Who We Are

The Alabama School of Mathematics and Science is our state’s only fully public and residential high school for sophomores, juniors, and seniors seeking advanced studies in math, science, computer science, and the humanities. Tuition, room, and board are free. Nestled in Mobile’s beautiful Old Dauphin Way Historic District, ASMS was founded by the Alabama State Legislature in 1989 to better prepare Alabama’s future leaders.

Our Mission

ASMS provides academically motivated Alabama students with exceptional preparation in the fields of math and science, empowering them to improve their community, state, and nation.

Our Vision

We aspire to to be a premier institution offering worldclass learning, research, and leadership opportunities to Alabama students.

ASMS has given me so many opportunities to further my education, discover my true passions, and even have handson experience with conducting research. If it were not for ASMS, I would have never learned as much as I have, and I am definitely more prepared for the future!

RESEARCH FELLOWS COURSES

Going to ASMS not only was an amazing experience, both in terms of academics and campus life, but it also saved me thousands of dollars once I went to college. Because of the classes I took at ASMS, I managed to earn two years of college credits. I highly encourage anyone that not only wants to challenge themselves but also make progress towards there college career to consider ASMS.

What Sets ASMS Apart? Academics -- It’s the Heart of What We Do.

College-Level STEM Coursework

ASMS students take science, math, and computer science coursework equivalent to college freshmen and sophomore levels. Sample classes include: Marine Biology, Organic Chemistry, Number Theory, and Computational Materials Science. All science courses include a hands-on weekly lab.

Wilson Science Research Center

Our world class 32,000 square foot facility named after famous Alabamaian and “the father of biodiversity,” Dr. Edward O. Wilson, is the only college-level research facility on a high school campus in Alabama. The WSRC is designed to signficantly enhance opportunities for ASMS students to conduct research and participate in cutting edge learning experiences.

College Credit and Savings

As an ASMS student, you will gain access to AP courses, dual enrollment courses, and articulation agreements with universities. In other words, ASMS students have the potential to earn up to 2 years worth of college credit simply by taking courses already offered as part of the graduation curriculum at our school. ASMS graduates can save college tuition dollars on the credits they earn at ASMS or reach their goals for higher education even faster.

Faculty are Content Experts

66% of ASMS faculty hold terminal degrees such as doctorates in their subject areas. Most taught at the college level before coming to ASMS. Many remain active in their professional field by attending conferences and publishing their research. ASMS students study under experts and thought leaders.

Choose Your Own Academic Path

The ASMS curriculum offers students the ability to choose their areas of focus! With over 400+ courses offered each year, students can opt into the Honors or AP tracks in most subjects. 84% of ASMS AP students achieve a passing exam score. After completing graduation requirements, they can access a vast catalog of electives. Visit our online course catalog for a complete look at the ASMS courses offered.

Concentrations: Medical Sciences and Engineering

ASMS students can specialize in academic “concentrations” by taking many classes in a particular academic subject. Concentrations appear on final transcripts and on diplomas. ASMS also offers 2 interdisciplinary concentrations in Engineering and Medical Sciences for students to take high-level electives that provide them with the academic foundation needed for careers in engineering and medicine.

Research and Internships

Students may participate in the Research Fellows Program and work with a mentor who will guide them through a fulfilling research project. They may also work with the ASMS Research Coordinator to find summer internships or research program. These opportunities help ASMS students stand out during the college admissions process.

Resources to Help You Succeed

ASMS academic programs adapt to the needs of our students. The campus has nightly quiet hours for studying. Instructors keep open-door office hours to answer questions. Each subject features a study lab staffed with knowledgeable tutors. Counselors help struggling students find the individualized help they need. Through ACT prep workshops most students see their ACT scores rise 5-7 points with the average ACT score of a graduating senior being a 30.

Exceptional Arts and Humanities

ASMS students diversify their interests and express themselves by taking additional college-level courses like The Dystopian Novel, Women of the Renaissance, Advanced Digital Photography, and Theatre Production. Many ASMS students sing in the school choir, play an instrument in the school orchestra, or create in our on-campus art studio.

Living on campus in the residence halls at ASMS is an experience I would not trade for anything. I am ahead of the game because I gained experience in setting my own study schedule, cleaning up after myself, doing laundry, and all the other ways ASMS taught me to take care of myself. Residence life is a fantastic way ASMS adds an important dimension to educating students. It builds resilience, maturity, and community.
