Go beyond the borders of Scandinavia in this beginnerfriendly handcraft workshop that explores Japanese weaving traditions. Try your hand at SAORI weaving, an expressive, “freestyle” weaving process that blends color into a beautiful piece of fabric you will take home. Prepared looms will allow students to jump right in, regardless of previous weaving experience. Suitable for ages 12+. $70 ($60 ASI member) + $20 materials fee payable to instructor

Dye Like A Viking with Theresa Hornstein

Learn how the Vikings added color to their life through vibrant textiles in this historically grounded natural dye class. By practicing dyeing small wool skeins, students in this intro-level class will explore the flowers, leaves, roots, and lichen used in Nordic countries for dyeing since at least Viking times. Needle Felted Pocket Tomte and Friend with Jen Newburg

Make the sweetest little wooly tomte and critter friend ready for imaginative play in this intergenerational needle felting class. Kids and their special adults will shape and decorate a pocket sized tomte and an accompanying woodland creature using the magical technique of needle felting. The Hand Embroidered Needle Case with Theresa Hornstein

Create a needle case while learning basic embroidery stitches, and leave with the tools, knowledge, and inspiration to continue an embroidery journey! Working with hand dyed embroidery floss and felt, students will learn about where colors historically came from while gathering inspiration for future projects of all shapes and sizes. Suitable for ages 13+. $70 ($60 ASI member) + $15 materials fee payable to instructor

Botanical Printed Nuno Felt Scarf with Becky Utecht

In-Person | Workshop | Sun, August 6, 10 am–4 pm

Combine new and old techniques to make a unique and meaningful felted scarf! Students will begin in the morning by Nuno felting a scarf, a beginner friendlytechnique of layering wool on fabric. In the afternoon, students will practice laying out botanical materials on to their scarf for steam printing and continue felting a new project. Suitable for ages 18+ or ages 15–17 alongside accompanying adult. $100 ($90 ASI member) + $40 materials fee payable to instructor

Green Woodcarving 102 with Sam Gathje

Ready to dive into Scandinavian-style green wood carving? Join Sam Gathje for this weekend-long course designed to introduce students to the foundation tools and techniques to begin a carving practice. Over two days, students will complete several small projects and find inspiration for many more. Ages 16+ welcome, or ages 14+ if registered alongside an accompanying adult. $130 ($115 ASI member) + $25 Materials fee payable to instructor

Intro to Kolrosing with Liesl Chatman

In-Person | Workshop | Thu, July 13, 6:30-9 pm or Thu, August 10, 6:30–9 pm

Join Liesl Chatman, featured exhibition artist from ASI’s Stories in Wood exhibition, to learn more about the very old but accessible craft of kolrosing. Students will have a chance to practice making their own marks with a kolrosing knife and get a feel for the many possibilities that kolrosing offers anyone interested in woodworking, drawing, and traditional Scandinavian crafts. Suitable for ages 16+. $50 ($45 ASI member) + $15 materials fee payable to instructor

Chip Carving Basics with Paul Anderson and Mike Hughes

In-Person | Workshop | Sat, July 15, 9 am-5 pm and Sun, July 16, 9 am–1 pm

Explore the technique of chip carving in the Scandinavian style. Chip carving is an old and useful form of decoration for woodenware of all kinds. With demonstration and plenty of instructor attention, students will practice a set of basic chip carving cuts on a practice board before working on a coaster. Green Woodcarving 101 with Sam Gathje

Get a taste of woodcarving in this half day, in-person class. This quick overview to the fundamentals of woodcarving will introduce the tools, terminology, and concepts of working with green wood. With a carving knife in hand, participants will practice simple knife grips and maybe even finish a small butter spreader. Suitable for ages 16+, or ages 12–15 registered alongside an adult. $50 ($45 ASI member) + $15 materials fee payable to instructor

Scandinavian Figure Carving with Charles Banks

In-Person | Workshop | Fri, August 11–Sun, August 13, 10 am–5 pm each day

Carvers of all experience levels are invited to join this three-day flat plane figure carving class. Using just a knife, students will carve a Nordic-inspired character in a simplified, traditional style. Students can expect plenty of discussion about the history of figure carving and notable carvers while finishing one or two carvings. Moderate hand strength and dexterity required. Suitable for ages 16+. $250 ($225 ASI member) + $10 materials fee per blank payable to instructor

Hooks and Hangers with Sam Gathje

In-Person | Workshop | Sat, August 19, 10 am–4 pm

Put your carving knife to work carving hooks and hangers in this one-day class! Students will practice carving in the traditional green wood style to create a hook out of a branched piece of wood, then tackle simple pegs which can be attached to a wall or board for any hanging storage needs. Suitable for students ages 16+ with good hand strength and dexterity. $100 ($90 ASI member) + $30 materials fee payable to instructor
