Dear Friends, An Olympic year always brings inspiration and even more energy to our mission at Asphalt Green — and what an incredible year we have had! While we have much to celebrate at home, we were thrilled to see our own Lia Neal win her second Olympic medal in Rio this summer. Along the way, she broke through barriers of time and demography, becoming only the second African-American female swimmer to win an Olympic medal. Lia’s history is our story. Lia grew up at Asphalt Green, beginning her swimming career at age 8 on the Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics (AGUA) Swim Team. Thanks to our committed donors, Lia was fully supported through our Swim for the Future scholarship program and grew from eager newbie to Olympic star. Today, she is a role model as co-captain of the Stanford University Women’s Swim Team and a stand-out student. We are so proud of Lia’s many accomplishments, and she is proof positive that sports and fitness make a difference — all we need are the resources to make it happen. Lia is our hallmark success story, and she inspires us to keep working for more. Today, Asphalt Green serves 33,000 New York City children through our community programs, as well as large numbers of adults through our senior fitness programs. Of course, this work requires constant improvement to our physical locations. This year, we completed a top-to-bottom renovation of the Murphy Center, including exciting new facilities for AG6™ (a favorite amongst our fittest members), dedicated Pilates Reformer studio, and an already-fully-booked indoor turf. The AquaCenter is now partway through its upgrade, including new elevator systems and refreshed locker rooms — all necessary given our heavy traffic. All of this is thanks to you. We feel the responsibility to spend every donated dollar carefully and with an eye toward the long-term, just as we feel the pressing obligation to do even more for New Yorkers from underserved areas. As Lia’s story proves, participating in safe, organized, quality athletics through our free community programs can be a game changer for a child, allowing her to realize her full potential in all aspects of life. We are ready for 2017, determined to do even more, and hoping to have your support as we drive forward. Thank you for making Asphalt Green such a special place. Sincerely,

Andy Nussbaum

SUMMER 2015

#powerofsports

Kids and Families Inspired to Get Out and Active at Sprinkler Day We opened our facility to the public, turned on our sprinklers, and let kids splash around! With free access to an open field, we motivated families to get out and get moving, even on hot summer days. 2

Why Sports and Fitness Matter 2.6 million fewer children ages 6 to 12 play sports today than in 2008. Adolescents who play sports are eight times more likely

to be active at age 24.* * ASPEN INSTITUTE

Campers Raise a Record-Breaking $22,000 for Summer Day Camp Scholarships Children learned the importance of giving back by participating in our annual Coins for Campers fundraiser. In one week, children raised $22,000 for camp scholarships, giving those from all economic backgrounds the opportunity to experience the Asphalt Green summer camp program.

Camp Scholarship Recipient Discovers Love for Sports at Summer Day Camp Prior to attending camp, scholarship recipient Laila was not active and had no interest in sports. She was introduced to athletics at Asphalt Green. Now, camp is over, but she is constantly asking her parents to go outside and play. Her parents credit her change in attitude toward fitness to Summer Day Camp.

Asphalt Screams Draws 4,000 for Halloween Fun and Fitness We traded candy for fun, active games at Asphalt Screams. Families and kids of all ages visited our facilities in costume and participated in a variety of Halloween-themed activities on our outdoor fields.

Swim for the Future Awards 275 Scholarships Since its Inception 2015 marked the 14th anniversary of the Swim for the Future scholarship, created in honor of two Asphalt Green Masters Swim Team members — Andrew Fisher and Doug Irgang — who tragically lost their lives on 9/11. Since 2001, the program has awarded over $550,000 in scholarships, giving talented young athletes the opportunity to compete on our swim team. 4

Seniors From Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center Report Feeling Stronger, More Energetic Since beginning the Senior Fitness program at Asphalt Green, many seniors from Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center have reported better balance, strength, confidence, speed, and more energy.

The program has given me energy and courage to do things, and I appreciate being here. It’s awesome!

Girl Power: Sixth Grader Denise Shines in Flag Football Community Sports League Sixth grader Denise always looked up to her older brother. When he signed up for Asphalt Green’s flag football community sports league, she did too. Only a handful of girls play in the league, but that didn’t stop Denise from proving she was one to watch. She made big plays each week on both sides of the ball, and at the end of the season, she was the only sixth grader — out of all the boys and girls — voted by her peers to play the Pro Bowl game.

WINTER 2015

Snowman Showdown Draws 300 for a Free, Family Friendly Day of Winter Fun Chilly weather does not stop us from getting active outside! After the first heavy snowfall of the year, we invited the public to our athletic field to build snowmen and release energy with friends and family. This year, we upped the ante on participants’ snowman-building skills by introducing a Sportiest Snowman contest. 6

New Design Middle School Raises the Bar in Basketball Community Sports League New Design Middle School has been dominant in our basketball community sports league for the past two years, going undefeated and winning the championship in spring 2016. The Harris Family Charitable Foundation fully funds the league, and we are able to provide more opportunities for students because of its generous contribution.

Why Sports and Fitness Matter Physically active students perform better academically and behaviorally.* * ASPEN INSTITUTE

Teachers Report Improved Test Scores and Behavior After Implementing Recess Enhancement Program (REP) Prior to implementing Asphalt Green’s Recess Enhancement Program (REP) at P.S. 194M, fourth-grader Jon was causing fights with students, and he was not doing well academically. Once REP was introduced, Jon participated in organized games and got along with his classmates. Teachers noticed a change in his behavior; his test scores improved in all subject areas, and he was more focused and engaged in the classroom. 7

SPRING 2016

#powerofsports

First-Ever Big Swim Big Kick a Huge Success The free swim and soccer event raised over $900,000 to support our free community programs. This marked the first year we expanded the event to include soccer. Our goal was to introduce as many kids to sports as possible. At the end of the day, over 220 kids showed off their skills on our field, and more than 400 young athletes raced to the finish in our pool in a 25-yard swim meet.

Why Sports and Fitness Matter Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental deaths in children ages 5 to 9. Swim lessons reduce

drowning risk by 88 percent.* * USA SWIMMING

Asphalt Green Takes Over the News with Launch of Innovative, ArcadeStyle Workout AG6™, an arcade-style, circuitbased workout, is the first to use PRAMA by Pavigym technology in North America. Walls and floors light up and respond to touch, becoming your competitor, teammate, or target. The workout has been featured in The New York Times, Today Show, and People Magazine, among other media outlets.

Waterproofing Student Marvin Breaks Barriers in Pool and School When Marvin started our free learn-to-swim Waterproofing program, he was so afraid of water, he shivered at the sight of the pool. But each week, he attended determined to overcome his fear. One year later, Marvin has mastered floating, blowing bubbles, and can swim five yards. His teacher says he is more confident and focused in the classroom. He went from performing below grade level to at grade level in all subject areas.

Recess Enhancement Program (REP) Field Day Brings Fun and Fitness to Elementary School Students REP field day gives children in our community programs a fun and interactive experience on a large field. More than 80 REP play coaches, volunteers from Credit Suisse, and staff led games on our athletic field for over 200 students.
