ASIFA HELLAS, the Greek National Animation Association, is proud to present its updated Hellenic Animation Guide 2023, featuring extensive information about the animation market in Greece, including details for enterprises and institutions throughout Greece. All the entries are active in the field of animation production, distribution, promotion, and education. The creative ecosystem presented in the Guide aims to increase extroversion and leverage project investment in Greek animation through national and international institutions and investment schemes. Furthermore, we aim to introduce the opportunities for new directors and creators from all over the world to produce their work in Greece and distribute it globally.

The National Centre of Audiovisual Media and Communication (EKOME) unceasingly supports the Greek creative community of animation, recognizing that the sector can immerge as an important pillar of domestic audiovisual production. ASIFA HELLAS GREEK ANIMATION ASSOCIATION

ASIFA HELLAS, the Hellenic Animation Association, was created in 2008, aiming at promoting the art of animation in Greece and beyond. In 2015, it acquired its current legal form as a non-profit civil company with a 5-member Board, 16 General Assembly members and a total of around 100 members of the Association. Being present for a 7th consecutive year at Annecy, ASIFA HELLAS provides data on the new ecosystem for animation in Greece and implements the Greece animated action, designed to connect Greek animators with the International animation industry. Industry networks built in the past seven years, with the contribution of both the private and public sectors are the leading point for a brighter future of Greek animation.

The National Centre of Audiovisual Media and Communication - EKOME supports the audiovisual production in Greece by implementing the Greek investment incentives for audiovisual production.

· Following a successful first implementation, the Cash Rebate program amounts today to 40% and has already been granted to more than a hundred of Greek and international projects.

· The Tax Relief program offers a tax deduction of 30% for investment in audiovisual productions in Greece.

· The National Film Offices Network operates in 13 Regions and two major Municipalities in Greece and offers a new approach to services provided swiftly and efficiently.

GREEK FILM CENTRE

The Greek Film Centre (GFC) is the main institution that exercises cinema policy in Greece. Its main goals are:

a. The protection, support and development of film production in Greece

b. The promotion and diffusion of Greek film productions, both domestically and internationally

c. The promotion of Greece abroad as an appropriate location for filming cinematic and audiovisual productions, as well as the attraction of foreign cinematic and audiovisual productions in Greece, in general. Hellas Film and the Hellenic Film Commission are in charge of the actions related to the objectives

The Greek Film Centre (GFC) has signed several bilateral co-production agreements with other countries, such as France (via CNC, the Centre National de Cinema et del’ Image Animee) and Canada, giving the possibility for Greek Producers to apply for additional funding to Eurimages and the network of French Speaking Countries. The Greek Film Centre granted also the Prize for the Best Greek Animation Film, which was awarded for the first time on January 31st 2016.

CREATIVE EUROPE - MEDIA

The EU Programme Creative Europe MEDIA supports the European audiovisual industry and seeks to promote the development, distribution and promotion of European films. Creative Europe 2021-2027, with a 50% budget increase, will invest in actions that reinforce cultural diversity and respond to the needs and challenges of the cultural and creative sectors. Its novelties will contribute to the recovery of these sectors, reinforcing their efforts to become more digital, green, resilient and inclusive. Animation professionals can benefit from the following opportunities:

- Development funding for projects intended for cinema, TV or digital platforms, including non-linear projects

- Production funding for animation content intended for TV

- Training courses and industry events aimed at professionals in the animation sector

For Greece the budget invested by MEDIA the previous period in the national AV sector was 11,2 million, with 110 national projects funded and more than 55 associations and companies supported. Greek Film Centre has the administrative responsibility to operate the Creative Europe MEDIA Desk in Greece.

FRENCH INSTITUTE OF GREECE

The French Institute of Greece co-organised for several consecutive years the International Animation Day with ASIFA HELLAS. Because the 28th of October is a National Holiday in Greece, the first public screening of animation by Emile Raynaud (28th of October 1892 at the Musee Grevin) is celebrated a few days in advance of the actual anniversary date. In 2019, the screenings took place silmutaneously in Athens and Thessaloniki.

International Animation Festival + Agora

The main focus of this year’s festival is dedicated to Animation and Ancient Greece, while at the same time, ANIMASYROS 2023 presents a tribute to the animation industry in the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America, entitled La Animaciόn Iberoamericana.

ANIMASYROS was launched, as an initiative of the nonprofit company Platforma-Urban Culture Co, in order to promote to the audience the art of animated film, while the initiative aimed at building and maintaining a creative meeting and networking hub of animation professionals at a pan-European and international level.

ANIMASYROS International Animation Festival, the largest festival of its kind in Greece and one of the largest in Europe, launched its journey into the world of animation on 19 September 2008 in the island of Syros, Greece. Since then, ANIMASYROS takes place annually in the capital of the Cyclades complex, having hosted more than 104,000 unique visitors. The festival’s program includes projections, special tributes, new local and international collaborations, educational activities for children, youngsters, adults, persons with disabilities, and senior citizens, as well as parties and tons of parallel events. ATHENS ANIMFEST

The Athens Animfest, the International Animation Festival of Athens is taking place every Spring in various venues in Athens. The festival includes short animated movies in competition, workshops, lectures, and exhibition are included during the four days of activities.

The festival is organised by the Center of Animation, Audiovisual and Performing Arts (Ars Anima), a non-profit organization, that aims to bring the younger generation closer to the secrets and fascination of the art of animation and its diverse applications in the small and big screen, the multimedia, the Internet and education in general. The festival gives special emphasis to European animation films, regardless of techniques, themes, language, nationality, and artists’ age, style, and aesthetic trends thus demonstrating the common cultural heritage of the peoples of Europe.

CHANIARTOON International Comic & Animation Festival

Chaniartoon - International Comic & Animation Festival was founded in 2017 and is taking place every September in the city of Chania in Crete. The main categories of the festival are the art of animation and comics. In the animation field, there are several projections of short and feature animation films from all over the world, competition sections and several special tributes. In the comic section, there is every year a big exhibition with many interactive elements, from more than 50 artists. Also, there is a 3-day artist alley, with more than 50 guest artists visiting Chania and exhibiting their art. In 2020 game design become a new field of the festival, as it is an art that combines illustration and animation, with the interactivity aspect. During the festival, there are many parallel activities, like workshops, a small conference, technology areas, projection mappings, music concerts and others.

Chaniartoon is close to technology, as it was the first festival in 2019, producing and presenting an interactive Augmented Reality Application, and in 2020 the first Greek music Virtual Reality Animation. From 2020, it has a VR-animation section, where the audience can experience the films with Head Mount Displays. Until 2021, it has produced many applications, such as AR/VR interactive applications, interactive projection mappings, 3d Desktop applications, and even experimental ones like VR with haptics and scent devices. In 2020 Chaniartoon founded the Chaniartoon Comic Library.

Depart from the workshops during the festival, in 2021 Chaniartoon started a large educational program, called “Creative Hub”, which is taking place all over the year and educate students and adults in art&technology projects (Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Projection Mapping, 3D printing, Laser cutting etc.).

STRATOS STASSINOS GREEK ANIMATION ANNUAL AWARDS

The ASIFA HELLAS Award for Best Greek Animated Film was introduced in 2015 by the ASIFA HELLAS Board (sponsored by the Greek Film Centre and co-organized by Greekanimation.com) to celebrate the 70 years of Greek animation (1945-2015) and focus on the present and future of Greek animation artists working both in Greece and abroad. The award was renamed in 2016 as Stratos Stassinos Award to honour the eponymous Greek pioneer (1945-2009) of hand-drawn and stop-motion animation. The establishment of the Stratos Stassinos Award by ASIFA HELLAS serves to acknowledge the artistic excellence and the growing international visibility of Greek animation films in recent years (2010-present), both in student and professional films; to create a strong sense of community and collaboration between Greek animators working in a field itself characterized by communal effort; and, finally, to enable and empower Greek practitioners to continue their artistic efforts in the international animation scene.

Films who have already competed at Greek animation festivals serve as the pool for preliminary award selection, while the final decision is the result of voting among ASIFA HELLAS members.

In 2020, ASIFA HELLAS celebrated 75 years of Greek Animation and decided together with the Greek Film Centre to explicitly recognize student achievements by offering a Student Award in parallel with the Professional Award. This year’s ceremony, held in January 2023, among the guests invited were Mickaël Marin, CEO of Annecy International Animation Film Festival & Market and Veronique Encrenaz, Head of MIFA. Sergio Kotsovoulos was awarded for the 2D Animation short film “Echo” (2022) in the professional category and Anna Oikonomou for her film “Searching for Joy” (2021) in the Student category.

The web portal Greekanimation.com was created on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the screening of the first Greek animated movie (1945). It is an attempt to register all Greek animation works as well as those who contributed to their creation, the production companies, the festivals, the awards and in general all the information related to the history of the 8th art in Greece. The aim of the portal is to present the Greek animation worldwide and to highlight its contribution to education and organized production.
