2015 Vietnamese New Year Festival in Orlando hosted by the Vietnamese Catholic Church On Jan 31 weekend, the Vietnamese Catholic Church of Orlando, St Philip Phan van minh hosted their annual Vietnamese New Year Festival at the Central Florida Fairgrounds for 2015 – the year of the goat/sheep. The festival is full of Vietnamese street food vendors, playground and game area for kids, performances and cultural shows, and much more. Some of our favorite items this year were the banh cuon, rice crepes stuffed with mushroom and pork, the sugarcane juice, the bun bo hue spicy beef rice noodle soup, and the chao long, rice porridge with offal. Still did not try the hot vit lon duck fetus egg though. Too scary for us. (See http://tastychomps.com/2015/01/guideto-celebrating-chinesevietnamese-lunar-newyear-in-orlando-2015.html).

The Five Principles of Yoga Yoga is an ancient Indian body of knowledge that dates back more than 5000 years ago. The word “Yoga” came from the Sanskrit word “yuj” which means “to unite or integrate.” Yoga then is about the union of a person’s own consciousness and the universal consciousness. Ancient Yogis had a belief that in order for man to be in harmony with himself and his environment, he has to integrate the body, the mind, and the spirit. For these three to be integrated, emotion, action, and intelligence must be in balance. The Yogis formulated a way to achieve and maintain this balance and it is done through exercise, breathing, and Meditation - the three main Yoga structures.

our physical body is meant to move and exercise. Proper Exercise is achieved through the Yoga Postures or Asana which systematically works on all parts of the body - stretches and tones the Muscles and Ligaments, enhances the flexibility of the spine and the joints, and improves Blood Circulation. The asanas are designed to regulate the physical and physiological functions of the body. Practicing these Yoga Poses makes

Principle 4: Proper Diet

In Yoga, the body is treated with care and respect for it is the primary instrument in man’s work and growth. Yoga Exercises improve circulation, stimulate the abdominal organs, and put pressure on the glandular system of the body, which can generally result to better health. The Five Principles of Yoga are the basis of attaining a healthy body and mind through the Practice of Yoga.

Principle 1: Proper Relaxation By releasing the tension in the muscles and putting the whole body at rest, you revitalize your Nervous System and achieve inner peace, making you feel relaxed and refreshed. This relaxed feeling is carried over into all your activities and helps you conserve your energy and let go of all worries and fears.

Principle 2: Proper Exercise This principle revolves around the idea that

should be deep, slow and rhythmical. To achieve this, you need to be able to regulate the length and duration of your inhalation, exhalation, and the retention of air in your lungs or the pauses between breath. Yoga Breathing Exercises or Pranayama teaches you on how you can recharge your body and control your mental state by regulating the flow of Prana - the life force. This helps you achieve a calmer and more focused mind, and increases your energy level.

your body relaxed, gives you more strength and energy, and rejuvenates the various systems of the body. The Yoga Posture goes together with Proper Breathing. Each movement and stretch should be guided by your breath, making your movement and your breath coordinated and feel like one and the same. The execution of the Asana is beneficial to the body, and at the same time contributes to spiritual and Mental growth.

Principle 3: Proper Breathing This means breathing fully and rhythmically, making use of all the parts of your Lungs to increase your oxygen intake. Proper Breathing

What you eat extremely affects your mind. Improper diet results to mental inefficiency and blocks spiritual awareness. Proper Diet is one that nourishes both mind and body. It should be well balanced and based on natural foods. Proper Diet in Yoga also means eating in moderation and eating only when you are hungry. We sometimes tend to eat when we are upset, using food to fill the gap or the emptiness that we feel. Bad eating habits will cause our senses to be dull that we won’t even notice how much we eat or how it tastes and may result to diet related ailments like Obesity and Diabetes. Food should sustain our body. It should keep the body light and supple, the mind calm, and it should also help in keeping a strong immune system.

Principle 5: Positive Thinking and Meditation The way we think highly affects our way of life. Practice keeping a positive outlook in life, this will facilitate in having a peaceful mind. Positive thinking and Meditation helps you remove negative thoughts and puts your mind under perfect control.

Asia Trend / YESS Center Christmas Caroling On December 21, 2014 the Orlando Japanese Baptist Church spread some holiday cheer to the shoppers at Orlando Fashion Square Mall. Caroling was one of four performances part of the mini Christmas concert hosted by the Asia Trend / YESS Center. The unique part of this performance was the bilingual aspect; all the songs were sung in both Japanese and English. Songs like “Joy to The World”, “Angels We Have Heard on High”, and “Oh Come, All Ye Faithful” were sung gleefully and led by Pastor Hiro Takaoka and his wife, Megumi Takaoka. The performance also featured Mrs. Takaoka’s beautiful soprano voice. The finale was the crowd favorite,

“We Wish You A Merry Christmas” as the choir wished the shoppers a Happy Holiday. The pastor expressed his delight in saying, “We were so glad that we could share the joy of Christmas with many people through our voice of singing. Many thanks to the mall and the people who helped us to have this wonderful opportunity!” The Orlando Japanese Baptist Church is currently the only Japanese church located in Florida. It was established in September of 2012 and locates at the Dover Shores Baptist Church. They welcome anyone regardless of their nationality. A Drummer’s Dream

 By Katherine Ragamat

Taiko drummer Jason Seymore raises funds to study taiko in Japan Musicians dream of making it big by selling millions of records and performing for arenas full of people, but taiko drummer Jason Seymore follows a different beat. Instead of playing for the masses, Seymore plans to teach music to classes by opening his own taiko drumming school. Before he can do that, Seymore must study in the place where taiko first began: Japan. Jason Seymore, a 27-year-old junior business student at the University of Central Florida, is an instructor and performer at Orlando Taiko Dojo and has been playing for eight years. His passion for taiko drumming began at age 15 when he saw a taiko drumming performance for the first time. “I think what brought me to taiko was that it was more organic,” said Seymore. “It was more about what’s in the heart. It was about what you felt.” Once Seymore turned 18, he moved from Tampa to Orlando to pursue taiko drumming at the Orlando Taiko Dojo. With the instruction of his sensei, Takemasa Ishikura, Seymore climbed the ranks to become a professional performer as well as gaining enough knowledge to help aid in instructing. After eight years of studying, performing and teaching Japanese taiko with the Orlando Taiko Dojo, Seymore wondered how he could continue playing taiko for his future. “I started thinking ‘What can I do to help continue the Japanese tradition?’” said Seymore.

“That’s when it dawned on me that may my destiny lies with opening my own school and provide that opportunity to other people.” Before he can open his school, Seymore must go through an extensive amount of preparation. Although Seymore has been studying taiko for almost a decade, there is still more he needs to learn not only about drumming, but also about the Japanese culture. “After talking to other professional drummers, everyone says to study in Japan because you can really connect with the land where [taiko] came from and the people created it,” said Seymore. “It’s a whole different aspect that you just cannot get here in the United States.”

One of his biggest supporters is Elena Farrance, 58, a fellow taiko drummer who Seymore has also instructed over the years at the Orlando Taiko Dojo. With a generous donation of $300, Farrance has greatly contributed to Seymore’s financial goal.

Seymore plans to further his training in Nagano, Japan, where he will take part in a weeklong taiko drumming course called INADANI. It is led by renowned taiko artist and performer, Art Lee of the internationally touring group, Wadaiko Tokara. It will allow Seymore to grow a closer connection to the practice of taiko.

“Jason is a very talented, very dedicated taiko drummer and talent should be supported,” said Farrance. “He feels taiko with his heart, with his body, with his mind, so I don’t even think not to support talent.”

While the course will teaches invaluable skills, traveling to Japan can be pricey especially for Seymore, who is still a college student living on a student budget. Although he is working two part-time jobs, the ultimate costs of the Japan trip have made Seymore’s taiko dream a bit more difficult to reach. Luckily, Seymore has found a way to reach those goals. Seymore has begun raising funds through the fundraising website, GoFundMe. com. The donations he received through the site help with the costs of the taiko course tuition, hotel pricing, airfare to Japan and other expenses such as food and transfer services. His goal is to reach $3,500.

With the support of his family, friends and the taiko drumming community, Seymore is closer to making his taiko dream a reality. Over the course of three months, he has raised $2,505 and is grateful for every penny. He hopes to reach his goal by this summer. “I am not worried about trying to make a buck,” said Seymore. “My focus, my goal is to continue tradition, to continue history and keep it alive for other people to enjoy.” * You can donate to Jason Seymore’s fundraiser by visiting http://www.gofundme.com/ taiko_dream *

AACC Ends 2014 with Small Business Strategies Luncheon Our final event on December 10, 2014 was sponsored by John Mai of Merrill Lynch Wealth Management at the East End Market Upper Deck in Orlando. For some of us first-timers to this restaurant – food was very good. Great mix of attendees – bankers, entrepreneurs, attorneys, and realtors. John Mai is a long-time member of the AACC. He has served on the Board of Directors and as an Officer. He co-chaired our 2014 GDA Event, which was a “sold out” event. At this luncheon, we learned about retirement planning, tax strategies for business owners, entrepreneurs and self-employed professionals.

Great emphasis was put on how to stay within the IRS rules. So often we tend to listen to people “not in the financial profession” only to find ourselves in trouble with the IRS. Seek out financial professionals to protect your business. Pauline Ho of Laus Consulting also provided information on the tax codes, filing requirements and what companies should be looking out for. Again, helping us to stay out of trouble. This was a great event to end 2014 and excellent venue for networking. We look forward to 2015 to offer more educational lunch and learns.

Join us on March 27, 2015 to celebrate “Asian American Night at the Amway Center”. We will have great entertainment, t-shirts with ticket purchase and a fun-filled evening. UCF alumni owned Impress Ink debuts Orlando’s first Mobile Screen Printing performance art at Artlando on Sept 27th, 2014  By Ricky Ly, Founder of TastyChomps.com

Impress Ink (www.impressink.com) started as the brainchild of Michael Cho and Xi Guo beginning in their garage back in 2008 while college students at UCF. Fast forward 6 years later and today, Impress Ink is currently a established local printer with clients such as PepsiCo, Publix, Winn Dixie, UCF, Orange County, City of Orlando and many others focusing on fulfilling screen printing, embroidery and promotional products right in the heart of Orlando.

add to Orlando’s artistic flavorful tapestry. Asia Trend asks these two young men about their inspiration and drive as Asian American entrepreneurs.

Though screen printing is one of the most ancient print forms still in great use today, it is an art in itself and a wonderful process to watch. With the cultural influence of cities like Seattle, New York and LA that have taken screen printing into a Live and a Mobile concept for art shows, concerts and a diverse number of events, co-founder Mike Cho created a similar concept to bring to Orlando’s emerging dynamic arts culture, a concept that can showcase the art of textile screen printing in person, a first of it’s kind in Orlando. We all know that t-shirts are the main form of expression in American culture and most large scale events usually provide it’s own “official” tee. Impress ink hopes to go beyond that by providing a show for event attendees to see the process and their own shirt being printed before their eyes. Impress Ink collaborated with Artlando on September 27, 2014 to launch it’s first official event where they printed 4 designs created by local artists. Impress Ink doesn’t just hope to be a local print shop, but a new establishment that can

Asia Trend Magazine - What inspired you both to start Impress Ink? Mike Cho, Co-Founder, ImpressInk.com Firstly, it was a solution to benefit ourselves. We believed that if we bought simple equipment to create our own T-shirts, we would be saving the hassle of ordering shirts and over spending money that we pretty much did not have. We were in college at that time and were broke. While many people would see this as a disadvantage, we saw it as an advantage because what did we have to lose? Nothing - but all the world to gain.

business that fulfills ideas that benefit both businesses and organizations. Asia Trend - What are some tips you can give to young Asian Americans who are looking for inspiration for career and want to do something different from medical, law, and engineering, the so called “stereotypical” careers? Mike Cho - I believe that Asian Americans shouldn’t be singled out to only fulfill some specific jobs. We are all able to spread our talents across the board and commit to things that are out of the norm. I do understand that there’s a generation gap between my generation and our immigrant parents, but in the end I believe if we all show commitment and passion for something in due time you will receive respect. When I started this my parents were actually discouraging me because I was still a student and they did not want it to affect my academics. Today, they are extremely proud of our success and encourage us to continue our path and dreams. Three keywords that I would tell anyone would be: commit, focus and persist.

After making the investment we pretty much had to force ourselves how to create a process and use the equipment. It definitely was not easy at all, we would sometimes stay up to two and three in the morning to finish just the simplest jobs. But in turn, our services spread across the University of Central Florida’s student involvement community and now has become a full

Last year during the Thanksgiving weekend, the Suncoast Association of Chinese Americans (SACA)’s Golden Dragon dragon boat team dedicated a day to helping out at Metropolitan Ministries. The Golden Dragon team spent the morning in the kitchen cooking and preparing lunch for the residents of Metropolitan Ministries’ transitional housing. Volunteer groups can work in three hour shifts in several different areas. These include the kitchen, the nursery, thrift store, food shelving, and visiting with the homeless. Southern Demographic Report:

Asian American’s Economic and Political Power Increases in Florida

tant to the South’s economy, particularly in Washington, DC, and Dallas, Texas. There are more than 70,000 Asian Americanowned businesses in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area that employ more than 130,000 people, and the 38,000 Asian American-owned businesses in Dallas issue more than $11 billion in annual payroll.

• Asian American buying power is also crucial to the South’s economy. Asian American and NHPIs buying power more than doubled in Florida, Georgia, Texas and Maryland and Virginia. • Asian American and NHPIs nationally have a buying power topping $509 million nationally Myrna Macatangay (Jackson Memorial Hospital); Joy Bruce (NANAY Founder), Barry Snyder, Esq (NANAY Board), , Rowena Racca (NANAY Board); Jay Gogalija (Asian American Federation of Florida, Coordinator-Northeast)

On October 18, 2014, National Alliance to Nurture the Aged and Youth (NANAY, Inc), in partnership with the Asian American Federation of Florida-South Florida, Organization of Chinese Americans-South Florida, United Chinese Association of Florida and Asian Americans Advancing Justice / Asian American Justice Center, launched the first ever Southern Demographic Report showing a 70 percent increase in the number of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (NHPIs) now comprising the fastest growing racial groups in the Southern States, Including Florida. Nearly 160,000 Asian Americans and over 12,000 NHPIs reside in the Miami Metropolitan Statistical Area comprised of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. There are nearly 23,000 Asian American-owned businesses that employ nearly 36,000 people and distribute over $840 million in annual payroll. Florida’s Asian American and NHPI buying power was nearly $17 Billion in 2010. Between 2004 and 2012, the number of Asian who registered to vote and cast ballots in Florida grew 73% each, rates similar to those of Latinos (76% and 70% respectively). The report shows that Asian Americans and NHPI will be important in future elections in the South (and nationally). Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are a growing political power and in certain jurisdictions in the South, Asian Americans and NHPIs will have the ability to produce the margin

of victory. “The Asian American-owned businesses and buying power are crucial to the South’s economy and the population’s growing political power has the ability to produce the margin of victory in future elections not only in the South but also nationally”, says Winnie Tang, President of the Asian American Federation of Florida. A Community of Contrasts: Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders in the South, 2014 is the latest in a series of reports that promote a more sophisticated understanding of Asian Americans and NHPI. Focused on the South, this report compiles the latest data on growing Asian American and NHPI communities in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Miami, and the Washington, DC metropolitan area. These areas were chosen based on the size of their Asian American and NHPI communities and the presence of local partner organizations with the capacity to use the information to pursue change.

2) The Asian Americans and NHPI will be important in future elections in the South (and nationally). Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are a growing political power and in certain jurisdictions in the South, Asian Americans and NHPIs will have the ability to produce the margin of victory. • Majority of Asian American immigrants in Dallas, Houston, Miami and Washington, DC metropolitan area have naturalized • Asian Americans in Florida, Georgia, Texas, Maryland and Virginia either rank first or second to Latinos in growth in voter registration and voter turnout. • Virginia -- the highest number of Asian Americans who registered to vote increased by 136 percent and the number who cast ballots increased by 180 percent between 2004 and 2012. • By 2050, Asian Americans and NHPIs could top nearly 10 percent of the population nationwide The report also included the following policy

recommendations: 1) Approximately two-thirds of Asian Americans in the South are immigrants. For this reason, many are limited English proficient (LEP) and face challenges communicating, which limits their ability to access jobs, education and basic services. o Federal, state and local governments should ensure adequate funding to support outreach to LEP communities, the hiring and training of bilingual staff, and translation of materials. o Federal, state and local agencies should provide high-quality, language-appropriate small business training programs and services for Asian American and NHPI business owners. 2) Asian Americans are consistently less likely than Whites to hold a high school degree, with Southeast Asians having high school graduation rates similar to Latinos and African Americans. Asian Americans and NHPIs are more likely than Whites to be enrolled in public school. o Government, foundations, corporations and other stakeholders should address educational disparities through increased funding to public schools in low-income and immigrant communities, supporting programs that address the linguistic and cultural barriers immigrant students face. 3) Access to health care: Asian American and NHPIs face a variety of health disparities, but data shows that uninsured rates for Asian Americans and NHPIs is nearly twice that of Whites. In Texas, 44 percent of Asian Ameri-

Government agencies, community -based organizations and those in the health industry should continue to reach out and educate Asian Americans and NHPIs about the Affordable Care Act, promoting access by ensuring the enforcement of its antidiscrimination provisions.

munity of Contrasts was launched at Marjorie & William McDonald Center in North Miami Beach, was attended by more than 100 community leaders, government officials and local legislators. Marita Etcubanez, Director of Programs, Asian Americans Advancing Justice/AAJC presented the findings, followed by a panel discussion by distinguished speakers.

4) Home ownership: Across the South, NHPI and Asian Americans are less likely to be homeowners. Many Asian Americans and NHPI face challenges in finding affordable rental housing. Federal, state and local agencies and the private sector should expand housing counseling and consumer-protection services while also expanding affordable rental housing and homeownership opportunities for families throughout the South.

The Honorable Barbara Watson (Florida State Representative, District 107) emphasized the need for Asian Americans to advocate for the issues that matter to them, and enumerated ways to get involved in the legislative process. Juanita Mainster, Health Insurance Navigator, Epilepsy Foundation of Florida, discussed the importance of getting health insurance for the uninsured through the Affordable Care Act. Will Garnitz, South Florida District Director, Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor, explained how the government is ensuring fair labor and equitable compensation among workers, irrespective of race, color and gender. Carolyn Thompson, Florida Voter Protection Advocate, Advancement Project discussed the importance of registering and getting out to vote.

5) Access to food assistance and other poverty programs: Federal, state and local jurisdictions should work to preserve and expand access to social safety-net programs and invest resources in culturally and linguistically appropriate outreach and education to growing immigrant communities. 6) Asian Americans and NHPIs need to ensure assistance to overcome language barriers at the polls to achieve full political power. Federal, state and local agencies and elected officials should increase their investment in community building and civic engagement with Asian Americans and NHPI by strengthening voter protection laws.
