The Office of Student Affairs, one of the The meeting was attended by the EASEC, SAMAHAN, OSA staff and the College deans represented by Ms. Carvajal and Dr. Manuta. Mr. Enriquez started the meeting by clarifying that he has no bias against the EA division. “I don’t have any discrimination of Engineering at all.”, as the director answers the numerous complaints filed by the EASEC through the SAMAHAN office. No Timeouts During the boardroom meeting, the OSA director first discussed the sanction no timeouts during the rematch games regarding the violation of the EA division of the allowed number of freshmen participants in the men’s volleyball game, BM vs EA. The complaint was first raised by the Faculty and the BM division, but only the BM division filed a formal complaint to disqualify the EA division. However, the OSA director wanted another sanction in place of disqualifying the EA division in the recent intramurals. “I was quite disappointed [with the violation of the EA] but I don’t like Engineering to be disqualified… dapat may isa pang sanction ----No timeout”, he said. However, Ria Lumapas, incumbent COLLISION, PAGE 2

organizers of the School Fiesta, is currently facing allegations of tampering and results of the Cheerdance 2009. He added that anyone can ask his staff to verify the authenticity of the results.

College of Nursing (BSN) and the Accountancy Division (BSA) tied for the Cheerdance crown, inciting boos and jeers from the Engineering and Architecture (EA) division and other supporters on the night of August 15, 2009. The said tie incited controversies as Enriquez explained the reason for the tie. “It would break the hearts of the judges if they break the tie.” said Mr Enriquez as he read the results of the Cheerdance on the last day of Fiesta. Asked for comments regarding the tie, Mr. Enriquez showed the original results of the Cheerdance competition, in four pages of bond paper with the results written in pencil with affixed signatures of the judges. (A photocopy of the score sheet was furnished for the Atenews; see related table on page 2.) “We use the ranking system in order to verify the winners of the competition”, explained Mr. Enriquez, adding, “The ranking system is the best in terms of comparing the scores of the competing divisions. Hindi naman magandang tignan

kung kunwari ang highest score mo ay 68% tapos ang lowest ay 49%. Score pa ba yon? Kaya we base on rankings.” “The judges didn’t agree on breaking the tie,” he added. Furthermore, the OSA director was a bit puzzled why the EA was protesting. “The Cheerdance Championship does not even involve the EA. If anyone should complain about the tie, it should be the Nursing and Accountancy.” Asked about the general reaction of the crowd regarding the cheerdance results, the OSA director retorted “You don’t judge the crowd. You judge the over-all impact. If you like, you question the credibility of the judges. Ano tayo mag text votes nalang? Or tanggalin nalang sa tallying yang Cheerdance kung pag-aawayan yang result? If the people want to judge, that’s their opinion.” “I’m just telling the truth,” he added. SAMAHAN President Ria Lumapas, who hosted the Gawad ceremony, relates she was shocked by the results of the Cheerdancein an ambush interview with Atenews. “Hindi ko na nga alam kung paano na kami mag tuloy ng-emcee ni Kring (coemcee Kristine Reyes of SAMAHAN). Speechless kaayo mi.” The said result caused a silent protest speared by the EA Division on a Facebook page online and support from other divisions is currently massing. Contrary to what Mr. Enriquez said on There were also allegations of the said winners Inofre, in a seperate interview said “For the announcement of the results, the judges copying some of the routines last year. Allan (Hioca) truly deserved the Cheerdance crown. think they deserve it.” COLLISION, FROM PAGE 1 president of the SAMAHAN, clarified that the no timeout rule was not the agreed sanction. “What we agreed on was consecutive plays. Pero the rules of the game remain and that include timeouts.” “We didn’t know na mawawala ang timeouts. What we know is consecutive plays” she added. EA representative Raphael Cacayan, in another separate interview, felt sorry for the volleyball players. He felt that the sanction was given for the sake of the rematch. “Mura gani, feeling nako kay pildihun dyud ang EA Volleyball. Murag for the char lang tong rematch. According to the players, naga-hulat lang sila’g timeouts sa pikas na team para maka time-out pud sila”, Cacayan added. However, Mr. Enriquez insisted during the boardroom meeting, that the timeouts were the agreed sanctions. No Discrimination

In defense to Mr. Enriquez’s alleged discrimination against the EA, he said “I have nothing against Engineering. I am very transparent. This is me. If it hurts you, what can I do? This is me. What you see is what you get”. This is in relation to the complaint filed by the EA division where the OSA director was heard saying, “Right from the beginning of the game. I knew it. BM will win. Makipagpustahan pa ako. And I prayed for it. God is so gracious”. This statement is one of the facts that allegedly strengthen the evidence regarding the OSA discrimination. “Even if I said so [the said bias statement], that would not change the rules of the game. I am not the referee”, he added. However, SAMAHAN president Ria Lumapas replied that “In my opinion, we also judge things. I feel that the EA should also be right that they were being discriminated. Being quoted [from Mr. Enriquez], “Right from the beginning of the game. I knew it. BM will win. Makipagpustahan pa ako. And I

prayed for it. God is so gracious.” I think it was taken a bit off”. She also added that any division who hears this statement coming from the OSA is sufficient to discourage and “cause distraught” to the students involved. On the other hand, “You have your opinion. I have mine”, replied a cool Mr. Enriquez. Bad Form BM Division Representative Tristan Licudan, sided with the OSA. He said that the decision of no timeouts during the rematch games favors the EA division. “We wanted disqualification. But Sir Rikki doesn’t like disqualification”, he said. However, tensions arose when Mr. Licudan added, “I find the affair funny. The EA is asking for justice where in fact sila ang nag commit ng injustice in the first place”. Ms. Lumapas was quick on replying, “I think this is not the venue to vent those things. The issue was already settled by way of the rematch games. There is no need for you to say those things. It’s in bad form and COLLISION, PAGE 5

EDITORIAL

T

he Ateneo Fiesta, certainly the most anticipated event of the year marks the time when students can not only take a breather from the pressures of their academic life but also engage in competitions that enable them to showcase their talents and develop their interpersonal skills. Ideally, it aims to promote the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie among students. It should have been a wonderful event that everyone enjoyed. As it turns out, students have a mouthful to complain about the recently concluded 61st Ateneo Fiesta. For one, the ticket system for the Cheerdance and Sayawtenista events are bombarded with controversies such as its unequal distribution among students. A related issue is on the Office of Student Affairs releasing an additional 200 tickets without the knowledge of the Ateneo Student Security Force which put the latter into a dilemma on how to accommodate the unforeseen additional audience. Also, there are problems on the identification of the student players’ year level during the intrams. Allegedly, some ‘editing’ of the players’ year level occurred which is a violation to the rules and had been obviously overlooked by the committee organizing the events. Among the myriad of hassles and issues, the most prominent controversy from the events that tainted the Fiesta celebration is the result of the most popular and most attended Cheerdance Competition. Long before the ticket system had been introduced, students line up from the spiral staircase of the Finster building to the gates of the university covered court just to watch the competition and cheer for their respective divisions. This proves that the said competition is the most popular among students and everyone looks forward to knowing who the ultimate winner is. So when the OSA director announced that there was a tie and the judges decided not to break it, the students’ dismay was manifested by their deafening “boos” coupled with the

thumbs down sign. Students were disappointed about the decision and the statement “It would break the hearts of the judges if they break the tie.” only enraged the crowd even more. During the Dance Showdown, there was also a tie but it had been made possible to break it, so why not for the Cheerdance result? Though it can’t be denied that the performances really are superb and won the approval of the judges, the term ‘champion’ connotes exclusivity of triumph, especially in this most-coveted title. On the other hand, the crowd obviously expected the Engineering and Architecture Division to win and when it did not, the crowd kept bellowing that division’s name in unison. This even instigated a walkout on the last night of the Fiesta, with vocal protests noticeable from the disgruntled students. We then wonder: why are the students so quick to jump on the allegations that the Cheerdance results were tampered? The events aformentioned in this editorial, including even those before the Fiesta started, such as the alleged bias of the OSA to and against some students, particularly the EA division, contributed to the over-all decrease in the OSA’s credibility. The OSA’s alleged bias to other divisions were further strenghthened when he was heard of siding with the BM division during a volleyball game. The problems could’ve been solved before they happened. In the first place, communication on change of plans should have been disseminated among all concerned groups, such as the increase in the number of tickets beyond the agreed amount. A thorough investigation should have been made to check the details of the participants in the intrams to ensure that rules are not violated. Lastly, they should have known better than being too concerned on the judges’ “heartbreak” since the whole community screams for a tie break. And the OSA director, in particular, should be very careful about what he says. After all, he represents an office which is very related to students.

Inverbati NURSING

“Dapat EA and Nursing ang nanalo” – Class President, CON

“Akala ko manalo ang EA, pero mas deserving pa din ang Nursing.” – Ria Villacorta “I think EA should have won. Maganda ang nursing, no doubt about it, pero mas maganda talaga ang sa EA.” “Pangit man ang sa EA. Daghan lang ang nag cheer kay daghan ug kembot kembot ang mga lalake. Kung sa content lang naman, maganda sa Nursing. –Nursing Fan

And to think pati ang ubang divisions nag cheer sa ilaha. – Alexis Ulat Dili man to pang cheerance ang sa EA oi, murag pang-ASAP ’09 man toh – ASAP Fan

I don’t agree because I think that the EA division is more deserving to win the cheerdance. – Kuro ino, BS-IT 3rd yr I agree with the outcome because the winning teams worked hard and deserved to win. – Funny Brice BS-IT 2nd year I don’t totally agree with the outcome because I feel that the CS should have been one of the finalists. – butterfly_boy 3rd yr CS

I don’t agree with the results, I believe that EA should have won and I don’t believe the ties. – Chikoy, CS EA should have won because they put in more effort and are more deserving. – Tryst BS-CS 3rd yr Ambot nalingaw ko sa among div. Misking wala na daog, nalingaw gihapon. – Ladygaga, CS

Farout kaayo. Java, 3rd year

Lain ang judges pero okay man ang other events like palarong pinoy. – Chaka, CS “Proud to be part of the purple div. (Lloyd)

- Eva Fonda BM

Hell no! Big NO! - Hello Fluffy, BM

Actually, I’m not being bias but I really want B&M to win in the cheerdance because they did a great job and they improved more. Also, their music was lively and all of them have chemistry.

Is the 2009 Fiesta results fair? Compiled by ATENEWS Editors and Staff. All opinions printed here are quoted verbatim from the statements of individual interviewees and do not in any way represent the official stand of ATENEWS regarding the events commented herein.

- Ren, BM

Uhm.. unfair… sa pag-judge… unfair in terms of judging . - Bel, BM Para sa akin e.a. kasi majority were shouting for e.a. - Sam, BM

Ingon man nila na e.a. jud dapat ang manalo, lingaw kataw-anan and bibo! - Kumi Palisado, BM

Basta mas dapat manalo ang e.a. Sa una between samin and bsa, pero yung nakita namin sumigaw ang e.a. mas maganda sa kanila. - Pamela Udlang, BM Mas deserving ang e.a. kasi mas fresh, alive at lingaw. - Justin, BM Okay sana kung ns and ea or bsa and ea. Basta nanjan ang e.a. - Trixie, BM

And dapat b and m yung pasok. Hindi hum. And in terms of sayawtenista, dapat nursing, dapat hindi naman na ayaw ko sa nsm, pero mas maganda kasi talaga sa nursing. Pia and Mike, BM Maganda naman talaga yun. (BSA).

As a choreographer and a viewer, EA should be the champion. EA’s performance had a wide range of ideas that made the whole crowd scream for admiration. The EA squad managed to show what a cheerdance is supposed to be. At the same time, they’ve shown it in a very fun way. On the other hand, the result for the Sayawtenista is very questionable. EA division deserves the champion banner because they had a clean performance and was really prepared for the competition. Their faculty even managed to keep pace with the moves. I felt about the results because EA surely deserves to be the winner for both contests. It is impossible to have exactly the same score tabulation when there are three judges. The credibility and experience of the judges should be considered to have a real fair competition. -Jose Marlou Young, ABMC 4 No! -Muta_08, Humanities Hell no!One team went like tableau, tableau,

routine. How did they win? Another went field demo, field demo, ethnic. Huh? What is wrong with this school? Why do we need to have a controversy every year? -michi, Humanities As a participant. I was expeting na EA ang madaog (champion). Partly OK, partly not ang results. -CJ, Humanities

Kahit hindi ako EA, I support them wholeheartedly because it is really THEIR win! -EA OMG, Humanities

Makita man jud nimo ang other divisions na ang ginaapas jud nila kay for championship. I am not belittling them man. But with the EA obvious na they were having fun, they were passionate with what they’re doing and they never failed to deliver their primary intention in entertaining the crowd. They deserve to be commended for that. Pero there are some events na questionable ang results. Naa man jud na’y difference. Champion gud to siya, we have two champions?! Sunod, dapat isa lang jud. There is a need for a tie breaker. Ang uban contests, naa ju’y tie breaker. Isa lang man jud na ang winner. Tapos kato, championship pa jud. Tapos highlight pa jud sa Fiesta. Then duha ang daog?! Unfair siya for other divisions. To describe it in one word, kahinahinala. Kabalo na ang crowd kinsa ang daog. In fact, dili na kailangan ug judges. -Czar Oliver Namang, Humanities Representative SSE

I don’t see any justice sa naging results. Binarubal nila ang mga estudyante. - Tiagong Akyat, AB Psych

Ok man, ayos man siya… - Bunny, AB Psych EA deserved it better than the others.. no more no less… - Atenista, BSSW

So far siguro, kung pede akong point of view kay point of view as an audience, not the division itself… on the record na akong istorya kay personal view as an individual student. Siguro, in so far as the creative and the sports event, makaingon ko nga fair siya kasi transparent ang scores, makita nimu kinsay 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc., However sa creative (Sayawtenista, Cheerdance, Henna, Jazz Up), wala man gud mi kakita sa results kung giunsa siya pag judge, wala mi kakita sa values sa mga points na equivalent. And in so far as sa results nga giingon, for me, it some kind of questionable siya kasi makita man nimu sa response sa audience diba kay lahi man

ang ilang gusto nga mga nadaug. Kailangan pa siya i-defend by providing us with the factst, the proof, katong score sheets jud nga gifill-upan sa mga judges. And by that, makaingon jud ta nga fair siya kung makita nato to.” - Jazi Lou Gualberto, SS&E Representative ACCOUNTANCY

Deserving ang BSA-MA division. Nagimprove tayo sa music this year. Although unexpected, kay during the practice, medyo walang routine. Anyhow, they were able to show their best. - JP Yu BSA Rep

Better man ung sa EA. - Amiel Pampanga, 1st year Nashock kasi hindi EA ang nanalo - 3rd year BSA girls Approve pero 2nd dapat ang NSM. Dapat tie ang NSM at BSA - 1st year BSA girls

In fairness to everybody, magaling ang EA. Deserving pud sila. Siguro nga bitter sila kasi they deserve the title. - BSA_ako FACULTY

I heard there was some sort of anomaly, that the EA should win. Riki should not be part of it, it should have been given to the SAMAHAN because it is a students’ activity. The question is who were the judges, are they friends with the OSA director - Sir Green Shirt, Faculty

I saw some parents I think there were five or six, they were not allowed to enter the court and I saw one of my students and signal them to let the parents come in… the parents were from Mati, as I heard. So far so good kasi nakasali ang faculty sa mga games and the faculty enjoyed the fiesta also. BAHA sa Loob ng gym - Sir Lacoste “Ako’y naniniwala na the college of nursing and BSA, deserves to be the champion. But the Engineering should that they won the hearts of the people, pero ang puso ko sa EA. EA brought so much happiness in our hearts, personally” - Sir Lunar Fayloga E&A

At first bitter kami kay dapat kami nadaoog. Majority gani ng divisions kampi sa amo. Feel nako EA dpat. Pangit ang victory na ginag-contest ng majority. - Pael Cacayan, EA Rep

Fiesta started fair. Pero dahil sa nangyari sa rematch games ng EA, which we paid for it. I believe that the OSA director Sir Rikki took it personally. That is why, I can say, all other events na nag-follow dili na fair sa amoha. Kaya naggng bias siya against EA and ang proof kay daghan nakarinig sa iyaha na “I prayed for that. God is so gracious. From the start of the game I knew BM will win.” After ng rematch game ng EA and BM which hindi dapat marinig from an OSA director. If everyone, except for the winners believe that EA ang nanalo, kailangan jud i-review uli ang results.

In my opinion, I think that most people know kung sino dapat ang nanalo that night. I hope that the students would be able to get a hand of the score sheet para makita kung ano ba talaga ang scores and kung sino ba talga ang dapat na nanalo. - Toni Aqui - NSM

I feel really disappointed with the outcome of the judging. Did the judges overlook the criteria for their decision? I believe some entries deserved a better ranking. Some entries in the top five did not even deserve to be on their spots. The cries of the audience are testament to that. Jopay NSM

Siguro masasabi ko lng uhm. basta feel ko it was not the real result.. and sana parang give what is due to them nlng. sa akin kasi sinadya ni sir ricky na ichange ang result para hindi maging inferior ang ibang division so sana di nya gawing ganun and give what is due to them tlga we all work hard gud, yun lang. - Malbert - NSM sana ea or ns nanalo. at ang pangit na tie yong champion.. Jed Rama - NSM

Personally, I believe that EA should’ve been the champion. They had a very clean routine that at the same time was very entertaining. They also managed to capture the hearts of the audience, as evidenced by the very loud cheers for EA. I also believe BM and CS should’ve been part of the Top 5. I guess, Accountancy and Nursing won because they had a routine that was truly cheerdance in nature, as compared to that of EA’s na more of tricks, stunts, and humorous moves. Pero between the two, and keeping that premise in mind, I believe Nursing should’ve been the champion. I mean, Nursing and Accountancy’s routines were typical cheerdance, but then, I beg to disagree with what the judges said that no one of the two is better than the other. I believe, as I said, keeping that premise in mind, Nursing’s routine was better than Accountancy’s. Jonathan Nasser - NSM One will always scream, cheer and shout for one’s division, no doubt about that. - but when one realizes that another division is indeed worthy of praise, then that simply means that the beauty of the presentation broke the barriers between competing divisions. were the standing ovations and the thunderous claps from different divisions not enough? torraccagimeht - NSM hindi ako nakapanood ng cheerdance pero i think ok lang ang results. hehe. nahatag nman ang results so mao na to. - chem boy2 - NSM give what is due. yun lang. :) rachelle ciudadano - NSM PHILO

I think it was far from being a successful fiesta Celebration. It was too short, and I would say that the excitement was felt by so few. - Kimberly Salvana, 2nd year

COLLISION, FROM PAGE 2 poor conduct”. Mr. Enriquez then emphasized that the meeting is about the complaints of the EA to his office. He added that Mr. Licudan’s statements are beyond the agenda of the meeting. Palarong Pinoy, Star Search The OSA director also clarified the issue about the Palarong Pinoy. “I agreed with the SAMAHAN to have it [Palarong Pinoy] part of the over-all ranking. The reason why we didn’t include it during the announcements is because there was no banner”, said Mr. Enriquez as he consulted with his staff. However, Mr. Cacayan replied that all they wanted was proper recognition for the Palarong Pinoy. The original complaint cited that “To compete and discover how one’s skills measure up against others can be said to be the reason for the existence of sports and to deprive the students who took up in the events the knowledge of who the winners were is to deprive all their efforts of meaning and significance”. For the Starsearch issue, the EA complained that “Ms. Cynthia Tuazon had as much right [to sing during the awarding ceremonies held in the night of Sayawtenista] to stand on the stage and perform that right as the other winners and denying her this opportunity does much to undermine the virtues that Ateneo teaches”. The OSA clarified this issue since the Sayawtenista program was already planned even before the winners were announced. “We thought of a singer to sing without us knowing they’re gonna win”, said Mr. Enriquez. “They were introduced as winners during the awards night because it would be unfair not to recognize that they won the Starsearch”, he added. Unsettled Issues Mr. Enriquez, said that he would meet with the Fiesta Committee to include the points raised during the meeting. The OSA director will also include the proposals by the EA division, through the Division Chair Engr. Jenith Banluta, such as the inclusion of a banner for the Palarong Pinoy to recognize the efforts of the students during awarding ceremonies. Engr. Banluta also proposed that the OSA should be more strict in checking the player’s list in Intramurals to avoid future violations. “I appeal to you [the boardroom assembly] can we end this and move on? Thanks for raising the issues. It has been clarified.” as Mr. Enriquez ended the boardroom meeting. However, Miss Lumapas disagreed. “Personally, some of the issues were clarified. But then again, the first and the fourth were not clarified enough. There were still questions, regarding the validity of the no timeouts. And for the last issue, I felt that it is an insufficient reason. There is a fine line for cheering for one division, but to say na “makipagpustahan ako”, it really shows onesidedness. He should’ve been more careful of his actions”. “I think it will depend on the EA people if they want to elevate this to a higher body. The last say is on EA because they are the one complaining”, she added. “We are also planning to file another issue regarding the conduct of the OSA director. His behavior has been under question for quite some time and it’s a recurring a problem. It’s not a personal attack to the OSA director, that’s why we are drafting the issue carefully to be as objective as possible”, she concluded.
