BARNARDO’S LAUNCHES SUPPORT FOR PARENTS AND CARERS OF YOUNG CHILDREN WITH RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS THIS WINTER

Front page story cont’d... The Boloh helpline will support families with young children at higher risk of developing respiratory infections. The culturally sensitive helpline will offer support in various languages such as Hindi, Urdu, Panjabi, Arabic, Gujarati, Amharic, Albanian and more. Public Health England is expecting an increase in respiratory infections among young children this autumn and winter, particularly respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This is because some children have not been exposed to some of these viruses before due to the coronavirus pandemic restrictions. A&E departments have seen a sharp increase in children under five presenting with respiratory infections. Many of these children are mostly well, but with a mild fever. Barnardo’s Boloh helpline and webchat service will help families understand how best to manage coughs, colds, flu, respiratory (chest) infections and signpost to other services for support. The service can also support conversations with NHS111 where translation or moral support would help someone have a conversation with clinicians. As temperatures get colder and the common cold is lingering, it is possible for children to feel poorly and develop a cough or breathing difficulties. This can be very worrying for parents with their first baby and those who care for young children. Boloh provides free confiden-

tial non-medical advice, offered in multiple languages to support people caring for children suffering from respiratory infections from Black, Asian and other minority ethnic communities who also

experience significant health challenges or who live in deprived areas. Rukshana Kapasi, Director of Health at Barnardo’s, says, “Our Boloh helpline has done a fantastic job in supporting

Black, Asian and other minority ethnic families who are struggling throughout the pandemic, in a wide variety of different languages. We’re thrilled to have expanded that support and our advisors

are now able to help parents and carers understand how to manage coughs, colds and flu in babies and young children at home to help to keep A&E departments free for people who need them in an emergency. We can also provide interpreting and moral support during conversations with NHS111 where needed and provide information on how to access a range of other services.” Barnardo’s Boloh helpline is a bespoke service launched in 2020 with funding from the National Emergencies Trust to support Black, Asian and minority ethnic children, young people and their families, and is one of a range of inclusive services offered by Barnardo’s. The helpline was initially made available for families and young people to access if they were struggling because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Now with funding from the Voluntary Community and Social Enterprise Health and Wellbeing Fund, the Boloh Helpline is leading on this public health campaign. The service will continue to provide therapeutic support, and a live webchat facility, as a lifeline to communities dealing with issues such as isolation, stress, sickness and bereavement on top of existing challenges such as poverty, overcrowded housing and physical and mental health problems.

BIRMINGHAM GETS FUNDING BOOST FOR COMMUNITY INITIATIVES IN GOVERNMENT PILOT SCHEME Birmingham City Council is one of 13 local authorities to receive a funding boost from a £5m Government funding pot to help councils tackle issues affecting their communities, announced this week. Birmingham has been chosen as a pilot place for the Partnerships for People and Place programme, run by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. Each project will receive between £150,000 and £350,000 over a two-year period from the HM Treasury’s Shared Outcomes Fund. This funding will help to strengthen the council’s partnership working across the city to link local young people to job opportunities and to help businesses to fill their vacancies. This project will focus on tackling our long-term youth unemployment challenge exacerbated by Covid-19, which is a priority for Birmingham City Council and key to the city’s economic and community recovery.

Cllr Ian Ward, Leader of Birmingham City Council, said:

I am pleased that Birmingham City Council has been chosen as a pilot place for the Partnerships for People and Place programme, run by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. We welcome this funding, which will help to strengthen the council’s partnership working across the city to link local young people to job opportunities and to help businesses to fill their vacancies. This is an important step towards joined up working with our partners to tackle youth unemployment in our city.

It will help the council stimulate demand from employers for local workers, through linking employment support to specific business and job opportunities, capitalising on planned and existing investment, jobs creation, and recruitment demand including:

As the youngest city in Europe, almost 40 per cent of Birmingham’s population aged under 25, urgent work needs to be done to prevent a ‘crisis cohort’ of young people facing long-term damage to their careers and lives. Birmingham’s project will focus on better joining up and efficiency of the existing programmes into a locally designed scheme of employment support where we will channel resource to link local young people to job opportunities, whilst also designing in new elements which will enable more young people to access jobs.

Touchwood’s Grotto has proved a staple of the Christmas calendar for nearly two decades offering the opportunity for children to enjoy an exclusive one-to-one meet and greet with the big man himself, receive a complimentary gift and even get a photo to capture that very special memory. For the first time this year, guests will also be able to experience Santa’s Post Train. Children will be warmly welcomed by one of Santa’s elves into a magical Christmasthemed carriage where they will be able to write that all-important letter to Santa and post it direct to the North Pole. Both attractions will be open every day from 20th November until the 24th December, with tickets now available to book online. CONSULTATION ON CITY CENTRE ORDER LAUNCHED

COP26 is underway, and as the conference officially opened, the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) joined Islamic Relief Worldwide and religious leaders from a range of faiths and traditions gathered in Glasgow to express shared, urgent calls for climate justice. Convening at Garnethill Synagogue on Sunday, religious leaders from no less than 10 different religions gathered for an interfaith service and Talanoa dialogue session to share experiences and discern ways forward as faith communities look to support the continued efforts for mitigation of the global climate crisis. More than 200 people attended the event – either onsite and online – which was intentionally modelled as an effort to ensure voices from all over the globe, and not just those able to physically be in Glasgow, can be heard. Through the Talanoa methodology, the event provided space for discerning key advocacy messages for the two weeks ahead, as various religious groups will seek to push climate negotiators for action. Deep justice issues are at play as the world grapples with the impact of the climate crisis, as the poorest and most marginalized people around the world continue to bear the brunt of the effects of climate change, while they are at the same time the ones least responsible for causing that same crisis. At the same time, with the recent release of major data assembled by the IPCC ahead of the climate negotiations in Glasgow, the world is currently on what UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres has described as ‘a catastrophic path’ of global warming not projected to stay near the Paris accord’s target of keeping global warming to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The science is clear: to stand a chance

at achieving the 1.5-degree target, the world needs to halve emissions over the next decade and reach netzero carbon emissions by the middle of the century. Even at a 1.5-degree increase, global warming will have severe effects on ecosystems, human health and well-being across the board, but if urgent action is not taken, it is projected that the world will instead be facing an increase in temperature of as much as 3.2 degrees, with disastrous consequences to follow. So the importance of mobilizing people across all faiths and no faith, across all sectors of civil society to push governments to take action urgently can hardly be overestimated. COP26 is understood as the most important COP meeting in a long time. It takes place after the conclusion of the first five-year cycle outlined in the Paris accord from 2015, meaning it is the first time nations submit progress reports on the so-called nationally determined contributions (NDCs) they have committed to, and more importantly to up ambitions for the next cycle ahead. Nora Antonsen from the Church of Norway is one of 32 youth delegates representing the LWF at COP26. She observed the power in standing united across multiple faiths in addressing climate change, and speaking up for climate justice. “When I see that people of different faiths – who often in media are portrayed as people who do not understand each other well because of their religious differences – stand together like this it gives me a new hope for the world,” Antonsen reflected. “We all care for our brothers and sisters, and climate justice is a really big part of that. And that gives me hope and motivation for the future, that actually people of faith can be a motor and accelerator in the work we do for climate justice both at international,

national and local levels,” she stated. For Rev. Mari Valjakka and indigenous Sami pastor from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland – an LWF member church – spoke about relations to the native lands of the indigenous peoples around the world, and how this relationship is crucial to the way we take action on the climate. “Our homeland is not wasteland waiting to be exploited,” she said. As indigenous peoples we believe we have the wisdom of how to live at peace with our planet. Please, let us share this wisdom,” she urged. Shahin Ashraf, head of global advocacy for Islamic Relief Worldwide, continued to stress the urgency of the current situation. “The challenges we face will be many, but I tell you brothers and sisters, the opportunities will be equally as many,” she reflected. On the question of what we want from COP, the answer is we want the money, we want the plan, we want the economy, we want distribution and we want justice, she said. And the voices of faith communities have been expressed clearly in Glasgow from the outset. Earlier on the Sunday, an interfaith vigil convened hundreds of religious leaders at George Square in central Glasgow, where a joint statement was shared urging governments to put the Paris agreement into action, and join in ‘collective prayer with all those who are working for a successful COP26.’ Bishop Mark Strange from the Episcopal Church in Scotland, who joined both the vigil and the interfaith panel at Garnethill reflected: “We are all here to be activists and to push the point, but this all also affects us. I want you all to reflect on how this all affects you. It does matter, what you do.”

Birmingham City Council is asking people who live or work in or visit Birmingham to share their views on plans to introduce measures to tackle anti-social behaviour in the city centre. The council is looking to implement a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) to prevent certain anti-social behaviours within the city centre – covering an area from Five Ways and Ladywood across to Digbeth, including the Jewellery Quarter, Chinese Quarter, Snow Hill and Lee Bank areas. A six-week consultation, launched on 5th November 2021 will involve an online questionnaire, surveys and a series of pop-up engagement sessions to be held in key city locations during this period, details of which will be announced soon. PSPOs were introduced under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 to provide police forces and local authorities with additional powers in a defined area to tackle a wide range of anti-social behaviours. In the city centre, this would be introduced to address groups gathering, anti-social behaviours (such as urinating / defecating in public, graffiti and verbal abuse) and antisocial street drinking. Any person found to be in breach of the proposed order would be referred to the appropriate service(s) such as substance misuse or mental health / wellbeing services. To have your say visit the Bir-

Cllr John Cotton, Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion, Community Safety and Equalities, at Birmingham City Council said:

Our city is a fantastic place to live in, work in and visit, and I want Birmingham to be a place where people feel safe as they walk around the city centre, enjoying all that it offers, day and night. Now more than ever there is a real onus to ensure public safety is a priority. However, I am also aware there may be vulnerable people in the city centre, so this is also about ensuring we get help to those who are struggling, by signposting them to suitable support services to tackle some of these behaviours. Our approach is always to offer help to individuals first.

10 YEAR OLD FROM BOLTON CLIMBS BEN NEVIS FOR CHARITY! 10 year old Aamira Hajee from Bolton never stops and whoever knows her will know that she’s always up for a challenge. In late August 2021 she decided to challenge herself for a worthy cause by climbing Ben Nevis, the tallest mountain in the UK to raise funds for her brothers and sisters in Palestine, Aamira raised £4468 for Penny Appeal’s Love Palestine project which supports the distribution of nutritious food parcels in Palestinian refugee camps, supports Palestinian farmers so they can cultivate and expand their olive farms, helps to create rooftop gardens that become a sustainable source of income for women and provides essential services, like medical care and clean water distribution, for the people affected by the Gaza Emergency. The young challenge champion says: “We are so fortunate to have delicious food on the table everyday and not having to worry about drinking dirty water and falling ill. All the things big and small we take for granted every minute of the day are the things the people of Palestine can only sadly dream and wish for!” Head of Challenges Haroon Mota says: “We are ever so proud of Aamira who is helping so many people by raising nearly £4500 for our Emergency Response campaign, she is absolutely amazing and we hope that Aamira will join us on many other challenges!” Anyone wishing to donate to Aamira’s challenge appeal can do so on https://pennyappeal.enthuse.com/ pf/aamira-hajee

WOLVERHAMPTON MEAL DEAL METRO BANKERS TURN CHEF TO COOK FOR THE HOMELESS

The UK’s community bank, Metro Bank, gives every colleague a Day to Amaze – essentially a paid day off to support a local charity or good cause. Colleagues from Metro Bank’s Wolverhampton store decided to use their Day to Amaze by volunteering for Central Gurdwara (Khalsa Jatha) where they helped prepare two hundred meals for homeless people. Sikhs believe that giving to the hungry and needy is like serving God. The Sikh religion emphasis on giving is seen in the institution of ‘Langar’ (Free Kitchen). Food which is given to all, regardless of caste, colour, creed, age, gender or social status. Metro Bank colleagues who helped

prepare the meals were Amanjot Singh, Manraj Singh, Justice Nikoi, Jesse Hameed and Pravini Thavabalan. “As a community bank you can always count on us for support,” explains Amanjot Singh, Metro Bank local business manager. “It was very rewarding to be able to participate in this traditional Sikh act of giving which helped feed local refugees and homeless people. If this meal put a smile on someone’s face, then our work here was done.” Metro Bank’s Wolverhampton store is located at 6-7 Dudley St, Wolverhampton WV1 3EY. The store is currently open Monday – Saturday 08:30am – 6pm. Sunday: 11am – 5pm.

COVENTRY TEENAGER LEFT WITH SEVERE SPEECH AND MOBILITY PROBLEMS AFTER SUFFERING STROKE WHEN BRAIN ARTERY TORN DURING SURGERY AT BIRMINGHAM’S QUEEN ELIZABETH HOSPITAL A family is calling for lessons to be learned after their son suffered a stroke when an artery in his brain was torn during surgery at a Birmingham hospital. Arundeep Marva was undergoing surgery for a cancerous brain tumour at Queen Elizabeth Hospital when one of the main arteries in his brain was torn. The surgery was abandoned. The then 18-year-old was left with severe speech difficulties and weakness down the right side of his body. He was unable to walk unaided and had no speech during his initial recovery. Following the incident Arun’s parents, dad, Ravinder, 52, and mum, Rupinderjit, 49, instructed expert medical negligence lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to investigate their son’s care and help him access the specialist rehabilitation and therapies he requires. University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), which runs the

Queen Elizabeth, admitted liability for Arun’s injuries which happened in September 2018. Arun, now aged 21 of Walsgraveon-Sow, Coventry, has been attending neuro-rehabilitation, speech therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy sessions. He is able to walk unaided indoors but still suffers from ongoing weakness down the right side of his body. Arun has right foot

drop and limited functional movement in his right arm and his right dominant hand. He has difficulties with understanding and expressing language, particularly finding the correct words. His family and their legal team are now calling for lessons to be learned to improve patient safety at the Trust. Last month the Care Quality Commission told UHB it required improvement amid concerns over patient safety. Irwin Mitchell also represents other families whose loved ones have suffered a stroke after blood vessels in their brain were damaged during surgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. They include one case where a woman suffered a stroke after a blood vessel was damaged during surgery in October 2018. Laura Ellacott, the expert medical negligence lawyer at Irwin Mitchell representing Arun, said: “The injuries Arun

suffered as a result of what happened to him during surgery have had a profound impact on his life, especially at an age when many of his friends were going off to study at university or starting their careers. “While Arun’s recovery has been supported by early access to rehabilitation, Arun still faces many challenges to try and overcome his injuries the best he can. “Sadly what happened to Arun isn’t an isolated incident at the Trust. While the incidents we’re investigating are from before the recent Care Quality Commission inspection, these cases and the CQC’s findings will be of great concern to many people. “While we welcome the Trust’s swift admission in Arun’s case, we call on the Trust to ensure it learns lessons not only from what happened to Arun but others to make sure patient safety is improved.” Arun, was studying for his A Levels at Cauldon College when he suffered a seizure playing football in 2018. Arun had received offers to study aerospace engineering at the University of Birmingham and Coventry University.

Following tests doctors confirmed he had a brain tumour and he required surgery to take a biopsy and remove as much of the tumour as possible. Arun underwent the biopsy surgery on 3 September 2018 during which the artery was torn leading to a stroke. Four days later he underwent further surgery. Arun remained at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital until early October 2018 when he was discharged to the Central England Rehabilitation Unit. Arun was finally discharged home in late November 2018. He also underwent 12 months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Ravinder said: “Arun was an ordinary teenager before all of this happened. He used to enjoy meeting his friends, playing football and was studying to go to university. “However, all that changed following his stroke. He was in a really bad way afterwards and suddenly lost his growing independence. “While he watched his friends go off to university or start their jobs, for him life revolved around medical appointments and learning to walk unaided again.

“Three years on he’s still a long way from being the person he was. He continues to struggle with his speech and has difficulty finding the right words. Arun’s ongoing weakness in the right side of his body meaning he struggles with day to day tasks. “The last few years and seeing how life has turned out so differently for Arun has been difficult to accept. As a parent all you want is what’s best for your child. “Despite his many challenges we couldn’t be prouder of Arun and the courage and determination he shows. We know it won’t be easy but he’s determined to make the best recovery he can. “However, it’s also important that lessons are learned from what happened to Arun. Our family wouldn’t want others to go through what he has.” Last month the Care Quality Commission told UHB it required improvement amid concerns over patient safety. It followed visits to Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield in June.

CYGNET SEDGLEY HOUSE AND LODGE WINS A NATIONAL SERVICE USER AWARD

Cygnet Sedgley House and Lodge has won a national award for their work to keep therapeutic services running during the pandemic.

Staff and patients at the inpatient rehabilitation service for men with complex needs, in Woodcross Street, Wolverhampton, were singled out for an initiative developed during the recent lockdowns to involve service users in vital roles within the hospital. These included supporting PPE Audits and CPR drills when the pandemic disrupted vocational community-based activities. Cygnet Sedgley House and Lodge took home the “Mark Britton Service User Choice Award” at this year’s National Service User Awards, sponsored by Cygnet Health Care. The awards are designed to recognise and celebrate the achievements of service users in mental health and learning disability services across the country. Loretta Martin, Hospital Manager at Cygnet Sedgley House said: “Co-production is so important here at Sedgley as it empowers the service users to develop independence and build con-

fidence. During the pandemic we had to be creative to keep our service users busy as their schedules were already affected enough by the lockdown. The programmes helped with this and gave them something to occupy them, but it really helped us work together as a team.” After the award, a service user at Cygnet Sedgley House said: “Doing the audit everyday made me feel safer from the virus and that we were all working together to stop the virus

spreading.” Mark Britton had been involved with the National Service User Awards in previous years and the ‘Service User Choice Award’ was set up to commemorate his life and recognise his contribution to the awards before he sadly passed away in July 2019 at the age of 51. Mark suffered mental health challenges himself and championed both the awards and the voice of service users. He played a crucial part in many co-produced initiatives both within

and outside of Cygnet Health Care for many years. He dedicated his career to representing inpatient services, contributing to the East Midlands new models of care provider collaborative and PHE strategic planning where he could use his voice to promote service improvements. He mentored many other service users in their journey to become experts by experience and in his role as Service User Mentor he was involved in inducting the new staff on his ward.

Ian Callaghan, the head judge for the Service User Choice category and Recovery and Secure Care Manager at Rethink Mental Illness, lauded the project. He said: “The things people have been able to do during this difficult time, using it as a catalyst for collaborating service users and staff on something so important – keeping each other, and everyone, safe is a brilliant example of people turning difficult times into something that brought people together.” Finalists at the awards included teams from Inmind Healthcare, Priory Healthcare, Rampton Hospital, Nottingham Healthcare NHS Trust, Chase Farm Hospital, at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, Vaigate, at the NAViGO Health and Social CIC, Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust, Ludlow Street Healthcare and the Yorkshire and Humber Involvement Network, as well as Cygnet Health Care. Cygnet Sedgley House and Cygnet Sedgley Lodge offer a 34-bed high dependency inpatient rehabilitation service for men with complex needs. The service is designed to provide an environment that promotes mental health recovery by focusing on space, personal privacy and dignity. It is rated Good by the Care Quality Commission.

DUOLINGO REVEALS HINDI IS THE SECOND FASTEST GROWING LANGUAGE IN THE UK Colin Watkins, Duolingo UK Country Manager said:

We’re pleased to see the continuing uptake of Hindi on the app with so many people choosing to learn the language in the UK. Hindi is one of the most unique languages we offer at Duolingo - many words are written as they are pronounced because each character has a different sound. This makes it one of the easier languages to learn. It also holds many similarities with English, as some Hindi words are read and pronounced as they are in English, but are written in Hindi. INDIAN MUSLIMS FACE ABUSE OVER PAKISTAN’S HISTORIC WIN AGAINST INDIA

In South Asian neighbouring states, ties have been cold, and cricket matches tend to exacerbate these tensions. India has been facing criticism over losing its calm after a defeat in cricket match against Pakistan. Critics pointed that India, like always in such situations, looked for a scapegoat. Indian only Muslim Cricketer, Muhammad Shami was atrociously dragged and ill treated on different social media platform by extremist ideology driven Hindus. Some accused him of intentionally helping Pakistani cricketers while other called him betrayer. Moreover, University in Agra has suspended three Kashmiri students for supposedly admiring Pakistani cricketers on WhatsApp. Arsheed Yousuf, Showkat Ahmed Ganai and Inayat Altaf Sheikh are pursuing engineering degrees in Raja Balwant Singh College in Agra. Their only crime was that they supported and praised Pakistan’s performance in T20 world cup match between India and Pakistan. According to Police, they were caught on Wednesday after a complaint was filed against them by ruling BJP

party. Furthermore, the police said that these people are agitating and creating tensions, which may disturb the security and peace of country. Many other Muslims in India are in serious trouble after the historic win of Pakistan against India since Sunday. A school teacher in Rajasthan had to quit his job, following his arrest by Indian Police over celebrating Pakistan’s victory and posting it on WhatsApp. According to reports by local Media in Northern Punjab, many Kashmiri students have been abused and attacked for supporting Pakistan in the cricket match. The police in Indian-controlled Kashmir accused some students and staff of the two medical schools of chanting pro-Pakistan slogans during the competition under the strict antiterrorism law. According to the Associated Press, after the match, many Kashmiris rushed to the streets to celebrate. They chanted “Long live Pakistan” in the Himalayas, which has carried out a decades-long armed rebellion against Delhi.

ISLAMIC RELIEF UK AND GREENPEACE BRING YOUNG MUSLIMS TOGETHER TO TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE AT COP26

slamic Relief UK and Greenpeace MENA as part of the Ummah for Earth Alliance brought together young Muslims yesterday to learn how to become activists in the fight against global warming. As the second week of COP26 in Glasgow continues, a panel of high profile speakers shared their insights into the climate crisis at Blackhall Mosque in Edinburgh to inspire the next generation of climate activists. The speakers included environmental campaigners Zunaira Malik and Nana Firman, Islamic Relief UK activist, Fatima Zara Alarakha, Nouhad Awwad from Greenpeace (Middle East and North Africa), Zahra Khan Durrani from Islamic Relief Pakistan and Sheikh Amin Buxton. For young Muslims in the UK, climate change threatens places where many of them have relatives, such as Bangladesh and Pakistan. These countries are often hit by floods and droughts, causing destroyed crops, homes, livelihoods and huge suffering. As well as concern for others overseas, many young Muslims are also worried about not being

able to perform their sacred task of Hajj (pilgrimage) to Mecca – as climate change will make it too hot and dangerous in the future. COP26 is seeing world leaders, tens of thousands of negotiators, government representatives, businesses and civil society come together for talks to tackle climate change. Islamic Relief and Greenpeace Middle East and North Africa have joined with

other major aid groups to lobby for immediate climate action, at all levels. Young Muslims are demanding tough action from decision-makers at the COP26 summit in Glasgow to reduce carbon emissions and make a greener environment. Maria Zafar, Islamic Relief UK’s Campaigns and Public Affairs Coordinator said: “It’s inspiring to see the next gen-

eration step up to the challenge of tackling climate change. Seeing these young individuals so passionate about doing everything they can to save the planet gives me hope for the future. It’s our duty as Muslims to safeguard the planet as custodians of the Earth and this message is resonating with the young. “These youngsters are also determined to make a huge difference to the countless people in countries across the world who are suffering as floods and droughts devastate people’s lives.” Nouhad Awwad, Project Campaigner on Ummah for Earth at Greenpeace Middle East and North Africa said: “We have the technology, the insight, the science and the financial means to green our whole planet and live in harmony, dignity and health. What is lacking is the political will and the courage to execute it. “We will get there by continuing to educate, inspire and lead the change from the front and by working together in unity and solidarity.”

CATHAY PACIFIC PILOTS FACING THE HEAT OF UNEMPLOYMENT By: Rida Khan (Aviation Author)

Covid 19 pandemic brought dark black clouds of storm in the career of Cathay Pacific pilots . Hong Kong based airline Cathay Pacific decided to shut down it’s various overseas pilots base. Due to the pandemic many pilots have not been flying on duties since April 2020. Cathay said in a statement, “ These pilots were offered redundancy or will get the opportunity to move to Hong Kong .” The London base is the first one to get closure following other foreign base shutdowns like Canada , Australia,

New Zealand, Germany & still reviewing North America pilot bases. The airline said , “ The decision is not one we have taken lightly and does not reflect on the professionalism of the pilots based in London.” As the non local Cathay pacific pilots thought to move in Hong Kong but unfortunately their work permit applications were knocked down by Hong Kong’s Immigration Department. Cathay Pacific declared that around 496 pilots whose jobs were dependent on securing work permits have failed to

get the necessary tick approved from Hong Kong authorities. The same circumstances have been faced by the Australia based pilots who are working for Cathay Pacific , their immigration applications are also rejected to relocate to Hong Kong. In this list there are many pilots who have worked for years in Cathay Pacific. In a statement Cathay Pacific confirmed , “ We have been informed by the Immigration Department that the work permit applications from overseas based pilots who have applied

to relocate to Hong Kong have been rejected . We are reaching out to support these officers , many of whom will have the opportunity to elect enhanced termination benefits .” One of the main reasons behind this may be the high level of unemployment existing among Hong Kong based pilots. Some argued that Hong Kong should first need to look at their own people who are out of work living in Hong Kong. Approxi. 300 pilots are out of work in Hong Kong which also include the former Cathay Pacific Dragon.

According to Alex Jackson , Chairman of Hong Kong Aircrew officers Association, “ This decision was one made by the Hong Kong government , the options for better resolution were limited and outside our control , especially in the current climate.” At last, slowly and slowly these things will be faced by all the non local pilots working for Cathay Pacific in different overseas bases. Now how the airline will deal with this situation that we have to see.

tax, finance, R&D tax relief, insurance and property. Commenting on working with ARMCO, Sunny said: “ARMCO’s approach to business truly sets them apart in the competitive world of consultancy and this innovative outlook aligns seamlessly with our own values at Silver Mountain. Working with a group of new clients at once, is a hugely exciting prospect, and we are delighted to be supporting the AMRCO Group of Companies communicate their vision and numerous successes across digital platforms. ship would allow the advisory business to deliver engaging content to their target audiences. He says: “We are thrilled to be working with Silver Mountain, who will help us grow our reach across digital and social platforms, helping raise awareness further than ever before. We were looking for a partner who could deliver work which would make ARMCO stand out from the crowd, and we were blown away by Silver Mountain’s track record and results. We have no doubt that the support of Silver Mountain will help us make a bigger impact through new digital channels.” The agency secured the work having impressed with its digital and creative services for Innovation 4 Business, one of the ARMCO companies. Phil Moore, Managing Director, Innovation 4 Business

across the board have seen an accelerated need for digital marketing content. With client-facing sectors having to use new routes to connect with customers, many have turned to digital agencies like ours to unlock the potential there. “We are so proud to have been able to help so many businesses to navigate this difficult time and step into this new recovery phase. The next 12 months present huge opportunities for businesses across the region, and beyond, to put their best foot forward, and we’re looking forward to being there to support them as they do.”

RENTED DRIVEWAYS CAN FURTHER BOOST NATIONAL LIVING WAGE INCREASE

With the National Minimum Wage increasing for many from £8.91 to £9.50, household incomes can be given a further boost by renting out an empty driveway. This is according to online parking portal YourParkingSpace. co.uk which lists thousands of pre-bookable empty driveways across the UK which are earning homeowners more than £1,000 per year on average in 25 towns and cities. In fact, residents stretching from Aberdeen to Belfast to Bournemouth, are already breaking the £1,000 average per year threshold with the online parking portal as drivers look for cheaper and convenient parking options. And even smaller towns still provide driveway money making opportunities such as Barns-

Harrison Woods, CEO at YourParkingSpace, said

Homeowners who have had to tighten the purse strings may find that renting out their empty driveway as a car parking space will give them the stream of income needed to withstand any financial pressures.

The team at leading digital, video and animation agency Silver Mountain, has grown to new heights, having welcomed an additional market-leading client to its books. Signing a new deal with the ARMCO group – a collection of consultancy businesses based in the Midlands – Silver Mountain’s latest client win coincides with the agency’s team expansion and decision to up-size its office in the heart of Birmingham’s business district. Silver Mountain, led by founder and CEO, Sunny Gill, has started working with ARMCO – a ‘next generation advisory business’ that consists of 11 companies – to provide video and animation support profiling its new people and services. Operating from offices in Cornwall Street, ARMCO’s businesses specialise in a range of services including corporate

tain’s ever-growing client list, which has seen the team sign with leading firms in the automotive, healthcare and BPFS (Business Professional and Financial Services) sectors in the past 12 months alone. What’s more, Silver Mountain is also celebrating expansion and a change of headquarters. The agency has relocated to Two Snowhill, taking up residency in the central Birmingham location. The office, which is based in the Colmore Business District, will provide the agency with an accessible space for clients and creatives alike to collaborate. Sunny concludes: “Over the last 19 months, industries

ley, Gloucester, Stevenage and Swindon, with locations near

train stations, sports venues and town cities proving particularly popular. And there’s further good news for savvy Brits looking to park up money worries as YourParkingSpace pre-booked rented driveways are often cheaper than pay-on-the-day car parks. Harrison added: “The Treasury’s recent minimum wage increase announcement will hopefully relieve those left with a hole in their pockets as the cost-of-living soars. “But to lessen the impact of the extra cost of living, many will also need to find shrewd ways to reduce their outgoings, and with parking being a major day-to-day expenditure in many people’s lives, cheaper parking is one way to reduce household costs.”

MOVEMBER: GP REVEALS FIVE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PROSTATE CANCER ►► One in eight UK men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime ►► Dr Rhianna McCylmont explains the main symptoms and treatment options

1.

Who’s at risk?

The prostate is an organ that only men have, and its main function is to produce the white fluid which mixes with sperm to create semen. Dr Rhianna said: “Although

2.

Caribbean descent are also more at risk from the cancer compared to men from other ethnicities.”

What can increase the risk of prostate cancer?

Dr Rhianna said: “There are various factors that can increase the risk of developing prostate cancer, including family history. The risk increases

3.

prostate cancer can affect men of any age, it’s most commonly diagnosed in older age groups, particularly over 50s. “Research has also found that men of an African, or African-

if a male member of your family developed prostate cancer before the age of 60. “Another factor which can increase the risk is obesity, with

NHS information suggesting that obesity may be linked to an increased likelihood of the development of prostate cancer.”

What are the symptoms?

Dr Rhianna said: “Unfortunately, prostate cancer can often be symptomless, which is why it’s so important to have your prostate checked regularly as you get older.” When symptoms do appear, particularly as the illness becomes more advanced, they can include: »» Increased frequency in needing to urinate »» Difficulty when starting to pee, or a weak flow »» Feeling like your bladder hasn’t fully emptied »» Feeling an urgent need to urinate

4.

How is it tested?

Dr Rhianna said: “If you notice you have any symptoms related to prostate cancer, you might be offered a PSA, or Prostate Specific Antigen test. This is taken as a blood test and can indicate the presence

5.

of prostate cancer. “Your GP will also suggest an examination of your prostate, which is undertaken through a rectal exam. “If either or both of these tests indicate the possible presence

of prostate cancer, then you will undertake an MRI scan to assess the prostate, and a biopsy will be used to officially diagnose the condition.”

What are the treatment options?

Dr Rhianna said: “Treatment of prostate cancer depends largely on the severity of the condition, and how far advanced it is, as well as other factors including whether it has spread to other areas of

your body, and your general health. “Treatment options are varied and include surgery to remove the prostate (a prostatectomy), radiotherapy, hormone therapy, or ‘watchful waiting’,

Dr Rhianna adds: “Movember has done a fantastic job of raising awareness of male-specific health conditions such as prostate cancer, and thankfully so, as it’s incredibly common, but often treatable if caught early enough. “The good news is that whilst the condition is

where the cancer is considered to be relatively minor, and poses little threat of spreading, or developing further within the patient’s lifetime, so is left untreated but closely monitored.”

common amongst men and potentially very serious, most patients diagnosed with it do survive. This is why it’s so important for men to be aware of the signs and symptoms and understand the need to be checked as they get older.”

Movember aims to raise awareness of the key health issues impacting men, helping them to identify symptoms and get diagnosed whilst their conditions are still treatable. One of the main focuses is prostate cancer, which is the most diagnosed form of cancer amongst men in the UK. One in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime . Dr Rhianna McClymont, lead GP at the digital healthcare provider, Livi, reveals some of the key facts about the disease, including the main warning signs and what to do about them.

NEW EVERY MIND MATTERS CAMPAIGN TO IMPROVE PEOPLE’S MENTAL HEALTH South Asians are urged to find “what works for me” to support their mental wellbeing as the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) launches the latest  Better Health – Every Mind Matters (EMM) campaign. The campaign empowers people to look after their mental health by directing them to free, practical tips and advice. By answering five simple questions through the Every Mind Matters platform, people can get a tailored “Mind Plan”, giving them personalised tips to help deal with stress and anxiety, boost their mood, sleep better and feel more in control. New research commissioned by OHID reveals nearly half (49%) of adults and almost two-thirds (59%) of South Asians in England said the COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on their mental wellbeing. And more than a third of all adults in England (15.1 million) said they did not know what to do to help improve their mental wellbeing. Pakistani and Bangladeshi adults reported struggling the most, with 60% saying their mental wellbeing was negatively impacted by the pandemic, closely followed by Indian adults at 57%. South Asian adults were also more likely to say they have experienced worry and anxiety, 59% of Pakistanis and Bangladeshis and 54% of Indians, compared to 45% of the general public. Encouragingly, South Asians were more likely to look for support and advice to help with their mental wellbeing than the

general public – 74% of Pakistanis and Bangladeshis, 70% of Indians compared to the general public (47%). This is the first campaign delivered by the new Office for Health Improvements and Disparities which was launched on 1 October with the aim of tackling health inequalities across the country. Minister for Care and Mental Health, Gillian Keegan, said:  “The public showed great resilience throughout the pandemic, but it has served as a stark reminder that we all need to look after ourselves not only

physically, but mentally. “There are simple steps we can all be taking to improve our mental wellbeing and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. “For anyone who is unsure what they can do, I urge you to visit Every Mind Matters and take advantage of the expert advice and practical tips available to you.”

Over 3.4 million individual Mind Plans have already been created since the campaign was first launched in October 2019.  The campaign is supported by a coalition of leading mental health charities and community organisations, including, CALM, The Mental Health Foundation, Mental Health Innovations, Taraki, The Heera Foundation and Sharing Voices. Also, a range of commercial, third-sector, NHS and Local Authority partners, who will share mental health messages with their customers, members and colleagues, including Mental Health First Aid, Carers organisations and more.  Dr. Chirag Gorasia (Clinical Psychologist), says: “The mental health of the South Asian community has been hard hit by the pandemic, but thankfully there are some simple steps we can all take to improve our mental health. Whether it’s hobbies like, going on walks, reading, gardening, or practicing mindful-

ness and yoga, there are simple, low-cost tools out there to get you through challenging times. A great first step is to answer the five quick questions to generate your Mind Plan on the Every Mind Matters site.” Pavandeep Johal, The Heera Foundation, an organisation that provides support to people with mental health issues in the community, says: “It’s very encouraging to see that South Asians are more likely to seek support and advice to help with their mental wellbeing given that we know that cultural and religious beliefs can sometimes make it challenging for some members of the community to seek help. “The reality is that with the pandemic we have all experienced some form of stress, anxiety or a low mood at some point so it’s so important that we continue to signpost people to the support available and help people find ways to manage their mental wellbeing.” Better Health – Every Mind Matters offers information and videos to help young people look after their own mental wellbeing and will be promoting them through social media channels and in schools. The Every Mind Matters website also provides dedicated support to help parents and guardians look after the mental wellbeing of the children and young people they care for.

The centre will also be supported by a number of NHS Trusts in the Midlands including – Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust; Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust; Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust; University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust; Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust; Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundations Trust and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Through 25 PhD scholarships focused on mental health (MH) and neurosciences (N), students will have the opportunity

to research a ‘theme’ representing the lifespan (children, young people and perinatal MH; common MH; severe MH; dementia; and physical health comorbidity with MH), using specific bio-psychosocial approaches.

Healthcare profession-specific mentors will ensure scholars remain connected to their primary professional groups. Scholars will leave the programme as well-rounded clinical-academics with high-levels of MH&N research acumen,

and enhanced communication and leadership skills. Professor Roshan das Nair from the School of Medicine at the University of Nottingham and the Institute of Mental Health, is Director of the Centre. He

said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this award, which is a huge achievement for our four universities and the NHS Trusts with whom we work, and is a testament to teamwork. Our Doctoral Training Programme will advance the mental health and neuroscience research we conduct here in the Midlands. “This award will enable us to share the excellent resources we have across the partner universities and NHS Trusts to develop the next generation of multidisciplinary clinical academics in mental health and neurosciences, and support their research. Our Doctoral Training Programme will create an ambitious Midlands-based, internationally connected, clinical-academic ecosystem. Through our collaborations, we hope to address the key contemporary mental health challenges our societies face.” Professor Matthew Broome, Director of the Institute for Mental Health at the University of Birmingham, said: “Our population in the Midlands suffers from significant health inequalities, with high rates of mental health challenges. This training centre is a huge opportunity to address these challenges, increase our research capacity in mental health and neuroscience, and develop a diverse group of clinical academics from a wide range of professional groups, including nursing, social work, occupational therapy, pharmacy, medicine, and psychology.”

Chef Julia Komp (Instagram A/c : juliakompcuisine ) is Germany’s youngest female Michelin – starred chef and a world traveler. Her dishes are inspired by her trips around the world , she cooked in small kitchens as well as star restaurants. At 31 years old she has already visited more than 40 countries from Morocco to Japan . At the age of 27 she achieved Michelin star chef award and last year, she became Chef of the Year, one of the highest distinctions in Germany. Q.) Your cooking is shaped by your experience as a globetrotter. What do you have to say about it? Chef Julia : On travels I have discovered dozens of great recipes by local chefs I met. I was a guest cook in fine dining restaurants such as the “Dewakan” in Malaysia and I was also cooking pho in Vietnamese street kitchens. The recipes I found are a great inspiration and foundation of the specialties in my restaurant. I love discovering spices in local markets and incorporating them into my cuisine as well. As a chef in my own restaurant “Sahila”, I take my guests on a journey to remote places around the globe. My experiences are displayed in the variety of the dishes and flavors. Q.) Share your success story of achieving the Michelin Star Chef award in Germany . Chef Julia : During a student internship in a hotel at the age of 14, I realized that I wanted to become a chef. So I did further internships, an apprenticeship and participated in many national and international competitions. Finally, I had the chance to become a chef in a known restaurant in Cologne. There I suddenly received a Michelin star at the age of only 27. An insane reward for my team and me! I think that persistence and a good team spirit are key factors. I also pay great attention to sustainable, organic ingredients of highest quality. I have met some producers personally on my trip around the globe. Q.) You want to become a policewoman then why do you change your profession ? Chef Julia : As I mentioned, I made the decision to become a chef after a school internship in a hotel. That’s where I discovered my passion for cooking. The biggest motivation was to see: With great food you can make people really happy. So instead of becoming a police-

woman, I took the path of becoming a chef. Q.) You have your own brand as “Organic Olive Oil” . Why have you chosen olive oil only as your brand product ? Chef Julia : I love culinary challenges – finding the perfect olive oil was one of them. In my kitchen, the origin and quality of ingredients play a central role. I often have close contact with the producers. But with olive oil, which is traditionally produced in southern regions, this was a greater challenge. An aromatic oil is central to my culinary creations. That’s how I traveled to Tunisia. I have known the country since my childhood. Together with my grandmother, I spent many summers there. I can even speak a little Tunisian. Luckily, I found a great oil in Eastern Tunisia which has eventually become “Kenzolie”. Q.) How do you feel becoming the youngest star chef in 2016 ? Chef Julia : It was an amazing feeling, especially, because I was not expecting it. Thus, my team threw a big party. There are not many female Michelinstarred chefs. It is a great honor to be one of them. Now I try to be a role model for young women in the gastronomy. It is not easy but you can make it. Q.) Why do you love Arabic and Asian flavors in the food ? Chef Julia : Every chef has his own style. My style is based on my world travels: I’ve been traveling mostly Asia and the Orient. Originally, I went abroad to learn how to make kimchi. But the trip turned out to be much longer than planned. What I particularly love are exotic spices. A few more spices wouldn’t hurt European cuisine. Q.) You prefer to use light colors in your dish with a touch of nature ( like flowers, butterflies etc. ). Is there any specific reason for it ? Chef Julia : I love to incorporate a feminine style into my cuisine. Because most chefs are men, I can differentiate myself that way. Besides, I find bright colors and natural shapes simply beautiful. In top cuisine, aesthetics has a high value. Q.) Which life do you enjoy the most – Life as a Chef or Life as a Traveler? Chef Julia : I love my life as a chef but I also love travelling around the world. I don’t think you have to choose between the two. Being a chef is my homebase but travels inspire me more than any-

use a lot of spices and many dishes are based on tomatoes and olive oil. One of my favorite dishes is Shakshuka. The word Shakshuka comes from Arabic and means “all mixed together”. The dish contains poached eggs and spicy tomatoes. However, spice-wise, India is my favorite. Q.) Any advice for the upcoming chefs?

Chef Julia : There are easier careers than in the restaurant industry. Long hours and a lot of physical work are part of it. But if you stay persistent and don’t let other people get in your way, you will succeed. It’s also important to stay open to new spices, techniques and tastes. Then the world is yours.

HEART RESEARCH UK HEALTHY HEART TIP, WRITTEN BY DR HELEN FLAHERTY, HEAD OF HEALTH PROMOTION AT HEART RESEARCH UK

Eating healthy lunches at home Many of us are spending more time at home due to COVID-19 and this can mean reaching for the comfort foods when we feel bored, stressed or need cheering up. On busy days, it is easy to pop to the kitchen and grab a quick lunch without thinking too much about

AW Facts Did you know? Apples give you more energy than coffee

whether it is good for you. We have some tips for planning and preparing healthier lunches at home. Include plenty of fruit and veg Fruit and vegetables are packed with nutrients and fibre to help keep your heart healthy. Find healthy salad or vegetable soup recipes online or in recipe books to include in your lunch plan. Finish off your lunches with a portion of fruit and a low-calorie yoghurt. Increase your fibre intake A diet that is high in fibre can reduce your risk of heart disease. Good sources of fibre include fruit and vegetables, beans and pulses and wholegrain foods. Try to regularly include a portion of wholegrain food in your lunches, such as brown bread, wholemeal pita, wholemeal pasta or brown rice.

Include lean sources of protein in your lunches Foods that are high in protein can help you to feel full for longer and this can prevent you from snacking on less healthy foods during the day. Lean sources of protein include grilled skinless chicken or turkey, canned tuna, soybeans, tofu and low-fat dairy products. Plan your lunches in advance Planning your lunches in advance will allow you to put a little more thought into what you are eating as well as saving you time and money. Try creating a weekly lunch plan before the start of the week and shop for ingredients in advance. Prepare your lunches the night before to save time during busy days or try cooking large quantities of home-made soups and store single portions in the freezer.

TECH BOSSES WARN OF POTENTIAL E-COMMERCE ‘BLACK FRIDAY’ AND XMAS “MELTDOWN” FOR HIGH STREET AND ONLINE RETAILERS Stephen Johnson, Founder and CEO of ROQ Software Testing Solutions, is one of the leading figures and experts in the strategic software testing industry.

untested e-commerce technology and software. In recent times this has been melded together at breakneck speed by a remote workforce and hasn’t been sufficiently tested. This makes systems vulnerable to coding errors, traffic tsunamis, DDoS attacks, ransomware, malware attacks and DNS provider downtime which will almost certainly lead to a lack of fulfilment, late delivery and even overcharging. A massive shortage of trained quality engineers in software testing to check, test and main-

tain software and e-commerce systems has created the perfect storm. Retailers face an unprecedented demand on the supply of products and the delivery of goods to the end user in their post-pandemic recovery and with Christmas only 12 weeks away. A number of British retailers have reported systems issues and websites crashing as the UK struggles to return to pre-pandemic output and cope with demand. Software testing plays a critical role in ecommerce retailing as we rely on more online purchases.

As we approach the busiest time of the year with Christmas weeks away, retailers are faced with an unprecedented set of demands from consumers. Demand is outstripping supply and goods are taking longer to manufacture and deliver. Much of this due in part to the factors of Brexit and the pandemic. The Facebook/Instagram/What’s App outage this week has also perfectly demonstrated the vulnerability of systems if they are not regularly tested. No company is too big to fall and the impact on any business can be devastating both financially and in losing customer trust and goodwill. This is also a time when retailers face huge spikes and surges in their e-commerce sites with Black Friday, Cyber Monday and increased online shopping with Christmas demand. Brexit and the pandemic have also created the perfect storm of skills shortages across a number of industries. Software testing provides an essential role to the core functionality of any retail and e-commerce business. Unless you rigorously test systems, you cannot find the weaknesses or vulnerabilities until it’s too late. Often for an e-commerce retailer, this comes at great financial cost and has a major impact on customers.

With the high street already on its knees following the pandemic, which has decimated the retail industry, both physical and online retailers will be desperately looking to their e-commerce systems to make up for lost revenues and profits this Christmas after a disastrous year. However, British tech bosses are warning of potential systems crash as we approach Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the extra demand running up to the Christmas trading period. Following the Facebook/Instagram and What’s App outage this week – as all three platforms went down for 6 hours – this has perfectly highlighted how vulnerable even the biggest tech companies are to systems failures. There is a real concern that e-commerce systems will be pushed to breaking point, with an unprecedented surge in demand from shoppers and issues in the supply chain and delivery fulfilment. The warning comes as both high street and online retailers look to maximise their revenues and profits against a backdrop of

Two British tech firms – Credersi and ROQ, which are at the forefront of tech training and software testing – are addressing the shortage by training “work-ready” quality engineers through a uniquely designed fast-track training course. They are also increasing their efforts to encourage more women and members of the BAME communities into software testing. ROQ are pioneers in delivering strategic software testing solutions and providing trained quality engineers. The firm provides services to the likes of legal giants Linklaters, as well as Deloitte, Boots, Specsavers, Unilever, MS Amlin, The Post Office and the NHS. In December of last year, the Debenhams website crashed when more than 1 million shoppers tried to access the site. The cloud computing

service Fastly took down thousands of websites in multiple countries earlier this year, costing numerous businesses billions in lost revenue. Retailers such as Amazon and eBay also found their websites had disappeared for an hour. These 2 companies alone boast a combined £25 billion in annual sales in the UK, meaning a 1-hour outage would have cost £3 million between them over that period. Other e-commerce sites such as PayPal were also hit and based on their 2020 transactions of $963 billion, the 1-hour outage would have cost them around $106 million. Johnson continued: “It is absolutely vital that any high street or online retailer with an e-commerce presence ensures that their software testing is put front and centre of their operations. There simply

aren’t testing solutions and providing trained quality engineers. The firm provides services to the likes of legal giants Linklaters, as well as Deloitte, Boots, Specsavers, Unilever, MS Amlin, The Post Office and the NHS. Following positive feedback from virtual event attendees, the Glasgow-based travel agency is easing back to face-to-face events with a hybrid concept for its flagship summer cruise event. Pre-pandemic, the agency hosted annual exhibitions in its Glasgow city-centre superstore, which would welcome between 300 and 500 customers throughout the course of each event. During lockdown, the travel group invited customers to join them for a virtual exhibition, bringing inspiration and expertise to living rooms across the country. Barrhead Travel say the introduction of virtual event technology has allowed them to invite customers from all over the country to join the exhibition. The virtual event this weekend will see a blend of on-demand content with specialist appointments also available in all of its local stores as well as video appointments for customers who would prefer to enjoy the holiday booking experience from the comfort of their own

homes. Jacqueline Dobson, President of Barrhead Travel, said that lockdown has left customers with an appetite for adventure – and cruising is top of the list: “During lockdown, people were planning and dreaming of the trips they were longing to take. And, the cruise industry plays a significant role in fulfilling bucket-list breaks and dream getaways. With hundreds of brandnew itineraries and plenty of new ships on the horizon, cruising is more exciting than ever and holidaymakers are booking voyages as far in advance as 2024. “This summer, the ‘seacation’ was one of the most popular holiday types as customers flocked to local ports for their first postlockdown getaway. These coastal cruises gave many new-to-cruise customers the chance to try out their first ever cruise and this has

resulted in an increase in demand for future cruise bookings for a whole new market. “Cruising suits every single type of holidaymaker – and you really can explore anywhere in the world through rivers and oceans. We know travel might look a little different but our team are fully trained in all travel, cruise and destination guidance to ensure a seamless and enjoyable booking experience for every customer. THE MASERATI GHIBLI: A POWERFUL CAR NAMED AFTER A POWERFUL WIND CELEBRATES 55 YEARS

Maserati is celebrating the 55th anniversary of the Ghibli. On 3 November 1966, the Maserati Ghibli made its debut on the world stage, at the Ghia stand at the Turin Motor Show. A new interpretation of the concept of a gran turismo car, the two-seater coupé was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The name recalled a wind, a tradition that continues to this day with the Grecale, part of the Trident brand’s new era. The Ghibli is a powerful, warm wind in North Africa that carries with it a great deal of sand; the decision to take its name was no coincidence, given the car’s speed and the ‘heat’ of its technical

and stylistic specifications. In its presentation of the Ghibli, Maserati debuted a car with a sporty yet unostentatious impression: the engine was newly designed, based on the knowledge from the well-known 8-cylinder used in the Mexico. It was capable of delivering an output of 330 hp in the 4,700-cc version, and was followed by an even more powerful 4,900-cc version. To leave more room for style by lowering the height of the hood, the engine was equipped with a dry sump – a solution used solely in racing, and was mounted on a tubular chassis, in a very low down position. This solution gave

www.capitalbusinesshub.co.uk

the car its typically assertive and slender appearance, one of the cornerstones of its success. The design was entrusted to Ghia, which then had Giorgetto Giugiaro on its creative design team. The most significant design cue – the marker of a decisive change from the Ghibli’s predecessors – was the integration of the volumes: there was no distinction between the car’s body and the passenger compartment; they were neither separate nor overlapping, rather they were joined together as a single surface. While the lines were geometric and taut, Giugiaro’s hand ensured that the sense of stiffness could be smoothed out. The most obvious new stylistic feature was the front, decidedly original for Maserati: the headlights were retract-

able and the very slim grille occupied the car’s entire front. The Trident logo remained in the middle, albeit smaller than before. The side view enhanced the slender line of the Ghibli: a long, low bonnet, a heavily inclined windscreen, perfect proportions with no superfluous decoration. The triangular rear pillar took on its own identity, becoming an iconic component later taken up in other successful models from the Trident brand. The changes from the past could also be seen in the conception of the two-seater interior, where the instruments were built into an overall design that prevailed over the individual components. The result was a gran turismo car that remained true to the exclusive, luxury style, power and comfort – yet with an over-arching theme of racing – for which Maserati cars have always stood out. After it was unveiled at the Turin Motor Show on 3 November 1966, the Ghibli was launched in the market in 1967. The following year, its interior was restyled

and could also be fitted on demand with automatic transmission, as well as a 5-speed manual gearbox. From 1969, the Spyder version also became available, which could be equipped with a hard top; one year later, both models were also offered with a 4,900-cc engine, taking the name Ghibli SS. In this configuration, the car further strengthened its solid market position. In all, between 1967 and 1972, 128 Ghibli Spyder and over 1,200 Ghibli coupé models were produced: one was purchased by Henry Ford (the founder’s grandson), who would place it in the lobby of the Ford Product Development Center in Detroit, as an example to follow and a source of inspiration. An inspiration that has never ceased at the Trident brand: the Ghibli has always been considered an iconic car. In 2013, Maserati decided to unveil a new model, bringing back the Ghibli name for a sports saloon and thus starting another success story.

NINE OUT OF 10 DRIVING INSTRUCTORS SAY LEARNERS HAVE PICKED UP BAD DRIVING HABITS FROM THEIR PARENTS

The pandemic left many 17-year-olds relying on their parents for driving tuition but, when surveyed by Young Driver, 89 per cent of driving instructors say this has meant collecting a few bad habits along the way. Despite this, 98 per cent of the 150 instructors questioned still felt extra experience behind the wheel with a parent is important, although 67 per cent did say that parents should only teach alongside professional tuition. Young Driver, which is the UK’s largest pre-17 driving school, asked the instructors to name the worst habits their pupils had picked up. Others mentioned by instructors included eating and drinking in the car, being too heavy on the gas, not checking blind spots, getting too close to the vehicle in front and having no regard or understanding of the highway code. Young Driver teaches youngsters from the age of 10 how to safely handle a car, providing lessons in one of 200 Vauxhall Corsas with fully qualified instructors on specially created private road systems. Sue Waterfield, head of marketing at Young Driver, said: “For many parents it may be decades since they passed their test, so trying to remember how to teach someone else to drive can be very difficult. Not only that, but advice has changed over the years, so some

of what they do remember may no longer be advised. However, Covid has meant there’s been a severe shortage of driving instructors and so many parents have had to fill the gap. Learners are now reportedly waiting up to six months to take their driving test because of the backlogs, so doing all they can to be fully prepared is vital.” Young Driver has launched a new package which includes aids for both learners and their parents in the learning to drive journey. The scheme has partnered with motoring expert Quentin Willson to publish a book ‘Learn to drive without tears and tantrums’. Quentin has also helped create the Young Driver App, which includes unique 360° VR videos to help learners practice manoeuvres even when they can’t be behind the wheel – and perhaps offer parents some tips too. A hard copy of the book, a threemonth subscription to all the content on the app, and a set of L and P Plates is available at the introductory price of £17.99 (usually £26.98) here: www. youngdriver.eu/readytodrivepack Quentin Willson explains: “The app is a game-changer, with ADIs driving cars on real-life roads so learners can practice and repeat lessons remotely at home. This, combined with the book which pulls together my decades of motoring experience,

will be invaluable resources for learners to become more familiar with road situations through constant repetition at home. Parents can definitely learn something too!” Young Driver has sold more than 1,000,000 lessons since it launched in

2009, which are delivered at 70 UK wide private venues. Research shows that if teens extend their driver education and start learning at an earlier age they are far less likely to have an accident when they go on to pass their test.

MOTORPOINT OPENS FOR BUSINESS IN MANCHESTER

The UK’s leading independent car retailer has been busy transforming the former Mercedes garage on Ashton Old Road in the city in recent months, as part of its ongoing nationwide expansion programme. Motorpoint, which has a network of stores throughout England, Scotland and Wales, will be welcoming customers through the doors this week following a multi-million-pound investment at the Manchester site. To celebrate the opening on Friday, 1st October, the team will be giving away scratch cards to the first 150 visitors with every customer winning a prize including Dash Cams and meals out in Manchester on Motorpoint. Customers are also invited to compete in the Motorpoint Grand Prix – a giant Scalextric racetrack game, with the best time winning a driving experience. “It’s brilliant to finally be opening our doors to the public,” explained Jordan Dean, Head of Retail Operations in Manchester, “and be able to give customers the opportunity to experience for themselves our award-winning combination of choice, value, service and quality.

The 10 worst habits picked up by learner drivers from their parents are: 1. Not following ‘mirror, signal, manoeuvre’ as a matter of course. 2. Steering with one hand (palm) or crossing hands. (Neither will fail you your test as a one off, but it isn’t best practice to do them regularly as you have less control.) 3. Not observing what is happening around them. 4. Coasting. 5. Speeding. 6. Coming down through individual gears instead of block changing. 7. Not creeping and peeping when exiting a junction. 8. Riding the clutch. 9. Impatience/aggression.

“The Motorpoint brand is already well-established in the wider region thanks to our existing network of branches in the North-West, and we’re looking to build on that awareness further with our drive to make car buying easy in Manchester, whether that’s buying in store, reserving online or arranging to have your new vehicle brought to your home.” Motorpoint Manchester will stock 150 low mileage, nearly new cars and light commercial vehicles from 30 different manufacturers’, most of which

are under four years old and with less than 30,000 miles. It is open seven days a week, including 8pm weekdays.
