WASHINGTON will not put pressure on the Philippines to try to push back against China in connection with the South China Sea dispute, the U.S. Department of State said. Patrick Murphy, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific

Affairs, stressed that State Secretary Rex Tillerson wants cooperation and collaboration in addressing the North Korea and South China Sea issues. President Rodrigo Duterte has refused to use the ruling of an international arbitral tribunal on the South China Sea in pressuring China. In a telephonic press conference last week, Murphy said that the U.S. took

note of the arbitration ruling issued last year and consistently notes that it is a binding ruling between the Philippines and China. “But there is a much bigger story here, and that is bringing about a solution to the disputes that applies to all of the claimants and then the rest of the international community that has the rights and the needs to access the South

Religious conservatives “disappointed”

TO coincide with National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 4, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on “religious liberty” that would permit churches and other religious institutions to become more involved in the political process. The executive order would allow clergy members and religious institutions to endorse political candidates from the get-go, a promise Trump made to his supporters during the presidential campaign. Specifically, the executive order protects religious groups from a restriction imposed by the IRS that prohibits taxexempt organizations, like churches and other religious institutions, from political speech and involvement.

PH military, police assure Palawan is safe

TWO U.S. senators filed a bill on Thursday, May 4 aimed at restricting the export of certain arms into the Philippines and reaffirming support for human rights policies, amid reports of the rising death toll associated with the Duterte administration’s campaign against illegal drugs. The Philippines Human Rights Accountability and Counternarcotics Act of 2017 filed by Senators Ben Cardin (D-Md.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) calls for withholding the exportation of “certain defense articles” to the Philippine National Police (PNP), working with the Philippines to tackle the drug epidemic from a “public health approach,” and reporting on

THE province of Palawan remains safe for both local and foreign nationals, the Armed forces of the Philippines ( AFP) assured the public amid a travel warning issued by the United States Embassy in Manila. On Wednesday, May 10, the AFP’s Western Command (Wescom) said it is closely coordinating with the Philippine National Police (PNP), Coast Guard, and the local government to “ensure maximum security.” “Western Command shares the same concern. That is why, even several months ago, even without reference to any travel advisory, Western Command has beefed up our security posture for tourists season,” Wescom said in a statement. Earlier on Tuesday, May 9, the U.S. Embassy warned its citizens of terror threats in Palawan. “Terrorist groups may be planning to conduct kidnapping operations targeting foreign nationals in the areas of Palawan Province, Philippines, to include Puerto Princesa City, and the areas surrounding Puerto Princesa Subterranean

Janet Lim-Napoles acquitted in illegal detention case, eyed as state witness by DANA

SIOSON AJPress

THE Philippine Court of Appeals this week acquitted alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles from her serious illegal detention case. In a 35-page decision by its Twelfth Division, the CA reversed the earlier ruling of the Makati Regional Trial Court (RTC) and said that prosecutors failed to prove that Napoles detained her cousin and pork barrel scam whistleblower Benhur Luy against

his will. Earlier in 2014, Napoles was sentenced to reclusion perpetua—or an imprisonment term of 21 to 40 years—when the Makati Regional RTC found Napoles guilty of detaining Luy from December 2012 to March 2013. The CA, however, ruled that Napoles’s guilt was not proven beyond “reasonable doubt.” “We hold that the evidence against [Napoles] is not sufficient to establish her par- Janet Lim Napoles (center with shades on head) steps out of the Sandiganbayan building pn
