As the end of 2021 draws near (which is hard to believe), I find it challenging to put into words how I am feeling and how many of you must feel. This year has brought with it so many gifts but also so many new challenges. As I think through the ups and downs, highs and lows, there are many words that come to mind, some of them not fit for print, but the one I am committing to is grateful. I am grateful to be here and owning a business that celebrates the wonderful people and places of the Buckhead community. I am grateful for my health and the health of my close friends and family. I’m grateful to my team, who has worked their rear ends off in these rollercoaster-like times. And I’m grateful to myself for having the patience and the drive to move forward, even though the road ahead hasn’t always been clear. We’re coming into the season of being grateful as well. Thanksgiving will be here before we know it. And while it’s always been a day to reflect and give thanks for all that you have, I think it had become routine more than genuine, sincere gratitude for many of us. But these past two years have given us all a chance to really look and examine what we have. For me, it’s been my community. I’ve been so lucky to have lived in the Chastain Park area of Buckhead for the past 35 years. I’ve raised my kids here, built businesses and made lifelong friends in this vibrant and beautiful community. I’ve always known it’s a special place full of caring people. But watching this group of people pull together to help one another, to keep each other going through acts of charity, service and just plain kindness has shown me that this community truly cares about one another. If you know someone who is making a difference for the better, please let us know so we can celebrate the positive people of our community in our upcoming issues of My Buckhead.

Experts say NO. The question of whether the real estate market is a bubble ready to pop seems to be dominating a lot of conversations – and everyone has an opinion. Jorge Sicilia, Chief U.S. Economist at BBVA Research, says, “Conditions today are quite different than in the early 2000s, particularly in terms of credit availability. The current climb in house prices instead reflects strong demand amid tight supply helped along by record-low interest rates. Millennials need houses. Prices will keep rising for a while because inventory is so low.” Sicilia adds, “Underwriting standards are still strong, so there is little risk of a bubble developing.”

ucked inside Buckhead’s Three Alliance Center, chef Ian Winslade’s effortlessly elevated restaurant Mission + Market has brought a uniquely modern American perspective — with a West Coast verve — to Atlanta since it opened in 2018. “We’re a completely different genre of restaurant,” says Winslade. “We introduce lots of different flavors, even from the Pacific Rim, all the way through the California region. So the whole idea behind Mission + Market is based around San Francisco and Northern California, and that wonderful melting pot of flavors around there.” Winslade’s inspiration and care are evident in Mission + Market’s menu, which changes seasonally based on fresh ingredients and dishes. The cocktail program lends itself to incorporating local ingredients, too, complementing the food with higher-acid flavors and crisp details. On weekends, guests can stop by Mission + Market to enjoy a refined brunch experience, which features a curated menu of elevated favorites, along with live music. “The menu is a constant evolution,” notes Winslade. “We’re always evolving, always changing and always trying to introduce new, different things to the restaurant.”

Much of the menu will be based on Akly family recipes. “It’s funny, we found such an overlap in Lebanese/Mediterranean food and what Ian does, because he likes high-acid, clean, fresh flavors,” says Jonathan. “We let the ingredients stand for themselves and present them in their best possible light.” Which is something Winslade is doing with all of the food he puts out. Pinky Cole CHEF • ENTREPRENEUR • OWNER OF SLUTTY VEGAN By Wyndi Kappes
Rarely do chefs come along who completely change the cultural and food landscape. Pinky Cole has done just that. What started as a humble food truck has grown into a plant-based movement centered around the Slutty Vegan, a counter-service eatery in southwest Atlanta. One bite of its delectable and juicy vegan burgers and you’ll understand the hype that draws lines down the block and consistently brings celebrities like Queen Latifah, Snoop Dogg and Killer Mike in the door to be “sluttified.”
Q: Why the name Slutty Vegan? Pinky Cole: It might seem risqué, but Slutty Vegan isn’t a reference to sex! I use it to describe the ultimate euphoric experience of eating the perfect vegan burger. We chose our language to make plant-based food more accessible — and, fundamentally, to break down barriers — since vegan food is normally associated with rich, white spaces.
PC: I use fresh herbs to spice up all of my meals. I use pimento, coconut milk, Jamaican peppers, fresh garlic, vegetable bouillon, exotic mushrooms and more to make my vegan food taste delicious. I primarily get all of my ingredients at local farmers markets around town, The Fresh Market and Whole Foods Market.
Q: Tell us about The Pinky Cole Foundation. PC: My mother inspired my altruism that speaks to my identity and the work I do daily for The Pinky Cole Foundation. She came from Jamaica to this country when she was 17 and once she got here, she met my dad and, long story short, he ended up doing 22 years in prison. The whole time I was growing up, she not only kept our house afloat but also helped others. We started The Pinky Cole Foundation in 2019 with her in mind and with the desire to empower young people of color to leverage economic opportunities, successful risk-taking and innovation. I’ve made a commitment to use my resources so that I can help as many young Black men get out of the system as early as I can, and I think that more business owners should take the responsibility to do that.

Seasant Chen ARTS ADVOCATE • DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS • LEADERSHIP DEVELOPER By Denise K. James
When Seasant Chen’s grandparents met in the United States many years ago at UC Berkeley in California, the couple bonded over a shared passion for education. It was this same passion they brought back to their native country of China and eventually passed down to their granddaughter. Chen, who is the current director of admissions at Brandon Hall School, an independent college preparatory school in Sandy Springs, said that even though her whole family dabbled in other industries, education was always “at their core.” “They wanted to share their knowledge to help students achieve their potential,” she says. Following in her grandparents’ footsteps, Chen chose to pursue higher education at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah. She majored in painting and photography and says the fine arts have given her much insight into understanding human nature — insight that became invaluable to her career. During her studies at SCAD, Chen worked as an advisor for other international students, becoming the college’s director of international admissions after graduation. She felt admissions gave her an even wider reach than being a classroom teacher. “Admissions became a way for me to use my own experiences to create a better experience for international families,” she says.

“The mission of Brandon Hill is a large part of why I took the job,” she explains. “We want students to find their own path and their own way. When people think of leadership, they often think of a CEO or the president, but we want students to be brave enough to embrace themselves. Once you find and accept yourself, you can let bravery lead your life.” Chen adds that while some might find an arts education outdated or less useful in today’s increasingly STEM-focused world, she believes the arts are crucial for mental development, critical thinking and inclusivity. “Diversity and inclusion are not just about race,” she says. “It’s about being okay with who you are and with the different people in this world.” When Chen isn’t engaging with the students and families of Brandon Hall, you can find her around Buckhead, spending time with her family at the beautiful local parks or indulging in a good meal at St. Cecilia or Haven Restaurant and Bar. brandonhall.org

After departing her role at SCAD, Chen accepted a position in Atlanta with the National Society of High School Scholars. She worked as the director of academic programs, bringing international value to a mostly American honor society. She stepped into her current role at Brandon Hall in May 2021 — a role she’d applied for previously but set aside in order to work for the honor society. Turns out, she’d had her eye on the school for a while.
