Dear Friends,
You should be proud! This has been a year of incredible impact at the Ascension St. Vincent Foundation. Thanks to your unwavering support and commitment to our Mission, we reached a record fundraising level for our Foundations. Most importantly, this translates into more lives touched and improved, all because of you!
Through my years with the Ascension St. Vincent Foundation, I’ve seen the meaningful impact contributions like yours have had in the local communities we serve. With Ascension St. Vincent Foundations across the state, our purpose is to serve and support all Ascension St. Vincent ministries in Indiana. 100% of donations made to benefit the Ascension St. Vincent Foundation directly supports the program, service, and hospital you select.
In this report you will learn about the people who have been impacted by these designations:

• Cole, a thriving 9-year old, whose life depended on the donor-funded ECMO machine when he was born at Ascension St. Vincent Women’s Hospital in Indianapolis
• Brandon, a father in southern Indiana, who is grateful that his son with autism is able to receive care through the Mobile Dental Clinic when it visits his school
• The approximately 2,000 children who benefited from the Peyton Manning Children’s - St. John’s Children’s Clinic at Ascension St. Vincent Anderson last year when their family couldn’t afford routine physicals, general medical care and vaccinations
• Bethany, a patient care tech at Ascension St. Vincent Kokomo, who was one of 63 associates across Indiana who received a scholarship to continue their education in order to provide the best care possible for our patients in the future
And these are just a few of the many lives you have changed. I am excited for you to see the tremendous impact being made across the state in our different Ascension St. Vincent ministries because of philanthropy as you continue to read.
Thank you for your generosity, and thank you for the important role you’ve played in our Ascension St. Vincent story. Your continued involvement ensures that programs and services that depend on philanthropy are available for our patients and families who need them most.
With most appreciation,

Vincent

Meet a few Ascension St. Vincent patients who are grateful for their care
Katy Lewis learned she had breast cancer when she was 26 years old. After six rounds of chemotherapy and five surgeries at Ascension St. Vincent Kokomo, Katy is cancer free and fulfilling her passion as a middle school art teacher. Katy said she formed a special bond with the care teams at Ascension St. Vincent: “I was treated with care and compassion, and something they gave me was hope.”

Tony Dingle was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome when he was 3 years old. Now, he’s paying it forward by donating toys to kids at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital. Tony dreams of one day finding a cure as a pediatric nephrologist.

Nick and Carrie Kleiman both had rare brain bleeds resulting in surgeries–something most couples don’t share in common. Nick experienced a sudden subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm at the age of 34, while Carrie later discovered she had an arteriovenous malformation (AVM), a rare abnormality in the brain’s blood vessels. Both underwent successful brain surgeries at Ascension St. Vincent and are doing well today, defying the rarity of their conditions. Scan the QR code to learn more about Nick and Carrie’s story.

Caiden Stewart came to Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital after a soccer injury. Grateful for the care provided by Dr. Little, he wanted to do something special to support other kids. Caiden hosted a hot chocolate stand and donated the funds to help others.

Marybeth Weatherhead experienced a heart attack caused by spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) during her pregnancy with her triplets. Specialized care and expertise were crucial in recognizing and treating this life-threatening condition, and safely delivering her triplets, Henry, Penelope and Archie. Scan the QR code to learn more about Marybeth’s experience.

Siblings Emma and Caleb tackle diabetes head on
Glasses and a love for running aren’t the only things siblings Emma and Caleb Schroering share. Emma (14) and Caleb (12) live with type 1 diabetes and receive care at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital Pediatric Endocrinology Clinic in Evansville.
Thanks to funding from a generous donor endowment, diabetic children are getting the help they need. Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital in Evansville launched a new program aimed at tackling childhood obesity, a contributing factor in childhood diabetes – the All in Wellness Program
The eight-week program for children ages 2-18 is the only one of its kind in southern Indiana and features a

personalized approach to wellness for each child. Families receive nutrition and lifestyle coaching, along with medical expertise from a Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital pediatric specialist.
This program is having a significant impact! Here are a few notes received from grateful patient families about the program.
“This program was wonderful and so interactive. We loved the individual attention for my child’s needs.”
“Being an athlete, nutrition is so important to Bryce. He has learned a lot in this program he can utilize.”

Barbara Ann’s lifetime of caring continues in her legacy

Barbara Ann Riggs led a life of servant leadership. A life member of the Ascension St. Vincent Anderson Victoria Guild and active member since 1978, she completed 20,000 volunteer hours at Ascension St. Vincent Anderson shortly before her passing on April 7, 2023—a milestone never before reached by a hospital volunteer.
Barbara Ann was born May 23, 1927 in Anderson. She retired from the Delco Remy Division of General Motors after 48 years in the sales and advertising department. She and her sister, Wilma, served many Madison County organizations throughout their lifetime. They both served on the Ascension St. Vincent Anderson Foundation board, of which Barbara Ann served six terms (18 years) on the Foundation board, in addition to volunteering for organizations such as The Anderson Noon Exchange Club, Madison County Historical Society, Gruenwald Historic House, and YWCA simultaneously.
“Barbara Ann has been the angel of giving for Ascension St. Vincent for decades. Her love and dedication to the hospital can never be replaced.”
-Barb Vetor, Past Victoria Guild President and Foundation donor
The hospital was very special to Barbara Ann, and she wanted to be able to make a gift that allowed her to have the biggest impact for years to come. Prior to her passing, Barbara Ann decided to include the Ascension St. Vincent Anderson Foundation in her will. She
appreciated the flexibility that this giving option gave her while she was still living. Barbara Ann’s generous donation is now being used to meet the current priority needs and serve others in the hospital.
Barbara Ann’s legacy lives on through this meaningful donation. As best said by Ascension St. Vincent Anderson Board Chair and donor Don Apple, “She believed in helping others in need. Whether it was children suffering at the hands of abuse or her dedication to the poor in need of healthcare, she gave of her time and her financial resources to ensure that her gifts made a lasting difference in the lives of others.”

Baby Cole’s life was saved thanks to specialized equipment made possible by donors Years later he is thriving because of you!
“He was supposed to be a healthy baby,” recalls Lyndsey Abshire of her full-term, eight-pound newborn. In 2014, Cole was born via scheduled Cesarean section and Lyndsey thought she knew what to expect. But Cole had a severe complication. From the moment he was born, he was unable to breathe due to congenital pneumonia.
For two days, doctors used a series of advanced devices to pump air in and out of Cole’s lungs. His blood still wasn’t getting enough oxygen. That’s when doctors moved him from the NICU at Ascension St. Vincent Women’s Hospital to Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, where he received lifesaving ECMO therapy—a machine that acted as the heart and lungs for Cole, and was funded by generous donations to the Foundation.
After four long days, Cole’s tiny body came off the ECMO machine with an ability to maintain a healthy blood oxygen level on his own. Nearly one month after receiving the ECMO therapy, Cole went home and finally met his older brother, Gage. “He never gave up then, and has that same spirit today,” Lyndsey said.
Looking back, Lyndsey said the Women’s Hospital where she was recovering “might as well have been on the other side of the world” from Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital. That’s why she is especially appreciative of plans to build the Women and Children’s Tower and co-locate the facilities.
Today, Cole is a happy, energetic 9-year old who turns every moment into an adventure. He loves life, just like any kid his age should.
“If he had been born at any other hospital, he would not have survived.” -Lyndsey Abshire, Grateful patient and mom

AND NOW

Transforming healthcare for tomorrow
Three major projects, announced in 2021, are underway on the 86th Street campus of Ascension St. Vincent in Indianapolis. These initiatives embody our commitment to delivering comprehensive, complex regional healthcare that serves the local community and beyond.
Relocation of Ascension St. Vincent Women’s Hospital: In an effort to create a more integrated healthcare environment, Ascension St. Vincent Women’s Hospital is being relocated to connect to Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital. The groundbreaking for the new Women and Children’s Tower, which features 109 private Newborn Intensive Care Unit rooms, took place in the summer of 2022. This transformation will enable us to provide the highest level of care for both moms and babies under one roof, promoting improved patient outcomes and allowing families to remain together during treatment and healing. The tower is expected to open its doors in 2024.

Creation of a Brain and Spine Hospital: As part of our commitment to delivering state-of-the-art care, we are developing a new Brain and Spine Hospital that will complement our existing Level 1 Trauma Center at Ascension St. Vincent. This facility will provide advanced neurosurgical and neurointerventional care, leveraging the latest clinical research, technological advancements, and evidence-based medicine. The groundbreaking for this project occurred in the fall of 2022, with the hospital’s grand opening slated for 2024.
Expanded Parking Facilities: To ensure an exceptional patient and visitor experience, expanded parking options including a new parking garage and additional lot surface parking have been completed. Our newly constructed parking garage and additional surface lots, completed in September 2022, have enhanced accessibility and convenience.

Peyton Manning Children’s –St. John’s Children’s Clinic
Impacting children’s health in Anderson for 50 years
The vision for Peyton Manning Children’s – St. John’s Children’s Clinic began with an emergency room patient’s rat bite. Recognizing the dire living conditions in the area, hospital representatives collaborated with Anderson College and the Community Action Council to brainstorm solutions. Results from over 1,300 door-todoor surveys and focus groups revealed many families couldn’t afford school physicals and immunizations for their children. The Children’s Clinic was a simple and perfect response, and one that has garnered the support of thousands over the past 50 years.
Since 1973, Peyton Manning Children’s – St. John’s Children’s Clinic at Ascension St Vincent Anderson has been the answer for families who might otherwise be deciding between food on the table or immunizations for their children. The support of generous Foundation donors over the years has allowed the Clinic to provide

life-changing care to the families of Madison County and its surrounding communities. The Clinic provides routine physicals, medical care for minor illnesses and injuries, and vaccinations to prevent childhood diseases to approximately 2,000 children annually. When children have a serious or chronic illness or injury, the Children’s Clinic also steps in—providing referrals to specialists who will provide free care or assistance with financing.
For nearly 18 of its 50 years, the Clinic was staffed entirely by associate and physician volunteers. Sister Mary Brooks, hospital administrator when the Clinic began, said the concept of an all-volunteer staff was viewed with skepticism. “Many thought it would never work,” she said. As it evolved, though, people throughout the community were looking for ways to volunteer and donate.

Thank you for your support, which has made this clinic possible over the years!

Ascension St. Vincent Mobile Dental Clinic makes a difference for children in Indiana’s southern region thanks to you
Since its launch in 2000, Ascension St. Vincent Mobile Dental Clinic has provided dental care to children in need at Tri-State schools throughout southern Indiana. Treatment barriers such as insurance, transportation, and a lack of services in counties are eliminated because of the mobile clinic. The Clinic is able to provide this lifechanging care because of the support of generous donors.
On average, 3,500 school-aged children are seen through the clinic per year, primarily in Vanderburgh, Warrick, Posey and Gibson counties. Routine exams, preventative care, as well as restorations, stainless steel crowns, and extractions are provided.
Mobile Dental Clinic parent, Brandon, shares this about his experience: “The Mobile Dental Clinic is a wonderful asset to Ascension St. Vincent Evansville and the surrounding community. My son has been a patient with the Dental Clinic for three years. He is autistic and loves the staff and we as parents love the care he receives at the clinic. It is very convenient for parents to not have to take off from work to take their children to the dentist, they can get their exams, fillings, and x-rays, all at the clinic while it is at their school.”
Thank you for helping us put a smile on the faces of the children we serve!

Sim baby – “Val” – provides hands on education
Did you know – Indiana ranks number three in the nation for maternal deaths?
To combat this, Ascension St. Vincent Women’s Services staff and OB Physicians participate in simulations around OB hemorrhage and severe hypertension –risk factors during labor and delivery.
Veronica Collins, Women’s Services Educator, states, “Performing simulations with our multidisciplinary healthcare team is extremely beneficial. Nurses, physicians, and tech’s, despite our educational backgrounds and experiences, come together to work harmoniously at the bedside.”
New
Simulations are particularly helpful in practicing serious situations that are not commonly seen by caregivers. After each simulation, the group participates in valuable debriefs.
Thank you to our 2022 Heritage Open sponsors for your support of our Women’s Services fund. Through your generosity, a new sim mother, sim baby and additional equipment for the Simulation Lab have been purchased. This updated equipment is vital to providing the highest quality patient outcomes for the women and newborns we serve.

EMS scholarship is available,
with special thanks to Evansville Surgical Associates

A new EMS Scholarship is available! Through a generous donation from Evansville Surgical Associates, we are able to offer financial support for those who are studying to become an EMT or Paramedic.
Our EMS professionals are the first faces of Ascension St. Vincent that some patients see. They are the frontline of excellent and compassionate care on the way to the emergency department.
This scholarship will help create a pipeline of professionals in emergency medicine. The scholarship will help us identify internal candidates who would be great EMTs. It will also help identify our best EMTs and financially support their path to becoming a Paramedic.
“We are very excited about the ability to offer this new EMS scholarship! There is an ever growing need for EMS professionals in our region to be able to respond to 911 calls and to be able to safely transfer patients from one facility to another. This scholarship through the Ascension St. Vincent Evansville Foundation will allow us to grow and develop these resources to continue to care for our community for years to come!”

“On January 6 of this year, Dr. Weaver and PA Brown treated me for a subdural hematoma. During surgery and my hospital stay, they were caring, reassuring, and attentive. I am indeed grateful for their professional skill. They saved my life.” -Janet W. in honor of David Weaver, MD and Jeff Brown, PA-C
Pediatric patient receives life changing medication
A young man came into Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital Center for Children in Evansville with a very difficult to treat infection. Providers helped identify the perfect antibiotic to help get him back on track with his healing journey. That antibiotic was denied by his insurance. It cost thousands of dollars and his parents couldn’t possibly pay out-of-pocket. That’s where donors to the Ascension St. Vincent Evansville Foundation came in. Through generous donations made to the Care of the Poor fund, providers were able to put in an order for the specific medication he needed free of charge to the family. This boy is now back to being healthy, all because of you!

Ascension St. Vincent Evansville Foundation Board Members, Lane Young and Justin Soderlund, check out new cribs made possible by donors like you! Sharyn Townsend, Director of Pediatrics, shares that these new cribs allow for better patient care and a much more comfortable healing experience.

The Ascension St. Vincent Evansville Foundation is a vessel by which God’s love and grace can be shared with all who pass through the doors of Ascension St. Vincent, as well as those in the communities that Ascension St. Vincent serves. The foundation allows people and organizations to contribute to this healing mission and make meaningful differences in the lives of so many. It is an honor to support in my small way the great work done every day by so many talented and caring people.” - Otha Warren, Foundation Board member and donor

Kokomo Birthing Center designated Baby-Friendly® Hospital Gifts
to the Birthing Center make new equipment possible
Birthing Center Manager, Julie Ward, and her staff worked diligently over the last four years to achieve a Baby-Friendly® designation for Ascension St. Vincent Kokomo’s Birthing Center. They are one of 24 hospitals in Indiana to achieve this designation, with the hope of improving the infant mortality rate in the communities they serve. Indiana is currently ranked 4th highest in the United States for infant mortality.
Hospital and birthing facilities must adhere to the “ten steps to successful breastfeeding” in order to receive and retain a Baby-Friendly® designation. The requirements focus on staff’s sufficient knowledge, competence and skills to support breastfeeding and sharing the importance of breastfeeding with pregnant and new mothers.
The 562 babies born last year at Ascension St. Vincent Kokomo and their new mothers greatly benefited from the newfound knowledge received as part of the designation. Gifts from Foundation donors provided resources to update equipment, such as the recently purchased cardiac infant monitor and in past yearsinfant monitors, biliblankets for jaundiced babies, and infant warmers.
Donations to the Tiny Miracles fund also help purchase needed items for the Birthing Center. This fund gives families an opportunity to make a donation and honor or remember their loved baby with a tile on the wall.

“We purchased a tile in memory of our stillborn granddaughter, Georgia Grace. Almost a year to the date, my daughter gave birth to her twin boys, Carter and Benjamin. I purchased two additional tiles to honor the boys, so they could be recognized alongside their big sister. The boys are healthy six-month old babies and we are grateful for the care my daughter and her family received from Dr. Steven Hott and the Ascension St. Vincent Kokomo Birthing Center staff.” -Valorie Clouse, Grandmother and Ascension St. Vincent Kokomo Foundation donor
