Our speakers have amazing-yet-practical home gardens. On March 30th, they’ll present what they’ve learned about growing food at home.

They’ll also be judges in a Raised Bed Garden Design Contest where mini-gardens will be created for you to stroll and gather inspiration for your own home vegetable patches. The gardens will be built by local landscapers and garden groups and you’ll have a chance to have your vote counted in the “Popular Vote” award. To make this event complete, there will be garden vendors and food trucks.

Silver City Farm was chosen because we’ve got a weakness for barns, timber framing, and wide open fields. The Soil3 Garden Show will be held in the old-fashioned saloon (sorry, no alcohol this day) that resembles a hybrid barn-saloon. You’ll see when you get there and you’ll love it. The presentations will be in the saloon and the wide open field will host the vendors and raised bed exhibitors. This is the perfect place for such an event! As gardeners are a sturdy lot, we’ll be there rain or shine. If rain, we have giant tents on stand-by. Please come spend an inspiring day with us.

S

uzanne Cypert says that one of her favorite things to do is to take the stairs to the third floor of the large athletic club she manages and stand at the railing where there’s a view of the two floors below. “I love the busy times of day,” she says, “when there are lots of people in the club. I look down and see them working out and having fun and being happy. And I think to myself, ‘Ahh. This is so good.’”

Suzanne has worked hard to get where she is, graduating from The University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Public Relations and then proving herself as a go-getter in the field of health-club management.

She was snapped up by Wellbridge Clubs 32 years ago, managing their properties all over the United States. Then, in 1999, she took over one of biggest the feathers in Wellbridge’s cap—Concourse Athletic Club in Sandy Springs.

Now that Atlanta is buzzing with Super Bowl LIII excitement, the sports fan describes her perfect winter weekend. “I love to cook,” she says. “It’s my life-balance therapy.

“I

love the way living in Sandy Springs connects you to the outdoors,” Lauren Fernandez says as she describes the community where she lives.

“My husband, stepdaughter and I are fortunate to live along the Chattahoochee River—it made so much sense to us to settle somewhere that’s this invested in nature. We spend a ton of time at Morgan Falls Overlook Park in our kayaks.”

Lauren came to Atlanta 16 years ago to attend Emory University, where she earned Master of Business Administration and Juris Doctor degrees. After making a name for herself in the world of restaurant brand development, she co-founded Origin Development Group, offering her legal and marketing know-how to “young” restaurant brands.

But one fledgling brand in particular caught her eye several years ago— Chicken Salad Chick. “What drew me to it was that it was started by a female entrepreneur, Stacy Brown, and its core clientele is women.

That means a lot to me,” Lauren says. “When I look for opportunities, I need a philosophical and moral alignment with people I work with. There’s enough to deal with in business without having to trip over whether another person has integrity or ethics. From the beginning, I really liked Stacy’s story—and her recipes! I’ve been very proud to be part of that brand’s exponential growth.”

Lauren spends a lot of time driving from one Chicken Salad Chick location to another (she owns the franchises in Atlanta, Augusta and Athens). “I try to be as hands on as I can,” she explains. “When you have high-performance expectations, you have to be shoulder to shoulder with your employees. Restaurants are not about food; they’re about people. If you don’t get that ‘people piece’ right, your restaurant won’t be successful—I don’t care how good the food is.”

Lauren isn’t just passionate about marketing food, though. She’s also concerned about hunger issues in her community.

“When I was young, my grandmother, who is Cuban, would take me to volunteer at a bilingual food pantry. After I moved to Atlanta, she told me, ‘You need a food bank!’ That’s when I discovered the Atlanta Community Food Bank, where I’ve volunteered for years. My grandma is so smart!” TheChickCaters.com
