ANNUAL REPORT 2020-2021

WELCOME Dear Friends, As a nonprofit, Asphalt Green is committed to providing access to the highestquality athletic programs and facilities for New Yorkers of all ages and backgrounds. The tens of thousands of people we serve every year come from different walks of life, but our dedication to them is the same; we improve lives through the power of sports and fitness. We take great pride in being able to offer world-class sports, fitness, and aquatics programs as well as free opportunities for children and adults at both of our campuses and throughout the five boroughs. This report highlights the accomplishments of our organization during the 2020-2021 fiscal year. Although our operations were impacted by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Asphalt Green persevered. In June of 2020 we hosted Summer Day Camp at our Upper East Side campus. We began reopening both our campuses to members in September of 2020 and grew to welcome over 3,000 annual members by the next month. Our Community Sports Leagues also returned in September, offering children from underserved middle schools the chance to play organized sports. Our Waterproofing program returned when our pools reopened later that year. Our Recess Enhancement Program returned to schools in April of 2021. Throughout the shutdown, our newly created online resource of over 50 socially distanced REP games reached over one million people worldwide. As we continue to focus on expanding our programs, we remind ourselves that Asphalt Green makes a profound difference in the lives of thousands of children and adults every day. Now, more than ever, it is important that we be able to offer our services to the community. We remain ever thankful for your generosity and your support. You make what we do possible, whether through your donations or your participation in our programs. We hope this report will inspire you to continue to support Asphalt Green. Sincerely,

Caroline Hribar

ABOUT ASPHALT GREEN Asphalt Green is committed to providing access to sports and fitness opportunities for all New Yorkers. As a nonprofit, we foster a love for physical activity in underserved communities. Our programs, which include sports leagues, swim lessons, and active recess, help kids develop physically, emotionally, and socially. Asphalt Green makes its outstanding programs and facilities available to all New York City residents through free programming and scholarships. Physical activity is more important now than ever. Studies show* that disruptions to kids' school environment during the pandemic have caused them to miss important academic and physical milestones. *McKinsey & Company

RECESS ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM REP addresses barriers to physical activity by reclaiming the most underutilized part of the school day - recess. Asphalt Green trains play coaches to lead over 150 organized games that get children physically active during recess. We bring our coaches to New York City schools where most students receive free or reduced-priced meals. Regular physical activity can help children and adolescents improve cardiorespiratory fitness, build strong bones and muscles, and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Active kids score up to 40 percent higher on test scores and are more likely to go to college. 4

WATERPROOFING Waterproofing is Asphalt Green's free swim instruction and water safety program for New York City public school students. Swimming is a life-saving skill, not a privilege. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1 to 14. We partner with schools in low-income neighborhoods where a majority of students receive free or reduced-priced meals to bring free swimming instruction to young New Yorkers.

Since 1994, over 35,000 students have learned to swim through Waterproofing.

COMMUNITY SPORTS LEAGUES Asphalt Green offers free flag football, basketball, and soccer leagues for middle school students through our Community Sports Leagues program. We partner with schools in low-income neighborhoods that have limited access to organized sports. Asphalt Green administers leagues at a low cost to schools and provides kids with free uniforms, professional referees, equipment, and instructional clinics with our coaches.

In the past decade, over 20,000 kids from New York City schools have played in Asphalt Green’s Community Sports Leagues.

ASPHALT GREEN STAFF LIVE THE MISSION Our staff know firsthand the difference that sports and fitness can make in the lives of the people they serve. Here are three of their stories.

STEPH SAVINO FEATURED STAFF

Island. It wasnt long before she got her first paid gig at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.

Steph Savino started at Asphalt Green volunteering as an assistant soccer coach in 2019. She had heard great things about the program. Asphalt Green's focus on the families and community drew her to the organization. Steph started playing soccer when she was 3 years old and it's been a huge part of her life ever since. She played competitively at Sienna College outside of Albany, NY, and continued to play after she graduated. While working in the fashion industry, she realized that she wanted soccer to be a part of her professional life as well. She accepted a job in marketing with Major League Soccer but still felt that her place was out on the field. So, in addition to her full-time job, she started coaching at her high school, Our Lady of Mercy on Long 6

More recently, Steph became the head coach of the girls u19 team at Asphalt Green in 2020. Her squad finished the season ranked twelfth in the state and competed in the State Cup Finals. That year, she also started a female empowerment mentorship program with Asphalt Green. On a monthly basis, she hosts a virtual meeting for all the female members of Asphalt Green Soccer Club with the goal of building confidence, increasing motivation, and strengthening mental toughness. One of her favorite parts of the program is mental share. Each player shares something based on the theme of the month, from topics as deep as the systemic challenges that females face in sports to upcoming holiday plans. There has been great feedback from families and players, and the program is now entering its second year. Without her players, Steph says, she wouldn't feel so much pride in what she does. They keep her focused and inspired. She takes joy in being the person they can come to if they need support, in soccer or in life.

TODD SOWELL FEATURED STAFF

and support of young athletes. "I didn't start playing AAU until sophomore year of high school," he recalls, "most people play AAU from 8 years old." Nevertheless, he quickly achieved distinction on his high school team and was recruited to play for St. Peter's University on a full-ride scholarship.

Todd started at Asphalt Green as a REP Coordinator. The hard work and dedication he learned from playing professional basketball saw him rise quickly to Senior REP Coordinator, REP Manager, Community Programs Manager, and then, most recently, to his position as Associate Director of Community Programs. To Todd, sports are everything. "I don't think I'd be anywhere without sports," he says. Todd grew up in New York City, playing everything you could think of: stickball, baseball, softball, basketball. But it wasn't until high school that he settled on the one that would define his life: basketball. Todd attended Bishop Laughlin Memorial High School, a school renowned for its track and basketball programs. An important milestone came when he joined the Amateur Athletic Union, an organization devoted to the promotion

Todd continued to excel on his college team. He credits sports not only with giving him a free education, but also with letting him see the world. The college paid for his first passport, and he fondly remembers standing on the Great Wall of China, where he had travelled for competition. After college he moved to Portugal, where he played professionally until a broken leg took him out of the action. He could have gone back to playing the sport full-time, but during rehab he started to consider his career options. Professional coaching wasn't his speed, so he started looking for ways to give back through the sport that had given him so much. Todd has spent almost a decade at Asphalt Green working in Community Programs, and he keenly feels the importance of service. "It's our job to keep Asphalt Green on mission," he says, "It's great to have the fee-based programs and generate revenue, but in community programs, we give everyone opportunity. I think opportunity is a key word."
