Be Nice to Your Neighbors It sounds like something our mothers used to say to us and our siblings during a long road trip, and it’s not always easy, but it is ALWAYS good. We need to remember that we are all feeling the effects of the pandemic and that we are each dealing with our own challenges and fears. But before we can extend kindness to others, we also need to remember to be kind to ourselves. It is OK if the house is a bit of a mess, it is OK if you are feeling burnt out or overwhelmed. It’s OK if you feel scared. We need to center ourselves, remind ourselves of our many blessings, and take a second to be grateful for what we do have. Once we’ve done that, we can start to share that energy at home by consciously reminding ourselves to have a little extra patience with our partners and children who may be struggling too. We can extend that mindset to our neighbors and our community too. A wave and a smile go a long way toward promoting positivity. Whether it’s a word of encouragement to the grocery store clerk who has been standing on his/her feet for eight hours or the person who needs to shift into your lane in traffic, just do it. It is really not that hard to put others first. You may just make someone’s day. Who knows—Buckhead is known as a great place to raise a family. The Atlanta Chef Takes on Spanish and Mexican Cuisine in His New Buckhead Res By Alexandra Shimalla
T
he first time Chef Mimmo Alboumeh walked the vacant space on 1820 Peachtree Road, it was already his. Not only was the area laid out perfectly, but the square-footage also held his lucky number, seven.
“When I walked into this place, I felt magic,” he says. “It’s 5,002 square feet, and five and two equal seven, so I said I was getting this space no matter what.” His passion and determination paid off, as that address now houses his new restaurant Botica, which opened in January. Although opening during a pandemic wasn’t ideal, Mimmo, who has had a hand in opening several other restaurants, welcomed the challenge. “We’ve been blessed,” he says when asked about the community’s response. “People will literally stop me and thank me for opening. It gives you that [sense of] encouragement—like I’ve done the right thing.” By his estimate, Botica has entertained around 3,000 customers a week. “Also, I have a great team,” he adds, crediting his team of 70 employees whom he considers family, a group of which has been with him for over 14 years. “I call them my A-team.”

What does botica mean? The word has roots in many cultures, much like Mimmo himself, who was born in Lebanon but spent much of his childhood in Italy and Spain. Sharing origins with the French “boutique” and Spanish “bodega,” botica loosely translates to drugstore or general store, where you can find a little bit of everything. “It’s kind of like a combination that allows me to put two or three cultures together,” Mimmo explains. “I can combine the Spanish and Mexican [cultures] without being like the more traditional [restaurant] names. And I like the sound of it—it’s sexy.”

The food at Botica is also a winning combination. Inspired by street-tacos from his trips to Mexico, Mimmo works his magic to meld them together with the flavors of Spanish cuisine. Think combinations like Spanish meatballs with salsa marinara and braised lamb tacos with garbanzo beans.
A self-proclaimed perfectionist, Mimmo took six months to create the menu. “When you are very passionate about things, you never settle for ‘it’s good,’” he explains. And you can taste that passion in the ingredients Mimmo uses, from the locally sourced, seasonal vegetables to the high-quality meats that are smoked in-house on the Big Green Egg.

But delicious food is only part of what makes up Botica; the rest is atmosphere. “These cultures want to give you a part of what they do, which is to share their love and passion with you,” he says, explaining that dining in other cultures, including Lebanese culture, goes beyond serving food; it’s about creating a shared experience. “That’s the most important thing and the same vibe I wanted to create.” Having called Atlanta home for over 25 years, Mimmo believes wholeheartedly in supporting the communities he serves. He regularly hosts charitable events and participates in signature fundraising events around Atlanta. He is also actively involved with Frank Ski Kids Foundation, T.J. “Spain is known for having the best octopus in the world,” Chef Mimmo explains. So naturally, he had to include it in Botica’s menu line-up. First boiled in a brine of wild herbs, spices and Spanish sherry, the octopus is then chargrilled to perfection before being sliced up thin and served over a fresh batch of patatas bravas (Spanish potatoes). The appetizer has been a hit with customers, but the dish can be difficult to create for the inexperienced chef. Good thing Mimmo is an expert. “It’s a challenge. An extreme challenge,” he admits. “The difference between [cooking] a five-pound and seven-pound octopus is only three minutes.”

Struggling with depression after college, Umama turned to fitness to find herself and learn better self-discipline. “As I was playing flag football, I questioned why the recreational sports team model didn’t exist in the fitness industry. Why couldn’t I join a weekly yoga, barre or CrossFit team?” she recalls. And like any true innovator, when she couldn’t find what she was looking for, she built it herself.
Q: What was it like creating an app? Did you already
have a technical background to build off of or did you teach yourself?
Umama Kibria: There are so many no-code tools out there that help nontechnical founders transform ideas into impact. We learned all the basics from ATL accelerator programs Goodie Nation, Atlanta Tech Village, Georgia State Main Street Entrepreneurship Seed Fund, Venture Atlanta, and Beyond the Game Network that were crucial in understanding how to build our technology.
Q: What is something you’ve learned during your experience with SweatPack that surprised you?
UK: Somehow we always come back to our original ideas. I came up with the original idea for SweatPack in January 2017 after getting laid off from my corporate job. But the market wasn’t ready yet. However, I was confident in my mission to help others get committed to fitness. It started with delivering content on social media, then events, then a marketing agency, but eventually, after listening to my customers (people and fitness professionals), I realized they wanted SweatPack.

UK: Now is the time for the fitness industry to transform. We know digital fitness is here to stay, but consumers will be searching for complimentary fitness services that fuel their mental, physical and social wellbeing. We know consumer demand will shift to unbundled gym memberships and corporate wellness will focus on employee social engagement and retention during remote work. We’ll be there to help them sweat and socialize— consistently.
Q: What is your favorite sport to play or way to workout? UK: I love strength and conditioning training then executing with flag football! It’s fast, agile and team-oriented that fuels my work mentality. When she isn’t hard at work, some of Umama’s favorite Buckhead spots are Superica, F45 Training Buckhead and Whiskey Blue.

America is like a blank canvas to me on which I have been able to draw up my aspirations and dreams, and my inherent work ethic enabled me to realize the full picture on that canvas.
Q: How has your perception of this age changed since
you were younger? Did your parents look and act at 40 the way you do?
SL: I am not as old as I thought I would be at this age, haha. Fortunately, both of my parents always had enviable health and vitality, which I am glad I inherited. My mother still runs around in 4” high-heels and dresses to the nines in her Chanel with beautifully done make-up. Come to think of it, I do not think I have ever seen my mother without her being completely put together.
Q: What is your favorite way to give back to your community? SL: I have chaired several charity fundraisers such as Meals on Wheels for Senior Citizens, the Ballet Ball, NBAF+Fashion and nsoro Gala. In addition, I actively participate in events for Humane Society and make donations to numerous organizations such as the High Museum, the Opera Ball, the Swan House Ball, Bow-Wow Brunch, Wounded Warriors, Project Open Hand and CHOA. In May, I also bought 500 meals for our front-line workers from Heirloom BBQ to show them our appreciation.
Q: What is your favorite quote? SL: If A is a success in life, then A=X+Y+Z…, X is work, Y is play, and Z is keeping your mouth shut. I am still working on the Y and the Z.
Q: What are some of your favorite places in Buckhead? SL: I like Le Colonial, Atlas and War Horse for dining. Christie McLean of Athletic Edge Sports Massage is my go-to for my monthly massage. My favorite party venue is The Estate on Piedmont Road.

Last year, the real estate company Harry Norman had its 90-year anniversary. To celebrate, the company decided to partner with the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta to raise money for charities across the city.
