Chuan Lu Garden turns up the heat

with real spicy Sichuan cuisine – Mills 50  By Ricky Ly - http://tastychomps.com

Authentic Chinese cuisine in Orlando (not counting all the “American Chinese” take out spots out there) has long been dominated by Cantonese style Chinese restaurants (most popular for their dim sum and seafood dishes). Chinese Sichuan (often spelled Szechuan in North America) cuisine has taken a foothold this year in Orlando with the arrival of Chuan Lu Garden. Originating from Sichuan province in southwestern China (whose capital Chengdu was named a “city of gastronomy” by UNESCO in for its thousands of years of culinary innovation), Sichuan

Gan Gou Liang Yiang, an authentic Sichuan beef and chicken dish stir-fried in a dry pot Fei Teng Yu Xiang – Fish Fillets with bean sprouts and tofu in a special spicy sauce – a nice slow burn Sliced Roast Beef, Stomach, and Tendon with chili sauce

cuisine is known for its sophisticated use of spicy Sichuan peppercorns, chili peppers, garlic, ginger, and peanuts. To be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of Sichuan peppercorns - maybe I am a little afraid of them. They’re little prickly bombs of spice and numbing flavors.

Cumin Lamb, a very tender lamb dish with onions and dried chillies

It is definitely an experience for the adventurous though, and it may even grow on you after a while. The spice is a member of the citrus family and there is a little acidity that you can taste when crunching on the peppercorn. At first, there is a fragrant, flowery taste, and then slowly a spicy, tingly, metallic numbness (a flavor called “ma-la” in Chinese) starts at the area of impact on your tongue. The Sichuan peppercorn is prominent in Sichuan cuisine, and can be found in several of the dishes served at the new Chuan Lu Garden.

Our dinner party started with an appetizer: CA13 – Sliced Roast Beef, Stomach, and Tendon with chili sauce and topped with scallions, cilantro, and garlic. Served slightly chilled, the cuts of tendon and beef were fun to eat, with a nice simmering spice level not too hot to be overwhelming. There was almost an addicting flavor to it, with our dining companions continuing to pick at the dish despite their own spiciness tolerance levels. The next dish ordered is said to be the most popular here at Chuan Lu Garden the CS16: Fei Teng Yu Xiang – Fish Fillets with bean sprouts and tofu in a special spicy sauce consisting of dried red chillies and Sichuan peppercorns. This dish was beautiful to look at with contrasting reds from the chilies, greens from scallions, and the white flesh of the fish fillets and tofu slices, and tasted very fresh and authentic with a nice level of spiciness to it. The sichuan peppercorn…like I said, kind of grows on you…especially when you accidentally eat some hidden ones folded in the layers of fish. Our waitress, who was very kind and accommodating despite language barriers, suggested to us the Gan Gou Liang Yiang, an authentic Sichuan beef and chicken dish stir-fried in a dry pot, made with veggies, dried chilies, garlic, and ginger. The beef and chicken were very tender and was good and slightly spicy, but not too spicy. It tasted like a dish that would be eaten with a family at home with bowls of rice and soup. Overall, the dishes tried were some of the best Chinese style dishes I’ve had in Orlando and would definitely warrant a return trip to try their other dishes, like the ChongQing La Zi spicy fried chicken.

The 2013 Chinese Teacher Summer Workshop came to a successful conclusion on Sunday, June 8, 2013. At the final award ceremony, the president of The Association of Chinese Schools in Florida, Shiow Hwang, presented gifts and a certificate of appreciation to the workshop keynote speaker, Henny Chen, for her willingness and effort to travel all the way from California to Orlando, Florida, to conduct such an informative and invigorating workshop. She also presented a certificate of appreciation to Director Lee, the representative from TECO, for his support and assistance to TACS-FL. Meanwhile, many un-

Over 200 BLIA YAD members around the world attended this year’s Executive Conference in Paris, France. Fo Guang Shan France is the biggest temple in Europe. It took 8 years to fund the construction of the Temple and 2 years for construction.

BLIA YAD Orlando travel to Paris for an Executive Conference

 By Jeremy Yeh & Yee Lui

It’s a new month already, and summer is already coming to a surprising yet fulfilling end. Just last month, four BLIA YAD (Buddha’s Light International Association, Young Adult Division) executive members attended the 2013 International Buddha’s Light Young Adult Executive Conference in Paris, France. The conference was on July 16, 2013 to July 20, 2013 and during those five days, BLIA YAD Orlando met different young adults from countries across the globe including New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, Canada, Portugal, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Taiwan and many others. Over 200 YAD members who participated in the Executive Conference learned how to be better leaders not

just in our own YAD sub-divisions, but better people in general. “This conference benefitted us in every way possible and let us realize what BLIA YAD can do around the world.” said, Jeremy Yeh, Vice President of BLIA YAD Orlando. The theme of the Executive Conference was Peace and Happiness. The main speech about the theme was given by Venerable Tzu Jung of Taiwan. He talked about the Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s speech about Peace and Happiness. In his speech, Venerable Master Hsing Yun offered four suggestions in finding peace and happiness: 1. Happiness and peace come from detachment and contentment. 2. Happiness and peace come from compassion and tolerance. 3. Happiness and peace come from letting go and picking up with perfect ease. 4. Happiness and peace come from altruism and selflessness. Other

conference

activities included teamwork activities, morning exercise, morning and night chanting, youth forum, group discussions and opportunities for different YAD sub-divisions to showcase and share their activities. “I was amazed at how quickly we all connected even though we were from different parts of the world. I learned so much from this conference and was able to bring back ideas for our own YAD sub-division to prosper.” said Yee Lui, an Executive Board Member of BLIA YAD Orlando. During the conference, the Paris YAD sub-division planned a tour to see the famous landmarks of Paris including the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe. BLIA YAD Orlando accomplished so much already, but there are so many new heights to be discovered. In August, ten YAD members will be attending the 2013 North American Regional Conference in Toronto, Canada and we hope to learn even more with other YAD sub-divisions in North America. Lastly, from all the YAD members of Orlando, we would like to thank Guang Ming Temple, all the BLIA members and especially Venerable Chueh Fan and Venerable Chueh Yen for supporting YAD’s endeavors and always providing opportunities to learn and experience new things.

YAD members from the United States took a group picture with two Venerables with the famous Eiffel Tower in the background at the Buddha’s Light Young Adult Executive Conference.

The Asian Pacific American Bar Association of South Florida (APABA) — Miami-Dade County Legal Aid Pro Bono Award The Asian Pacific American Bar Association of South Florida (APABA) was formed in 2003 over concerns that there was a lack of an organization dedicated to serving the interests of the Asian Pacific American legal community. Since its humble beginnings, APABA has grown steadily every year and now boosts an increasing membership of highly talented lawyers, jurists and affiliated law students. APABA is a non-profit organization whose goals and objectives include combating discrimination against all minorities, promoting diversity in the legal profession and professional development for young attorneys. In 2013, APABA received the Miami-Dade County Legal Aid Pro Bono Award for Outstanding Bar Association. APABA donated proceeds from its successful 2012 holiday dinner/fundraiser as well as volunteered at the Legal Aid Clinic in Miami, FL. “While our efforts for Legal Aid was solely to assist organizations, without looking for public recognition, that provided legal assistance to low income individuals, we were honored to be recognized for our work.” President Stella Chu accepted the Outstanding Bar Association Award

at the luncheon ceremony before 300 lawyers and judges. In 2012, APABA organized a professional development workshop for minority law students where experienced attorneys reviewed student resumes, conducted mock interviews, and net working with established attorneys and judges to help prepare them to face the challenging legal job market. As a result of the tremendous

success and positive comments from the participants, APABA is organizing another such event in the fall of 2013. Also in 2012, APABA hosted its signature “Meet the Candidates” event, dedicated to increasing the Asian-American community’s interaction with candidates for political and judicial office. The event was a resounding success. Visit http://apabasfla.org

There are hotels, shopping stores and resthat use local food.

Mount Aso Ropeway Mt. Aso is one of the most famous active volcanoes in Japan. This rope-way will carry passengers 108 meters to the crater’s edge in just about four minutes. From this vantage point, you will be able to witness the living planet and magnificent caldera before your very eyes.

Kumamoto Castle Park

This place is the best scenic point in the Yaba Kei area. It’s also called Hitome Hakkei (one eye eight scenes).

Kumamoto Castel is one of the top three castles in Japan (along with Himeji Castle and Matsumoto Castle). It was built in 1607 for Lord Kiyomasa Kato. During the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877, the castle keep as well as other parts were burned down. The thirteen structures we can see today were the only ones to survive and are considered an important part of Japanese history. In 1960, the castle keep was rebuilt using concrete. By the end of 2008, the castle complex had been restored. One of highlights is the castle’s stone walls, which have a distinctive slope that is called Musha Kaeshi (Samurai return). Both the big and the small castle towers, along with the longest walls in Japan will make quite an impression.

There are eight unique shaped rocks here, each of which were given a name. Beautiful autumn leaves are often seen spread across the mountain.

Sumo Tournament in Kyushu One of the biggest sumo competitions of the year in Kyushu. Enjoy watching one of Japan’s most famous sports!

Takachiho Gorge There is a myth that this gorge was enriched by the water from heaven. The sharp cliff was created from the lava of Mt. Aso’s volcanic eruption, and it has been eroding for several million years.

Mr. Huang gave up his successful business to follow Dharma Master Cheng Yen’s footstep. During his Tzu Chi path, he learnt to be grateful at all times. He urged members not to wait or find excuses for not acting immediately to help others as you would never know what would happen next. Two Award-Winning Documentaries on PBS Ping Pong

THE WORLD BEFORE HER

By Hugh Hartford and Anson Hartford PBS Premiere: September 9, 2013

By Nisha Pahuja PBS Premiere: September 16, 2013

Call this old age, extreme edition: Eight players with 703 years between them compete in the Over 80 World Table Tennis Championships in China’s Inner Mongolia. British players Terry, 81, who has been given a week to live, and Les, 91, a weightlifter and poet, are going for the gold. Inge, 89, from Germany, has used table tennis to paddle her way out of dementia. And Texan Lisa, 85, is playing for the first time. Ping Pong is a wonderfully unusual story of hope, regret, friendship, ambition, love — and sheer human tenacity in the face of aging and mortality.

The World Before Her is a tale of two Indias. In one, Ruhi Singh is a small-town girl competing in Bombay to win the Miss India pageant—a ticket to stardom in a country wild about beauty contests. In the other India, Prachi Trivedi is the young, militant leader of a fundamentalist Hindu camp for girls, where she preaches violent resistance to Western culture, Christianity and Islam. Moving between these divergent realities, the film creates a lively, provocative portrait of the world’s largest democracy at a critical transitional moment—and of two women who hope to shape its future. Winner, World Documentary Competition Award, 2012 Tribeca Film Festival. A co-presentation with the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM).  Source: www.pbs.org/pov
