First Competitions of the Season

Women’s Volleyball

Alli Lobach, Secretary

The spring season is off to a roaring start! This past week, two teams travelled to Columbia, SC to participate in a tournament at the University of South Carolina. Team Greenway started off strong in the morning pool, winning two out of three of their matches. In the afternoon wave they battled with tough competition. Team Beech struggled to find their footing in the morning wave, but ended up finishing the day second in the silver bracket. They played hard and put up some incredible rallies against a stacked front line from USC. This coming weekend, Team Linville will be heading to the beach for a tournament at UNCWilmington. It will be exciting to see what these girls can achieve. The following weekend, Team Sugar and Team Blue Ridge will see their first competition at Western Carolina. As our teams all await their chance to compete, we have all been putting the work in at practice. We have high hopes for this volleyball season!

The New-Look Women’s Club Basketball Team Competes at NC State Women’s Basketball Valesha Province, Secretary

The Women’s Club Basketball team traveled to NC State February 7-8th to participate in the 2020 Raleigh Rumble Tournament. We started off strong on Saturday, defeating UNC White and UNC Greensboro – both by a large margin. We then fell in a close contest to NC State Black, ending 2-1 on the day. We were placed as the 4th seed of 13 teams going into the tournament Sunday. Well rested, we defeated UNC White once again, in a close contest that came down to clutch free-throws from veteran player Courtney Burkhard. However, we fell to a talented Clemson team in the following round, which sent us home. We came into that weekend with 7 healthy players and showed a lot of effort and teamwork. Our numbers are lacking this semester, but we’re making up for it with strategic game plans, team work and a lot of energy. Our next competition is a home-debut March 28-29th at the Student Recreation Center on campus. We have a lot of time in between for practice and improvement. A total of 10 teams signed up, and are excited to showcase our new playing style and have a home-court advantage. photo credit: George, Steven

Finishing the Season Kelly McFeeley, Club Sports Representative

With the new semester in full swing, the equestrian team is finishing up a fantastic season that began back in the fall. All three disciplines have placed very well and are excited to end their seasons on a high note. Beginning with the western team, their first show of the semester was at St. Andrews the first weekend in February. Rachel Flake placed both third and fourth in Level One Horsemanship. Meanwhile Taylor Wooten placed fourth twice in Rookie A Horsemanship. At their most recent competition at the NC State/ Martin Community College show, Flake placed second in Level One Horsemanship. The last competition finished out their season, allowing them to exit on a high note. Dressage closed out their season on a very high note this last weekend. Senior Neicy Decker placed fifth in both Test and DSE Lower Training, Megan Weil placed first for her Intro Test class, and Ryan Carroll placed fourth in Intro DSE. Overall, the AppState dressage team placed fifth in the region, Jess Reimer

Equestrian placed fifth in the region in Upper Training, and Neicy Decker placed fourth in the region for Lower Training. Continuing their strong season with several members placing in their events, as well as pointing out and moving up in their classes the hunt seat team moves forward. Senior Amy Perkinson placed first in her Introductory Flat class. Fellow senior Kayla Gunter placed third in her Novice Flat class. Adena Mangrum pointed out of her division after receiving fourth in her Limit Over Fences class which qualified for regionals. Caroline McAtee placed second in her Novice Flat and also qualified for regionals. Hunt seat will be finishing up their season this weekend with their last competition on Saturday, and regionals on Sunday. Congratulations to all three teams for their fantastic seasons! We wish the hunt seat team luck as they travel to their last competition and regionals and say thank you to all the riders of the dressage and western teams for all their hard work!

Mid-Season Slump Charlotte Murphy, Club Sports Representative

As of right now the women’s club rugby team is struggling to keep the team going. The players, captains, and officers all work day and night to keep the team afloat, but it is proving to be a difficult task. With the spring of 2020 season already underway we have been consistently behind on numbers, and in turn have yet to play a game. The officers of the team have decided that it may be best for everyone if we were to cut practice times down to only two days a week. These days will be on Tuesday and Thursday with any extra work being held outside those windows. The team is also contemplating whether or not we will be able to compete in any matches this season that are qualified as

Women’s Rugby matrix matches. Hopefully we will be able to pull together some more numbers and kick out a fantastic season, but for now the team is sticking to the basics. All in all, everyone is working day and night to make this season the best it can be. The team may also start looking for new fundraising ideas to keep everyone occupied. If you have any suggestions please let us know! If you would like to contact our team for sponsorships, fundraisers, or more information follow our Instagram @aho_ wrfc or check out our website at https:// clubsports.appstate.edu/ on the club sports webpage!

Tournament Time! Bayne, Nicholas, President

Fencing

Tournament season has officially begun for the Fencing Club! After an unfortunate dry patch during the fall semester, the fencing club will be entering in numerous events starting with NC State on February 23th. We are ecstatic to finally get back into the grind and compete against our friends over at the Wolfpack. Our next event will be at the Tiger Open over at Clemson. We have also managed to receive two new members, Junior Michael DeVore and Sophomore Chandler Haneke. Both show a lot of promise and are able to keep up with the strenuous conditioning and drills. Overall, we excited to get back to our bread and butter, learn get stronger and fight hard!

Spring Season Competitions Women’s Lacrosse Sam Pawlovich, Club Council Rep

As the spring season is beginning for Women’s Lacrosse, we are coming closer and closer to starting our competition season. For Women’s Lacrosse a majority of our games come in the form of tournaments, but each tournament is different. Another change is that Women’s Lacrosse is now in the D1 section, which adds the expected level of play. Not only are the locations different there are always different teams to play against, different weather conditions, different players to go against, and different players that you will be playing with, as well. With each tournament there is always a specific feeling that can be used to describe them. Last year at the UNC Wilmington Tournament I remember just how beautiful it felt to go from playing on the fields, hustling to get to score goals, to going to the beach with my fellow teammates and simply enjoying the day. And this year at the NC State Tournament the word for me was

hot. The temperature had flared in Raleigh, while Boone remained in the mid 40s. To say the least, I was unprepared for the high temperatures and extra effort that it required. Although I remember the NC State Tournament as hot, I also remember having a lot of fun hanging out on the field before and in between games and back at the hotel as well. Again, we are at a different college and a different set of teams to play against. We will be playing at the UNC Chapel Hill Tournament from February 29th to March 1st. We have been practicing hard to prepare for the tournament and cannot wait to see what it holds for us. There are new girls on the team this semester and it is always interesting and fun to be able to see how players will connect passes and plays to accomplish a shared goal. When those connections happen, you can see the player’s eyes light up in recognition of an even greater season to come.

CS Executive Corner Grifffin Mercer Wednesday, Feburary 19,2019

EXECUTIVE CORNER

Hello everyone! I’m Griffin Mercer, leader of 2/19/20 Club Sports Council. At this week’s council, we challenged teams to create ideas for upcoming team officer elections. Representatives split into four groups and answered questions about the fairness of officer elections. After discussions were led, each group presented their findings and recommendations to the council. The main concerns of teams centered around voter participation and appropriate campaigning. Each group’s notes were collected to be analyzed and turned into recommendations for all officers. As teams begin to hit full stride for this semester, forms and budget meetings have been our main concern in the office. Executive Officers have been hard at work on our semester projects as well. Symposium is scheduled for Sunday, April 26th and the Club Sports Banquet will be the following Monday, April 27th. The New Executive Officer Form is now available to club sports officers. It will be available until March 18th. Once nominees are submitted, applications will be filled out for the Club Sports Council to review and approve. We are excited for the opportunity to set the program up for success in the coming year. Make sure you check out the team store now available online at https://www. bsnteamsports.com/shop/AppClub20. We have a lot of exciting things coming up in the world of club sport. Good luck to all competing teams this semester. Thanks for reading and Go Apps!
