Leiston’s Long Shop Museum has been awarded over a million pounds of public funding to protect and secure the fabric of this icon of Suffolk’s industrial heritage. As part of the second round of awards from the Museum Estate and Development (MEND) fund, the museum will receive the money needed to fulfil a comprehensive programme of repairs and restoration to the 250-yearold buildings.
The chair of museum trustees, Angela Leonard, commented ‘The work is essential in order to preserve these unique buildings, and the collections they hold. This project is the result of careful planning and preparation, and we are thrilled that DCMS and Arts Council England have recognised the cultural and commercial benefits that this award will bring to East Suffolk.’
The project will be delivered over 24 months while allowing the museum to remain open as normal during its April –October season. As well as addressing urgently needed repairs to roofs, walls and windows, the work will also result in the museum’s buildings being more accessible and sustainable.

Museum Director, Fraser Hale, said ‘This award means that we can again look confidently forward; now that the future of the buildings and collections is secure, we can begin development and fundraising for our planned programme of new displays, hybrid learning activities, and further community support & collaboration schemes.’
