Filling in the Blanks: The Story of a U.S. Soldier Searching for His Birth Parents  By Jodi Katherine Kiely

Major Tim Walker won’t forget the day he made a 1-star South Korean Navy Admiral and an Army Special Forces Colonel dissolve into tears. It was 2004 and Walker, then a U.S. Navy Lieutenant officer, was stationed in Seoul. As a Korean-American wearing a U.S. military uniform, he was a curiosity among the Korean officers he worked with. After he became friends with a Navy Admiral and an Army Colonel, Walker’s Korean counterparts grew curious about his American last name. “Many of the Koreans I worked with knew adoptees existed but probably had never met one before me,” Walker said. “When I told these guys how I was born in Korea, abandoned shortly after birth and adopted by an American family, these full-grown men were in tears by the end of my story because they felt so bad about what had happened.” Moved by Walker’s desire to search for his birth parents, the Korean Navy Admiral called a friend at one of Korea’s national TV networks, KBS. The network offered to help Walker search for his birth parents by nationally airing his story on the nightly news. During its research, KBS was able to find the orphanage Walker stayed at as a newborn. As part of the news segment, Walker visited the orphanage and met with a case worker who had his original paperwork. What he read in those papers both surprised and angered him. “For 32 years I had been told that I was abandoned on a bench at a children’s hospital in Seoul,” he said. “But I read in my records that I was really found under a bridge on the banks of the Han River and taken to the police station across the street before going to the orphanage.” It is not uncommon for Korean adoptees to be told a sanitized story about their origins only to discover during a search for birth parents that everything they had been told about their beginnings was a fabricated lie. There are speculated reasons for falsified histories, one being that orphanages feared no foreign family would adopt a baby with an “ugly” story.

information on me,” Walker said. “But the only new piece of information I got was a description of the person who brought me into the police station.” Walker’s story is a frustrating tale of how one can have all the best resources at hand and still not find what he is looking for. Still, he has not given up his search.

“Why do I continue searching? I’ve been thinking about this for 41 years,” he told me during our interview. “We [adoptees] all have to ask the question ‘why?’ Why was I abandoned? What was wrong with me?” Walker’s latest hope lies in a global DNA matching service called 23andMe. At the time of our interview he had not yet submitted his DNA sample, but intended to do so.

Walker’s search then took him to the bridge he had been left under and to the police station the person who found him had taken him to. It was there that he saw the original police log recording his abandonment. When his story aired on national TV, several people came forth claiming to be Walker’s birth parents. Not one single caller, however, was willing to take a DNA test, and every single one asked if money was involved for claiming him as their son. With the TV segment bringing up no leads, Walker next turned to a DNA matching service offered by the Korean adoptee NGO, Global Overseas Adoption Link (G.O.A.L.). But no matches registered. He then left Korea, transitioned from the Navy to the Army and was deployed to Iraq as part of the war’s military surge. Following a lengthy tour there, Walker returned to Korea in 2010, this time wearing a U.S. Army uniform. While back in Seoul, he became friends with an officer working at Korea’s National Intelligence Service and gave him copies of his papers and information which he had gleaned from his search with KBS. “I had him do a search on any new

“What happens,” I asked him, “if you never find your birth parents? Can you be at peace?” Walker believes he can. He is now married (his wife is also Korean) and has a child of his own. “Until my son was born, I had never known what it’s like to be a blood relative and to have someone in my life who looked like me,” he said. “I can now be at peace because even if I never find my birth parents, I can start a new branch on the family tree. How cool is it have a 100% Korean family with the last name Walker? It will be talked about for generations.” Photo #1: Walker at 6 months of age. Photo #2: Walker with his adoptive family. Orlando Taiko Dojo recital It all started two years ago, when someone said, “Let’s have Orlando Taiko Dojo recital.” Orlando Taiko Dojo is a nonprofit organization and has been performing traditional Japanese Taiko drumming at various local events but never really held a recital before. Our first recital was small scale, more like a “picnic party.” We used the parking space behind our dojo as the stage and the audiences were other students and families. We even had dojo members brought treats while teachers cooked hotdogs. This year, on April 26th, we had our second recital at a much bigger and better venue- Freedom High School’s Performing Arts Center. With the help of one of our dojo student, we had an opportunity to borrow the school’s auditorium. Apart from the first recital, we had stage, air conditioning, lights, microphones, and no hotdogs.

 By Mayuko Ishikura

And this time, it was a serious and actual recital, with film and photography crews recording everyone’s performances. All of these factors fired most of the students, and made other students nervous. The program included total of four pieces. The opening piece was played by the entire dojo members. For the following three pieces, each class was assigned a song. At our dojo, we teach multiple classes: Children, Teen, and the S- Team (advanced/adults). What was different from usual stage shows was that most students have never performed just with their classmates. Younger students, especially, are always placed near the advanced students so they have someone to follow. Another challenge was the procedure of setting up and striking for every song. Playing four pieces in a roll was a first experience, making it the longest performance time for

the dojo students. It’s been 4 years since the dojo was opened. The events and venues Orlando Taiko Dojo participated in are growing yearly. The dojo has been performing at Dragon Boat Festivals, Music Festivals, Asian Cultural Festivals, and even marathons. And the most recent stage was the Asian Cultural Festival at Fashion Square on May 30th. Now, the dojo is practicing for our next huge event in November, the Orlando Japan Festival. visit http://www.orlandotaikodojo.com/

To end Asian Heritage Month, the Asian community of Orlando celebrated the 4th annual Asian Cultural Festival at the Orlando Fashion Square Mall on Saturday, May 30.

Filipino Student Association of UCF, the Chinese American Association and Orlando Taiko Dojo displayed their respective countries through live music and dances.

Hosted by the Asian American Heritage Council of Central Florida, the festival showcased the diverse Asian community within the Orlando and central Florida area. The countries that were represented were China, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

While the admission was free, the festival raised funds for a scholarship that recognizes minority students of Asian descent for their excellence in academia, community service and preservation of culture and language. The $1,000 scholarship fund was presented to the AAHC by SunTrust Bank.

The festival included live performances put on by the many Asian American organizations of central Florida. Organizations such as the

various Asian cultures. Attendees were able to taste traditional dishes, purchase cultural clothing and accessories, and create arts and crafts. Other notable attendees included District Commissioner Robert Stuart, who opened with a celebratory words of the Asian community, stating that Asians make up 7% of the city of Orlando. Midnight Diner - 深夜食堂 [Shinya Shokudo]  By Ricky Ly - Founder of TastyChomps.com

Keeping with the gastronomy theme, each chapter of the film is named after a key dish like “grated yam on rice” or “neapolitan” relating to the main character’s story for the segment - often a comfort food designed specifically for the character’s story. It’s all Japanese soul food in essence. There is a chapter of the film with characters involved in the Fukushima earthquake disaster, something still fresh in the collective mind of Japan as a country, and still a scar from which many are recovering with both the physical rebuilding efforts as well as the emotional. The film, like people do, stumbles along at times as the characters interact and try in their own ways to heal from their emotional scars.

Set in a small late night diner in the busy, frenetic Shinjuku district of Tokyo, director Joji Matsuoka’s Midnight Diner (深夜食堂- Shinya Shokudo) is a heart-warming culinary themed drama that intimately delights the senses and comforts the soul. Based on the popular manga and hit Japanese television drama of the same name, Midnight Diner brings a collection of light hearted and poignant vignettes and short stories surrounding the establishment, whose mysterious proprietor and chef is known only as the Master (Kaoru Kobayashi). As the day comes to an end and people make their way home, the Master’s own day begins.

the diner’s motley crew clientele, each beautifully flawed in their own way, come and go to share in the communal experience of both eating together and local gossip around the bar, serving as a form of dining group therapy. It’s at the same time a cathartic healing process and rather entertaining to catch and overhear intimate details of the customer’s day.

Each night, the restaurant plays host to an eclectic group of late night diners. A gay drag queen bar owner and local yakuza gangster come together in the name of righteousness. A mistress (played by the stunning Saki Takaoka), whose graceful looks are slowly fading away, has her financial future thrown in doubt when her suitor passes away without leaving her name in his will. A young homeless migrant worker shows up one night abruptly, and does a quick dine and dash. One night, there’s even a deceased guest in the form of a mysterious funerary urn that joins the diners.

The Master attends to their stories and conjures up just the right dish, the right prescription for their ailments. The characters are often quirky and charming, at times hilarious and melancholy, not totally developed given the condensed timeframe of the film itself, but each interesting in their own imperfections.

It’s both fun and fascinating to watch these misfits and outsiders interact and to see the way they almost rebel against the accepted behaviors and rigid norms of Japanese society. Open only from the hours of midnight till 7am,

16

ASIA TREND

There’s an unexplained long gash that runs down the left side of the Master’s face, a scar from another time, another past life. The Master’s past is not explicitly told, but he stands by listening to the stories all while quietly cooking in the tiny kitchen for his guests.

The scenes are filmed gorgeously, particularly the close quartered cooking sequences inside the bar’s petite kitchen. From sizzling plates of spaghetti and marinara sauce to tiny sausages cut intricately to look like octupi, the cooking leaves your mouth watering.

Director Joji Matsuoka brings viewers into the world of Japan’s deep love of food in Midnight Diner, but also brings insight into the daily lives of people living in Tokyo and their daily yearnings and struggles. People come to the Midnight Dinner as an escape from modern pressures, and like the film itself, it’s all about comfort food for the soul. Rating: 4.0/5.0 Midnight Diner, 深夜食堂, [Shinya Shokudo]. [Japan] [2015]. Directed by Joji Matsuoka. Written by Yaro Abe, Katsuhiko Manabe, Joji Matsuoka. Starring Kaoru Kobayashi, Saki Takaoka, Tokio Emoto, Mikako Tabe, Kimiko Yo, Toshiki Ayata, Yutaka Matsushige, Michitaka Tsutsui, Akiko Kikuchi, Yuko Tanaka, Joe Odagiri. 119 mins. In Japanese with English subtitles.

Ricky Ly is a long time, avid fan of Asian films. He is the author of the Food Lovers’ Guide to Orlando and the publisher of the food blog, TastyChomps.com. He enjoys traveling to far off places with his wife, May, family and friends. He hopes to change the world for the better one day.

Business After Hours at the BB&T Bank The Asian American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida officially introduced BB&T Bank as the Chamber’s inaugural Corporate Patron at a recent Business After Hours reception in recognition of Asian American Heritage Month. Hosting the networking event was Hung Nguyen, Vice President at BB&T, and Kathy Hazelwood, BB&T Vice President and Regional Multicultural Markets Officer.

“The new Corporate Patron program is an opportunity for companies who support the Asian American business community to participate at a higher level in our business-to-business initiatives with our members,” said Gail Rayos, president of the Asian American Chamber. “We welcome BB&T to the Chamber and appreciate the enthusiasm and insights the bank leadership already has shared with our

Rethink Homelessness

 Andrae Bailey, CEO of Central Florida Commission on Homelessness Reprinted from Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Vision Magazine

the homeless as real people with real needs. Last year, we changed minds together, and this year, 2015, is the time for us to combine all of our talents, time, and treasures, to change the lives of the homeless. We would like to issue a call to every leader, advocate, philanthropist, elected official, business owner, faith leader, and caring member of this community, and ask you to ponder this one simple question: WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO THIS YEAR TO CHANGE THE LIVES OF THOSE WHO ARE HOMELESS? Here are two simple ways; we will be training volunteers and then perform a large-scale community point-in-time count (surge) of homeless individuals with the goal of creating a registry and identifying homeless Veterans.

2014 was a tremendous year for the Central Florida Commission on Homelessness. In keeping with our mission to identify long-term sustainable solutions for those who are homeless in Central Florida, we are bringing the community together and finding resources for addressing homelessness in Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties. Thousand of viewers followed our advocacy campaign, “Rethink Homelessness,” on social media, local television, and billboards located throughout the community. Meanwhile, “Cardboard Stories,” our video that chronicled the stories of the homeless the street of Orlando, went viral with more than 5 million views from around the world. The pinnacle of our year was the community trip to Houston, where more than 75 top leaders, including Orange County Mayor, Teresa Jacobs, and City of Orlando Mayor, Buddy Dyer, got an up-close and personal look at how that city has reduced its homeless population by more than half in the past three years. This momentum has led to a new wave of public and private sector investments. In late December, Florida Hospital, through the single, largest private-sector gift given in Central Florida history, committed $6 million toward helping homeless efforts. Consequently, Orange Country and the city of Orlando jurisdictions have new plans and commitments as well. Many of those who have experienced homelessness have been on the streets for years, maybe even decades. In order to move from the streets into a home of their own, they will need furniture, dishes and other household items we often take for granted. However, more than

24

ASIA TREND

anything, they might need someone who cares enough to simply have a conversation with them. The local charities cannot do this work by themselves. This year, a new army of volunteers is needed to help transform lives. It is the Commission’s hope to enlist more than 1,000 “foot soldiers” through the Rethink Change campaign. While the majority of the homeless in our area are categorically chronic there are many families who are living on the streets as well. Many of them moved to Central Florida in search of a better way of life but lacking a support system, now live in hotels, shelters, doubled up with relatives, or even in their cars. In an effort to assist with these families, the Commission in partnership with the University of Central Florida has established a Family Homelessness Committee. This committee, led by Mayor Jacobs and Dick Batchelor, is comprised of elected officials, faith and business leaders, DCF, healthcare providers, funders, government, and other non-profits support services, and will examine other communities, such as Salt Lake City, to develop a regional plan.

In collaboration with the local Veterans Affairs (VA) and Homeless Services Network (HSN), a “Surge” outreach initiative will take place to locate every homeless Veteran in Central Florida. The “Surge” count will take place across the region during the week of July 20. Community advocates will lead hundreds of volunteers in this effort to identify homeless Veterans in need. Your participation is needed. Training for the “Surge” count will take place the week of July 13th. Volunteer assignments will be given at or after the training. You must attend one of the training sessions to participate: To sign up as a volunteer for any of these training classes please email: communications@impacthomelessness.org Or phone 321-710-4663 ext. 2 Secondly, you can join us for a special event hosted by the Citrus Club and the Young Executive Club, benefiting the Central Florida Commission on Homelessness; Diamonds are Forever Casino Night,. This event will be held at the Citrus Club on Saturday, August 29, from 6 pm till 10 pm. For more information, purchase of tickets, or sponsorship opportunities, please contact Nina at nina@impacthomelessness.org

With all of this momentum, 2015 is not the year to loosen up the reins, but rather the time to keep forging ahead for additional investments that will help the chronically homeless individuals and families find a home of their own. We have real solutions, but those solutions require the financial backing of philanthropists and corporate leaders. Only then can those solutions be implemented to see tangible results. We have challenged the community to see AsiaTrend.org Marching into our 10th year │ Reaching more than 10,000 readers every month

Embracing Our Interconnectedness ---Go for Green---

 By Conchita Hsu 俞孟貞

On a festive spring day last month, Orlando celebrated its 10th annual Central Florida Earth Day, an exciting day of fun and educational exhibits and vendors at Lake Eola Park downtown. A vegetarian restaurant, Dandelion Communitea Café, started this Central Florida Earth Day ten years ago which subsequently has been hosted by the group Vegans and Vegetarians of Central Florida. Over two hundred organizations came out to support as sponsors and vendors, including many Asian-American associations, such as our very own Asia Trend Magazine (one of the Garden Sponsors); Fo Guang Shan Guang Ming Temple 佛光山光明寺; Buddha’s Light International Association Orlando Chapter 國際佛 光會奧蘭多分會 and Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation Orlando branch 佛教慈濟基金會奧蘭多聯絡處. Large crowds this year enjoyed lots of activities. The variety included live bands, acoustic music performances, puppetry and kids’ shows, yoga, qigong, recycling, arts and crafts, humane society talks, speakers on environmental activism, local initiatives to protect the environment and many others. All were well received. This event highlighted how easy and fun it is to help the planet! One might wonder how can eating a vegetarian diet benefit the earth? It may surprise you that animal agriculture gener-

ates more greenhouse gases than cars, planes, trucks, boats, and all forms of transportation combined! Livestock generate over a third of humaninduced methane gas and two thirds of nitrous oxide, both linked to climate change. Much land is used for livestock and the pasture needed to feed them – this is the major driver of deforestation. Diseases are rampant in the overcrowded factory farms, not to mention all that manure (pee-ew!) that pollutes the water and earth. Finally, as animals are ultimately less efficient in energy conversion than plants are, producing meat is always more energy intensive than plant-based foods. A kilogram of beef requires 43,000 liters of water to make! Seven times as much grain is used to feed cows as is used to feed humans in the US alone. And it’s not just land-based meat. Seafood is also dangerous for the environment – large fishing trawlers in the ocean overfish many species, and millions of other animals such as dolphins, whales and turtles get killed by nets every day. The alternative, farm-raised fish, generates a concentrated mess of feces that pollute the local water and often times, mass antibiotics for the fish are just dumped into the water, not something we want to get in the waterway! There are many reasons that people are vegetarian. Many of the various Asian religions

---Buddhism, Hinduism, Chinese folk religions, etc. --- have branches with strong vegetarian roots. But environmental protection is definitely a reason that anyone of any religion can agree with. At this event, we saw the huge impact that we can each take by eating less meat and less seafood, even going meat-free for just one meal every day, or just one day every week, can reduce one’s carbon footprint and environmental impact more than any other routine activity! Let’s all take personal responsibility – change comes one person at a time. Let’s all be mindful of what we eat, and treasure our environment. Surely, we see that our choice to eat more plantbased foods and less meat is better for all of us – our health, our loved ones, and our planet. Help save our planet for many generations to come. Embrace our interconnectedness and vow to make conscious choices. As simple as watching what we eat can make the world a better place. This writer and her family have been vegetarian for over two decades. Her own two sons, both Harvard honor graduates, have been vegetarian by choice their whole life. A vegetarian diet can be a conscious choice to help the environment, but it can also easily be part of a healthy and happy life!

How to Select the Best College for You Finding the right “college fit” is more complicated than simply scanning Top 10 rankings, visiting a campus, or picking a school based on reputation and prestige. Sending a child to college is like planting a tree: you need to select an appropriate place, with the right sunlight, water, soil and fertilizer to match the plant. A college education is evolutionary, and the selection of the right school is a life-changing decision, for better or worse. Published rankings are valuable starting points, but they are only starting points. No single person has attended all of the top universities, so realize that rankings are stitched together from bits and pieces of information. The criteria and formulas used to create rankings are non-scientific, developed and changed primarily to create “news.” Rankings are merely rough guesses, but if you look carefully, you may find some colleges that you had not considered before. Only a few universities have the money to provide the very best education in all academic areas. Research each college’s academic strengths carefully. Make sure that the Major you are considering has strong faculty, extensive resources, and a challenging curriculum. Some students find out too late that their college classes are easier than what they encountered in high school. Consider not just the curriculum, but also the teaching methods of each university. Colleges are comprised of Deans and professors who devote their lives determining not only what to teach, but how to teach. Everybody learns differently, and colleges teach differently. Does your student learn better by listening, by watching, by doing, or by interacting? Look deeply not only into the varied learning environments that colleges provide, but also into the learning abilities and preferences of the student. Investigate whether a college allows cross-registration into other programs. Several schools allow students to study at other colleges. For example, the colleges in the Boston Consortium – and there are now 16 of them – have incredibly flexible cross-registration policies. Even within one school, some colleges permit undergraduates to study in their graduate schools, while others do not.

Young people usually do not know what they wish to study, nor do they have a well-defined career path when they exit high school. Their lack of information creates problems when they try to develop life paths. In a college environment – where parents and counselors are no longer readily available – young students make uncertain decisions. They have never seen the subjects taught in college, and they have no experience in the job market. Because large universities push students to select majors immediately (even before arriving on campus), their students often change majors, sometimes multiple times. This adds years to college, slowing progress and raising costs. However, colleges that allow one or two years before selecting a major have much better on-time graduation rates. Also notice how each of these colleges use different styles of curricula for training their freshmen and sophomores, from guided exploration to heavy requirements to no requirements at all. Even a college calendar can greatly influence the educational experience. Students in universities that use a quarter system (in which students study in 3 of 4 calendar quarters) usually take more classes than those studying in a semester system. Also be aware that universities which require summer study create an environment that does not promote summer internships. Students who do not “get out there” before graduation have less-developed resumes and, regardless of the quality of their education, are at a disadvantage in obtaining jobs. A multitude of factors – not just academics, but extracurricular activities, location, and the student body profile and architecture – determine the true quality of a college education. Reading lists is only scratching the surface. Florida Anime Experience 2015

 By Yuni and Izumi Sakurada By Izumi Sakurada

Showcase authenticity and educating culture behind Japanese Anime MegaCon, Comic-Con, GeekyCon…many fandom conventions have been flourished over last 20 years and many take place in Central Florida. While these large scale conventions keep expanding, Florida Anime Experience has been specializing in “Japanese Anime” for the last 5 years. Florida Anime Experience 2015 was held at the Park Inn in Kissimmee on April 24, 25 and 26. Approximately 2,000 Japanese Anime fans attended. All three days’ programs were filled with the usual fandom panel discussions, voice-

actors meet-and-greet, vendors, artist alley, and Cosplay contest. However, this con uncommonly also included several cultural and language seminars and workshops about Japan such as Kendo (Japanese fencing), Origami, and Bonsai. Tom, the man behind the Florida Anime Experience, created this convention based off of a principle of authenticity. Having been an avid Star Wars fan, since the age 15, he has participated at many fandom conventions as a visitor. Later, he became involving working for the organizers.

Through his 20 plus years of experiences in this industry, he has developed the idea for his own show. Why including Japanese cultural education in the program? He recalls his mother asking him when he was a kid, “Do you know where Star Wars came from? Where the idea came from?” After looking into it, he found out the source of inspiration and by knowing it, he could have a better understanding of something he already loved. This is what he wants to bring to these avid anime fans. Although they tend to love Japanese pop-

World Tai Chi & Qigong Day Central Florida 2015  By Sam Winters By Alfonzo Lopez and Sherry Duthing

Orlando Tai Chi enthusiasts “happy” with the signed proclamation, and to be a part of this “World Wide Event”! Sifu Sam Winters (Organizer) Welcoming all participants to “the event”

The last Saturday in April always marks the beginning of this worldwide event – World Tai Chi & Qigong Day. This year the event dates matched up with the long- running Central Florida Earth Day. I asked Larry Rumbough the promoter, if I and my group could be a part of this event. I told him that the World Tai Chi Day believes the internal energy can “heal the world, one step, one breath at a time”. After telling him this, he gladly supported “our group” and gave us a place to stage the event. At 9:45 am, after giving an introductory speech, I welcomed all participants and showed everyone the “proclamation” signed by Mayor Buddy Dyer “honoring this day”. Promptly, at 10 am, the ‘energy-wave” began with more than 10 people performing their “hand forms” and “Qigongs”. This awakening of this “positive energy” encompassed the “area” and bystanders felt the “goodness of the group” while the “Qi” transferred to the next 10 am time zone! This lasted for 30 minutes before we kicked off the question and answer session with an overwhelming consensus that our group made a “difference in the world”! Lunch was just around the corner, and
