wning a Mercedes-Benz automobile was out of young Dietmar Exler’s reach in his native Austria. “My biggest interest when I was like 18 or 19 years old was getting a ride and keeping it running—because I was a little

short on money,” the personable Exler chuckles as he recounts those days.

At that time, a career in the automotive space was not even a consideration. But his position as a consultant, first for global management company McKinsey & Company in nearby Germany, ultimately became his gateway to management at Mercedes-Benz over a decade ago. In 2016, that “short on money” boy from Austria assumed the president/CEO position of Mercedes-Benz USA, which had recently relocated from New Jersey to Georgia. Even before his big jump to CEO, however, Exler, who was then vice president of sales, had a say about where the company was going and was gung-ho about the move to Atlanta.

“Atlanta was pretty much the number one choice for everybody,” he explains with his notable accent. “For me, it was the logistics—it was the airport that allows us to get everywhere, including Europe.” The ample construction industry was also a win for him. “It’s a growing town with a very positive vibe,” notes Exler. “Things are going up everywhere.

That’s exciting.”

And so is the Falcons stadium bearing the iconic brand’s name and, equally important, Mercedes’s anticipated 2018 move to its permanent 200,000-square-foot Sandy Springs headquarters at Barfield and Abernathy Roads near Highway 400. “We are pretty enthused about it,” Exler says of the new headquarters site, where the company broke ground in early fall 2016. With state-of-the-art conference rooms, a gym, on-site childcare, plenty of space for collaboration and more planned, who can blame him? The specter of Atlanta traffic can’t even dim his enthusiasm.

“It’s a little bit like moving from being a renter to a homeowner. It’s your own place. Not that this is a bad place for temporary offices,” he continues, referring to their present digs in the Perimeter Mall area. “It’s very, very nice. We have no complaints about it. But, if you own your own place, it’s a little bit different.”

“You guys call it Southern hospitality. I learned what that means,” he smiles. “After we came here, we had a lot of companies call us and say, ‘Hey, anything we can do to help you?” He comments. “People are just friendly and very nice here.”

There was no hair and makeup for that show. It was real, and that’s how I wanted it to be,” Allen reveals.

find the dress of her dreams in her renowned Roswell Road shop, Bridals by Lori, people feel compelled to approach her. “They’ve seen my story, and they thank me for sharing it. Then they ask me how I’m doing,” says Allen, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 and decided to allow TLC, the network behind her beloved television shows “Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta” and “Say Yes to the Dress: Bridesmaids,” to film her throughout her diagnosis and recovery.

The award-winning docu-series, “Say Yes to the Cure: Lori’s Fight,” encouraged Allen to begin traveling the country advocating for mammograms and early diagnosis.

realized that maybe there was a reason for all of this. I have a huge women’s platform, and it’s very important for me to share my story.”

Fortunately, after a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, Allen remains cancer free and has been able to return to her first love: Bridals by Lori. Allen was only two weeks out of college when she opened her original 1,000-square-foot shop with 25 dresses, which was located across the street from the current 25,000-square-foot bridal boutique that has become a tourist destination over the last several years. “And I love the Sandy Springs community. They supported me before TV, and they’ll be here with me after TV. They are the truest fans. And when I opened that original store, I would never have imagined everything that has happened. It’s been a crazy ride.”

three decades, Hunger traveled the world as a global vice president of sales and marketing for several manufacturing and distribution companies. Tired of constantly being away from home and family, he recently traded in his business suit for a bike helmet as the new president of ElectroBike Georgia. Hunger has opened the state’s first ElectroBike retail shop in Brookhaven, with more shops soon to follow.

Eric moved to Sandy Springs in 1975 with his parents and brothers. After graduating from the University of Georgia, he married Sandy Springs native Beth Suttle, and the two settled in the Huntcliff neighborhood where they raised two daughters, Alexandra and Caroline. An avid outdoorsman and ALTA tennis player, Hunger is now discovering the fun

of recreational cycling as well as the convenience of bicycle commuting.
