Language Classes

ASI’s language program is one of the best resources for Swedish and Finnish language learning outside of the Nordic region. Both online and in-person classes offer students at all skill levels an opportunity to learn and practice their language skills from anywhere in the world.

Intro to Swedish

Curious about the Swedish language, but not yet ready to commit to a multi-date class? This two-hour introductory workshop taught by Jean Hanslin is the perfect way to get a feel for Swedish, pick up a bit of grammar, and learn how to pronounce some words as part of basic conversation. $18 ($15 ASI member)

Language Expansion Classes

Bara svenska från fika till fika 1: Swedish Immersion

Experience

In-Person | Thu, June 1, 10 am–3 pm

Actively immerse yourself in spoken Swedish language for a day at ASI. Students will practice simple phrases and vocabulary with realia and movement in guided, functional settings with instructor Jean Hanslin. Pack and bring a lunch, fika will be provided. Students should have at least one year of Swedish study before joining this class. $50 ($40 ASI member)

Read a Short Story in Swedish: Goldlock

Virtual | Mondays, June 5 & 12, 4:30–6 pm

Reading is a great way to improve your vocabulary! Over two weeks, students will read and discuss the Swedish version of Goldlock (Goldilocks) with instructor Jean Hanslin and compare it to the English version. This class is suitable for students who have been studying Swedish for at least one term. Materials will be provided by the instructor. $30 ($25 ASI member)

Beginning Swedish / Rivstart Review 1

Virtual | Mon, June 5–Wed, June 21, 4:30–6 pm

This Beginning Swedish class is perfect for those students who want to jumpstart their Swedish studies this summer, or learners who feel like they need a review of the first few chapters of the book. Taught by Ingela Haaland, the class uses the textbook and övningsbok (workbook) Rivstart A1/A2 and will meet twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays for three weeks. $90 ($80 ASI member)

Sommarpratare: Intermediate Swedish Conversation

Virtual | Mondays, June 5–26, 6:30–8 pm

Keep up with your svenska this summer! This class taught by Jean Hanslin is suitable for students at a high intermediate or above level of Swedish (i.e. you must be able to hold a conversation in Swedish). In this class, students will hone their speaking skills through conversations about current events, news items, and everyday topics. Häng med! $60 ($50 ASI member)

Sweden and Swedish for Travelers

Virtual | Tue, June 6–Thu, June 15, 4:30–6 pm

This language and travel course taught by Gregg White is great for anyone seeking a brief introduction to Swedish and the lovely country where it is spoken. Required text: Swedish Dictionary & Phrasebook by Julie Hansen & Dick Nilsson (available in the ASI Museum Store). $60 ($50 ASI member)
