Robyn McGhee and daughter Amara McGhee opened RAG thyme salon to provide a multicultural hair care experience for their clients. The Aveda Concept Salon offers a spa-like setting with plans to expand its space and its services.

B
y the time Amara McGhee turned 6, she knew she wanted to be a hairstylist. So when the highschooler saved $1,500 from working as a salon assistant, she was ready to put the funds toward opening her own hair salon. “Being a stylist has
always been her dream,” says mom Robyn McGhee. In addition to the money she had saved, Amara received an inheritance from her grandfather. But at 16, she still needed her mother’s help to launch a business.
An important focus for the co-owners has been to develop a multicultural salon where L TO R: AMARA AND ROBYN MCGHEE stylists are available to work on all textures of hair. Growing up biracial (her mother, Robyn, is white, and her father is black), Amara was always challenged with finding the right hair solutions for her tousled tresses. So she found herself hopping from one stylist chair to the next. Thus, Amara’s vision for her salon was specific—it had to offer hair care for all like sew-in weaves and keratin treatments.

Additionally, the duo decided that RAG thyme should be an Aveda Concept Salon. Since Amara’s previous assistantship had taken place at an Aveda salon and Robyn had used the products for a decade, it naturally made the most sense. “Aveda truly is an experience; it’s not just a brand. It feels good. It smells good,” Robyn says. Plus, the brand’s eco-friendliness, customization and give-back initiatives won them over as well. As for the salon’s name, the co-owners chose RAG in honor of Robyn’s father, Robert Albert Germany, whose monetary donation served as an investment in the salon. And “thyme” recognizes the health benefits of the herb and is on brand with Aveda’s plant-based products. The 1,100-square-foot shop is filled with a fun and diverse staff. “It’s [about] creating that dynamic team and having the right vibe,” Robyn says. “I’m so fortunate to be able to say, ‘This team works.’ They’re multicultural; they feed off each other’s energy.”

For Robyn, the logical move was to purchase a salon where Amara could continue her work as an assistant and begin training at the Aveda Institute. In February 2018, the mother-daughter team took over an underperforming, eightchair salon in Austell and set about transforming it into RAG thyme salon. “She’s very driven,” says Robyn, who works as a nanny in the daytime. “I just made her dream come true.”

Many former professional athletes turn to coaching as a way to stay connected to their passion. Former Atlanta Braves minor league pitcher, Richard Sullivan was able to turn to art. The player’s fluid watercolor portraits and paintings adorn the walls of SunTrust Park, the Omni Hotel at The Battery Atlanta, and Mercedes-Benz Stadium. From a close-up of Hank Aaron moments away from swinging the bat, to Bobby Cox chatting on the mound, Richard’s paintings make viewers feel as though they have quietly slipped into a private world only players occupy.

It’s a world Richard can paint so clearly because it’s one he’s experienced firsthand. While his professional baseball career didn’t begin until he was 21 as a junior at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), it’d been a lifelong hobby. He spent five seasons with the Atlanta Braves and shared locker rooms with first baseman Freddie Freeman, outfielder Jason Heyward, and more. As a kid, baseball always came first, but sketching was a close second. “Art was always something I’d do naturally. If I had downtime, I would pick up a pencil and draw,” Richard says. As his years on the team began to wind down, art began to take center stage as his next great love. In 2014, he went back to SCAD to finish his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration. He decided to pursue painting full-time at his Louisville, Kentucky studio and stayed in touch with the Atlanta sports scene. While playing is something he misses, he relishes the opportunity to stay connected with the game. “I miss it every day. I think that’s why I’m painting so many athletes right now,” he notes. “Creating artwork and working in watercolor, in particular, makes me feel alive the way playing baseball did. I love waking up every day and working on something new and exciting.” Today, he routinely visits the city to see friends and watch the Atlanta Braves play in their new home. Natalie Keng thinks food gets people talking. “Food is a gateway,” she explains enthusiastically. “We all love to eat, right? In the Chinese culture in particular, people connect through food.” She sees breaking bread with others (or, as she says, “breaking egg rolls!”) as a simple act that can have far-reaching implications. Natalie and her mom, Margaret Keng, have made it their mission to encourage strangers to come together to exchange ideas, to create a sense of community—all while learning to cook. “Even with the craziness around us these days,” Natalie explains, “we think it’s important for people to sit down, eat great food, and talk about family and history and community.” Their business, Chinese Southern Belle, offers cooking classes at The Cook’s Warehouse, on-site food demonstrations for private or corporate gatherings, and Asian supermarket tours.

Countertop Basics All About Granite & Quartz
• Granite is a natural material. It is mined, and like any natural rock, there are variations in the appearance of the slabs. It can stain or crack if care is not taken, and it must be sealed periodically. • Quartz is a manufactured product, and therefore has a more consistent appearance than granite. Quartz is made from quartz dust and resin, so it is nonporous and requires no sealing. We are seeing a migration away from granite, as many clients tell us, “I want something different.” While the starting price point on granite is lower than on quartz, there is a much wider price range on granite. Granite pricing is generally based upon availability/scarcity of the stone. Where the stone is quarried also affects the
pricing, as granite that comes from deeper beneath the earth’s surface makes it more rare and more costly. You may be wondering about marble. Marble is much more porous than most granite, and therefore requires more vigilant maintenance and sealing. Today’s quartz offers an extremely realistic marble visual and is much easier to take care of in a heavyuse area like a kitchen, so many homeowners choose quartz. Design Tip When choosing countertop colors, consider your kitchen’s lighting. If your kitchen has little or no natural light, select a color that has a significant amount of white, gold or light-colored specks. Dark colors like deep blue, mahogany and black look best in areas that receive substantial light.
