From the Editor We’re kicking off 2018 with a special section dedicated to our favorite pets! I’m gung ho about this because I’ve been a dog lover for years. And although my boxer, Miles, is no longer physically with me, he lives on in my heart forever.

That’s why I couldn’t get enough of our feature on People & Their Pets (p. 32). Each pet owner submitted a photo of their beloved bestie with a brief description about what makes their baby stand out. I promise, you’re going to love each write-up. As a single mom of five children who has been through homelessness, divorce, and a stroke, 48-year-old Alpharetta resident Elena Taylor knows that being a mother under any circumstances takes ingenuity, resourcefulness, and a whole lot of support.

It was that understanding and her passion for motherhood that spurred her to leave her job as a patient advocate for Hospital Corporation of America and start her blog, TheInnovativeMom.com, on Mother’s Day 2016. From reflections on never-ending to-do lists, to posts filled with pick-me-ups and body positivity, Elena describes the site as “a huge hug and encouragement for moms.” It was the birth of an idea she had been holding onto for years.

“I wanted to connect with other moms and let them know that while we are always thinking about taking care of others, we need to think about ourselves, as well.

Motherhood is not about being a martyr,” she says.

When you study chef Kevin Rathbun’s steady rise to the top of his field, you get a sense that he wasn’t meant to do anything else. His prominent, decades-long presence on the Atlanta food scene proves that he has a gift for sensing what people will crave. He’s worked with the best in the culinary world—Emeril Lagasse brought him on as a sous chef at New Orleans’ famous Commander’s Palace early in his career (especially fortuitous, since Kevin met his wife, Melissa, there). He’s been nominated for a James Beard Award and he’s won Food Network’s “Iron Chef America” and “Chopped,” where he earned money for the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

NOW, 14 YEARS LATER, RATHBUN’S IS STILL A SOLID SUCCESS— AS ARE KEVIN’S OTHER VENTURES, KROG BAR, KEVIN RATHBUN STEAK, AND KR STEAKBAR.

As a chef, Kevin rose through the ranks at an impressive list of restaurants in Houston, New Orleans, Dallas and Atlanta—but he yearned to open his own. An investor loaned him money to open Rathbun’s, his first restaurant.

Admittedly a huge fan of meat and potatoes (“In the Midwest, that’s what we eat!” he says), Kevin decided it would be a steakhouse. “I paid the investor back within six months,” he says proudly. “But a week after I did, he came to me and said, ‘I’m absolutely stunned that you were able to do this. I’m giving you the money back—you deserve every bit of it.’

He totally had faith in me.”

Now, 14 years later, Rathbun’s is still a solid success—as are Kevin’s other ventures, Krog Bar, Kevin Rathbun Steak, and KR SteakBar. But he hasn’t forgotten the lesson he learned when his investor helped him achieve his dream. “Melissa and I try to pay it forward,” he explains. It comes as no surprise to learn that Kevin grew up in a household full of great food and music. His mother worked as a maître d’ at a fine-dining restaurant and his father played in a jazz band in Kansas City, Missouri, where Kevin grew up.

“My mother wore a tuxedo at work every night, and my dad was outside barbecuing,” Kevin chuckles. “We ate really great food. They loved to eat out, listen to jazz and entertain friends at home.”
