Create a piece of pottery to use in your home every day! Students will first form small trays from clay slabs and then paint them with colorful underglazes. Choose a pattern provided by the instructor or bring your own inspiration! The instructors will fire the trays and return them to ASI for pick up a few weeks later. Craft and Cocktails: Ceramic Luminaries with Sue Flanders

Get ready for nights on the patio with your own handmade ceramic luminaries! Students will create a couple styles of luminaries by cutting and shaping slabs of clay, while enjoying a signature cocktail from FIKA Café. Projects are glazed and fired by the instructor and available for pick up 1–2 weeks after class. Open to ages 21+. $65 ($55 ASI member) + $10 materials fee payable to the instructor

Carve and Paint a Ceramic Vessel with Kim Burnham

In-Person | Workshop | Thu, July 27, 6–9 pm

Join potter Kim Burnham of Imokim Pottery to decorate a ceramic vessel by both carving and painting. Kim will throw a selection of mugs and bud vases before class and then share tips and tricks for adding simple decoration to greenware. The pieces will be glazed with a top clear coat and then fired before returning to ASI for pick up a few weeks after class. Suitable for ages 16+. $70 ($60 ASI member) + $30 materials fee payable to instructor

Wire Hooks with Faith Clover

In-Person | Workshop | Thu, May 11, 6–8 pm

Create a traditional-style Swedish wire hook to lend a hint of folk art to your home! Using just wire and pliers, students will try their hand at luffarslöjd—or Swedish wire art—in this evening long class. Head home with a wire hook and maybe a new hobby! Moderate hand strength and dexterity is required to complete the project. Suitable for students ages 16+. $50 ($45 ASI member) + $10 materials fee payable to instructor

Wire Candleholders with Faith Clover

In-Person | Workshop | Sat, August 5, 10 am–3 pm

Using simple hand tools, wire, and perhaps a few beads for color and shine, students will practice the Swedish folk art of wire work while making a votive or taper style candle holder. Students need moderate hand strength and dexterity. Suitable for ages 16+. $75 ($65 ASI member) + $10 materials fee payable to instructor

June Floral Centerpiece with Northerly Flora

Join local flower farm Northerly Flora for an evening of flora arranging with local, fresh picked blooms! Registrants will work with fresh flowers grown just across town and a provided vase to create a gorgeous floral centerpiece that sings early summer. Nordic Herbals for Summer with Gigi Stafne

In-Person | Workshop | Sat, June 10, 10 am–3 pm

Taking inspiration from Nordic herbal traditions, spend a day exploring generational wisdom and knowledge of summer herbs and wild foods. Students will make several herbal preparations while grounding their learning in modern understandings of herbal medicine and the Norse mythology and oral traditions of Sunna, the Norse Sun goddess and healer. Suitable for ages 13+. $75 ($65 ASI member) + $30 materials fee payable to instructor

Intergenerational Himmeli with Alison Aune

Come create a himmeli, or fanciful mobile, inspired by folk art and updated with modern materials! In the past, many families created amazing geometric mobiles out of straw to hang in their homes and bring good luck. In this class, kids, teens, and their special adults will make their own himmeli using colorful craft materials. Suitable for ages 6–17 registered alongside an adult. $50 adult/child pair ($45 ASI member adult/ child pair) + $10 materials fee per project payable to instructor

Watercolor Buds and Blooms with Tara Sweeney

Preserve the bounty of seasonal flora in vibrant watercolor! From direct observation to expressive exercises, students will work with capturing and combining the architecture and patterns of early spring flowers while exploring new watercolor techniques. Fanciful Paper Cutting with Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen

Explore the universe of fanciful paper-cut beings with paper-cutting artist Torben from his home in Odense, Denmark. Students will work alongside Torben to release their own fantastic people from a piece of paper using only a pair of scissors. Students provide their own materials; see asimn.org for more details. Watercolor Batik Egret with Kim Gordon

In-Person | Workshop | Fri, July 21, 1–4 pm

Try your hand at watercolor batik, a fun and modern twist on the ancient batik technique. Students will use layers of melted wax and watercolor on rice paper to create an image of an egret along a shoreline. This unusual art form is fun and approachable and results in a beautiful piece of art that reflects Minnesota’s northern landscape. $70 ($60 ASI member) + $10 materials fee payable to the instructor

Summer Inspired Gelatin Printing with Kim Gordon

Learn about a simple printing technique that will get your creative juices flowing! Gelatin printing uses food grade gelatin to create a printing plate that will produce a one of a kind print, also called a monotype. In this evening class, students will experiment with multiple techniques for working with this material to create a complete unique summer-inspired work of art. Wet Felted Shoulder Bag with Elise Kyllo

In-Person | Workshop | Sat, May 20–Sun, May 21, 10 am–5 pm both days

Felt a durable and beautiful wool shoulder bag that can take anything you throw in it! Using a seamless resist method, students will felt a medium-sized shoulder bag complete with a pocket and coiled strap. Some wet felting experience is helpful and students should be prepared to be on their feet and physically active for the whole weekend. Suitable for ages 15+. $200 ($180 ASI member) + $45 materials fee payable to instructor

Needle Felted Mushroom House with Jen Newburg

In-Person | Intergenerational Workshop | Sun, May 28, 1–3 pm

Make a cute and fluffy mushroom house ready for imaginative play in this intergenerational class. Felter Jen Newburg will lead kids and their special adults through the process of shaping and decorating two mushroom-shaped houses using the magical technique of needle felting. Using a needle to poke colorful wool into place is a fun and easy craft for all ages. Painting with Wool: Dala Pig with Laura Berlage

Create a unique wool “painting” in the style of Scandinavian folk art just in time for Midsommar! Students will explore the magic of needle felting to recreate a traditional Dala Pig design using beautiful hand-dyed roving from the instructor’s own sheep. Focus will be given to shape creation, colorwork to mimic folk painting techniques, and threedimensionality. This class includes a kit ($33 value). Make a sweet garland of colorful wooly flowers just in time for Midsommar! Felter Jen will lead kids and their special adults through the process of shaping and decorating wool flowers using the magical technique of needle felting, before stringing them onto a garland. Going Blue: Indigo for Everyone with Lesley Darling

Join this all-experience levels class to play with and learn about indigo, one of humanity’s favorite natural dyes! Participants will make an indigo vat, talk space and equipment needs for home-dyers, and play with resist techniques. This experience is perfect for trying out indigo dyeing once, or for anyone getting ready to tackle more dyeing at home. Suitable for ages 18+.

Intro to Embroidered Embellishments with Laura Ricketts
