Well, hindsight is 20/20. I’ve been playing on basketball teams ever since my days with coach Hamilton, and he was right! What you put into your body definitely shows on and off the court. Whether practicing my jump shot for hours or hitting the weight room, coach Hamilton always pushed me to be my best.

Dear Alpharetta Neighbors, I’ve been playing basketball since I was in high school. I remember coach Robert Hamilton welcoming me to the team and challenging me at our practices. He’d say, “Laurie! You can’t eat fast food and expect to move quickly up and down the court!” Of course, I’d mumble under my breath, “My name is not Laurie. It’s Laura. And I really like McDonald’s cheeseburgers!”

he condition of being overweight has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that two out of three Americans are overweight to varying degrees. Consequently, weight loss is an issue that many people struggle with.

Becoming overweight may be multifactorial.

This includes a complex interaction between genetics, environmental factors, a high-calorie diet, reduced physical activities, stress, poor coping mechanisms, and poor sleeping habits.

Excess weight can negatively impact every organ system in your body and may eventually lead to an early death. These ill effects can be manifested in common diseases and issues such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, stroke and heart attack, fatty liver disease, gallstones, and increased risk of many cancers.

One can therefore appreciate that weight loss and the maintenance of an overall healthy lifestyle is critical and requires a multidisciplinary approach.In our practice, a major focus is assisting patients in their weight loss journey and helping them maintain a healthy lifestyle. We incorporate a multidisciplinary approach in the weight loss options available to our patients.

Treatment options include the use of pharmacological agents such as phentermine, Qsymia, BELVIQ, CONTRAVE, and Saxenda, along with close clinical follow up.

Pharmaceuticals may be combined with noninvasive procedures such as the intragastric balloon. This is an office-based procedure with anesthesia for the patient’s safety and comfort.

The balloon remains in place for six months.

During this time, patients undergo an intense period of medical supervision and lifestyle coaching. Our physicians work in concert with psychologists, dietitians and fitness trainers

As owners of the Alpharetta-based catering company, The Chef’s Table, Winston and Miranda Tennant expose their family to new experiences through their work with Children Helping Children (CHC), an organization teaching kids to be leaders in philanthropy.

Q: How did your family get involved with CHC? Miranda Tennant: We started as staff. Back in 2016, Michelle [Hodgson], the founder, asked Winston, my husband, to help out with Cocktails in the Clouds [a fundraising soirée]. He used to be the only bartender we could provide for CHC functions. Since then, having grown the business, we are able to provide more help.

Q: How has CHC benefited your family?

MT: Showing my stepsons, Brandon, 15, and Gavin 13, there are people going through tough times is good for them. Though they haven’t done a lot with CHC, when we cater events, they help package the orders and organize everything. They enjoy coming to LOVEFEST - Free Family Philanthropic Festival [a CHC event where children can take part in service projects] and participating in activities. Last year, the woodworking station was one of their favorites because they were able to use real power tools to build something.

MT: CHC has taught me to be more selfless. With the work we do for Michelle, we can’t give everything complimentary, but we try to do as much as we can. Food is not the only thing she has to worry about when planning everything. The workload involved is too much for one person to tackle by themselves. Our contribution not only helps her, but it’s a trickle-down effect that benefits others.

eing a coach is a rare opportunity to get to know athletes at their best and their worst, and to be their support system through their sweetest victories and hardest trials. Although they know that not everyone on their team will go on to break records or play professionally, coaches believe

that dedicated participation in sports leads to a more well-rounded lifestyle and a strong sense of personal confidence.

Adam Clack Milton High School Head Football Coach Adam Clack has been playing football since the second grade, and now, three decades later, he is coaching the sport at Milton High School. During the 2018-2019 school year, the varsity team won its first state championship in the school’s history. Clack believes that feat was due to the lessons his athletes have learned as well-rounded people.

“Being part of a team and depending on others teaches them to depend on themselves.

Watching this process unfold is a rewarding aspect of coaching for Clack. “One student, Jordan, is a natural leader but struggled with the consistency and humility that effective leadership demands. When his peers voted him as a captain for the 2018 season, Jordan’s biggest fear was letting his teammates down.

So he attacked each day with the purpose of serving his team. The consistency and humility he once lacked were now on full display, and as a result, our team followed his lead all the way to the championship.”

Leander Murphy A Plus Sports Performance Center Co-Founder and Athletic Director of Human Performance and Education Growing up, Leander Murphy struggled with obesity and Tourette’s syndrome but that didn’t stop him from pushing himself in football, lacrosse, and basketball. Now, as the co-founder and athletic director of human performance and education at A Plus Sports Performance Center, which is a training facility, he sees up to 45 people a day—including individuals with special needs, Olympians, and professional athletes—and helps them achieve both physical and mental goals. “Staying laser-focused on proper training improves skills and prevents injuries,” Murphy says.

And while nailing speed, power, agility, reaction, and quickness is a big part of his personal training, Murphy believes the most important athletic skills are cognitive.

“Teaching others to find their confidence and strength became my passion because of the confidence my coaches instilled in me.”

For the past 10 years, Alpharetta resident Katie Arnold has coached the varsity cheerleading squad at Alpharetta High School. She took gold in the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games women’s 400-meter wheelchair race, and now coaches adaptive track and field at BlazeSports America, a nonprofit sports program for those with disabilities.

“The average kid has plenty of opportunities to try different sports while they’re growing up, but it’s just not the same for kids with disabilities,” Cloy says.

She notes the impact the opportunity to try adaptive sports had on one of her athletes. “When Braxton started with the program a year ago, he had never been exposed to adaptive sports. From day one, he was pumped to try out track and field,” she says. “Outside of practice, however, Braxton was facing life as a young man with a disability, which included bullying at school. Since joining the team, he has not only excelled in track and field, but also joined the wheelchair basketball team and competed in the national championships this past spring. Sports have helped Braxton develop confidence, which he now displays in all areas of his life.”

In 2009, Lisa Marshall started Multisport Explosion, a triathlon training program held at facilities around metro Atlanta. Back then, she only had a dozen athletes, and now, she coaches over 100, including the only high-performance team in Georgia. To successfully manage the physical and mental demands of the sport, the young triathletes have to learn focus and commitment skills very early on.

“These athletes are balancing advanced placement classes, high school sports—usually cross-country, swimming, and track—and training for triathlons. They have to learn how to manage their time, work on communication skills with coaches and teachers, dial in their nutrition and sleep so they can do workouts before school, and again after school, all while staying injury free,” Marshall says.
