JANUARY, 2021 To the Membership of ASID Georgia: I wish you all the best on the road ahead! This past year was an incredibly challenging year in all aspects of our lives. I hope all of you can take my father’s words to heart: “this too shall pass,” and know that we are stronger united than divided. I will miss the connection that I felt to you all and my board and look forward to other ways I may now serve to support our community through ASID and other community outreach. My goal for us in 2019-2020 was to further expand our community outreach. We had three in-person events that met that goal: our annual meeting at Generator, our Art Auction with multiple non-profit/underserved communities engaged, and our fascinating Story Tellers with non-traditional designers. While this only was the tip of the iceberg, I know that this will carry, on as nothing is more important now than how we can unite to help support one another. JANUARY, 2021 Hello, and Happy New Year to you, our ASID Georgia community! I’m Tony Purvis, your 2020-2021 Chapter President. This past year has been unprecedented in so many ways, it’s fair to say, with both challenges and silver linings for each of us, so I am hopeful that the recent holiday season provided an opportunity for you to focus on the most important parts of our lives – the people and relationships we hold close, be it family, friend, or community. Throughout 2020, our ASID community has demonstrated a remarkable ability to fellowship together in new and unique ways, and we’ll continue to do so safely and thoughtfully as the new year develops. We began this new board term in fall with a concentrated focus on providing support for those members who are experiencing job instability, with webinars, panels and computer skills classes; and we have found new, creative approaches to foster professional community and development for our Emerging Professionals, students, and more seasoned members alike. I look forward to sharing those with you as each event or opportunity arises over the course of the year. Keep an eye out for my monthly President’s Happy Hours or Lunches (virtually for now) so we can say hello in person, and be sure to take care of yourself especially well the rest of this winter. You are one of our professional family! In closing, let me offer a well-deserved Congratulations! to the outstanding members whose work from the 2020 Design Excellence Awards is featured in this issue. S A N DR A M c GOWA N , FA S ID It is with a solemn heart that I announce the passing of Sandra McGowen, FASID, LEED AP, RID on Wednesday the 27th of January, 2021. The American Society of Interior Designers Georgia Chapter extends its deepest sympathy to family, friends and colleagues. Sandra has been a part of the ASID family since 1978 and is honored as a Fellow of the Society, the highest achievement by ASID awarded to those in the design community who’ve shown consistent and selfless contributions to the profession and awarded to fewer than 1% of all ASID members. She served in numerous ASID roles over the years, including Georgia Chapter President in 1990, Regional Director, and National Director, as well as on the boards of NCIDQ and GAIDP (Georgia Alliance of Interior Design Professionals), she was also a site visitor for CIDA, formerly known as FIDER. She was one of the first Registered Interior Designer in the State of Georgia, underscoring that she was an early and strong advocate for the professional legal rights of Interior Designers, and was well known in the industry for her work in reviewing building accessibility throughout the state of Georgia as the Americans with Disabilities Act took effect nationally.

At the time of her passing, Sandra was the owner of McGowan Interiors, and was previously the Interior Design Coordinator at Brenau University. She herself attended both Louisiana Tech University (BFA 1964) and Georgia State University, receiving her Bachelor of Visual Arts in Interior Design in 1978. Her friends and colleagues remember her with great fondness and deep respect. She will be missed. Godspeed, Sandra.
ANNE SHIELDS BROWN, ASID Anne Shields Brown, ASID, NCIDQ , former President of the Georgia Chapter in 1989-1990, died peacefully on November 22, 2020. Anne graduated from UNCG and had a distinguished career as an NCIDQ certified registered interior designer. Anne was recognized for her achievements in both commercial and residential design, winning local and national awards for her remarkable projects. Anne completed many design projects throughout Augusta, the Southeast and several abroad. In 1989, Anne was elected president of the Georgia Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers, ASID. As a true Southern lady, Anne was the epitome of elegance and grace, always impeccably attired and known for her attention to every detail. She loved music, painting, dancing and travel. She was always delighted to find fine furniture and accessories in her shopping trips around Europe.
J OY CE B A S S E TT W E S T , A S ID Joyce Bassett West, ASID, NCIDQ , former President of the Georgia Chapter in 1993-1994, lost her battle with cancer Saturday, January 11, 2020. Joyce began her interior design career in the early eighties at Rich's in the Commercial Design Division. She later became a manufacture's representative in Atlanta and then Jacksonville, FL. After retiring a few years ago, Joyce and her daughter, LeeAngela Garate (Roger) and granddaughter, moved back to her home place in Alabama.
