How Rocco Sinisgalli built an award-winning remodeling co

hen Rocco Sinisgalli began Oneida Builders, Inc. in 1997, he was a one-man show. He would arrive at the job wearing contractor garb, but as soon as the owner was out of sight, he’d change into work clothes

to tackle that day’s projects. The homeowner would return to progress, assuming Sinisgalli’s crew had labored throughout the day. Little did they know, it was Sinisgalli himself tackling one job after another.

Today, over 20 years later, Sinisgalli is no longer construction’s Clark Kent. Instead, the owner and president of Oneida Builders, Inc. delights in managing various teams. “I have great people that work with me, from administrative to marketing, to estimating, to design and carpentry. Not a lot satisfies first thing in the morning like a hot cup of coffee, but the easy chemistry that co-host Maurice “Moe” Mitchell brings to “The Bert Show” comes pretty close. In early 2018, Bert Weiss saw the Brooklyn native’s comedy videos online and invited him to interview for the co-host position with Q99.7. And on May 1, 2018, it was official. A little over a year later, the 33-year-old comedy writer, stand-up comedian and podcast creator nods to the platform that has helped him impact about a half million people each week in Atlanta.

“Every time I hear about how I help people, it’s a beautiful thing,” says Moe, who got his start four years ago on the comedy stage in New York City. “When I first got onto the show, it was hard for me to open up and speak about being abused as a child. But I did. And when I did, I realized how many other people were struggling with being afraid to talk about it.”

There’s a lot of power in releasing that type of trauma and finding the freedom [to be able to talk about it]. For me, that was the beginning point of realizing just how powerful the platform and my voice really was.”

He plans to continue using that platform to share stories that just might help make the world a better place, starting right here in Sandy Springs. “It makes it a lot easier to perform on air when you know that the community has your back,” says Moe. “That embrace has truly made what I do worth it.”

As for comedy? He won’t ever stop. His next show is on July 18 at City Winery.

Dancing and music have been a passion for Jan Collins since the time she discovered she could stand up and tap to a tune.

This high-energy dynamo explains how her mother instilled in her a love for performing.

“I grew up surrounded by all the arts. My mother was the head of the English Department at Roosevelt High School and was a fabulous drama coach, too.” When Jan waltzed off to college (literally) at the University of Georgia, her skills as a marching band majorette and concert band oboist earned her a scholarship.

After college, Jan taught high school English, drama, and speech. She and her husband, Bill, an orthopedist, planted roots in Sandy Springs and started a family.

Jan brought her passion for the arts to the area, embracing every opportunity to become involved with arts programs. She’s served on the boards of the Alliance Theatre and The Atlanta Opera, but she says her recent involvement on the board of the Sandy Springs Arts Foundation, raising funds for the popular new Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center, and as a co-founder of the City Springs Theatre Company is her pride and joy.

After Jan’s husband passed away five years ago, a friend convinced her to be a contestant in the Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia Chapter’s “Dancing Stars of Atlanta” ballroom dancing fundraiser. She laughs, “I didn’t win, but I stayed on my feet!” Now, Jan attends tap dancing classes every week for exercise.

“Supposedly tap and ballroom dancing deter dementia,” she says. “Your brain works hard to send the dance routines all the way down to your feet.”

Morbid Obesity: Weight Loss That Works

A

major focus of our practice is the treatment of morbid obesity. Morbid obesity is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of at least 30kg/m2. BMI is calculated by weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.

Today, obesity has reached epidemic levels in the United States, and also in developing countries.

The cause of obesity is multifactorial and includes a complex interplay of energy-rich diets, limited physical activity, and hormonal, psychological, and genetic factors. There are many associated illnesses of obesity. These associated illnesses affect essentially every organ system.

Before

The cardiovascular system is affected by high blood pressure, diabetes, ischemic heart disease and peripheral vascular disease, high cholesterol, strokes, and venous insufficiency. The respiratory system is affected by asthma, and obstructive sleep apnea. Gastroesophageal reflux, fatty liver disease, gallstones, and colorectal cancer affect the gastrointestinal system. The musculoskeletal system is affected by osteoarthritis, back pain, and disc disease. The neurologic system is impacted by pseudotumor cerebri, carpal tunnel syndrome, and depression. The reproductive system is affected by polycystic ovarian syndrome, fetal abnormalities, prostate, ovarian and breast cancer. With such an exhaustive list of various illnesses, one can clearly appreciate the fact that obese patients are at an increased risk of early death compared to their aged-matched control cohorts with normal body mass index.

The treatment of morbid obesity therefore requires a multidisciplinary approach as well as, close follow-up and a willingness to adapt and combine treatment modalities. In our practice, we employ surgical and nonsurgical options. Patients must demonstrate that they have failed diets and other weight-loss programs before we offer surgical options.

Our pharmacologic treatments include Phentermine, Phendimetrazine, Qsymia®, Belviq®, Contrave®, and Saxenda®. Our endoscopic treatments include the gastric balloon and endoscopic plication. Surgical options are generally employed when less invasive modalities have failed to achieve significant weight loss. We offer the laparoscopic or robotic vertical sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and duodenal switch. Our patients are enrolled in a nationwide database, which provides valuable information that leads to best-practice standards. Our minimally invasive approach leads to a quicker recovery, less pain, less scarring, and improved cosmetic results when compared to the open approach.

After We realize that such a recalcitrant disease requires vigilance and persistence at therapeutic interventions. Patients who initially lose at least 50% of their excess weight may regain a significant amount of the weight loss. Without long-term monitoring, patients who initially were considered cured of their associated illnesses may redevelop their associated medical conditions. Revision surgery is an option for patients that are willing to accept the risks of reoperative surgery and pledge to adhere to a healthy lifestyle and behavior modification. Unfortunately, the perfect treatment option for all morbidly obese patients does not exist. Areas of research include hormones, bacterial flora of the colon, endoscopic devices to limit absorption of calories, medications that enhance energy expenditure and procedures to alter the digestive anatomy. How do I know what waterproofing system will work best for my basement?

A

Water that enters a basement through or underneath a poured concrete or block foundation wall can usually be resolved with either an interior or exterior waterproofing system.

Exterior systems involve Derek Ritchie excavating and replacing the original foundation drain. Interior systems involve developing a trench from inside the home and providing a pathway for water flow under the basement slab. Most customers prefer the lower cost and lifetime warranty of the interior system, while others prefer to simply manage the water from the exterior.

Solid hardwood consists of a singular piece of wood that is sensitive to moisture and must be nailed to a wooden subfloor. How do you lift concrete without impacting the surrounding structure?

A

The lifting process is minimally invasive, done by injecting either Portland cement and agricultural lime or polyurethane under the concrete. The material you choose fills any void and then starts to lift. This injection process is continued until the desired height is achieved.
