WARNING OF DANGEROUS OPIATES CIRCULATING IN THE WEST MIDLANDS

Authorities have been made aware of dangerous synthetic opiates circulating in the West Midlands.

There is an increased risk of overdose and death because these synthetic opiates are stronger than usual, or because these drugs are contaminated with more dangerous substances.

A co-ordinated response is underway, spearheaded by the West Midlands Local Resilience Forum Strategic Coordinating Group. This partnership involves West Midlands Police, the Local Authorities, West Midlands Ambulance, HM Coroner, the NHS and the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID). The local authority Directors of Public Health across the region are actively working with local substance misuse treatment partners to reduce harm and raise awareness of this new threat.

To ensure the safety of the community, the group has worked closely with treatment providers and community partners to directly send alerts to individuals who use drugs, drug workers and treatment providers. Advice and guidance has been shared with healthcare professionals to effectively support and treat patients.

Anyone using drugs is strongly urged to seek support, advice and treatment from their local drugs and alcohol treatment provider.

Moreover, we want to emphasise that Naloxone, an antidote to opiate overdoses, can save lives. It is readily available

across the region. Local treatment providers can provide training and Naloxone to individuals using drugs as well as to first responders who can administer this life saving treatment quickly.

Dr Justin Varney, Director of Public Health for Birmingham City Council, and Chair of the regional Strategic Co-ordinating Group responding to this challenge said:

“Recently, there has been an increase in synthetic opioids entering the drug mar-

ket due to global changes in drug supply. These synthetic drugs are stronger and are often mixed with other substances by dealers, resulting in an increased risk of overdose and death.

“Together with our partners, we are committed to raising awareness of the dangers of drug use, and ensuring people know how to access support and treatment for themselves, their family, or friends. We encourage them to contact their local treatment provider to get the support that

Assistant Chief Constable Jayne Meir from West Midlands Police, said:

We are continuing to liaise with partners around the increase in dangerous drugs across the West Midlands.

is available to them.

“In collaboration with first responders and community providers we are actively working to increase access to Naloxone as it has the potential to save lives. We encourage those interested to contact their local substance misuse treatment providers.

“West Midlands Police is leading the criminal investigation and response to tackling the availability of drugs in the region.”

We fully support the current response working alongside health and local authorities to reduce the risk to our vulnerable communities.

If anyone has information on drug dealing, please contact us so we are able to take action.

USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO HELP CLEAN UP FLY-TIPPING HOTSPOTS

Three new artificial intelligence CCTV cameras will boost the council’s coverage of fly-tipping hotspots.

It is the latest chapter of the city’s war against environmental criminals who dump waste on Birmingham’s streets.

Aston, Erdington and North Edgbaston wards will be home to the new cameras, funded by a £45,000 government grant announced in April of this year.

The cameras – which are the first of their kind to be used locally – can detect images of suspected dumped rubbish and then automatically alert council officers to the incident, so they don’t have to manually trawl through hours of recorded footage after fly-tipping occurs.

The council’s successful bid for the funding outlined that fly-tipping data, plus

information from waste enforcement and street cleansing officers, had identified locations in each of the three wards that could benefit from the technology. The cameras will be supplemented by posters and other forms of communications and engagement with the local communities in the wards involved.

Operating as a pilot initially, a full evaluation of the success of the cameras will be carried out, with the units then added to the wider pool of CCTV operated across the city to catch culprits with no regard for the city’s cleanliness.

Cllr Majid Mahmood, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Thanks to the previous investment made by the city council and new grants such as this, we are showing we are on the side of people

TICKETS PLEASE! WEST MIDLANDS RAILWAY IS ON THE HUNT FOR FOUR JUNIOR TRAIN CONDUCTORS

All aboard for a competition your kids will never forget! West Midlands Railway (WMR) – operated by West Midlands Trains (WMT) – has launched its search for four junior conductors, giving mini train enthusiasts the chance to live out their train conducting dreams for the day*. During October half-term, the four lucky winners will get to work alongside real life conductors on one of WMR’s brand-new trains.

Having officially joined the railway network across the Shrewsbury, Hereford and the newly named Elephant & Bear lines, the new Class 196 trains feature more seats, additional underseat luggage space, bike storage, and greater accessibility. Following hot on the heels are the new Class 730 trains with the same great benefits which will be arriving on the Walsall-Wolverhampton and Cross City lines soon.

To apply to become a junior conductor, kids (via their parents and guardians) are invited to share a video of up to 30 seconds** on either Facebook, Instagram or TikTok tagging West Midlands Railway*** and using #LittleTrainConductor. Within the video, they’ll need to tell WMR exactly what they love most about trains, where they last went on a train, and why they think they should be a conductor for the day.

Once applications close on Friday 15th September, entries will be reviewed by a panel of expert judges who will choo-choo-choose the

winners. The panel will see various members of the WMR team all putting their train hats on to find the UK’s next generation of conductors. Under the guidance of the WMR team, the four chosen children along with their parents and guardians will get to experience what it’s really like to conduct a train.

From seeing inside the train’s cab and checking tickets, to greeting customers and even making announcements over the public tannoy system, it will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for budding train fans. Not to mention they will receive their own whistle, high-viz waistcoat and flags to ensure their journey as a conductor runs smoothly.

Jonny Wiseman, director of customer experience at West Midlands Trains, said: “We often receive heart-warming letters from little ones sharing their passion for the world of trains. And that’s what prompted us to come up with a way of giving aspiring train enthusiasts the chance to live out their dreams and become a conductor for the day.

“The rail industry is a fascinating place to work and, as well as being a lot of fun, initiatives like this are a great way to inspire the future of rail professionals. We can’t wait to view all the entries and to welcome the four lucky winners aboard one of our brand-new trains.”

who care for and value their neighbourhoods – and that we are willing to try out new technology to deliver a cleaner and greener Birmingham.

“There is absolutely no excuse to dump waste on our streets. It’s disgusting and means we have to spend money that could be better used in other ways to meet the priorities of citizens.

“This CCTV should help us monitor hotspot areas in a more efficient way and bring to justice those who are responsible. Unfortunately, we have to regularly issue fixed penalty notices to offenders across the city and where appropriate we will take cases through the courts – with hefty fines or prison the uncomfortable prospects for those who are guilty.”

MAJOR BOOST FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WITH PLANS TO TRANSFORM YOUTH CENTRES

New youth centres will be built and old ones refurbished as part of government plans to give young people better access to positive out-ofschool activities as the next phase of the Youth Investment Fund is confirmed.

This follows Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer setting out her vision for the youth sector, that every young person should have “someone to talk to, something to do, somewhere to go.”

The plans will see 44 youth centres share a slice of £70 million Government funding through its Youth Investment Fund.

The funding will help as many as 12,000 extra 11 to 18-year-olds across the country having access to regular, positive activities every year, on top of the thousands of young people who already enjoy these opportunities.

In another boost for young people, The National Lottery Community Fund, the largest community funder in the UK, has today confirmed it will match fund the initial Government commitment of £11 million for the Million Hours Fund bringing the total to £22 million.

Announced in March as part of the Prime Minister’s Anti Social Behaviour Action Plan, the move will mean hundreds of organisations in areas of high anti-social behaviour incidents can stay open for an extra night a week. The support is now guaranteed until March 2026.

Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer said: I want every young person to have the opportunity to access the kinds of life-changing activities which expand their horizons and allow them to develop vital life skills.

These next 44 youth centres will give 12,000 more young people the opportunity to access these activities. Building on the first tranche of Youth Investment Fund investment that is seeing new projects like the Alt Valley Communiversity opening in Liverpool and support for Scouts and Girlguiding groups to reduce their waiting lists. We will make sure every young person has someone to talk to, something to do, somewhere to go.

David Knott, Chief Executive of The National Lottery Community Fund, said:

We’re delighted to be match funding the Million Hours Fund to bring much-needed additional youth provision and activities to young people across England. Supporting children and young people to thrive is a strategic priority for us as the UK’s largest community funder. We want to thank National Lottery players for making this important investment into improving young people’s prospects and lives possible.

Recipients of the Youth Investment Fund are across England. The full list of beneficiaries include:

• The 105th Sheffield (High Green) Scout Group has been awarded over £1.8 million, allowing them to demolish and rebuild their Scout Group building. The new site will be bigger and more sustainable, including a new kitchen and outdoor space allowing the Scouts to complete more badge work and learn new skills. This will allow the group to expand its reach from 69 to a potential 267 11-18 year olds.

• Funding of nearly £974,000 will transform Burnley Boys and Girls Club for generations to come, with the grant allowing them to reach an additional 225 young people a week. The grant will pay for a new roof for their dilapidated sports hall, new outdoor facilities, as well the construction of a new two-storey extension that will house a gymnasium, a chill-out room and three counselling rooms.

• A grant of over £420,000 will allow The Chichester Shed to renovate its site into a vibrant, safe space, with constant open access youth offer in the evenings and throughout the holidays. An additional 121 young people will be supported, with a custom built space including everything from a community garden to graffiti wall. During the day the site will be used to support young people not engaged in education, employment, or training, supporting their wellbeing, and helping them to gain vital life skills.

This package of measures comes as part of the Government’s ‘National Youth Guarantee’ that, by 2025, every young person in England will have access to regular clubs and activities, adventures away from home, and volunteering opportunities.

It is backed by more than £500 million.

Since the launch of the National Youth Guarantee, more than 2,100 additional places have also been created in uniformed youth groups such as Scouts and Girlguiding. As part of the over £16 million of funding allocated for uniformed groups, we will continue to recruit more adult volunteers, to help reduce waiting lists alongside creating additional places for young people.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s award has also been supported, with more than 15,500 participant places being created. It comes after the Government announced it would offer the award to every mainstream secondary state school in England for the first time – supporting young people who may face barriers to taking part, such as not being able to afford kit for outdoor expeditions.

GREEN FLAG SUCCESS AFTER BIRMINGHAM PARKS RETAIN AWARDS

DIAMOND DOMINO EFFECT EXPLAINS ERUPTION SPOT SECRETS

The breakup of tectonic plates is the main driving force behind the generation and eruption of diamond-rich magmas from deep inside the Earth, a new study has found.

Diamonds, which form under great pressures at depth, are hundreds of millions, or even billions, of years old. They are typically found in a type of volcanic rock known as kimberlite. Kimberlites are found in the oldest, thickest, strongest parts of continents – most notably in South Africa, home to the diamond rush of the late 19th century. But how and why they got to Earth’s surface has, until now, remained a mystery.

The new research, led by the University of Southampton alongside experts from the University of Birmingham examined the effects of global tectonic forces on these volcanic eruptions spanning the last billion years.

Dr Stephen Jones, Associate Professor in Earth Systems at the University of Bir-

mingham, and study co-author said:

“We found that a domino effect can explain how continental breakup leads to formation of kimberlite magma. During rifting, a small patch of the continental root is disrupted and sinks into the mantle below, triggering a chain of similar flow patterns beneath the nearby continent.”

30 MILLION YEAR WAIT

To address this question, the team used statistical analysis, including machine learning, to forensically examine the link between continental breakup and kimberlite volcanism. The results showed the eruptions of most kimberlite volcanoes occurred 20 to 30 million years after the tectonic breakup of Earth’s continents.

This discovery prompted the scientists to explore what geological process could drive this pattern. They found that the Earth’s mantle – the convecting layer

between the crust and core – is disrupted by rifting (or stretching) of the crust, even thousands of kilometres away Dr Tom Gernon, Associate Professor of Earth Science and Principal Research Fellow at the University of Southampton, and lead author of the study, said: “The pattern of diamond eruptions is cyclical, mimicking the rhythm of the supercontinents, which assemble and break up in a repeated pattern over time. But previously we didn’t know what process causes diamonds to suddenly erupt, having spent millions – or billions – of years stashed away 150 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface.”

The new research could be used to identify the possible locations and timings of past volcanic eruptions tied to this process, offering valuable insights that could enable the discovery of diamond deposits in the future.

The Keep Britain Tidy scheme recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for their management across the United Kingdom and around the world.

In Birmingham all 15 sites, maintained by Birmingham City Council and supported by ‘Friends Of’ parks groups, that earned the honour previously have retained their prestigious flags for 2023. Nationally, 2,216 sites are on the roll of honour this year.

Cllr Majid Mahmood, Cabinet Member for Environment at Birmingham City Council, said: “Birmingham residents love our parks, whether it is their local one they use often or travelling further afield for a special occasion, so it is

great to see these sites are continuing to reach the standard for this well-regarded scheme.

“Our parks provide space for exercise, relaxation and have a great positive environmental benefit, which is why we have developed a 25-year City of Nature plan to ensure Birmingham’s open spaces continue to enhance the lives of residents. And with too many people struggling financially right now, they offer a free space to play, often with free or low-cost activities.

“Every time we win or retain a Green Flag award, it is a tribute to each and every member of our parks staff and the volunteers who whose hard work and effort make our open spaces the great assets that they are.”

NEW RULES CRACK DOWN ON ILLEGAL ADS AND PROTECT CHILDREN ONLINE

Social media platforms, websites and services like advertising display networks will have to take tougher action to stop children seeing age-restricted adverts for products like alcohol or gambling.

Fake celebrity scams and pop-up malware from hackers will also be clamped down on as part of new rules to make advertising regulation fit for the digital age.

The plans are published today by the government in response to its Online Advertising Programme.

Online advertising includes the banners or displays which appear around the content of a website, results prioritised at the top of search engines, and popups on a user’s screen. It helps businesses grow by reaching targeted audiences and can be cheaper and quicker than traditional advertising formats. Last year it accounted for three quarters (£26.1 billion) of the £34.8 billion spent on advertising in the UK.

Its rapid development, combined with changes in technology and complex supply chains between marketers and platforms, make it difficult to stop illegal ads appearing.

People frequently encounter fraudulent celebrity endorsements for financial scams, legitimate-looking pop-ups containing hidden malware, and promotions for products prohibited under UK law – such as weapons, drugs, counterfeit fashion and fake ticketing. Children can be exposed to ads for age-restricted products such as alcohol, gambling and adult-rated films and games.

Creative Industries Minister Sir John Whittingdale said:

Advertising is a huge industry in which Britain is a world leader. However, as online advertising has taken a steadily bigger share, the rules governing it have not kept pace and so we intend to strengthen them to ensure consumers are properly protected.

Our plans will shut down the scammers using online adverts to con people out of their cash and will stop damaging and inappropriate products being targeted at children.

We will make sure that our proposed regulation helps keep people safe while supporting and enhancing the legitimate advertising industry so it can maximise its innovation and potential. There is currently a self-regulatory system for the content and placement of online adverts in the UK, overseen by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). The ASA has a strong record of delivering consistent, effective results and holding legitimate advertisers accountable. However regulators are not empowered to act to address illegal harms in the same way as harmful advertising by legitimate businesses. The government intends to introduce new rules to tackle illegal paid-for online adverts and increase protections for children. A range of targeted legislative and non-legislative measures will address the most serious risks linked to online advertising. This approach complements the Online Safety Bill, which is targeted at user generated content, and will build on measures tackling fraudulent advertising in that legislation.

The new statutory regulation will put more responsibilities on major play-

ers across the online advertising supply chain. As well as online publishers, apps and websites serving ads, ‘adtech’ intermediary services which facilitate the placement and distribution of online adverts will be in scope. Promotional posts by social media influencers where they receive payment or free products will also be covered.

Social media firms, search engines and other websites will be required by law to have proportionate systems and processes to stop people being served illegal adverts, and prevent under-18s seeing adverts for products and services illegal to be sold to them. This will improve safety, transparency and consumer trust by introducing more effective action while supporting industry growth.

In due course, the government will launch a further consultation on the details of potential legislation – including its preferred choice for a regulator to oversee the new illegal paid-for advertising rules. New legislation would not affect the ASA’s remit for the content and placement of legitimate paid-for advertising online.

Ministers will this week convene a new

taskforce to gather more evidence around illegal advertising and build on industry initiatives to tackle harms and increase protections for children before the legislation is introduced.

The taskforce will be chaired by Creative Industries Minister John Whittingdale and Mark Lund, the chair of the Advertising Standards Board of Finance and former president of McCann UK and

Europe. The group will include representatives from across the advertising industry, including the ASA, as well as tech trade bodies, consumer groups and the government’s Anti-Fraud Champion, Anthony Browne.

Mark Lund, chair of The Advertising Standards Board of Finance and deputy chair of the Online Advertising Taskforce, said:

UK advertising is a dynamic engine for the UK economy because it’s creative and trusted.

So, I’m delighted to be helping lead in the task force’s role in strengthening industry’s response to illegal harms advertising and the protection of children online, building on the long-term success of the ASA and the self-regulation system in keeping both trust and creativity at world leading levels.

Anti-Fraud Champion Anthony Browne said:

We remain absolutely committed to fighting fraud and this is another example of the government delivering on a pledge from its pioneering Fraud Strategy. Eighty percent of fraud is cyber enabled and it often starts with fraudulent posts and adverts on social media. I am therefore pleased to see new measures being introduced to tackle these.

The government will continue to work with industry, and law enforcement, to prevent fraud from happening and ensure better support is given to the public.

Ukrainian academics and students have travelled to Birmingham to take part in a summer school on their country’s language, history, and culture – one of the first events of its kind in the UK.

Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (IFNUL) and the University of Birmingham are co-hosting the two-week summer school with seven Ukrainian academics and three students joining British participants.

Working in partnership with Birmingham allows IFNUL to continue its long-running summer school programme, which is not possible given the current conflict in Ukraine – maintaining the Lviv institution’s tradition of teaching Ukrainian language and culture to non-Ukrainians.

IFNUL and the University of Birmingham signed a twinning agreement in June last year, demonstrating their shared values during the current invasion of Ukraine.

The ‘Unlocking Ukraine: A Journey through Language, Culture, and History’ summer school will help to:

Raise awareness of Ukraine’s culture and context to a broader audience including University of Birmingham students, members of the public, and Eastern European communities in the Midlands; Provide an opportunity to study a language rarely offered at UK institutions, yet crucial for interpreting the war through Ukrainian, rather than Russian, eyes;

Unite Ukrainian scholars and cultural representatives with University of Birmingham experts to share research and expertise; and

Support the City of Birmingham’s sanctuary mission by working with local stakeholders to build a culture of hospitality and welcome.

Language tutor Oleksandra Antoniv (Senior Lecturer of Ukrainian Applied Linguistics in the Faculty of Philology, IFNUL) commented: “It is very valuable for Ukrainian researchers to be heard in the world. The summer school in Birmingham is a unique opportunity, together with British researchers, to open the multifaceted world of the Ukrainian language and culture to those who want to destroy stereotypes that have been imposed for a long time.

“I am very impressed by the stories of the participants who opened their hearts to Ukrainians, opened their homes to Ukrainians and support Ukraine in this difficult time. And these human contacts became a motivation to study Ukraine.”

Academic Olena Haleta (Professor of Literary Theory and Comparative Literary

Studies, IFNUL) commented: “The summer school, organized by the University of Birmingham in cooperation with the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, is a unique opportunity to build a direct dialogue between our academic communities and, more broadly, our societies. This is an opportunity to convey two important messages: that an exhausting and destructive war continues in Ukraine today because of the Russian invasion, but that Ukraine today is not only a war, but also a rich cultural and intellectual tradition, modern social and creative initiatives, and hard work for the future. We are sincerely grateful to our Birmingham colleagues and summer school participants for their openness and willingness to develop mutual understanding and share common values.”

The summer school is a joint venture between IFNUL academics and the University of Birmingham’s Institute for German and European Studies (IGES) and Centre for Russian, European and Eurasian Studies CREES, and the two universities’ international offices.

Our diverse community of learners have come together to explore, appreciate, and celebrate the richness of culture in all its forms. We appreciate the curiosity of the participants and the will to expand their horizons. We are also convinced that this school will lay the foundation for further comprehensive cooperation for the development of education and cultural exchange.

Liubov Mykiievych, Andriana Terekhovska and Anhelina Berezhnenko, Students contributors, IFNUL Students contributors, Liubov Mykiievych, Andriana Terekhovska and Anhelina Berezhnenko commented: “Ukrainian culture is a huge treasure with many traditions, rich language, art, and cultural heritage. We believe this summer school should bring wonderful memories, transformative experiences, and valuable knowledge that its participants can gain throughout the enriching program.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the organisers, students, teachers, and staff who contributed to the successful beginning of the summer school. Their

enthusiasm, commitment, and openmindedness brought together an exceptional learning community that will now have the opportunity of personal growth and intellectual discovery.”

The summer school also features experts on Ukraine from across the UK, as well as Birmingham-based art institution Centrala – a non-profit organisation supporting Central and Eastern European migrants in Birmingham since 2009. By raising awareness and fostering understanding of Ukrainian culture and heritage across communities, the summer school complements Centrala’s aim to improve integration and community cohesion, and strengthen the City of Birmingham’s sanctuary pledge to build a society where Central and Eastern European communities are welcomed and integrated.

The summer school also showcases the University of Birmingham’s unique collection of archaeological items from the Kherson region, housed on campus in the Barber Institute of Fine Arts.

Since Russia’s invasion in February last year, interest in Ukraine and its rich culture has surged to unprecedented levels in the UK. The summer school offers participants an opportunity to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Ukrainian language and the complexity of Ukraine’s history and culture.

Professor Adam Tickell, University of Birmingham

University of Birmingham Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Adam Tickell commented: “We welcome our Ukrainian guests to the University of Birmingham for a summer school experience which promises to provide participants with a deeper appreciation of Ukraine and its people.

“Since Russia’s invasion in February last year, interest in Ukraine and its rich culture has surged to unprecedented levels in the UK. The summer school offers participants an opportunity to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Ukrainian language and the complexity of Ukraine’s history and culture.”

The summer school’s extensive and diverse curriculum includes an exploration of modern Ukrainian theatre, histories of displacement, and the intricacies of multiculturalism in Ukraine. Participants can choose to take part full-time, which includes engaging language-learning sessions, or part-time for those who prefer a more flexible schedule and do not wish to have language training.

BEN SUPPORTS PEOPLE FACING A SUMMER OF MONEY WORRIES DURING COST-OF-LIVING CRISIS

Ben, the automotive industry charity, is providing support to individuals and families who are facing money worries, debt or urgent need this summer.

Ben is already providing vital support for many families who are struggling to make ends meet and unable to afford essentials such as food and utilities during the cost-of-living crisis. Over the last 12 months, Ben has supported 128 households who couldn’t afford to put food on the table, 66 households who couldn’t pay their rent or mortgage costs and 52 households who couldn’t afford their utility bills.

More and more people than ever before are contacting Ben’s Helpline for support – during April-June 2023 there was a 23% increase in enquiries (year on year) and a 20% increase in support cases (year on year). People aren’t only struggling to make ends meet, they are also struggling with their mental health. Ben considers managing money as a key area that impacts on wellbeing. Given the knock-on effect that financial problems can have, increasing levels of stress, anxiety, low mood and depression are made worse when people can’t afford basic living costs.

In addition to supporting basic living costs, Ben also wants to give families, who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it, the opportunity to enjoy spending time together and create special memories during the holidays. This is as well as taking pressure off families who face impending back to school costs including school uniform, bags and PE kits.

Ben is encouraging people not to struggle alone and get in touch.

Here are some quotes from people who have been supported by Ben

during tough times:

“I felt at the lowest of low points in my life. I’ve never applied for any sort of benefit or hand-out in my life.

I felt ashamed and embarrassed to ask for financial support. Ben made me feel welcome and worthy of this support.”

“The food voucher came through yesterday. My mum cried her eyes out, it’s such a weight off our minds. We can’t thank you enough!”

“I was reluctant to call Ben – typical man, not asking for help… but I did and after the first few minutes, knew I had made the right decision.”

Rachel Clift, Health & Wellbeing Director at Ben, said: “Times are getting increasingly tough for families and individuals, especially now the summer holidays are here. If you’re worried about making ends meet, buying food, paying the bills and school uniforms for September, you’re not alone, Ben is here for you. We want everyone in our industry to know that we’re here.

“Many individuals and families are being pushed to the edge with the current rising cost of living. It’s also impacting other areas of their health and wellbeing so if you work, or have worked, in the automotive industry please get in touch now if you’re struggling or feeling at breaking point. You can contact our free and confidential helpline.”

Ben is here for those who work, or have worked, in the automotive industry and their family dependents. Ben is already supporting many automotive families this Summer. Don’t suffer in silence, contact our helpline: 08081 311 333 or use our webchat at www.ben.org.uk. You can also access Ben’s out of hours text support line by texting BEN to 85258.

FOREIGN SECRETARY TRAVELS TO MIDDLE EAST TO BUILD MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL TIES

HOPE FOR THE CHILDREN OF LEBANON THE BEIRUT EXPLOSION, THREE YEARS ON.

The Foreign Secretary will travel to the Middle East today on a 3-day tour to emphasise the UK’s growing, mutually-beneficial partnerships with the region.

The visit, which will include Qatar, Kuwait and Jordan, comes after the government recently announced that citizens from Gulf countries and Jordan will benefit from the UK’s new Electronic Travel Authorisation visa scheme, which will make travel to the UK cheaper and easier for visitors.

All 3 countries are also important energy, defence and security partners for the UK, and trade and investment with the Gulf is vital to support the Prime Minister’s priorities to grow the economy. UK trade with Qatar and Kuwait was worth £18.1 billion last year alone.

Penny Appeal partnered with the Beirut Marathon Association and their Right to Run initiative! Together, they have created a unique platform for children of all backgrounds to unite, overcome obstacles, and celebrate our common humanity.

Ridwana Wallace-Laher, Penny Appeal’s CEO, was invited to attend the press conference in Lebanon to kick off the eagerly anticipated Right To Run initiative, sponsored by Penny Appeal.

The weekend witnessed the launch of an inspiring program that promotes fitness, empowerment, and equality for all, with a special focus on underprivileged communities.

The Right to Run series is an annual celebration organised by the Beirut Marathon Association, championing progress towards gender equality while acknowledging the ongoing need for a more inclusive society.

This incredible program includes a range of races and activities, bringing together children aged 7 to 17 from diverse backgrounds and abilities. United by their shared commitment to breaking barriers and advocating for inclusion, these young runners are set to make a powerful impact in the future. Penny Appeal is proud to be the lead sponsor in the delivery of this project, contributing towards our shared vision for a more inclusive society.

The event was a bittersweet moment for our CEO, Ridwana Wallace-Laher, who was in Beirut for the first time since visiting following the tragic explosion of August 2020. It only took a few minutes for the blast to destroy large portions of the city and cause

mass devastation, but the people of Lebanon had been experiencing hardship and neglect for years before this tragedy occurred.

As part of Penny Appeal’s Disaster Response Team, Ridwana was on the ground delivering critical aid in the days following the tragedy. In the aftermath, Penny Appeal and our partners helped 23,691 people in Lebanon, delivering 21,000 hot meals, 7,080 food packs, 2,330 hygiene kits, 500 medical consultations, as well as community psychosocial support and shelter programming.

Three years later, Ridwana is back in Beirut, remembering the lives that were lost in the 2020 blast while working towards building futures and opening opportunities for generations to come.

“As I stand before you in this beautiful city of Beirut, I am reminded of the heart-breaking scenes I witnessed first-hand in 2020 at the site of the explosion, and my heart is broken as I remember all of those who were affected by this horrific tragedy,” she told delegates at yesterday’s event.

“Out of such a horrific calamity, however, we also saw the very best of communities, with everyone coming together to help, support, and rebuild the lives of those affected.

“The love, strength of community, and unparalleled compassion that I witnessed in Lebanon have stayed with me ever since, and I’m really grateful to all of you for allowing me and Penny Appeal the opportunity to come back to Beirut today for the Right to Run 2023.”

In Jordan, the Foreign Secretary will announce up to £1.5 million to support initiatives for women and girls. The funding will go towards civil society organisations. He will also meet with representatives from UNHCR (the UN’s refugee agency) and the World Food Programme where he will announce funding of £30

million over 3 years to provide cash assistance and support to the poorest refugees. This will cover their basic food and living needs – reaching an estimated 70,000 refugees per year in the camps and host communities.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said:

I am delighted to be back in the

Middle East. The UK’s mutually beneficial relationships with the Gulf and Jordan continue to thrive. We have a bright future together.

From working together on shared goals like developing stronger trade ties and security, I am proud of how we are collaborating for the benefit of us all.

The UK also remains committed to supporting refugees and host communities, collaborating with our partners to help the most vulnerable in the region.

In Qatar the Foreign Secretary will meet with the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.

MAJOR BOOST FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WITH PLANS TO TRANSFORM YOUTH CENTRES

New youth centres will be built and old ones refurbished as part of government plans to give young people better access to positive out-of-school activities as the next phase of the Youth Investment Fund is confirmed.

Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer said: I want every young person to have the opportunity to access the kinds of life-

changing activities which expand their horizons and allow them to develop vital life skills.

The plans for youth centres announced today will mean young people can take part in activities such as dance, theatre, sport, music and art sessions as well as vital skills and employment training.

The announcement comes after the Culture Secretary laid out her commitment to boost youth services in a speech at the Onward think tank last month.

The investment will target youth services in some country’s most underserved areas where need is high and existing provision is low. The new funding means more than £160 million will have been committed to 87 centres in England since 2021. As many as 300 projects are expected to be built or renovated over the next two years.

Earlier this week the Culture Secretary cut the ribbon to reopen The Alt Valley Communiversity in Liverpool, the first major project to be completed through

the Youth Investment Fund. The site received £343,000 to build a new industrial kitchen and an outdoor performance space. It will create more opportunities for skills development and expand its reach to an additional 100 participants a week.

Nick Temple, CEO of Social Investment Business said: The Youth Investment Fund is all about prioritising the needs of young people in England and creating a more equal society for future generations. It is wonderful to see how the fund is already transforming young people’s opportunities to experience the joy of local youth services designed for, and by, young people. Today’s announcement means another 12,000 young people can access quality, sustainable and accessible youth clubs. It is so exciting to see the first Youth Investment Fund projects open their doors to young people, giving them every opportunity to make friends, have fun, discover their passions, and thrive. And it is just the start: thousands more young people will benefit from new or expanded local youth services, supporting their wellbeing and helping them gain vital skills for life and work.

The 105th Sheffield (High Green) Scout Group has been awarded over £1.8 million, allowing them to demolish and rebuild their Scout Group building. The new site will be bigger and more sustainable, including a new kitchen and outdoor space allowing the Scouts to complete more badge work and learn new skills. This will allow the group to expand its reach from 69 to a potential 267 11-18 year olds.

Funding of nearly £974,000 will transform Burnley Boys and Girls Club for generations to come, with the grant allowing them to reach an additional 225 young people a week. The grant will pay for a new roof for their dilapidated sports hall, new outdoor facilities, as well the construction of a new two-storey extension that will house a gymnasium, a chill-out room and three counselling rooms.

A grant of over £420,000 will allow The Chichester Shed to renovate its site into a vibrant, safe space, with constant open access youth offer in the evenings and throughout the holidays. An additional

121 young people will be supported, with a custom built space including everything from a community garden to graffiti wall.

PAKISTANI JOURNALIST TAKES ON BERLIN MARATHON TO HELP INSPIRE OTHERS IN HIS COMMUNITY

A journalist and primetime presenter from Pakistan’s largest TV network, Geo News, is aiming to inspire others from his country to lead a healthy lifestyle by taking on the Berlin Marathon.

Junaid Muhammad, 38, will also be running to raise money for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) in memory of his father who sadly died of heart disease in June 2008. He was just 56. He said: “My father was diagnosed with heart disease in 2002. His health was declining and doctors discovered one of his valves was narrow, and it was affecting his blood circulation.

“At the time there wasn’t much awareness about open heart surgeries in our community, technology wasn’t that advanced and the treatment was very expensive. It wasn’t until around five years later that hospitals in Pakistan became better equipped and the understanding around heart surgery got better. Sadly, it was too late for my father and in 2008 he passed away from heart disease when I was 23. He was just 56. No one had ever passed away so young in the family before. It was a huge shock to us all.”

Junaid, originally from Lahore and now based in Karachi, Pakistan, also has a younger brother and sister, and said his father’s death really affected them. “We had a very close connection and a great friendship. I could talk to him about everything, and I miss him as both a father and friend,” he said.

Since then, the whole family have tried to overhaul their lifestyle, recognising the important impact eating well and exercis-

ing can have on decreasing your risk of developing heart and circulatory diseases. He added: “I really worry about the people around me and want them to know what options they have. Since my father died, the whole family have tried to change our lifestyles – in terms of eating a healthier diet, getting more sleep and exercising. We realised how important that is to maintain good health and have regular heart check-ups too.”

Junaid since took up running and began taking it more seriously after he discovered there were only three Pakistani origin people to have ever finished all six Abbot World Major Marathons. He now has his sights set on completing the Berlin Marathon for the BHF on 24th September. He said: “Running a marathon gives you such a great sense of achievement. But it’s even more phenomenal when you have a personal reason which is connected to a loved one, and you know you’re helping to make a difference.

“There isn’t an organisation like the British Heart Foundation in Pakistan, but I’ve always been so inspired by the work the charity does. That’s one of the reasons I wanted to raise money for the BHF. I want to help fund research to change people’s lives and I want to spread the message about the charity’s work. It’s only thanks to the help of decades of research that families can stay together for longer.”

It’s not only the work of the BHF that Junaid is promoting in his country. The journalist who recently completed both Boston and London marathons, is on a mission to run all six in the World Marathon Majors.

He hopes that in doing so, he can encourage more people in the South Asian community to take up the sport.

He added: “The number of South Asian people running marathons is still relatively low, and it’s important to diversify these events. In the UK it’s very normal for people to be running and moving, but in Pakistan, a country which has nearly 250 million people, it’s not as common. My mission is to change that. I not only want to represent my country and bring together the running communities of UK Pakistan and Germany, but also share the message about why taking part in sport is so important for your health and for your future.”

Globally, it’s estimated that one in 13 people are living with a heart or circulatory disease, with these conditions causing one in three deaths. Even making small changes to improve your health will help reduce your risk of developing heart disease in the future. As well as increasing activity levels, eating a heart healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, stopping smoking if you smoke and limiting alcohol will all help reduce your risk.

Karen McDonnell, senior events manager at the BHF, said: “We never fail to be inspired by the stories of our supporters and Junaid is no exception. As he highlights, leading a healthy lifestyle is so important for our heart health, and we hope it inspires many others to get active and eat well.

“Every step he takes will help fund lifesaving research into heart and cardiovascular diseases. We’re so grateful for all of Junaid’s support and can’t wait to hear how he gets on at the Berlin Marathon.”

UK’S £38 MILLION AID MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN NIGERIA – FOREIGN SECRETARY JAMES CLEVERLY

The United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has said that over £38 million of UK humanitarian assistance has saved the lives of vulnerable, conflict-affected people in North-East Nigeria – including women and girls.

The Foreign Secretary made these remarks whilst visiting the United Nations’ Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) in Abuja, meeting UNHAS staff.

The UN estimates that over 8 million people in North-East Nigeria urgently require life-saving humanitarian assistance due to protracted conflict and crisis in the Lake Chad Basin region.

Earlier this year, the UN launched a special humanitarian appeal to prevent famine and provide life-saving assistance in North-East Nigeria over the critical ‘lean season’ months (June to August).

Also, the Nigerian government recently declared a ‘state of emergency’ on food insecurity across the country.

The UK’s humanitarian assistance has been directly responding to these urgent calls for action, in partnership with the Nigerian people and its government.

Over the last 12 months, the UK has provided over £38 million of humanitarian assistance in North-East Nigeria. This funding is helping to protect people, build their resilience to the ongoing crisis, and prevent famine in this extremely foodinsecure region.

During his visit to UNHAS – one of several UK humanitarian partners in Nigeria – the Foreign Secretary heard directly from aid workers and government representatives responding to the crisis, in-

cluding on how UK International Development is delivering assistance to people who need it most.

The Foreign Secretary was accompanied by Dr Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development. This ministry is responsible for coordination of the Federal Government’s humanitarian response

and aligning stakeholder responses. The Foreign Secretary was also accompanied by the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Matthias Schmale; the Deputy Country Representative of UN World Food Programme Guy Adoua; Country Representative of UNICEF Cristian Munduate; ICRC’s Head of Delegation in Nigeria Yann Bonzon; and Trond Jens, Head of Office of OCHA in Nigeria.

UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, said:

I am very proud of the UK’s humanitarian partnerships in North-East Nigeria. The £38 million we have contributed over the last 12 months is saving the lives of vulnerable people, including women and girls, who are demonstrating extraordinary resilience in the face of this protracted crisis. We will continue to work with

the new Nigerian government and other partners to support North-East Nigeria so the whole country can reach its potential. The whole international community must support these efforts.

UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Matthias Schmale, said:

On behalf of the humanitarian community, I am deeply grateful for the £38 million contribution of the UK for humanitarian action in the North-East, which is contributing to giving countless people and, notably vulnerable women and children, a second chance. We are facing further funding challenges and are hoping that partners will step up their support to prevent further deterioration of the dramatic food insecurity and malnutrition situation.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development Dr Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, said: We are keen to intensify cooperation with the UK government, particularly on increasing coordination between our new ministry and other ministries and partners across the humanitarian response. We particularly appreciate the UK’s humanitarian assistance because it is not only financial, but also based on strong coordination, which we are keen to develop further.

• ask HMRC’s digital assistant to find information about Self Assessment. If they cannot help, chat live with an HMRC webchat adviser.

• access webinars and videos about Self Assessment

Customers need to be aware of the risk of falling victim to phishing scams and should never share their HMRC login details with anyone, including a tax agent, if they have one. HMRC scams advice is available on GOV.UK.

The nuclear industry underpins hundreds of thousands of jobs across the UK, both directly and through the extended supply chain, and is growing rapidly. Nuclear has a wide variety of roles ranging from technical scientific and engineering roles through to logistics, project management, commercial and finance – with a range of apprentice and graduate opportunities. The UK’s nuclear capability plays a significant role in the security, prosperity and resilience of our nation. Putting our nuclear workforce at the heart of this upskilling work will help deliver on the Prime Minister’s priority to grow the economy and support UK jobs.

Chaired by Sir Simon Bollom – former Chief Executive Officer of Defence Equipment and Support – the Taskforce will address how the UK continues to build nuclear skills across its defence and civil workforce.

The UK’s Nuclear sectors are in positive periods of growth and the workforce will expand further given the AUKUS nuclear submarine partnership and the government’s drive around energy security.

Minster for Defence Procurement, James Cartlidge said: By developing nuclear skills, we are not just investing in the UK economy but our national security.

The creation of this new Taskforce will challenge the whole of the UK’s nuclear sector to be ambitious in addressing the nuclear skills gap, and we are delighted to appoint Sir Simon Bollom to drive this work forward.

Building on the work already undertaken with industry and across government by the Ministry of Defence and Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the Taskforce will develop a skills strategy to support the significant growth expected across a range of roles in the defence and civil nuclear sectors in the coming years.

Against a backdrop of increasing international competition for such roles, the Taskforce will set up the UK’s nuclear sector for future success, supporting industry to build a long-term and sustainable pipeline of skills to meet our nuclear ambition.

Minister for Nuclear, Andrew Bowie said:

The UK’s nuclear revival, with the launch of Great British Nuclear, will put us centre-stage in the global race to unleash a new generation of nuclear technology.

The Nuclear Skills Taskforce will support this

expansion by securing the skills and workforce we need to deliver this, opening up exciting opportunities and careers to help bolster our energy security.

The launch of Great British Nuclear will boost energy security and create job opportunities across the UK. Recently launched, it forms part of a revival of nuclear power to place the UK at the forefront of a global race to develop cutting-edge nuclear technologies and deliver cleaner, cheaper and more secure energy.

Great British Nuclear will deliver the government’s long-term nuclear programme and support the government’s ambition to deliver up to 24GW of nuclear power in the UK by 2050. Part of this will be delivered through the huge projects taking place at the Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C nuclear power plants. Having served as an engineer officer in the RAF for 35 years, and most recently as the Chief Executive Officer of the Defence Equipment and Support, Taskforce Chair Sir Simon Bollom has a strong network and credibility with industry given his extensive experience in Defence. He is also currently on the Board of the Submarine Delivery Agency.

Sir Simon Bollom KBE CB FREng, Chair of the Nuclear Skills Taskforce, said:

I am absolutely delighted to have secured this extremely important role. The Nuclear Sector is vital to our nation, and I am proud to have been given the opportunity to lead such an important Taskforce to ensure that we have the people, and skills we need to deliver our Programmes.

SECOND INVESTMENT ZONE FOR THE NORTH TO UNLOCK MULTI-MILLION POUND INVESTMENTS

The government has launched England’s second Investment Zone in Liverpool which could unlock £320 million of private investment and deliver 4,000 jobs, across Liverpool, Runcorn, St. Helens, Maghull and Prescot over the next 5 years.

An initial £10 million investment will be made by US pharmaceutical manufacturer TriRx, to enhance its capabilities to manufacture monoclonal antibodies, a type of immunotherapy that work by blocking certain diseases from affecting healthy cells and are used to treat numerous types of diseases including cancers, arthritis and skin conditions.

This investment in Liverpool’s existing Speke Pharma cluster – home to one of the UK’s leading regions for bioprocessing – is the first step in unlocking a total pipeline up to £320 million of further private funding from a range of investors in the life sciences sector, helping to deliver over 4,000 jobs in the region over the next 5 years.

Backed by £80 million in government funding, the Investment Zone will benefit from a range of interventions which could include skills, infrastructure and tax reliefs, depending on local circumstances – with the potential to completely transform the region, making Liverpool a pharmaceutical production superpower. The government will continue to work with the Liverpool City Region, University of Liverpool and other local partners to co-develop the plans for their Life Sciences Investment Zone, including agreeing priority development sites and specific interventions to drive cluster growth, over the summer, ahead of final confirmation of plans.

Minister Lee Rowley welcomed the first of those investments as he met executives from US pharmaceutical manufacturer TriRx at their state-of-the-art biotech facility in Speke.

Minister Lee Rowley said: Investment Zones will drive growth across the UK. For Liverpool City Region that means over £300 million of private investment and 4,000 new, well-paid jobs – all building on the city’s world leading reputation in medical science.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said:

Our area is fortunate to play home to world-leading clusters in life science research and innovation, which support thousands of secure, well-paid jobs and training opportunities for local people. I am incredibly proud of what our region has achieved in the sector – but this is just a down payment on my future ambitions. I want us to go even further and establish our region at the forefront of UK science and innovation.

With a potential £310 million worth of investment and thousands of local jobs on offer, it is clear that this is an opportunity worth exploring. Yet, throughout this process, I have been clear that any investment in our area must go much further than purely financial incentives. I want to use our status as a force for good, to connect our residents up to secure, wellpaid jobs and training opportunities, and attract transformational investment into our area.

To play our part in making that happen, we will be investing 5% of GVA in R&D over the next few years – that is nearly double national targets. Becoming an innovation superpower might sound like a

lofty ambition – but I believe that if anywhere has the potential to achieve it, then it’s the Liverpool City Region. The health and life sciences sector already contributes an estimated £290 million to the Liverpool City Region’s economy every year. Building on this strength, the Liverpool City Region’s Investment Zone includes the University of Liverpool and is part of the government’s vision to drive growth in the sectors of the future including advanced manufacturing, green industries, digital and technology.

Mark Proctor, AstraZeneca Site Lead for Speke said: AstraZeneca welcomes the establishment of the Liverpool City Region Investment Zone focussed on life sciences, which has the potential to attract more businesses to the region’s already thriving medicine development and manufacturing cluster.

We employ 400 people at our site in Speke to manufacture our intranasal influenza vaccine, used in the UK for the child and adolescent immunisation programme and exported to markets around the world.

The site has the potential to expand into new technology platforms for vaccines and we look forward to working with the Liverpool City Region to identify opportunities to develop these capabilities in the coming years.

Six more Investment Zones are to be announced in England – ensuring that there are engines for growth and opportunities for talented people across the country.

Each was invited to identify an Investment Zone that offered an imaginative partnership between local government and a university or research institute in a way that catalyses emerging innovation clusters.

As well as delivering jobs and driving economic growth, investment zones will be used to help provide new housing in areas of need.

In a speech earlier this week, the Levelling up and Housing Secretary set out our commitment to using the planning and tax levers provided by our new Investment Zones to help regeneration and build the right homes in the right places to support our great cities.

A new “supersquad” of expert planners, backed by £13 million of new funding, will help unblock major housing and infrastructure, looking at sites across our 8 Investment Zones in England, to help provide high quality homes which complement the high-quality jobs that are being created.

There will also be 2 Investment Zones in Scotland, with Glasgow City Region and North East of Scotland offering the most potential to host these. Discussions will now begin with both regions to develop detailed proposals.

The government is also working closely with the devolved administrations to establish how Investment Zones in Wales and Northern Ireland will be delivered. Today’s news follows the first Advanced Manufacturing Investment Zone in South Yorkshire, announced earlier this month, which has backing from Boeing and partners with an investment worth over £80 million.

Liverpool’s investment zone will complement the benefits of region’s Freeport, which became operational in January and will deliver thousands of new jobs and £850 million for local economies.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) WILL BE SELLING CARS BY 2025

It’s only a matter of time before artificial intelligence (AI) is selling cars as effectively as a human salesperson, and could happen as soon as 2025, says Phyron CEO Johan Sundstrand. The speed at which self-learning software is developing and being embraced by retailers means that a fully competent AI-powered sales bot is as close as 18 months away. This prediction comes at a time when Phyron, Swedish video tech pioneers, has made a massive leap with its own AI-powered software, by adding bespoke, fully automated voiceover to its studio quality on-brand AI videos. The voiceover functionality is initially available in over 22 languages with options for four male and four female voices in each language. Every characteristic of the voiceover can be adjusted, including the pitch, tone, speed, voice equalizer and the music gain.

Phyron CEO and co-founder Johan Sundstrand commented: “We know the automotive retail market is more competitive now than ever before. In this environment, anything that gives your business a competitive edge and increases efficiency should be welcomed. AI-powered videos have proven to sell cars 3 to 5 days faster, and the addition of AI-powered voiceover will only increase impact and efficiency. “It’s only a matter of time before the technology advances to a point where the likes of ChatGPT can get very close to how a salesperson sells cars offline. We think this could be as soon as 2025 based

on the current speed of AI development and adoption,” added Sundstrand. Dealers looking to sell more vehicles, faster can leverage the power of AI and take full control of the custom templates at a customer, campaign or product level. Every variable in the data feed can be utilized to make an engaging voiceover to accompany the video including the intro, outros, the “why us” and the crucial callto-action sections. Generative AI utilizing Phyron’s own Large Language Model (similar to GPT-4 software) has been spe-

cially trained and fine-tuned for the automotive retail sector to produce bespoke manuscripts on a vehicle’s key attributes.

The AI can produce the voiceover from existing car ads, marketplace, and technical data. It works with any input, from 5 to 5000 words and can write the manuscript from the OEM copy, the dealers’ website or predefined templates.

How Phyron’s AI video works

Phyron’s innovative video and AI technology is the world’s first software solution for automated video production and

distribution for the global automotive industry. The unique AI software and its algorithms enable Phyron to create videos for car advertisements which can be used on OEM brand or retailer websites, as well as classifieds, across social media channels and targeted email distribution. Not only do automated videos save retailers huge amounts of time and money on video production, especially as there is no need for a salesperson to video any cars on site or prepare a script of key features, they ensure premium quality films

of every single car in a firm’s inventory has an engaging video ad attached to it in minutes.

The innovative process works by Phyron using a data feed from a retailer or car brand, including at least three still images and key product details. The AI then identifies the key properties in the images, including various shot angles, interior elements and exterior highlights, and then strips out the backgrounds and replaces them with a neutral one. The unique software then adds special effects, shadows and overlays the desired product specifics and any customer offers on the relevant images, including price and retailer dealer branding.

Thanks to state-of-the-art cloud computing, Phyron can process an unlimited number of videos concurrently, taking about 10 minutes to render them all, posting them live on a single retailer or classified online auction site, or scale them across an entire network if needed. If a detail changes, such as price, or promotion, the data feed updates and the video is re-rendered automatically as part of the small video fee.

The team has been working with car retailers and partners since 2019 and now counts over 1,500 customers across Europe equating to 100,000 cars currently carrying a Phyron video in the ads. Since January 2021, its customers’ car videos were viewed more than 250 million times and the firm has also expanded into the North American market.

THE EMPRESS REVIEW

The Empress takes us on a journey through Britain’s colonial history and imperial rule through the lives of a cast of people who all arrive in Tilbury Docks from India on the same ship. Rani, a 16-year old ayah who was immediately fired as a nursemaid after the ship docked and left to fend for herself. Rani’s heartfelt story, which details her journey from a traumatic beginning to pursuing her studies, finding sanctuary in a shelter, and finding a lost love, illustrates what actually occurred to many ayas who were scorned by British families during that time. Queen Victoria sits above the stage enjoying stories of a country she has never visited with her new servant, while a young girl below is horribly mistreated by the master of a family she is trying to serve.

Abdul Karim, who after leaving the ship became Queen Victoria’s servant before being promoted to

teacher. The story of Abdul Karim, however, stands out because of his bond with the Queen and the terrible treatment he received following her passing. There are heartwarming instances. It is delightful to observe the Queen clearly touched by Karim’s descriptions of the Taj Mahal, a palace she has only ever seen through her late husband’s paintings.

Flags are flown in honour of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, and there is much to celebrate. Despite her passion for her new servant Abdul, who the Royal household refers to less affectionately as “The Indian,” herdominion is expanding quickly, but she isoblivious to the implications for the people living in the regions her country is snatching up.His claims that the British stole the valuable stones from the structure that formerly made it glitter disgust her. We experience delicious aromas throughout the theatre, dancers and vendors filling a busy marketplace, and brightly coloured cloths wrapped around the ailing queen when Abdul leads his kingdom to a frail, dying Queen. The monarch doesn’ t actually emerge onthe stage below until the Queen, who the oppressed refer to as “The Empress of famine and Black Death,” grows more weak and a young girl named Rani fights her way out of the gutter and into a position as Adabhai Naoroji’s secretary, who also arrived with them on the ship. Naoroji later became the UK’s first Indian MP. The shocking divide between the ruler and the ruled is evident.

Tanya Katyal has superbly portrayed an innocent 16 year old Rani and growing before our eyes into a strong woman. Alexandra Gilbreath wonderfully played the role of a witty and no nonsense Queen Victoria and Raj Bajaj as her humorous, loyal servant.

The play has brilliantly highlighted a story of an uncomfortable past but also a celebration of culture and strength.

Directed by Pooja Ghai, Artistic Director of Tamasha, Tanika Gupta’s The Empress will take you from the rugged gangways of Tilbury docks to the grandeur of Queen Victoria’s Palace, whilst unveiling the long and embedded culture of British Asian history.

A team of researchers have been awarded funding to investigate the impact of short spells of exposure to high temperatures during early pregnancy on the long-term health of the child.

A multidisciplinary team of scientists at the University of Nottingham in collaboration with the University of Leeds have received £2 million Wellcome Trust funding to work on a project to determine how transient exposure to heat stress during early pregnancy affects pregnancy establishment and the long-term health of the child.

Global temperatures are increasing rapidly and with that the frequency and severity of heat waves during the summer. Last summer temperatures peaked at around 40 degrees Celsius in the UK and, currently, peak temperatures of greater than 40 degrees are being recorded in Mediterranean countries.

Predictions are that these extremes in temperature will become a regular occurrence in future.

This new study aims to identify how short-term exposure to elevated temperatures (typically between 28 to 33 degrees) during the first two weeks of pregnancy affects embryo development, implantation and adult-offspring health. One of the aims of the study is to identify intervention points to alleviate the effects of extreme heat during early pregnancy.

Elevated temperatures (high 20s to low 30s) for just a few days during early pregnancy can increase the risk of pregnancy failure. Long-term consequences for children born follow-

NEW RESEARCH TO EXPLORE THE IMPACT OF EXPOSURE TO RISING TEMPERATURES DURING PREGNANCY

ing maternal heat stress during early pregnancy are not known. However, scientists recognise that the first 2-3 weeks of pregnancy are the most sensitive stage of human development.

Kevin Sinclair and Ramiro Alberio, Professors of Developmental Biology from the University of Nottingham’s School of Biosciences will examine changes

in DNA due to heat stress.

There is compelling evidence that maternal diet during the first few days of pregnancy can have long-lasting effects on the health of offspring (children) and indeed their offspring (grandchildren). This arises because, under normal circumstances, sweeping changes occur to DNA inherited from the father (sperm) and mother (egg) in order to allow fertilization and embryo implantation to take place. We will now investigate how these important and naturally occurring events are disrupted by short-term periods of maternal heat stress, rather than diet, during early pregnancy.

Professor Kevin Sinclair

These disruptions during early pregnancy can have a longterm effect on the health and wellbeing of offspring.

Studies for the most part will use the pig as a model species. We will establish health consequences in adult offspring by using cutting edge, non-invasive techniques to assess insulin resistance, blood pressure and kidney function.

TECHNIQUES TO AVOID WEIGHT REGAIN, APPROVED BY EXPERTS

Losing weight is challenging. But as anyone who has ever successfully lost weight knows, it’s avoiding weight re-gain that’s the real challenge.

This is true no matter what method you follow to lose weight. For example, studies show that people who follow very low calorie diets (between 800-1,200 calories per day) regain between 26% and 121% of their lost weight five years after treatment. People who follow behavioural weight management programmes (such as WW, formerly Weight Watchers) regain between 30-35% of their lost weight after one year.

taining a healthy weight will require lifelong management – so having rigid expectations and thinking you’ll always adhere perfectly to your lifestyle changes is unrealistic.

David

Professor of Physiology at the University of Nottingham’s Vet School

By studying the DNA of different animal species, some of whom are tolerant to heat stress, and comparing it to data that the team will generate in pigs, the team hope to identify common physiological pathways that confer heat tolerance during pregnancy.

By studying the DNA of heat adapted mammals in comparison to that of other mammals like humans, we can determine what genomic elements are most likely to contribute to pregnancy success at higher temperatures. This powerful approach will identify pathways and processes to target in order to improve outcomes for other species.

Even people who use weight loss medications, such as Wegovy, are shown to have regained about two-thirds of the weight they lost one year after stopping the drug. There are many reasons why we regain the weight we lose. First, maintaining weight loss is less rewarding than seeing the number on the scale decrease while you’re losing weight. This makes it hard to maintain motivation and continue looking after your weight

Second, it’s often difficult to maintain the lifestyle changes we made in order to lose weight – especially if these changes are unrealistic and hard to stick with in the long-term (such as very low-calorie diets or cutting out whole food groups).

Third, weight loss can trigger increased production of hunger hormones – and can even slow your metabolism. These changes can make it difficult to resit overeating and can contribute to weight regain over time.

But while weight regain may be a common experience, that doesn’t mean there aren’t many evidence-backed things you can still do to prevent it in the long run:

1. Be flexible

It’s important to understand that main-

Don’t feel guilty when you have a slipup. Instead, make plans to get back on track as soon as possible. For example, if you think you may have overeaten on the weekend account for this by adding a couple extra walks into your routine the next week.

Doing this can prevent an “all or nothing” approach to weight management – whereby you feel guilty when you don’t achieve your goals and so instead abandon your efforts.

2. Plan for disruptions

Recognise that there will be disruptions to your weight management efforts – such as holidays, weddings and birthday parties.

Plan ways to navigate these disruptions successfully. For example, losing a few extra pounds ahead of time may adjust

for extra weight that may be gained during these occasions.

Or, if you’re going to a barbecue, bring along a healthier option (such as vegetable skewers) so you have a lower calorie option to choose. Doing this will help you enjoy special occasions with less worry.

3. Be proud of your achievements

Our weight naturally fluctuates over time – and so being proud of yourself when you achieve your goals, regardless of the number on the scale, is important. Research also shows that people who focus more on how they can achieve their goals – rather than the outcome – are more likely to stick to behaviours important for maintaining weight loss. This might be because they’re less likely to be affected by setbacks (such as regaining some weight).

4. Make habits

Creating habits can help maintain weight loss. This is because habits are thought to be less affected by fluctuations in motivation.

ASIAN WORLD’S KITCHEN

RISK OF FORCED LABOUR IS WIDESPREAD IN US FOOD SUPPLY, STUDY FINDS

Animal-based proteins, processed fruits and vegetables, and discretionary foods such as sweeteners and coffee contribute are the most at risk of being produced using exploitative practices, a new study finds.

The new report published in Nature Food saw researchers from the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University and the University of Nottingham Rights Lab follow the supply chain for every land-based food commodity in the US, looking at each stage of production, the policies in place in various locations, and any previous reports of forced labour.

To calculate which areas of the food industry have the highest risk for this type of exploitation, excluding seafood, the researchers used data from the US Department of Labor and State Department as well as various reports from non-governmental organizations.

They also relied on investigative journalism sources, combing through 40,000 articles on forced labour in food commodities across the world for any documented incidents that might not have been included in other reports.

They found that risk is widespread in the U.S. food system.

A lot of the high-risk products were hand-picked products, such as tomatoes, berries, and citrus fruit, or those that require significant processing, such as boneless beef or apple juice concentrate.

The researchers explain that the goal of the report wasn’t to get consumers to stop purchasing a particular food—these actions

can actually hurt workers, the researchers said—but to prompt the systemic changes needed to create a food system that works for everyone.

Jessica Decker Sparks, senior author of the paper and assistant professor at the Friedman School, said: “We often think of our risk here in the U.S. as coming from imports, but there’s

plenty of risk that comes from our domestic food production as well. And that’s important because some of the more effective tools we use to try to eliminate or mitigate risk of forced labour in the U.S. are trade bans or trade sanctions. They’re focused on imports.”

Study authors Bethany Jackson, senior research fellow at

the University of Nottingham, and Edgar Rodríguez Huerta, research fellow at the University of Nottingham, along with Nicole Tichenor Blackstone, assistant professor at the Friedman School, also found that 62 percent of the risk of forced labour came from production or processing that occurs on U.S. soil.

MAYOR

SENDS SIGNAL OF SUPPORT FOR BROADCAST SERVICES AFTER TOURING SUTTON COLDFIELD TRANSMITTER

The Mayor of the West Midlands Combined Authority, Andy Street, has endorsed the importance of local TV and radio services after visiting the iconic Sutton Coldfield mast.

Standing at 270 metres, the transmitter is recognised as one of the most important in the UK, providing a range of TV and radio services for more than 1,800,000 households across the West Midlands.

During the visit, the mayor acknowledged the importance of the structure at a time when universal access to Freeview TV and local radio has come under threat.

Mr Street said: “I’m very clear on this, the broadcast services, which are free to air are very important and so necessary for those in society who don’t have much choice –so I’m part of the group that says

they’ve

got to be protected.”

Later this year, an international conference will decide whether to safeguard the radiofrequency spectrum used to deliver these services. A campaign, Broadcast 2040+, calls on the UK Government to ensure that the international decision does not negatively impact the services relied on by the people living in the West Midlands. Freeview TV is especially important for older and vulnerable people, many of whom don’t understand or can’t afford services like Sky, Virgin or Netflix.

A coalition of charities across the UK, including West Midlands based Churches 4 Positive Change, are working together as part of the Broadcast 2040+ campaign, which seeks to protect vital TV and radio services for

everyone – including the elderly and vulnerable people that rely on them the most – until 2040 and beyond.

Ruben King from NTCG and Churches 4 Positive Change, said:

“For so many marginalised people that we support – those who are new to the UK or living in poverty – terrestrial TV and radio not only provide entertainment, but is also an important lifeline to health information and important news and education.

“Through access to broadcast media, disadvantaged individuals and communities can find hope, inspiration, and a communal sense of belonging. It’s essential that everyone has the chance to access and benefit from these resources.”

BRADFORD CITY AFC ANNOUNCES LONG TERM PARTNERSHIP WITH MUSLIM LED CHARITY PENNY APPEAL

Bradford City AFC announces long term partnership with Muslim led charity Penny Appeal

Bradford City AFC is delighted to announce a long-term agreement which sees Penny Appeal become the club’s new official chosen charity partner.

A three-year deal will mean the Wakefield-based organisation, which specialises in international crisis relief, is recognised with main partner status at the University of Bradford Stadium.

Penny Appeal’s branding will receive exposure inside Valley Parade, as well as taking pride of place on the sleeves of the Bantams’ shirts, in both the Carabao Cup and EFL Trophy competitions.

The partnership will see City work closely and collaboratively with Penny Appeal on a number of initiatives, while unlocking opportunities for Penny Appeal ambassadors to provide entertainment on home match days.

Penny Appeal aids people in over 30 crisis-hit countries worldwide, changing the lives of those in desperate need through projects such as building wells, caring for orphans, delivering medical aid and providing meals.

Ridwana Wallace-Laher, Chief Executive Officer of Penny Appeal,

said: “as a lifelong Bradford City supporter, I am incredibly proud that we are partnering with this amazing club to bring about muchneeded opportunities for our young people in Bradford and beyond“.

“In working together, as organisations who share core values of equal opportunity, growth and prosperity for all, I have no doubt that the lives of many people both here at home as well as around the world will be transformed as a direct result of our partnership and the life changing work we will be doing together“.

Davide Longo, City’s chief commercial officer, said: “We are immensely proud to be welcoming an incredible organisation like Penny Appeal on board at the club as our official chosen charity partner.

“The work Penny Appeal does worldwide to help those who need it most is truly inspiring, and we are keen to get involved and help with the kind of projects Penny Appeal is already hosting.

“By being partners, not only are we able to unlock opportunities for people across the district, but also help those much further afield with joint initiatives around crisis prevention and relief, religious festivals and more.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ridwana and her fantastic team for their support. We are looking forward to working with Penny Appeal on a number of exciting and important projects, and of course seeing their branding on our shirt sleeves for matches in the Carabao Cup and EFL Trophy.”

LOUGHBOROUGH RESEARCH AT WIMBLEDON TO DRIVE EXPOSURE OF WHEELCHAIR TENNIS

Colleagues from The Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport (PHC), in collaboration with RGK Wheelchairs and staff of The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), investigated how wheelchair tennis under different chair configurations and surface hardness impacts the grass surface on which the iconic tournament is played. The findings will inform AELTC ground staff teams with valuable insights to assist the scheduling of the wheelchair tennis matches depending on surface hardness.

It is hoped that Loughborough’s findings will encourage organisers to schedule even more Wheelchair Tennis matches on SW19’s Show Courts in the future.

Lead researcher Professor Vicky Tolfrey explained: “This was a fantastic opportunity bringing together a mixed methods design of technical performance data with qualitative methods of gathering the perceptions of the players.

“I thank Prof Nick Webborn CBE and Geoff Newton OBE (Chair and Former Vice-Chair of the British Paralympic Association) with posing this interesting research question to us. While we have an international academic track record within the sport of wheelchair tennis, this project brought a whole new dimension raising the interest of AELTC colleagues over the three days while we gathered data at Wimbledon.

“In addition, Sandi Procter (LTA President) expressed a keen interest in the project, which will enable us to disseminate our work alongside both the AELTC and LTA to the wider tennis community over the coming months.”

The vigorous testing period involved elite-level athletes – including fivetime wheelchair tennis Wimbledon champion Gordon Reid – undergoing a series of drills on court.

Geoff Newton OBE, former ViceChair of the British Paralympic Association, added: “The learnings from this research will assist the AELTC, LTA, and the International Tennis Federation (ITF), together with other grass court venues, in the further development of wheelchair tennis on grass.

“There’s strong potential to transfer these learnings to other events in the run up to The Championships. This will hopefully give host venues the confidence to include wheelchair tennis, thus providing additional opportunities for wheelchair players to hone their skills on grass.”

Geoff added: “With benefits both here in the UK and overseas, we’re sure that this research will help players improve their performance on this surface. We’re grateful to all those involved in making this project pos-

sible.”

Gordon Reid said: “Playing on grass is physically more challenging, the movement gets heavier and there is less momentum, it’s hard work. So, for that, I’m grateful and excited about this research.

“The different set ups and the testing has been great, I think it will have a positive impact on my performance and the wear and tear on my body”. The findings from the study are due to be presented to The All England Lawn Tennis Club in due course.

PUBLIC INVITED TO HAVE THEIR SAY ON PROPOSALS TO ENHANCE PERRY PARK AND ALEXANDER STADIUM

The latest ideas have been shaped to support the aspirations of the Perry Barr 2040 Masterplan – to deliver a true legacy asset in the form of an improved park and a multi-purpose stadium with a yearround relevance for the local community and other users.

A key aspect of the plans is for the park to include spaces that are welcoming and easily accessible for social activity.

The proposals include a café which would act as a focal point for visitors, as well as additional lighting, street furniture and signage to improve safety and wayfinding. In addition, spaces will be retained to accommodate events that the park continues to attract.

Space for physical activity is also a cornerstone of the proposals, to improve health and wellbeing.

Notable features include a play facility suitable for different age groups and a sensory play garden for younger visitors to encourage interaction with local nature.

This would be complemented by running and walking trails to formalise existing routes, new cycle routes and a bridge across the stream to facilitate access and circular walks.

Biodiversity will be supported through landscape enhancements including the planting of semi-mature trees and additional wetland along with improved access to key assets including Perry Reservoir and the Tame Valley Canal.

The proposals also include the retention of the ‘L’ shaped access road from the former Spectator Transport Mall, to

CRICKET GREAT AWARDED HONORARY DEGREE FROM LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY

provide vehicular access into Perry Park on a temporary basis during major events only. When events are not being held, the route would be dedicated for use by pedestrians, cyclists and park users.

An extension of the Gymnastics and Martial Arts Centre (GMAC), a key asset within the wider footprint of the Alexander Stadium, is also proposed – to provide better leisure facilities for the community as well as ensuring readiness for future major events and to support existing and future stadium tenants.

The extension would enable an existing public gym to be relocated from the Stadium’s East Stand. Other potential enhancements to diversify the leisure offer on site include a beach volleyball facility (subject to funding), using sand reclaimed from the Games-time city centre venue at Smithfield, as part of a collaboration with Volleyball England.

Further additions could include covered seating and accessible toilets for the existing warm-up track as well as lighting for the throws field to improve usability.

For safety and security of site users, a permanent fence line is also proposed around the warm-up track, throws field, proposed beach volleyball facility, and the main stadium bowl. This fence line would include a gate to allow public access to the throws field when not in use for throws. This gate would be locked when the throws field is in use to ensure the safety of park users. Advance notice regarding the closure of this area would be provided.

for Environment at Birmingham City Council, said: “The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games were the catalyst for the transformation of the Alexander Stadium into a world-class athletics facility, which is by far and away the best in the UK.

“But we’ve always been clear that to secure a meaningful Games legacy, the improvements to the stadium need to be complemented by enhancements to the site’s other facilities, the surrounding Perry Park area and Perry Barr more widely.

“The shaping of the Perry Barr 2040 Masterplan included rich feedback and input from the local community, which has informed these initial proposals. Our aim has been to strike the right balance between what people enjoy about Perry Park and the Alexander Stadium and what will make both even more valuable and viable community assets in the future.

“This package of proposals is designed to elevate the park from a popular local facility in need of investment to a focal point for community and sporting activity that will also champion the area’s natural environment.

“We want to hear what people think of these proposals so we can move from these initial ideas through to final plans that can be delivered for the benefit of people of Perry Barr and others who use the site.”

To view the proposals, visit the council’s Be Heard consultation hub. The feedback deadline is 14 August 2023.

Rainford-Brent, 39, made history in the sport by becoming the first Black woman to represent England in international cricket in 2001. She is now an established broadcaster and a newly appointed Cricket Non-Executive Director for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and has been referred to as a “trailblazer” by the organisation’s Chair. The award – in recognition of her outstanding contribution to cricket, TV and radio broadcasting, and her work championing diversity in sport – was presented at one of the University’s summer degree ceremonies on Tuesday 18 July 2023.

“The emotions are pretty high today,” Ebony said. “Loughborough University has meant a lot to me throughout my playing career. I spent many years here chasing the dream of playing for my country and it really set me up for life – it’s special.

“It’s nice to have a moment and milestone to reflect on the journey so far. I’m feeling really honoured and to have my mum here too means so much.”

Ebony-Jewel Rainford-Brent MBE, During an illustrious playing career, Ebony was awarded many honours including winning the ICC Women’s World Cup in Australia and the ICC World T20 in 2009. She was also part of the England side to win the Ashes in the same year.

Ebony started her cricket career at Surrey CCC in the under-11s, and progressed through the ranks to the women’s senior side. She captained the team to promotion to the topflight of domestic women’s cricket in 2011.

A passionate advocate for diversity in cricket, Ebony launched the AfricanCaribbean Engagement Programme – ACE – in 2020, and within three years it had reached 10,000 children, and over 140 academy scholars train twice a week.

Professor Nick Jennings, ViceChancellor and President of Loughborough University added: “We are immensely proud to award Ebony with an honorary degree from the University.

“She is a true champion of change in women’s cricket and her drive and commitment to reach equity in the sport is truly inspiring.

“The incredible work that Ebony spearheads to promote diversity is changing lives for the better. This is an incredible initiative that successfully engages hard to reach communities and that can only benefit both sport and wider society. We are all thrilled to recognise her today.”

Prior to the ceremony, Ebony also reflected on the development of the women’s game, including how much the sport has grown in recent years:

“I’m fortunate to see that we’re in a period of exponential growth.

“We’re changing perceptions but it’s important that we keep going. Schools; parents; everyone; must know that men and women have an equal place in sport. There’s still so much more to achieve and we need to keep putting the foot on the gas and pushing for change.”

Whilst still playing, Ebony became one of the first coaching ambassadors for Chance to Shine, a national cricket charity that works in state schools and communities across the country. She continues to support the charity.

In 2015, she returned to Surrey as its first Director of Women’s Cricket –a role she held until 2022 – and also chaired the side’s Culture & Values Board. Through these roles she played a key part in developing the women’s game and in working on strategies to increase participation at all levels.

Ebony was awarded an MBE for her services to cricket and charity in 2022, collecting her award from the then Prince Charles.
