDENCES IS THE EMBODIMENT OF THE GOOD LIFE, COMPLIMENTS OF DESIGNER JOHN OETGEN

WRITTEN BY HEATHER J. PAPER PHOTOGRAPHED BY ERICA GEORGE DINES PRODUCED BY CLINTON SMITH

For this home at The Mansion on Peachtree, designer John Oetgen created an elegant atmosphere, with a touch of his trademark “whimsy” thrown in. opposite Against the otherwise neutral scheme, a single red silk pillow grabs your attention. “I think there’s nothing better than a black suit with a big, ol’ brooch on it,” Oetgen explains. “You can change that brooch every day; it can be rubies and diamonds one day, sapphires and emeralds the next! That’s all a pillow is. It’s a brooch for the room.”

111

T

The address tells you that this is a home at The Mansion on Peachtree, a Rosewood Hotel & Residence. But a sweeping glance of this high-rise retreat makes you think twice. It feels more like you’re in Manhattan, in one of those marvelous prewar apartment buildings on the Upper East Side. Perhaps it’s designer John Oetgen’s generous use of black-and-white marble, reminiscent of the black-andwhite lobby in New York’s Carlyle Hotel (and, ironically, another Rosewood property). Or maybe it’s his use of wooden Venetian blinds, which lend a sense of permanence to the place, much like being on Park Avenue. But Oetgen denies any specific references to New York. Rather, his muse was simply to find the soul of this space. Here, that translates to “elegant,” with a touch of the designer’s trademark “whimsy” thrown in for good measure. That’s apparent from the moment you step through the front door into foyer; what could have been a mere passthrough is, instead, a gallery-like experience. Glamorously trimmed with black crown molding and baseboard, the long and narrow hallway is punctuated with original photography by the designer himself. “I felt like it needed windows,” Oetgen explains. “I’m a photographer, as well as a designer, and in the middle of this project I was in Paris, where I took all these pictures. Each one is ‘framed’ by a picture of a stuccoed limestone vent hole with a metal grate in the center. I’m the old-fashioned kind of photographer who cuts and pastes, so I literally cut out the grate in the center of each photograph and inset other photos—like the Luxembourg Gardens, the Mona Lisa, a tiger print I saw in the window of an antique shop, a marvelous arrangement

JOHN OETGEN A SNAPSHOT Designer John Oetgen opened his firm in 1973 and, to this day, continues to create stunning spaces that are a little unexpected and a lot of fun. + The styles I’m most drawn to are…the best of any period. I also love a great sense of architecture, be it cozy and cottage-y or massive and monumental. And I love psychologically different feelings. In any one home, I want a room that hugs you and a room that makes you feel “free.” A sentimental room and a lively, entertaining room. I think a good environment should offer a full smorgasbord of emotions. + What continues to inspire me is…travel. My favorite place to visit is Paris. + My favorite place to shop is…New York. + When I go out in Atlanta, you’ll find me at…Anis. Or any of the classic restaurants, like LaGrotta. Or maybe at a party at SCAD; I love to support SCAD. + My biggest splurges are always on…books, art and furniture—and really good restaurants! + The best thing I’ve recently discovered is…the color grape. My friend Duvall has introduced me to the world of grape. + I like to collect…books and art. And restaurant memories. + The luxuries I’d never give up are…breath and a heartbeat. I think they’re pretty much luxuries! + My heroes are…the artists that changed the world. Vermeer and da Vinci. Picasso and Kandinsky.

clockwise from above In the foyer, a light fixture that Oetgen found in Paris shines beautifully against a ceiling medallion painted a beautiful shade of sky blue. Bathroom fixtures from Renaissance Tile & Bath are elegant in their own right, but finishing touches like this Venetian mirror up the ante further. Just outside the bedroom, a quiet sitting spot is softly illuminated by a pair of purple glass hurricanes. One of the works of art created by Oetgen himself. opposite Upon entering this residence, guests are met by this impressive antique clock, topped with a blue mercury glass sphere to make it even more of a focal point.

The dining room furniture consists simply of two 48-inch black marble Saarinen tables surrounded by Georgian chairs. And the lack of art on the walls is intentional. “I wanted it to feel spacious, make it a place where you could have amusing, theme-oriented dinner parties,’ Oetgen explains. “That’s why there’s no art in here.” Serpentine candleholders are the perfect counterpoint for the much-more-straightforward-in-style gilded étagère that Oetgen found at Parc Monceau. “It’s almost like a piece of sculpture,” he says, “so I continued that feeling by making ‘sculpture’ out of the china—almost like how Chihuly or Brancusi work with forms.”

of Christian Dior chairs, a view of the ocean while sailing to Paris on the Queen Mary. So you’re transported from an architectural, structural point of view into a fantasy world. And perhaps that’s what this residence is, going from an architectural fortress point of view into somewhat of a fantasy world!” Fantasy or not, the comfort found throughout is very real. The living room, for instance, is very intimate, thanks in large part to a strategically placed screen. “This is a vertical space—it has nice tall ceilings—so I brought the height down a bit, creating a horizontal line with a Chinese handpainted screen,” Oetgen explains. And that same screen not-so-coincidentally separates the living room from the adjacent bar. “I love the idea of seeing the window (over the bar) above the screen,” he adds. “But I didn’t want to see a kitchen counter, which is the bar.” On the other side of the bar, the formal dining room is “smallish by grand standards,” says Oetgen. “But I wanted it to feel spacious, make it a place where you could have amusing, theme-oriented dinner parties. That’s why there’s no art in here.” Instead, the walls themselves take on an artistic quality; the designer had the wallpaper cut it in blocks, then applied like limestone blocks. “It sort of mirrors the exterior of the building,” he notes. “Plus, it elongates and visually expands the size of the room.” But it’s the heart of this home—the kitchen and family room—that truly speaks to the aforementioned New York vibe. Those Venetian blinds? “I saw this marvelous light coming in, and I wanted to use Venetian blinds to calm it down and not make it so fancy. I wanted the feeling of a bistro,” Oetgen explains. As for the black-and-white marble floors here, it wasn’t so much The Carlyle that inspired him as it was Vermeer. “I’ve always loved the paintings of Vermeer,” he says. “There’s always a window on the left, a maiden of some kind and always those great Dutch blackand-white floors.” He may have been inspired by one of the Masters. But when it comes to design, Oetgen is a master in his own right. SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK.

A simple, unassuming breakfast table is surrounded by chairs upholstered in a sturdy indoor/outdoor material. Given the natural light flooding the room, Oetgen used wooden Venetian blinds at the windows “to calm it down and not make it so fancy.” opposite Grounded by black-andwhite marble floors, this kitchen—and the adjoining family room—are at once casual and elegant, comfortable and chic. No detail has been left untouched, right down to the hardware from the Matthew Quinn Collection.

Flower photographs by Murphy Townsend. Jean de Merry chandelier through R. Hughes.

121

ALTHOUGH THE HOME’S ROOMS ARE ELEGANT, THEY OFFER COMFORT IN A VERY REAL WAY.

This room’s understated elegance is due, in part, to the fact that Oetgen used just one pattern throughout—a subdued paisley found on the window treatments as well as the headboard and upholstered bedside tables. The master bedroom is glamorous in an understated, European way. “The bed isn’t piled with millions of pillows; it’s just simple,” says Oetgen.

122

ATLANTAHOM ES MAG.COM

The guest room has the feeling of an uptown studio apartment, one you’d be hard-pressed to leave. An iron bed, made by Charles Calhoun, is decked out in an Ikat pattern that’s echoed throughout the room. But color adds another layer of comfort to the room; Oetgen used a warm hue on the walls, sky blue on the ceiling and pops of coral here and there.

LIFE

Amanda Nisbet Marcia Sherrill chats with a designer whose collections of fabrics and lighting have the design world abuzz

INTERVIEW BY

MARCIA SHERRILL

DIDN’T WE HEAR THAT YOU ARE A SOUTHERN BELLE? There certainly is that rumor floating about. I did attend boarding school in Virginia, my husband and I lived in Atlanta for a few years, and sometimes—after a few glasses of wine—an acquired Southern accent seems to emerge. But, in truth, I’m Canadian, born in Montreal. YOU’VE APPEARED ON STAGE AND ON SCREEN. AS AN ACTRESS IN NEW YORK, WHAT DID YOU LEARN THAT INFLUENCES YOUR DESIGN WORK

The creation of an environment and experience has become indelibly transferable. Whether as an interior designer or an actress, I draw upon the wherewithal to provide a scene, evoke a mood and affect one’s life in a long-term, positive manner. And, as always, no matter what, the show must go on! BACK TO THE SOUTH FOR A MINUTE. IS YOUR HUSBAND SOUTHERN? Perhaps this is the source of the rumor. My husband is, indeed, 100 percent Southern, hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina! HOW IS IT DIFFERENT RAISING A FAMILY IN NEW YORK THAN IN, SAY, ATLANTA? It’s easier in the sense that you can have anything under the sun delivered straight to your residence, and since 99.9 percent of the time you’re on foot, you really don’t have to mess with car seats. YOUR WORK IS SO MODERN AND YET CLASSIC. IS THIS A WINNING COMBO? It’s what comes naturally to me, and my clients seem to think so. Knock on wood that it continues! WHAT JOURNEY LED YOU TO DESIGN FABRIC FOR HOLLAND & SHERRY, AND WHAT IS SIMILAR ABOUT YOUR TWO AESTHETICS? I was fortunate to have been approached by them. (It must’ve been all those trips to the D&D building in New York!) The line is represented at Travis & Company in Atlanta. Our similarities are apparent through the depth and twists of the color palette we selected. YOUR TODAY?

FROM TOP: AMANDA NISBET’S OWN LIVING ROOM. A FIXTURE FROM HER LINE WITH THE URBAN ELECTRIC CO. THE DESIGNER AT WORK. FABRIC FROM NISBET’S LINE WITH HOLLAND & SHERRY.

LIGHTING COLLECTION IS SO ELEGANT. DID YOU HAVE TROUBLE FINDING QUALITY DESIGNS?

Thank you, that is very kind of you. I had no trouble finding the designs; as they are each my own, they had been lodged in my mind for some time. It was more about allowing the creative floodgates to finally open, letting the deluge happen, becoming excited about the ideas being released and watching them evolve. HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR LIGHTING COLLECTION’S HOME WITH THE URBAN ELECTRIC CO.? I couldn’t imagine going anywhere else. I’ve always admired their quality and how beyond fabulous a company they are to work with. WHAT IS GOING TO BE YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR UPCOMING LINENS COLLECTION? At heart, I am a devotee of solid white sheets but the urge to add a touch of color was something I couldn’t resist. The line will use color in a sophisticated fashion and will make linens more personal. WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE IRREPRESSIBLE MS. AMANDA? Stay tuned for new additions to our product lines, and something extra special and addictive in the realm of social media. amandanisbetdesign.com
