US envoy: We don’t have a perfect human rights situation by PATRICIA LOURDES Philstar.com

MANILA — U.S. Ambassador Sung Kim admitted that Washington does not have a “perfect situation of human rights despite expressing concern for the Philippines’ anti-narcotics campaign. Kim, however, stressed that human rights is an important concern for the U.S. in the global aspect. “This is not specific to the Philippines and by no means we have a perfect situation when it comes to human rights in the United States,
Kim said in an interview with ANC’s “Headstart Tuesday, July 18. The U.S. envoy clarified that they have concerns about some aspects of the so-called war on drugs. More than 7,000 drug-related killings have been carried out from July 1, 2016, the start of President Rodrigo Duterte’s term, to January 21. The Philippine government, however, contradicted this number last May showing a lower figure of nearly 4,600 drug-related killings. Kim noted that the U.S. understands that there is a serious situation involving illegal drugs and that
the government is doing right in focusing on the problem. “I told President Duterte I applaud his focus and commitment, very strong commitment, to dealing with this menace that’s affecting such a broad range of population in the Philippines, Kim said. On the other hand, the human rights commission of the U.S. Congress is scheduled to hold an inquiry into the Philippines’ anti-drugs campaign this week. Reports of extrajudicial killings of drug suspects have raised alarms
