Orlando -- The Council For Filipino American Organizations of Central Florida (aka CFAO) held last June 20, a special “ Fiesta Flipina” marking the celebration of the 117th Anniversary of the declaration of Philippine independence. The red letter date in Philippine history was June 12, 1898, 117 years ago when the country declared its independence from the tyranny of Spanish colonialism, hoisted a Filipino flag and played a national anthem for the first time. It marked the end of the country’s almost four centuries of its bloody struggle for nationhood. With this significant act, the Philippines established the first constitutional democracy in Asia, and announced to the world the inherent nobility and dignity of the Filipino people. “Fiesta Filipina” was held at Mark Street Senior Center in Orlando. The day was proclaimed

Philippine Independence Day in the City of Orlando by Mayor Buddy Dyer. The proclamation was read by Luis Martinez, the City’s Director for Multicultural Affairs. The celebration began with a parade presentation of the evolution of Filipino Flags by members of the Knights of Rizal under the direction of Valentin Dagani, Jr. An entertainment program followed featuring the music of Asia Trend’s Gary Lau, the songs of Diana Roz and Ria Cristobal, and native dances performed by the University of Central Florida’s Filipino Student Association, the API Broadcasting Dance troupe, and Tampa’s Philippine Performing Arts. Iowa, China and Ethiopia: How One Couple Built Their Family through Birth, Adoption and Love interview with them, the story I originally set out to write had completely changed after hearing the Jensens’ experience of raising a family of 12 children, including four biological daughters, two daughters from China, four sons also from China as well as twin girls from Ethiopia. By the end of the interview, the story I originally had in my mind had transformed from one intending to focus on the changes the international adoption process has undergone throughout the years to instead, a story centered on the emotional experience and perspective of adoptive parents who, like their children, are deeply touched by the adoption experience.

Jane holding her daughter Claire shortly after receiving her in China (2002)

When I first set out to interview Jane and Dave Jensen of Decorah, Iowa, I envisioned walking away from our interview with a story about how the international adoption process has changed over the years for adoptive parents like the Jensens. I thought I would hear how adoptive parents now travel to the birth country of their child to meet him or her prior to bringing them home to the United States. (This is in comparison to earlier days when adoptive parents would hold their child for the first time at a U.S. airport after waiting hours for their new son or daughter’s international flight to hit U.S. soil.) Or a how the actual adoption process is now carried out in U.S. and local government offices in the child’s birth country, an approach much different from earlier times when such formalities were conducted in a U.S. courtroom. I expected to hear how the international adoption process has evolved since the 1970s when I was adopted, and whether things have changed for better or for worse. And while I did get answers to all these questions through my

With six of their children coming from China, the country has no doubt become a meaningful place to the Jensens. “China was a country we were drawn to,” Jane explained to me over email. “We love the Chinese people and culture, and the country has a very strong and organized adoption program. Our first adoption was Claire, born in China, and it was such an incredible experience that we soon adopted David, then Matthew, Amy, Luke and Jay.”

The Jensens started their family with four daughters: Erica, 25; Dana, 24; Kari, 23 and Kiersten, 20, all who are biological children. But as the couple realized they wanted to grow their family and learned of the many kids in the world who didn’t have someone to fill the role of a parent, they decided to adopt rather than give birth to another child. This decision led to the adoptions of Claire,14, from Fujian, In China for Jay’s adoption with Jane and children Matthew (front left), China; David, 13, from Guangxi, David (center) and Claire (second from right), all who were also adopted from China China; Matthew, 12, from Xinjiang, China; Amy, 10, from Guangdong, China; According to Jane, children available for Luke, 9, from Jiangsu, China; Abbeke and adoption from China have mostly been abanAsmere, 8, from Woylata, Ethiopia and Jay, 5, doned. Abandonment occurs for many reasons from Hunan, China. although the vast majority of Chinese children available for adoption have some degree of special need versus the “healthy” infant girl that was common when adoptions first began in China in the 1990’s due to the country’s onechild policy and a cultural preference for sons. “We were drawn to children who had a medical need as we have access to great health care and knew this was something we could do,” Jane said. (Dave is also a physician.)

Adopting Luke in 2008

For each of their children’s adoptions, the Jensens traveled to China (and Ethiopia in the case of their twin girls) to carry out the adoption process. “I wouldn’t want it any other way,” Jane told me. “It was so beneficial for so many reasons to travel to their countries to adopt them. Read more at www.asiatrend.org

about how being adopted can affect a person’s life and identity, both as a child and an adult adoptee. “Our family has always been extremely open about adoption,” Jane and Dave told me. “It’s become part of natural discussions. We talk about each child’s adoption frequently, encourage questions, keep communication open and always give honest answers to their quesDave and Jane Jensen built their family through the birth of biological children as tions, even admitting we well as adopted children from China and Ethiopia don’t know the answer when “Primarily, when adopting our children, or we don’t. Our children know we are available any child, everything in their lives is completely to talk about their adoptions and their stories turned upside down and can be very stress- anytime they would like, and this open comful for them at first. Everything they had known munication has been so important.” was changing: their home, the people caring The couple said questions come up at the for them, the language, the sounds, smells, most expected and most unexpected times, food, etc.” and as the children grow older, the things they The requirement of having adoptive parents travel to their children’s birth country not only allows the new family to focus on bonding with each other, but also lets adoptive parents become immersed in the culture their chid was born into. While in China, the Jensens toured their children’s home provinces and collected special items to save for them when their kids grew up. When possible, they also visited their children’s orphanages or foster families, giving themselves a real glimpse into the early lives of their kids. Adoption is amazing, the Jensens acknowledged, but isn’t always easy. “There can be challenging moments along the way, as with any parenting experience but, in our situation, any challenges are far outweighed by the overwhelming positives, and we’d do it all over again in a heartbeat,” they told me. Currently living in a small Iowa community, the Jensens truly are an example of the changing definition of the American family: multi-racial, bound by biology and adoption, and truly, in every sense of the word, a blended family. While a typical Jensen family photo, to Jane’s chagrin, is often missing a family member or two (“I need to schedule a photographer!” she wrote to me) it is still an incredible image of diversity and love. And while their family can be considered a shining example of the beauty of international adoption, both Dave and Jane are very open and realistic

and psychological issues,” Jane said. “These groups also have great references for professionals in all areas. Most adoption agencies are equipped with information and resources to direct parents to when/if needed.” “Each child reacted differently and in their own way to the adoption process and the tremendous changes taking place in their lives,” they said. “Often, [they were] grieving for their special caretaker along with the all changes taking place. For example, [sometimes they would be] crying, quiet and reserved, angry, scared, etc. This was always seen as a positive sign by us, as it meant they had formed bonds and would be able to do so again.” Like many families formed by adoption, the Jensen family is a reminder that being a parent is not something only defined by blood. At the end of the day, being a parent is a relationship truly created by love. After that special ingredient is solidified, the rest falls into place.

as parents worry about the most are issues such as racism, stereotypes and how their kids will deal with these issues. “We live in a small community in Iowa where there is not much diversity and so far we are unaware of any issues in this regard,” Jane said. “However, we know it is inevitable that they will encounter this at some point in their futures, and they need to be prepared.” The Jensens have taken solace in the fact that they are not alone in this journey as adoptive parents. Today, the internet and social media are incredible resources for adoptive parents and blended families, and the Jensens have benefited from “an amazing adoption community online.” “Groups exist relating to most any issue, whether it be regarding the adoption process, issues arising before, during and after the adoption, as well as medical, emotional

Nemours Children’s Hospital hosts Business After Hours Dozens of Asian American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida members enjoyed special tours and an inspiring presentation at the July Business After Hours sponsored by Nemours Children’s Health System. The event, held at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Medical City area of Lake Nona, was hosted by Nemours’ Brian Richardson. AACC President Gail Rayos used the occasion to announce the 2015 Golden Dragon Awards theme for the dinner and ceremony coming up on October 3, 2015 at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. “It’s only fitting, that here, in this setting where the care of our young people is an everyday priority, that we announce a shared commitment to our youth, and this year the AACC GDA theme will be ‘Engaging the Next Generation.”

The special presenter of the evening at the children’s hospital was Dr. Julie Wei, a pediatric otolaryngologist (an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist for children), who joined the Nemours Children’s Hospital team in 2013 and has been named one of the “Best Doctors in America”. Born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan, Dr. Wei shared an inspiring story of her family immigrating to Los Angeles when she was age 10 and her resolve to become a doctor that led her to medical school in New York, on to Kansas, to practice her specialty at the Mayo Clinic and ultimately to Orlando. She also has a passion for sharing her professional expertise and is a professor at the University of Central Florida School of Medicine. As a special gift to AACC members, Dr. Wei handed out copies of her family wellness book, A

Healthier Wei. Dr Wei was a living example of the many board-certified specialists who have come from top hospitals around the country because they share the Nemours Health System’s desire to create a pediatric health care facility that empowers patients and their caregivers, right here in Orlando. Nemours has grown to become one of the nation’s largest integrated pediatric health systems, providing hospital- and clinic-based specialty care, primary care, prevention and health information services, and research and medical education programs aimed at improving the lives of children and families throughout Florida and in the Delaware Valley region of the country.  By Asian American Chamber of Commerce ASIA TREND

The 2015 Orlando Main Street Awards were held on July 28 at The Abbey in downtown Orlando. Each Main Street presented a Volunteer of the Year award; a Merchant of the Year award and a Best Private Improvement of the Year award.

Pig Floyd’s Urban Barbakoa was recognized as the Best Private Improvement in Mills 50. The renovation of the restaurant, which used to be Atilla’s Turkish Kitchen, cost more than $400,000. Thomas Ward, owner, gutted the interior to create a clean, modern look and opened up the kitchen so patrons could watch chefs as they worked. The existing outdoor patio was extended into a seating area. Zagat named Pig Floyd’s as one of Orlando’s hottest new restaurants. “The Pig” is a welcome and popular addition to the hip, multiethnic Mills 50 neighborhood. Why Aren’t More Asians Accepted by Top Colleges?

 By Robert LeVine

For years, I’ve been hearing about apparent prejudice in the admissions process by the Ivy League and other highly-selective colleges. Recently, we have seen an increase in these stories of unfairness towards Asians, including lawsuits and complaints to the U.S. government. Having served with Harvard admissions for three decades, I’ve seen how private colleges evaluate applicants. Here is what most people don’t understand: high test scores and grades are not the sole determinant for admission to American private universities. To appreciate why high-scoring students do not prevail in the American system, you must first understand the American mentality. Americans see themselves as world leaders, contributing not only to their own country, but also influencing other societies around the globe. The U.S. mentality is one in which individuals are expected to contribute to communities. American high school students are pushed to serve hundreds of hours in community service, both domestically and through international missions. American universities are built upon this idea of community. Here, college is more than just classes and coursework. From the American perspective, the student body itself – the students, and the structures that bring the students together – is as important as academics. We believe that students teach each other through their interactions, and that a variety of shared experiences and perspectives is an invaluable part of the college education. As a result, American universities are looking not only for academicians, but also for students who will contribute to the school in diverse ways. “Diversity” in admissions means more than ethnicity or national origin. Diversity means the ability to provide something different to a campus community. For example, a student who was born and raised in China can contribute different experiences and perspectives than can a ChineseAmerican student who was born and raised in Florida. Qualified students who contribute athletically are valued as much as those who contribute only academically. Leadership and one’s social role in the community are critically important to highly-selective colleges. Generally, our private colleges (as opposed to most public universities) use more than SAT and ACT scores to select applicants. Rather, the best schools in America use a “holistic” system to evaluate candidates. What is the holistic system? It is an evaluation method in which applicants are given numerical grades in several areas, after which the several grades are combined into overall grades. Then, further factors – most notably the unique aspects of each student – are used to create a diverse class complete with a wide variety of contributors.

solely on their academic performance, most applicants cannot rely merely upon test scores. In many cases, the most important admissions determinant is the human scale. Why? It is difficult to provide the quantity and quality of data necessary to score well in an area that is entirely subjective. Although admissions essays can give some insight into an applicant’s personality, all applicants’ essays are biased. Instead of focusing solely on grades, tests and a student’s own words, applicants must remember that teacher recommendations are critical components of the admissions evaluation. Teachers can give unbiased insight into an applicant’s human qualities. Duke University grades teacher recommendations separately, and George Washington University starts its evaluation process by first reviewing what teachers write about a student. In addition, because admissions interviews commonly occur after the “first read” grading has been conducted, they can raise an applicant above the pool of qualified “finalists.” It’s not all about test scores. No matter how perfect a square peg may be, the American holistic admissions system uses round holes in picking students. Robert LeVine is President of Selective College Consulting and can be reached at 813-391-3760, by e-mail at BobLeVine@SelectiveCC.com, or through www.SelectiveCollegeConsulting.com

Basically, highly-selective colleges evaluate not only mental ability, but also non-academic ability and human attributes. Harvard grades applicants in three areas: academics, activities, and “personal qualities.” Dartmouth uses an almost identical group of three factors, evaluating intellectual engagement and curiosity, commitment and motivation in activities, and character. Students who are strong in only one area are considered “angular” or “well-lopsided,” and they often do not achieve great results in the holistic system. Grades, test scores, research, academic competition, and publications only apply to the academic admissions attribute. Without strength in the activities and human scales, smart students do not fare well in the admissions process. Although some applicants do gain admission based

Celebrate the Duanwu Festival in Central Florida Every summer, Chinese people celebrate the Duanwu Festival 端午節 (Duānwǔ Jié), honoring traditions and legends that are now over 2000 years old. It’s an official public holiday scheduled on the fifth day of the fifth month in the lunar calendar, and you might hear it called the “Double Fifth Festival.” As its timing is based on the lunar calendar, the date for the festival on the Gregorian calendar that Americans use isn’t al-

ways the same. This year, the double fifth fell on June 20. Here in Orlando, the dragon boat team “C.H.A.R.G.E.” hosted a workshop in the spirit of the Duanwu Festival at the Orlando Rowing Club (ORC) on the sunny and steaming Saturday, June 27.

Sponsored by the Chinese American Association of Central Florida, C.H.A.R.G.E. shared the cultural event with the local community, offering

workshop attendants a taste of both dragon boat racing and delicious bamboo leaf wrapped sticky rice dumplings called zongzi 粽子(zòngzi), which are traditional components of any Duanwu Festival. How did these become a part of the holiday? As the most popular legend goes, the poet Qu Yuan, loyal to the Chu State during the Warring States period and very passionate about fighting the powerful State of Qin, flung himself desper-

ately into the Miluo river on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month when the State of Qin captured the capital of the Chu State. Upon hearing of Qu Yuan’s suicide, people who admired him paddled out onto the river to find his body. With the hope of preventing hungry fish from eating Qu Yuan’s body, those paddlers tossed balls of rice into the water. Rumor has it that an apparition of the poet returned to his friends to report that all the rice actually sated a huge river dragon. Since then, people continue to hold dragon boat races and consume tightly wrapped sticky rice dumplings

every year on Qu Yuan’s death anniversary. For their experience of dragon boating during the workshop, four teams of 20 people took a crash course on paddling from C.H.A.R.G.E.’s coaches and then scrimmaged against each other in a mini tournament to be the fastest on Lake Fairview. In attendance were the local youth team REACH, students from University of Central Florida, and a group each from the Florida College of Integrative Medicine, Bohemia Interactive Simulations and AT&T. Seated two people per row in the 40-foot long and colorful dragon boats, the
