Depression has many faces.

What is your child’s telling you?

If your child has been struggling with feelings of depression, you may be interested in learning more about a clinical research opportunity. The Engage clinical research studies are being done to find out if two different investigational drugs are safe and effective for children and adolescents who have major depressive disorder (MDD).

Your child may be eligible to join an Engage clinical research study if he or she: • Is 7 to 17 years old • Has been diagnosed with MDD or has been having feelings of depression If your child participates in an Engage clinical research study, the study will last for about 10 weeks and will include about 9 study visits. All investigational drug will be provided at no cost, and you may be reimbursed for your time and travel expenses.

Here, we talk to Dr. Giesler about Atlanta Smiles & Wellness, giving back, family life, and her favorite places to frequent in town.

I was in the process of selling my practice in Houston while living in Vinings and commuting back and forth to Houston. After two years of an extensive commute, I did not want to commute any longer. At the time, my husband, a radiation oncologist, was working on the south side of town. One of us had to be close to home and our children. I wanted to be involved in the community my practice was in, and our kids until recently, grew up in the Vinings and Buckhead communities.

Atlanta Smiles & Wellness has served the Vinings/Smyrna area for almost 20 years. What made you decide to start your dental practice in this community?

I graduated from The University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston in 1991. Fifty percent of my class was female. Statistics are showing that women are approaching the 50/50 ratio of entering freshmen in dental schools.

Dentists who are 35 years old and younger now show the largest gender change.

Many people have a very real anxiety of dental procedures. We believe women are naturally more sympathetic and nurturing to those concerns. Our team is always striving to make our patients feel comfortable and reassured with a smile, laughter, and the highest levels of hospitality, all while being extremely competent and professional.

You and Dr. Kovitch have a unique approach to delivering care to your patients. What is your philosophy?

We believe in a conservative approach to dentistry. We have many tools to not only check for decay, but to really assess the depth and degree to which it has penetrated a tooth. Along with digital X-rays, we have high-tech devices such as laser fluorescence detection and transillumination equipment. Cosmetic dentistry is an art. There are many different aspects, possibilities, and combinations of treatment options that we consider for every patient.

How do you define what you do every day?

In what ways does your practice serve the community?

We change lives. The best way I can describe it is a blend of biomedical and structural engineering with a paintbrush—a combination of artistry and architecture. Dentistry is not just drilling, filling, and restoring holes in teeth. You have to be artistic. You have to be willing and able to see different shades, shapes, and colors while designing a treatment plan that will have the best prognosis and longevity. Dentistry is extremely rewarding. It truly is an amazing feeling to make a difference in someone’s life and see them look in the mirror for the first time and see the smile they have dreamed of for so many years.

We participate in and contribute to many charities and foundations in the community, along with local schools, churches and temples. We sponsor events in our community and we recently held a women’s self-defense evening.

How has the community been a benefit to you and what’s it like raising your children in Vinings/Smyrna?

Q

What restaurants, shops, and workout facilities in Vinings/Smyrna do you frequent often?

The area has proven to be a wonderful place to start a family. There are plenty of parks and playgrounds within walking distance, tons of family-friendly activities, and restaurants. Plus, we’re a quick drive away from Marietta, Sandy Springs, Buckhead, Midtown, and Downtown Atlanta. I couldn’t imagine a more convenient location for a young family.

Dr. Kovitch and her husband are definitely foodies. This is obviously a great neighborhood for good food.

One of my favorite restaurants is Muss & Turner’s and Eleanor’s [the restaurant’s hidden bar] for a date night.

The Crafty Hog is perfect for a fun evening out with the kids and drinks with friends. Shopping is a breeze here because you can usually find a shop that has what you need within a one- to two-mile radius. And, of course, we love the fact that The Home Depot here is probably the best in the country.

Over the last 30-plus years, Smyrna’s Mayor Max Bacon has watched his humble hometown grow into a vibrant destination for

Bacon ran for city council in 1971 and his father served as Smyrna’s mayor in the 1970s and 1980s. “Two pieces of advice he gave me,” Bacon recalls. “First: ‘You’re not gonna win the first time you try.’ Second: ‘If you do win, you better have a tough skin.’ Well, he was wrong on the first count and right on the second!”

Bacon asserts that one of the most important characteristics of a public servant is the ability to shake it off. “There’s a lot of pressure—I’ve been mayor for three decades now. I have faith in the things I want to do. I wouldn’t swap this for anything else.”

“The last four years of my dad’s life, we were very close. I didn’t have any aspirations to be mayor until he died. It just happened—I ran, and the rest is history. I followed a guy outside after a meeting one night and told him, ‘I know you’re upset.’ He said, ‘Mr. Bacon, I wouldn’t put up with anyone talking to me the way I talked to you in that meeting.’ I told him, ‘It didn’t offend me, because it’s passion. If you have a serious issue, I’ll be at your door the next day.’ We have that hometown feel—but we’re 55,000 people strong now.”

Adam Zimmerman is living a baseball dream. After 16 years with CSE (formerly Career Sports & Entertainment), most recently as president, he was hired by the Atlanta Braves as their vice president of marketing in January 2016. “I had a fantastic opportunity to join the storied Braves franchise at a remarkable point in its history. To be a part of closing Turner Field and opening the new SunTrust Park—it doesn’t get better than that,” he says.

Why did you want to join the team during their transition to SunTrust Park?

I grew up near Tampa, Florida—that’s where the Toronto Blue Jays held spring training. There were no pro baseball teams there then, so my dad and I would watch the Braves. Like a generation of Southerners, the Braves were my team growing up.

It’s great to come full circle by working for them now.

What is the most exciting aspect of your job for the Braves?

What brought you to Vinings before your move to the Braves?

I’ll give you an example—you can use our app to buy a game ticket. Then you can purchase your parking on the app. Input your zip code and it will choose exactly what parking lot will be most convenient on your route to the park. Our app has an interface with Uber, too, so the driver can find you instantly.

I’m a Civil War buff. The importance of Kennesaw Mountain as a strategic battleground is fascinating to me—its altitude, the river, the railroad. I came to explore and fell in love with the village.

I had the chance to move to One Vinings Mountain and I’ve been there a few years now. I’m a runner and enjoy the trails here, too. I go with friends to Canoe—it has a phenomenal outdoor bar. I also love Paces & Vine in Vinings Jubilee. And when I need a Guinness, Meehan’s Public House hits the spot.

I’m responsible for the brand—all things digital and fan engagement. This park was designed for Georgia. It’s very “homey,” with awnings, huge fans and wide breezeways. Its design has the highest percentage of seats closer to the action than any other ballpark in Major League Baseball. I’m excited to bring technology into that mix.
