Start Reading Swedish: Svenska hjältinnor

Virtual | Wednesdays, July 12–August 2, 5–6:30 pm

Read and discuss texts about important Swedish women from history from the book Svenska hjältinnor and participate in activities to support your reading and vocabulary building. This class, taught by Liz Stopka, is for students with at least one year of Swedish language study or equivalent. Class materials will be provided by the instructor. This summer’s class will feature different women than in previous summers. $60 ($50 ASI member)

Start Reading Swedish: Kvinnosaker

Virtual | Thursdays, July 13–August 3, 10–11:30 am

Read and discuss texts from the book Kvinnosaker (published by the Stockholm Museum of Women’s History) about important objects in women’s history, and participate in activities to support reading and vocabulary building. This class is taught by Liz Stopka and geared toward students with at least one year of Swedish language study or equivalent. Class materials provided by the instructor. $60 ($50 ASI member)

Sweden and the Welfare State: Swedish Literature

Virtual | Thursdays, July 13–August 3, 5:30–7 pm

Explore Swedish literature this summer! Over four weeks, this class will discuss the novel

Sveas son: En berättelse om folkhemmet (Son of Svea: A Tale of the People’s Home) by Lena Andersson together with instructor Gunn Edberg-Caldwell. The book can be read in either Swedish or English and class discussions will be in English. The books are not available in the ASI Museum Store but can be found at the library or online. $60 ($50 ASI member)

Swedish Landskap with Nils

Virtual | Mon, August 14–Mon, August 21, 10–11:30 am

Learn about each province of Sweden, from Skåne to Lappland, through the eyes of Nils Holgersson, a fictional boy who traveled on a goose’s back through all 25 landskap (regional landscapes) of Sweden. This course taught by Ingela Haaland will be in English. $30 ($25 ASI member)

Swedish Conversation: Intermediate

Virtual | Mondays, August 14–28, 6:30–8 pm

This class taught by Ingela Haaland is held in Swedish with support in English where needed. Students should be able to hold a simple conversation in Swedish about various subjects. We will focus on current events in Sweden, using Nyheter på lätt svenska and 8 Sidor as a basis for conversation. The class will also include other topics of conversation. Välkomna

Rivstart Review 2

Virtual | Mon, August 14–Wed, August 30, 4:30–6 pm

Would you like to review Rivstart A1/A2 before language classes start again in September? Did you take the June Beginning Rivstart class? The Rivstart Review Courses are designed to help students go back and patch any areas of study in which they feel rusty or uncertain. Rivstart Review 2 will focus on chapters 5–9. This class taught by Ingela Haaland meets twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays for three weeks. $90 ($80 ASI member)

Refresh your Swedish: Continuing Beginning Virtual | Tuesdays, August 15–September 5, 4:30–6 pm

Students at the Rivstart A kapitel 3 level or higher can get a head-start on their fall term studies in this fourweek class focused on the basics of Swedish grammar and vocabulary. This class, taught by Gregg White, will begin in chapter 8 of Learn Swedish, which takes an entirely different approach to the language. Required text: Learn Swedish - Swedish Reader for Beginners (Hildeman & Beite) not available in the ASI Museum Store. $60 ($50 ASI member)

Students at the Rivstart A kapitel 8 level or higher can get a head-start on their fall term studies in this fourweek class focused on the basics of Swedish grammar and vocabulary. Read a Swedish Novel Virtual | Wednesdays, August 16–September 6, 10–11:30 am

This class is held in Swedish for advanced students by instructor Ingela Haaland. Students will read Astrid Lindgren’s novel Samuel August från Svedstorp och Hanna i Hult, a collection of stories ranging from the endearing story of her parents’ lives together, to an intriguing story of Swedish immigrant Andrew Peterson’s life in Minnesota, to childhood memories of Astrid’s life in Småland. $60 ($50 ASI member)

Refresh your Swedish: Advanced Virtual | Thursdays, August 17–September 7, 5:30–7 pm

Students at the Rivstart A chapter 15 level or higher can get a head-start on their fall term studies in this four-week class that focuses reading and conversation taught by Gregg White. The class uses Sagor och sanningar (3rd edition), a text for those who already can speak and read Swedish fairly well but want a fresh approach. This class will begin with chapter 4. The book is available in the ASI Museum Store. $60 ($50 ASI member)

Swedish Hiking Club

In-Person | Saturdays, June 10, July 15, August 19, 9–11 am

Kom och prata svenska i naturen! This program is open to all levels of Swedish speakers, but please note that the class will stick to Swedish as much as possible. Conversation topics and activities will be prepared in advance. Bring your own fika. See instructor and meetup locations at asimn.org. $10 ($5 ASI member)

Morgondopp / Morning dip

In-Person | Fridays, July 7–28, 7:30–8:30 am

Back by popular demand, join Liz Stopka on four early Friday mornings in July for a morgondopp (morning dip) in the lake before starting the day. Meet the group at Lake Harriet South Beach. Bring your own coffee and stick around for a fika after the group swim. Free; no advanced registration required

Nature-Based Classes

Birding på svenska

In-Person | Fri, May 5–Sat, May 6, 6–7:30pm; 8–10 am

This two-part class taught by Rachel Willson-Broyles will introduce the Swedish names of some common Minnesota birds and give an overview of birds one might spot when in Sweden. Friday’s class will meet at ASI. Saturday’s class will meet outside at T.S. Roberts Bird Sanctuary near Lake Harriet in Minneapolis.

Gardening på svenska

In-Person | Sun, June 4, 10 am–12 pm

Increase your Swedish gardening vocabulary and get your hands in the soil with Swedish instructor and home-garden enthusiast Rachel Willson-Broyles. Learn some common gardening words in the classroom, and then head outdoors to work together to plant one of ASI’s raised beds. Some past experience learning and speaking Swedish is required for this class.

$18 ($15 ASI member)

ASI Language Student Potluck

Save the date for a language student spring potluck! Bring a dish and join ASI language teachers and fellow students for an end of the year celebration on the lawn. Current and former students welcome. More details and registration information to follow in late April. Free
