Sommarhistorietter: Read Classic Swedish Stories

This class is intended for students who already have a good grasp of Swedish and who wish to apply their knowledge to two classic Swedish stories by Selma Lagerlöf and Hjalmar Söderberg. Both Swedish and English will be spoken in class discussions. Course materials will be provided by instructor Gregg White. $60 ($50 ASI member)
Swedish Pronunciation
Virtual | Wednesdays, June 7 & 14, 6:30–8 pm
Å, Ä, Ö...dig into Swedish pronounciation with instructor Ingela Haaland! This class is appropriate for students of any level who are looking for tips on how to improve their pronunciation when speaking Swedish. Students should have studied at least one 9-week term of Swedish before enrolling in this class. This class is held in English. $30 ($25 ASI member)
Kort Kurs 1 Review
Virtual | Wednesdays, June 7–July 12, 10 am–11:30 am
In this class taught by Jean Hanslin, students will secure basic vocabulary and grammar foundation with a speedy read-through of introductory material from Kort Kurs 1 including English explanations. This class is intended as a review and is geared to students who have studied Swedish for at least two language terms. The Kort Kurs 1 course packet can be purchased exclusively in the ASI Museum Store. $90 ($80 ASI member)
Kort Kurs 2 Review
Virtual | Wednesdays, June 7–July 12, 12–1:30 pm
In this class taught by Jean Hanslin, students will improve their ability to recognize and conjugate Swedish verbs which clarifies and expands functional language and culture skills. This class is intended as a review and is geared to students who have studied Swedish for at least three language terms. The Kort Kurs 2 course packet can be purchased in the ASI Museum Store. $90 ($80 ASI member)
Bara svenska från fika till fika 2: Swedish Immersion Experience
In-Person | Thu, June 8, 10 am–3 pm
Interact entirely in Swedish revolving around activities and games for a day with instructor, Jean Hanslin. Expand vocabulary, improve pronunciation, and speed up comprehension and response time. Pack and bring a lunch, fika provided. Students should have at least two years of Swedish study before joining this class. Immersing yourself in Swedish at ASI is the next best thing to traveling to Sweden! $50 ($40 ASI member)
Åh snaps! Swedish Drinking Songs
In-Person | Thu, June 8, 6:30–8 pm
In this popular workshop taught by Liz Stopka, participants learn how to sing several snapsvisor (drinking songs) and how to skål properly to celebrate like a Swede — just in time for midsommar! Come ready to sing, laugh, and learn a little Swedish language and culture. Purchase a drink from FIKA to skål with and join us outside in the ASI courtyard for a fun summer evening. $18 ($15 ASI member)
Read a Short Story in Swedish: Barnens dag i Bullerbyn

Reading is a great way to improve your vocabulary!
Over two weeks, students will read and discuss the short story Barnens dag i Bullerbyn (Astrid Lindgren) with Jean Hanslin. This class is suitable for students who have been studying Swedish for at least two terms. Materials will be provided by the instructor. $30 ($25 ASI member)
Sweden and Swedish for Travelers

Not ready to commit to a full language course but want a brief introduction to Swedish and the lovely country where it is spoken? This language and travel course taught by Gregg White will get the traveler to Sweden off on the right foot! Required text: Swedish Dictionary & Phrasebook by Julie Hansen & Dick Nilsson (available in the ASI shop). This class meets twice a week for two weeks. $60 ($50 ASI member)
History of the Swedish Language

This two-part lecture, held in English, invites students to discover how the Swedish language developed from the first century through today. Where can there still be remnants of older Swedish in today’s language, and where is the language headed today in a globalized world? Materials provided by instructor Ingela Haaland. Midsommar Sing-along
In-Person | Thu, June 22, 6:30–8 pm
In this fun sing-along for adults, participants will revisit some of the most cherished and classic Swedish summer songs. From traditional songs like Små grodorna to classic pop hits like Sommartider, instructor Liz Stopka will go over song lyrics and melodies with the group before singing outside in the ASI courtyard. Celebrate the summer in song!

Writing as a Vehicle for Change: Swedish Literature
Virtual | Mondays, July 10–31, 5:30–7 pm
Explore Swedish literature this summer! This class taught by Gunn Edberg-Caldwell will discuss two texts written 100 years apart, Pengar (Money) by Victoria Benedictsson and Århundradets kärlekssaga (The Love Story of the Century) by Märta Tikkanen. Books can be read in either Swedish or English and class discussions will be in English. The books are not available in the ASI Museum Store but can be found at the library or online. $60 ($50 ASI member)
Beyond ABBA: Swedish Music Appreciation

In this class taught by Liz Stopka, students will go beyond ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” and explore a different popular Swedish musical artist each week. This class is open to anyone with an interest in Swedish music. Some knowledge of Swedish is helpful but not required. Content will be in Swedish, but discussions will take place in English. $60 ($50 ASI member)
