This year marks the 100th anniversary of Sätergläntan, one of Sweden’s oldest and most cherished handcraft institutions. Located in Dalarna, Sätergläntan is a meeting place where artists travel to share ideas learn from some of the world’s best artisans. Thanks to support from the American Scandinavian Foundation, ASI will welcome a number of Sätergläntan’s teaching artists to share their knowledge and teach classes.

Carve a Swedish-Style Dough Bowl with Beth Moen
In-Person at Fireweed Community Woodshop
Workshop | Fri, June 23–Sun, June 25, 9 am–5 pm
Join Beth Moen, a lead instructor from Sätergläntan’s woodworking program, for a weekend of carving a Swedish-style dough bowl. Students will start with a log and work with green wood and hand tools to create a small, shallow bowl traditionally used for bread making. Suitable for ages 18+; previous green woodworking experience is recommended and good hand and arm strength are required. $400 ($350 ASI or Fireweed Member), includes $50 materials fee

and Sew a Kjolsäck with Johanna Runbäck

Join Johanna Runbäck, a lead instructor from Sätergläntan’s hand sewing program, for a weekend of sewing a Swedish kjolsäck, or decorative skirt bag. Using inspiration from ASI’s material collections as well as Johanna’s personal collection, students will use embroidery and applique to the pocket’s front before hand sewing the pocket to assemble. Suitable for ages 18+. $400 ($350 ASI Member), includes $50 materials fee
Weaving with History: Using Historical Textiles for
Weaving Today with Susanna Ayton

Join Susanna Ayton, a lead instructor from Sätergläntan’s weaving program, for a weekend of working with and finding inspiration in historical textiles. After examining and taking drafts of archival textiles at ASI on Friday, students will work on samples to reconstruct and riff on the historic weavings at the Weavers Guild of Minnesota on Saturday and Sunday. Suitable for ages 18+. $450 ($400 ASI or WGM Member), includes $100 materials fee
Forging and Using Viking Fire Steels with
Johan Säfström
In-Person at Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center and ASI Workshop | Fri, June 23 & Sun, June 25 OR Sat, June 24 & Sun, June 25, 9 am-5 pm both days
Join Johan Säfström, a lead instructor from Sätergläntan’s blacksmithing program, to use and make a fire in one class. On the first day, students will work at the Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center to make Viking-era-style fire steel while using basic forging processes. On the second day, students will gather at ASI to practice using their fire steels to start fires. Suitable for ages 18+; appropriate for novice blacksmithing students. $250 ($225 ASI or CAFAC Member), includes $25 materials fee

Nordic Table
Celebrate and explore northern foodways through events that connect participants to food experts, guest chefs, and seasoned educators. Demos allow students to watch instructors prepare featured recipes while workshops are participatory experiences in which registrants cook alongside the instructor. Tickets to virtual Nordic Table classes include access to a recording of the class for one month.
