o officially open the Ateneo Fiesta, the students coming from different divisions gather in Magsaysay Park to prepare for the starting off of the parade last August 13, 8 a.m. All divisions came up with their own, unique theme. The Computer Studies division chose a fairytale touch brushing it with their purple division shirt while the Engineering and Architecture division preferred the jail-like concept in which their striking orange shirt added to the drama. At the same time, the Business and Management division still puts on their light blue shirt and get into the Broadway fever as the College of Nursing gets enchanted with their simple yet stylish white division shirt. The people coming from the red corner, the Humanities Division, accents the parade with the Kadayawan festivities fascinating the crowd with the drum and bugle corps while the Natural Science and Mathematics division embellish the parade with their green division

shirt ornamenting it with a tribal stroke. The Philosophy division, on the other hand, settled with a casual get-up of their Blue division shirt making the parade more rich and multi-colored. On the other hand, the Accountancy division hits off with their division shirt adorning it with their creative masquerade of nations elaborated the said parade more. The Social Sciences and Education division did not fail to fascinate the crowd with their pink shirt serenading the parade with their rock glam theme. The parade started at Magsaysay Park passing through Sta. Ana Avenue crossing Jacinto Extension en route to Roxas Avenue. The high spirits of Ateneo students ignited the core of the fiesta which is to celebrate the 61st year of Ateneo so as to stir up the camaraderie among students and faculty members. Truly, the parade embodies the Ateneo spirit.

ight after the parade, Ateneans stormed the University covered court to witness the Dance Showdown 2009. The showdown staged one entry per division, each composed of four dancers, one per year level. The dancers proved their prowess as they performed a 4-minute Hiphop dance. The famed Bandila Fusion opened the showdown with a blast as they performed a number together with the contestants. All eight performances tried to outshine each other with their powerful moves and stylish costumes. The SSE division wore their trademark pink getup while the BSA-MA wowed the crowd as they closed their performance with sensual moves. The NSM sported a black and white motif and the CS division amused the spectators with their entertaining number as the CON wore surgical gloves reflective of their flair. The performances

were judged according to choreography, creativity, costume, projection and overall impact. The all-girl group of Danielle Angeles, Chelsea Trenchy Jugador, Sheryl Lea Batitao and Fe Amor Cañada from the Humanities division emerged victorious while the Engineering and Architecture, with their riveting routine, and the Business and Management, with their resplendent moves, placed second and third respectively. The winners were announced by Mr. Rikki Enriquez and SAMAHAN president Ria Lumapas. The worn-out-from-parade audience was enlivened from the start of the first performance up to the end when winners from last year’s competition, Pia Marie Piatos and Bjorn Brian Ortega form the B&M division, performed once more. Talent and grace converged to create such showdown embodying yet another fun-filled Ateneo Fiesta.

n event that did not go unnoticed by many Ateneans was the installation art competition in which students and teachers alike contended to create wonderful art structures through the use of recycled materials. This competition is one way of truly epitomizing the theme of this year’s college fiesta which was “Celebrating Life and Love with Jesus through Mother Mary”. The contestants had from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon to complete the said art work in the open field near the gazebo area. All divisions participated in the event. Even the Philosophy division was well-represented. During the awarding ceremony the BSAMA division was awarded the place of second runner-up. A feature that stood out from their structure was the pathway of sand and the different shoes which represented different

Maria Katherina Galope Ateneans from all walks of life. The 2nd place was awarded to the SSE division’s masterpiece which made use of what looked like to be a lot of water cellophane. They created a huge and intricate structure fashioned out of red and blue water cellophane. What made this structure stick out was how the two colors intertwined with each other. The award for the champion was of course awarded to the Humanities Division. This division stood out from all the rest with their art work made up almost entirely of metal scrap. Their elaborate structure showed how the metal was twisted and formed to create a smooth flow. And although not everyone is an art critic, everybody noticed how their creativity, uniqueness and of course resourcefulness made their structure one of a kind.h

Just so everybody knows, the exuberant Ateneo Fiesta is the most anticipated celebration of the whole academic year. Not only can students take a few days’ break from all the pressures and stress brought about by the ever-challenging school workload, the Fiesta is also an avenue for us to take part on the different events which aim to mold us into socially active and skillful persons which is the image of a real Atenean. As the festivity marks its start with the Celebration of the Holy Eucharist right after the procession, students, faculty members and a good number of non-teaching staff looked forward to the shrilling, high-spirited and colorful Parade the following day which was well-attended by the Ateneo community. The university fully supports the arts hence the heap of events for this year’s fiesta ranging from the most attended major contests such as the Cheer Dance and Sayawtenista to the trivial ones like the Picture Perfect, Installation Art, just to name a few, took place. Games, which pay tribute to our roots such as the Palarong Pinoy, also highlighted the said event. During Fiesta, the whole Ateneo community pays its deepest respects to the three major thrusts of Jesuit education, which are academic excellence, social involvement and spiritual development as well as commemorate the Ignatian core values, Magis and Cura Personalis. As a Filipino, Catholic, Jesuit university, Ateneo de Davao is keen on giving importance to these essential pillars so as to inculcate in the minds of the students that Ateneo education primarily focuses on living for others and seizing the best out of every endeavor. This year’s fiesta paints light-hearted faces of people in the entire Ateneo community as divisions battled for victory in the various competitions held. The soaring competitive spirit and fervor to bring home the bacon are motivators enough to get everyone work their butt off during the Fiesta.

Albeit each participant shows off breathtaking entries, only the best are selected to bring home the fame and glory, as what happens in any other competition. The spirit of sportsmanship and spirit of humility are put into action. Then the realization begins to sink in that the awards matter but more so do the honest work and full dedication of one’s self to the craft. After all, the Fiesta is a training ground for us to hone our God-given skills and at the same time cultivate friendship even with those who we initially thought of as competitors. At the end of the meaningful merriment, the whole Ateneo de Davao community undoubtedly had a great blast. Even for a short period of time, we all had a chance to unleash our creativity and look back to the real purpose why we have such a celebration. Now, after everything has been done, ATENEWS brings you the mementos of the recently concluded 61st Ateneo Fiesta. This will surely put you in nostalgia as we take you back to the events that took place during the merrymaking time. True enough, after you take a good look at what we have captured, you can now look forward to what the next Fiesta brings to the delight of the Ateneo population. Along the process, each one dreams of their division winning and being adored by the whole crowd. The heartwarming support fuels up the determination of the participants to really do well to get a chance on the elusive victory.

procession was held last W e d n e s d a y, at 3:00pm. The line began moving from the Ateneo de Davao University campus, towards the Jacinto gate, on to Jacinto St., passing through Padre Gomez St., onward to Roxas Avenue, and finally halted inside the campus, entering from the Roxas gate. Shortly after the procession, the Holy Eucharist was celebrated inside the covered court, with Rev. Archimedes A.
Lachica, S.J. as the celebrant. Overall, these sacred activities proceeded on smoothly, and was participated in by almost the entire university community; faculty, staff and students alike. The procession and the Holy Eucharist marked the beginning of the 4- day celebration in line with the 61st Ateneo de Davao University Fiesta celebration, which is celebrated in honor of our university patroness, Our Lady of the Assumption.

he Ateneo de Davao University Covered Court was jam-packed with students who stood witness to the first night event in celebration of ADDU’s 61st College Fiesta, the Ateneo Star Search 2009. The crowd was obviously enjoying as 9 students representing their respective divisions performed their best before the Ateneo crowd to win one of the most coveted title in the campus, the ADDU Star Search 2009 Champion. The venue was full of thundering claps and loud noises as friends and supporters of the participants cheered for their bets and

ight spectacular performances drive the crowd screaming as the eight divisions cheer the night away. The cheer dance competition has always been the hottest and most anticipated event in every Ateneo fiesta. Different colored balloons, whistles, loud drums and splendid lights match the brilliant presentations of each division. A noise barrage could not equal the howling crowd. The cheer dance fever is unstoppable, as each color screams, rooting for their home team. The cheer dancers, some with painted faces, some with fuzzy hair and glittery makeup ardently flaunted their festive yells and attractive formations. The top five performers were Engineering and Architecture, Accountancy, Natural Science and Math, College of Nursing, and Humanities.

But in the end, one performer, in the name of Lou Bertini Brizuela Benjamin from the College of Nursing stood out from the rest of the contestants and was hailed the Ateneo Star Search 2009 Champion. The BSA-MA and the EA Divisions also managed to bag the 1st and 2nd Runner Up, respectively. During the show, the contestants and the entire university, as a mark of a true Atenean spirit, also paid tribute to the late President Cory Aquino by singing the songs popular during her time and the Martial Law period.

The stiff competition made the judges decide to have two winners, the Accountancy Division and the College of Nursing, which unfortunately disappointed some students. It was a night of eagerness, fun, and perseverance. It was a night of warm victory that even the heavy rain that night could not dampen the high spirits of Ateneans.

here’s a terrible draft blowing from the gap between the roof and the boys’ comfort room fit to chill their bones, fine drops of rain drenching them and the floor of the Covered Court becoming colder under their feet clad in flimsy dance shoes, but, nothing daunted, the Sayawtenista dancers went on strutting their cunning clothes and swaying their hips in tribute to the best shows of Broadway. It was surely a moment of joie de vivre. Who can resist the girl dancers of the Accountancy division, with their glittery gold hats and vests above legs encased by stockings? Who can say no to the sinfully seductive femme fatales of Chicago, channeled by the NSM performers? How can anyone not be charmed by the SSE Mamma Mia hippies, or not be impressed by the professionallooking efforts of the Nursing performers in their adaptation of that iconic of iconic musicals, Cats? How can anyone not feel infected with the
o impel the spirit of Fiesta within the campus, the GIMIKAN booths from 9 divisions was formally opened to Ateneans at the open field of the school. Around 2PM of the first day of Fiesta, the Campus Clubs Organization headed by CCO Vice President Ms. Marian Sanchez initiated the opening ceremony with the cutting of ribbon to officially launch GIMIKAN. This event will last up to the last day of the fiesta. Different divisions prepared different gimiks to attract the public with the features they offered. To provoke each division to come up with a unique and creative stall, the CCO held a competition for the best booths. The criteria for judging include 50%- Design and Creativity, 30%-income, and 20%-CCO voters’ choice. Here are some of the features offered by each booth during the fiesta: BSAMA- token operated shooters and dart board
D i v i s i o n ( C l o s i n g Opposition). They debated on the motion “This House b e l i e v e s that Ateneo Identity is harmed by Ateneo Fiesta Culture”. The Prime Minister, with her Deputy bannered strong arguments that were later on rebutted by the Opposition Benches down to the Closing Houses. Points of Information were raised that had strengthened each other’s stands. At the end of the day, the Humanities Division bagged the 1st place for the extemporaneous dialogue contest, followed by the Accountancy Division (2nd) and Philosophy Division (3rd). For the 12th Ignatian Cup, the Accountancy Division got the win.

he annual showcase of fashionable creativity manifested through Jazz Up Your Jeans has been done with a twist this year. Not only have designers from every division created festive and lively styles to adorn the plain jeans, they also made it a point to integrate their ideas with the theme for this year’s fiesta “Celebrating Life and Love with Jesus through Mother Mary”. The designers did the entire designing and decorating at F200 from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. which was immediately followed by the judging of the designs. During the Sayawtenista and Gawad 2009 Night, the designs were presented to the crowd by a male and female model from each division who were clad in the ingeniously adorned jeans. Humanities Division’s design, made by Jus Vincent Kirk Jugador and Alyza Jen
Fra n c i n i l l a , wowed the judges and bagged the championship title for Jazz Up Your Jeans 2009. The first runnerup came from the magnificent creation of Social Sciences and Education’s talented designers, Erwin Navarro and Edelyn Grace Rivera while the fabulously lit design from the Computer Studies Division designers Winky Lawrence So and Rafael John Sy won the spot for second place.

sees it in a different way. Through the use of the henna tattoo, artists are able to express their emotions in a unique way, using skin as canvas. All artists from each division battled the blazing heat of the sun and worked on their piece from 9:00 in the morning until 12:30 in the afternoon, with their creations judged at 2:00 p.m. The henna tattoo designs were presented by a male model from each division who graced up the event in between Sayawtenista and Gawad 2009 by taking off their jackets and treading on the center stage with the spotlight following them. All participants gave off promising works, but in the end, only the best three were awarded. The Accountancy Division bagged the third place, with the Humanities Division in second, and the Nursing Division winning the first place.

n the crisp morning of the second day of the fiesta, students from different divisions gathered at the gazebo to participate in different contests concerning the arts. One of these contests is the infamous henna tattoo contest, most especially known for the good looking models bearing the tattoo, and of course the very message symbolized by it. Five divisions joined the contest, namely the Social Science and Education Division, the Humanities Division, the Accountancy Division, the Computer Studies Division, the Natural Science and Mathematics Division, and the College of Nursing. The key of this contest is to portray the theme “Celebrating Life and Love with Jesus Through Mother Mary” through the use of the henna tattoo. While some people think of tattoos as something vulgar, the contest

dance itch upon seeing the snazzy moves of the Humans? How can primal urges hope to be suppressed after the BM lions took hold of the floor? And what is more joyful to behold than the EA people dancing with gusto and putting the excited crowd under their thrall? It was a wonderful event. Even Sir Rikki and Fr. Samson joined in on the fun. There were a few let-downers in the show (NSM followed almost the exact choreography as that danced by Catherine Zeta-Jones and Co. in the movie version) as well as a couple of highlights (the characterization of Pumba by that teacher from BM was absolutely perfect), but the teams have to be ranked, and differences of opinion need to be settled, so, though the performers all did well, they had to be classified into winners and, well, losers. Humanities came in at third place, Nursing at second, and NSM at first.

he 12th Ignatian Cup and Extemporaneous Dialogue Contest took over during the Fiesta at F213 that was hosted by the Ateneo Debate Varsity. Participants of each division were dressed up formally, signifying that they are geared up for the battle. The Extemporaneous Dialogue Contest was the first to stun the people through its witty and funny eccentric motions such as “Sex Kills Romance” and “Heart-Breakers Must Be Criminalized”. Though they responded humorously towards the matters, it lightened the mode of everybody’s senses. After the Extemporaneous Dialogue, the debaters who blocked the semis took their seats for the British Parliamentary Debate. The Opening Benches were taken by the College of Nursing (Opening Government) and the Philosophy Division (Opening Opposition). The Closing Benches were occupied by the Accountancy Division (Closing Government) and by the Social Sciences and Education

awad 2009 recognized students who are excellent in academic and non-academic areas in the recently concluded 61st Ateneo Fiesta. It was a night of prestige for students as their efforts in performing their academic duties well and actively participating in extra curricular activities were given much recognition. Four students from their respective year levels were awarded for being the best of what an Atenean can be. Jonathan Nasser (BS-Bio) was the most outstanding first year student; Tessa Mallari (BSN) emerged as the most outstanding sophomore; Jan Rapahel Cacayan (BS ECE) was hailed as the most outstanding third year; and Elaine Joan Cedeno was acknowledged as the most oustanding fourth year for a fifth year course. The said event also gave recognition to exemplary clubs and organization. For this
year, the political party PIGLASAPAT won the award for the Most Outstanding Club. The night ended with smiles from every person most especially the parents of those awarded. This just shows that through hard work, passion and determination, an Atenean can truly be holistic and be an example of Ignatian values.
