MANILA — Forty-five years after the declaration of martial law by the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has assured Filipinos of its commitment to uphold democracy. “We must remember that the martial law of today is not the same as the martial law of yesterday,� AFP spokesperson Maj. Gen. THE Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said it has not received any reports of Filipino casualties in the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Mexico on Tuesday, September 19. More than 200 people were killed and a still undetermined number of individuals were injured in the powerful tremor that toppled buildings in the country, including the heavily damaged Philippine Embassy in Mexico.

The embassy occupies the first two floors of an eight-story office building in the CuauhtĂŠmoc neighborhood near the city center. Philippine Ambassador to Mexico Eduardo de Vega said all the embassy staff were able get out of the building unhurt when debris started to fall. They were also able to check the condition of the 60-member Filipino community in Mexico City. “We are all a bit shaken but otherwise all of us from the embassy are all right,â€? MANILA - Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano is set to discuss the Philippine government’s campaign against illegal drugs before the United Nations (UN) on Saturday, September 23. Cayetano will represent Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte at the upcoming 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly in New York. He is expected to deliver the chief executive’s message for the international community to unite against terrorism, nuclear weapons and other common threats. During the event, Philippine Permanent Representative to the UN Teodoro Locsin, Jr. said Cayetano will also discuss the need to address the threats posed by the Islamic State, as well as the continuing missile test launches and detonations by North Korea. Likewise, the Philippines’ top diplomat will share the government’s efforts in protecting the rights and promoting the welfare of Filipino migrant workers.
