A

shley Miller has landed in a music lover’s paradise. An insatiable music aficionado and voracious reader, Ashley works in the Creative Studios at Sewell Mill Library & Cultural Center, a so-called “library of the future.” As one of the library’s senior assistants, she plans programs for teens—potential young authors and musicians. “I lucked out when they were choosing staff,” she says, “and James Mitchell, the manager, picked me to run the music programming here.”

The gorgeous 28,000-square-foot facility, opened in 2017, blends colorful children’s and teen spaces, a computer room, recording studios, an art gallery, art classrooms, an outdoor amphitheater, a black-box theater and, of course, a state-of-the-art library.

“The creative studios have computers for making digital art, practice rooms for music recording, podcasting and video editing. There is a video studio with green-screen professional lighting and cameras and there’s a studio with recording software and musical instruments to borrow when you’re here. And it’s free,” she explains. She came up with an Open Mic Night once a month to bring in performers of all ages to experience some time up on the stage. “I tell people it’s an opportunity to perform in a casual, welcoming environment. The majority of participants are teens with very little experience. Each time they come back, I can see their crowd interactions and performance skills improving. We have a great variety of performers with experience as well, and I love seeing them talk to teens to offer advice and encouragement. You should see the looks on the kids’ faces.”

She’s also excited to work with local authors, like novelist Laura Silverman. “Our author events allow kids to rub elbows with possible mentors,” she says. As for working with teens every day, Ashley chuckles and says, “I’m used to their attitude—I get along with them really well.”

During time off, Ashley loves to peruse used-book stores with her daughter, Bella, and husband, James—especially the Book Nook in Marietta. “It’s basically wall-to-wall books. It’s a reader’s paradise! And I like heading to Good Food, right across from the library, for lunch. They have a fun vibe, with good music and lots of fresh food choices.”

has D’Huyvetter grew up in East Cobb and clearly knows a thing or two about what East Cobbers want to eat. His popular restaurant, Moxie Burger, opened in the Paper Mill Village in 2011, and has been touted as one of the top five best burgers in Atlanta.

Chas ponders what he thinks is Moxie’s appeal: “The cuisine is obviously important, but it’s all about quality and execution. I wanted to elevate the humble burger. That’s why we do a thicker burger and cook it to order. I want you to taste the quality of the meat. We want to make food that people are excited about. And it’s East Cobb, so it had to have a family-friendly vibe.”

Now, Chas and his partners in the business (there are three Moxie locations), Jordan Pearl and Brandon Eisenhardt, have decided to branch out. He laughs when he explains, “Moxie’s got a girlfriend now—La Novia [“girlfriend” in Spanish] Taqueria—right around the corner in the mall.” He says this new venture is bringing East Cobb some moxie of a different flavor. “This food is completely opposite of Moxie,” he says. “We don’t cook your burger at Moxie until you tell us how you want it cooked. But with the Mexican menu at La Novia, brisket is the best-selling item and it takes 10 hours to cook! Both places use high-quality ingredients, made with care. I can create a recipe, but unless my kitchen cares enough to execute it properly, it’s not going to work. It’s all about great food, but the environment—with the staff feeling like they’re part of the family—that’s the backbone of the restaurants.”

After college, Chas got his start with a large restaurant group in management, even though he had no previous culinary experience.

“I learned a lot, but I felt I was ultimately delivering someone else’s message. I couldn’t take care of my people the way I wanted to. I realized I wanted to work for myself, and there was a lack of restaurant options in East Cobb. It all fell into place from there.

I was young enough that I could take a risk, so I did.”

What was the catalyst for BlueGrayGal.com? I started on Instagram solely as an experiment to learn more. Three days later, my kitchen was featured on one of the biggest Instagram home accounts. I’m an open book type of person.

I was a duck in water with blogging! It comes naturally to me (maybe too naturally, as my husband would say ... I’ll say and share everything!) There’s something dreamy about social media; my blog is a mix of pretty fantasyland imagery tied with my self-deprecating humor.

Who are some of your personal style icons? I’ve secretly held a soft spot in my heart for Grace Kelly for her class and taste. And for P!nk for her I-don’t-care-what-you-think attitude. I think Suzanne Kasler [of Atlanta-based Suzanne Kasler Interiors] and Phoebe Howard, an interior decorator [with a home furnishings store on Peachtree Hills Avenue], are the bomb.com. Our daughter also has her own personal style so I admire her bold and eccentric flair when it comes to fashion. She always says, ‘Mom, you’re more simple. I prefer bright and colorful.’

How long have you lived in East Cobb and what brought you here? We’ve lived in East Cobb almost seven years, but in the Atlanta area since 2001. My husband is a Chicago transplant, and I’m originally a Florida girl. We have the best of both worlds—East Cobb can make Atlanta seem as big of a city as you’d like, or as small as you want!

What are some of your favorite East Cobb spots? We are huge fans of Seed Kitchen & Bar, Stem Wine Bar, and Drift Fish House & Oyster Bar. The same goes for Moxie Burger. My boys eat adventurous types of food—think octopuses with their heads on them, whole red snapper and sashimi.
